Discussion - Which Java version should you start a new project?
If you haven't heard, Akka has changed is open source license (from Apache to Commercial). And if you have been using Akka, that's significant! We have seen this happen a couple of times to a lesser extent in cloud products (MongoDB and Elastic comes to mind), but (we think) this is the first time we see a license change in something that's so fundamental as an enterprise integration framework like Akka
Join us as we explore the ramifications of this move, both for Lightbend, and for the industry. Does this mean that Open Source and its business models (like paid extended features or tooling, or support contracts) is over? Would Akka be forked? Would it sink or swim? Will Lightbend survive. We don't know all (or any of the answers) but we sure spend time trying to understand what are the possible answers to these questions.

Ok, so the fun part about being in the Java Ecosystem is that it's always trying new things, and the interesting new "thing" that seems to be happening is the ability to offload your "JIT" (Just In Time) compilation into the Cloud!
We discuss how this changes (or maybe not?) things, but is interesting to see how we are enhancing our regular "code, build, deploy" to have more complex workflows behind-the-scenes that allow you to become "faster", and more performant (and ultimately save some Cloud $)
We also comb over the news, with the big NVIDIA / ARM deal falling through, costing around 1.25 billion dollars (insert Dr. Evil theme here) since it was done as a deposit for a successful transaction. Our local curdmudgeon offered his services as an money-holder and arbitrer for future NVidia / ARM contracts! (for a much much smaller sum than 1.25 billion).

We are just going through those times with Bitcoins and now the newly created Non-Fungible-Tokens (or NFT for short). If you have been surrounded by "bored apes", or "lucky goats" and wanted to understand what NFTs are (or aren't), then take a listen! So aside from being all giddy about Java 17 LTS release, we take now a deep dive on the changes that Oracle announced on their release schedule and Licensing. WANL (We are not Lawyers) but that didn't stop us from discussing what could it mean, and where would it go!
Faster LTS, we are onboard. It's fun to be able to jump from LTS to LTS, but what does that mean for older releases and maintainability (as Oracle longstanding policy is to sunset the "oldest" of LTS when a new one comes out). We see the interesting dynamics on this with the new "Oracle No Fee Terms and Conditions", and what does that mean for Big Red's plan for our favorite programming language.
In all, an interesting episode to pay attention to (and to know what's important). Like all Licenses, do talk to a real lawyer before adopting a new license (we really are just code monkeys that managed to wrestle a microphone). Or go with another Java open source binary provider on the standard licenses (Like Adoptium!)

Hey y'all, well, this episode we dive into tons of fun stuff. There are new toys w/JDK 16, Spring Native and Graal. Essentially, it's a fun time to play with Native and new JDK 16 features (Records are mainstream!).
And in a one-two punch, Spring Native release of 0.9, and Graal news of adopting truffle makes the ideal of adopting native images for your Java builds not far-fetched. It might have still some rough edges, but oh my, for some projects, it went from being painful, to a non-issue. So yeah. Millisecond startup times coming up!
Micronaut is also out with 2.4.0, which we think is actually healthy! (we worried for a second or two). And Microprofile also has a release, with its LRA (and SAGA! pattern). We really wished SAGA was an acronym
In addition some interesting consolidation happening with Crowdstrike buying Humio, and Okta acquiring Auth0. Interesting moves in security and authentication to say the least.
We see how deep SolarWinds go with blaming an intern for their security woes. If that's your strategy, you already lost at the security game (shame!)
And lastly, oh my, there is an Outlook vulnerability making its rounds. Important enough to hear (and patch!). You don't want weird inetpub/wwwroot files hanging in your outlook server.

Oh Goody, this is the first episode after coming back from both OracleCodeOne and ApacheCon... and things are happening! First off we start that Oracle JDBC Drivers are FINALLY in Maven Central (hey, missed the mark for a couple of years). We then dive into Jakarta EE 9 updates, including Oracle's position on the "Big Bang" approach to the namespace changes (Hint, you WILL be affected by this, even when you think you aren't).
We then look at Java SE 13 (Woohoo!), and that we can finally have Text Blocks (yeah, go crazy with that Json String), and look at Java SE 14 Early builds (including Helpful NullPointerExceptions). Spring is in the news as their Conference SpringOne went underway, and we talk about OracleCodeOne and ApacheCon (good, bad, bust?)
Lastly we cover Unionizing Tech Workers and what could it mean to our industry, and we end up by setting the record straight on an article that seems to imply IBM is divesting in Java (This is a far cry from the truth).

