The facility, which will replace the aging Plum Island Animal Disease Center, is designed to protect theU.S. from transboundary, emerging, and zoonotic diseases that threaten the food supply, agricultural economy, and public health. With stringent safety protocols, NBAF features biosafety level-2, -3 and -4 containment laboratories. It’s BSL-4 containment spaces have the highest level of safety protocols and are capable of housing large livestock — a first for the United States. NBAF’s capabilities allow USDA to expand its research and diagnostic mission with foot-and-mouth disease to also include diseases like Japanese encephalitis and Nipah virus.

Dr. Spencer Wayne welcomes Dr. Adam Schelkopf, Health Director for Pipestone Management, for a discussion on the overall health status of PIPESTONE-managed farms. Historically, this time of year brings an increase in illness, especially PRRS infections. Dr. Schelkopf reports less than 10% of PIPESTONE-managed farms breaking with PRRS over the last two years, which is far better than in the past. He attributes the improvement to compounding interventions over time. Feed mitigation is the most recent strategy implemented at PIPESTONE, having been in place for 2-3 years it correlates well to the reduction in PRRS over the last two years. Over the last 15 years air filtration has been implemented in nearly 70% of farms. And lastly, location selection. The good health reported from an isolated sow farm pays dividends.
In regard to the wean-to-finish side, Dr. Schelkopf stresses the importance of alternatives to antibiotics – management, environment, sanitation, and biosecurity. Though the availability of generic drugs may be greater, the introduction of new antibiotics is not expected. Dr. Schelkopf recommends this recipe for success: “Start with a high-health pig and protect it through the wean-to-market phase with biosecurity.”

It generally originates at the sow farm level and is a vertical disease meaning it’s transferred from sow to piglet.

Pipestone Transport falls under the Management business unit and serves to help our Pipestone Management shareholders receive their wean pigs, transport our managed barn’s sows and much more.
Developed out of necessity for biosecurity and route flexibility, Pipestone Transport currently has 7 hubs across the Midwest. Each hub consists of a truck wash and some locations have drying buildings to store trailers and protect them from the weather. Dr. Bryan Myers has gained quite the experience and wisdom from being a veterinarian for the last 34 years. In these years, he has seen the serious effects of various diseases that have infected the swine industry. He is now seeing APP, an old disease that has resurfaced after almost 20 years in some of the most hog-dense areas of the Midwest. SwineTime Podcast host, Dr. Spencer Wayne, discusses what APP is, how serious the disease is, how it can affect your farm, what your treatment options look like, and what steps you can take to prevent APP from infecting your farm.
APP, also known as Actinobacillus Pleuropneumonia, is a bacteria that can cause severe rapid onset of death loss and pneumonia type symptoms in pigs. This disease is not new to the industry and may be recognized by those who have been in the swine industry for some time now. It is becoming more relevant now, due to recent resurgence mainly found in Iowa. This disease can have serious health effects on your entire operation.
APP is often spread from nose-to-nose contact between each pig. It is also known to spread from the people and equipment found on farms. With this recent discovery, it only reinforces the importance of proper biosecurity and following all health and safety protocols.
While treatment for APP is not necessarily difficult, it is not a quick or cheap treatment. If you have detected this disease within your barn, you will need to act quickly and aggressively if you want to have any chance of stopping it. You will need to treat each pig with antibiotics. Fortunately, APP does respond to commonly used antibiotics.
Since APP most commonly effects pigs closer to market weight and older in age, the economic impact to your operation is more prevalent. This is because pigs are considered to be more valuable, and in turn, result in a higher loss if they become infected. Treatment is also more expensive due to having to treat each individual pig with antibiotics, therefore costing your operation more time and money.
If a farmer suspects APP on their farm, they should immediately call a veterinarian to receive a preliminary diagnosis. The veterinarian will then send tissues to conduct a laboratory diagnosis. During this time, you will need to work quickly to treat each individual pig.

African Swine Fever (ASF)’s threat to USA farmers has never been more real. With the recent detection of ASF in the Dominican Republic, ASF has been introduced in the Western Hemisphere for the first time in over 40 years.

PRRS virus is very clever. It mutates as it passes from pig to pig, resulting in the generation of new variants. Occasionally, these new variants establish themselves and become pathogenic, such as PRRS 144 Lineage 1C. In the months July through September, Pipestone Applied Research, under the direction of Dr. Scott Dee, will be running a set of projects to better understand how this virus works and what pig farmers can do to reduce its effect. Dr. Karyn Havas also sheds light on some of the most common ways PRRS virus is spreading according to her research from the Pipestone Management data.

In this Episode, host Dr. Spencer Wayne talks with Dr. Cameron Schmitt, Veterinarian with PIPESTONE, in the 20th episode of SwineTime about Swine Influenza and efforts to prove an eradication protocol.
Pig farmers and veterinarians in the U.S. are all too familiar with the warning signs of influenza in their herds. Sows off feed, minor abortion levels, mortality in GDU, and lower pig wean weights are seen in the sow farm, while pigs in the finisher will show a mild cough and off feed. Dr. Schmitt notes that since finishers have static populations, a break will run its course in 70 days; however, it is much more difficult to eliminate in a sow farm since new gilts and baby piglets are constantly being introduced.
With this challenge in mind, Dr. Schmitt is working with ten PIPESTONE managed sow farms to evaluate an influenza eradiation protocol. “We continue to strive for better health. Influenza is one component we think we can make a big impact on. Our goal is to eliminate flu from a farm and make a flu negative sow unit,” stated Dr. Schmitt. Dr. Schmitt discusses the three large components of their eradication strategy which include an extended quarantine period for gilts coming in, utilization of autogenous vaccines for the specific strain on that farm, and moving restrictions.