Oh gosh, there's so much news going around, beginning with Microsoft acquiring JClarity (and all that brain trust that comes w/it!). Martinj Verburg, Kirk Pepperdine, and Ben Evans are household names when it comes to Java (including their efforts on spinning and maintaining AdoptOpenJDK.net). It shows that Microsoft is serious, and they want to invest in a big way in the Java Ecosystem
And of course! This is one of the few episodes where our local Curmudgeon (@michaelminella) won't be talking too much on the following topic, since VMWare came back and bought Pivotal (again!). We are pretty sure that VMWare just wanted Michael back, but they had to buy the whole Pivotal to do so.
And then we check up on JavaFX, which its alive and well, thanks to many contributors, but one company is really putting tons of effort and making it a first-class citizen of the Java Ecosystem. GluonHQ! As an old Swing developer, I relish that while web is good, there's still something around desktop (and native-like mobile) applications.
And we ended up with a big discussion on the Tampere University Study, called "Does Code Quality Affect Pull Request Acceptance? An empirical study". We all have different opinions on it as we come from way different backgrounds. In all, an interesting discussion that reveals what we tend to forget, that Coding is a social activity!

Ah, "cloud wars" are getting interesting (we claim dibs on the movie title!). With Oracle losing their bid w/the Pentagon, and Microsoft also reaching out and partnering with Oracle, there is tons of interest in what's going on.
But that's not all! The twitters was set aflame by the 10x Developer twitter that has been going around (for the record, we think is mostly nonsense), and we dive into a hilarious take on what 10x developers are supposed to be.
We also dive into Gil Tene's OpenJDK Mystery meat, and the threat of "just taking the latest Docker image". It's a sobering thought that sometimes even when you see the version of OpenJDK, it might not be the right thing due to the OS packaging, which in turn becomes a Docker reference image. In all a troubling precedent specially when Common Vulnerabilies and Exposures (CVE) are concerned.
Lastly, there are predictions that Python is going to overtake Java as the most used language in the TIOBE index. Of course this crowd will not just take that proclamation laying down. So we went into a heated discussion why and how it is (in our humble opinion) a little rushed to say that python is going to overtake Java in mere four years.

Oh snap! so The Apache Roadshow just happened, and we armed our own Bob with all our podcasting equipment, unload him at the roadshow, gave him a couple of beers, and turned the mics on! Recorded live from the bar we go into the interesting news (Java 13 is EA now), to the unfathomable (Jakara EE can't update, change, or enhance the "javax" space), to a great discussion with Gris Cuevas on D&I.
In all, the collective Jakarta EE community jaws dropped once we heard that Oracle would not permit the evolution of the Javax package space. What does it mean for the community? What are the steps to evolve? Should we band-aid it, or just rip it off and move to the new space? Oh boy, and if you don't think that this will affect you since you don't use Java EE, let us mention...JAX-B, or JAX-RS.... or Java EE Security, or JSP.. or websockets... all of these are rolled into Java EE.

Oh my, we take a break for a month, and things happen! We start with the news of the day (JDK 12 is General Availability, so go and download it today!). F5 buys NginX which brings more consolidation in the web appliance/software space, and there is a new Continuous Delivery Foundation! (What does it means for all of us devopsy folks)
Then we dive into some interesting developments in ElasticSearch! You might have been using it, and even contributed to it, but may have not realized that some parts are actually commercial in nature. Amazon is releasing a purely "Free as in Free beer" ElasticSearch Open Distro where there's no confusion on what's commercial, since there's nothing commercial in it. It makes it harder for Elastic to make a buck, but maybe there might be a different monetization model for them? All in all, an exciting episode on how the open source community and for-profit companies are trying to find when the line is being crossed.

Episode 43. JCP: Hold my (white) Wine. The JCP welcomes the competition of Eclipse Foundation on spec creation + A recap on Reactive. Ah, DevNexus 2019! One of the better conferences to attend in the U.S. We ended up running our yearly offheap show in there with special guests Heather VanCura, and Ben Hale! We went through the deep questions on the role of JCP (now that Eclipse Foundation Spec Process is in town), and Heather replied that the JCP is agile, knows what they've been doing for a while, and that is still THE Source for Java Spec creation! Indeed, these are intertesting times!
We also dove deeply on the current state of Reactive (and what Pivotal is doing to make it easier for everyone to embrace it). We got to hear about R2DBC, when to go Reactive, and what is a good criteria for adoption (hint: Don't go and rewrite your large app in reactive just because).
To top it off, we ended up with a "Who wants to be a millionaire quiz" where we pitted our guests against our (somewhat tricky) quiz questions. All for the privilege of winning an OffHeap Mug!. In all, a great episode, with tons of information and interesting guests!

Episode 42. Move over JCP! There's a new Specs Maintaining Organization in town with Eclipse Foundation Spec Process. Oh goody, this episode is special in many ways! First, I got to travel to Chicago, and meet in-person with our usual suspects. We went to the bar where everything started, and we recorded our 42th episode in-person! (very Douglas Adams). But aside from the reminiscing, we actually got the Executive Director of The Eclipse Foundation to go on the record on what's happening with Eclipse Foundation and Jakarta EE! We went into what does it mean to have the Eclipse Foundation Spec Process (and how is that affect the JCP), and dove into maintainers, and the future of Jakarta EE (Glassfish is released!).

Oh my! It's an interesting month in the Java space. IBM just acquired RedHat, and we are just wondering what does that mean for the Java Ecosystem. We don our pundit hats and try to see the different perspective on what that does to their redundant Projects (Openliberty and Wildfly). Also, RedHat is the official maintainer of the OpenJDK 8 branch... What would happen now? (or in the near future) under IBM's stewardship?
We also jumped into Amazon introducing another OpenJDK flavor, and wonder what does it mean for the (now growing) OpenJDK alternatives. Is it fragmenting? Or growing? What is Amazon's purpose on its OpenJDK flavor of Corretto?

With Ed Burns (author of the Secrets of the RockStar Programmers), and the usual OffHeap crew, we listen, dissect, and comment on these interviews.
Our First episode is none other than James Gosling. He is considered the "Father of Java", and he put the Java language on the map (which was named "Oak" at the beginning). Ed interviewed him for his book a little while ago, and incredibly, a lot of the advice and ideas he mentioned still holds very well today. So Deprecation is getting serious! Nobody should be using object.finalize(), and if you are, shame on you! This deprecation will have some bite! Also, we just heard the rumours. If you use an Internet Service Provider in the US, that means they can sell all the information about you (yikes!). Lastly, there has been a new MicroServices survey out there and we want to take a look and see what's shaking (and who is shaking) the ever-evolving microservices world.

We made it! After taking a short flight, and re-assembling the crew in Atlanta, we finally made it to DevNexus, the conference run by Atlanta Java User Group. DevNexus is not just a great conference in itself, but it's a great place to run and talk to top tier speakers without breaking the bank. We did our own talking by running into Ted Neward (@tedneward) and Chris Richardson (@crichardson)! We actually manage to sucker-punch them into playing a little game of Trivia with us! At the end, we explore if the Cloud the new Mainframe, and came to some interesting conclusions. An episode like no other, you definitively need to listen to this one!

Ah, well, it has been promised, and it WILL be delivered. Java 9 is feature complete! And we start taking a look at what is (http/2 finally?), and more importantly, what was cut-off from the release. We also did dive into what does it means when developers can't migrate to the US. Is it good for our industry? Or is it meh, as people just telecommute? And as long as we're talking policy we touched on Net Neutrality since it might be an issue this year. Do we have to say goodbye to those millions and millions of undeterred bit streams?

Episode 20. It's the End of the Year! Let's recap! and Oh noes, seems some FUD is coming our way from the Register?! So the end of 2016 is upon us! "Legacy is coming", is the call of those that are Guarding Java EE. The Java EE Guardians started a Change.org petition (and I Signed it) to get Oracle to re-engage in the Java EE space. Are there alternatives? What is plan B? Can the community take over? Is it even feasible without fragmenting? Is this all happening because of the Cloud? Some of these questions were asked in the public forum of the Java Community Process. So many questions, and very little answers from Oracle. Google and Oracle are on round 4 of their lawsuit, and while these giants battle it in Court, it seems that Oracle is stopping investing in Java Development! What does this mean for Java? Is it the end of rapid release lifecycles? Is EE losing too much steam? And just like in the movies, when everything seems dire, a new hero (sort-of) forms. The Java EE Guardians splash the scene! for Truth...Justice...and The Ameri...oh wait, no, that's Superman. The Guardians are all about convincing Oracle that leaving EE is a bad idea. Would they succeed? Let's hear what the opinion in the room is about these group of spirited developed banded with a purpose.

We discussed, and left you a nicely typed doc in the shownotes to forward to your congressional representative. Also, someone (Typesafe) is going to the Secretary-of-state and asking for a Name-Change form, just that they are not sure what to fill in just yet.
