Being seen is one thing. Being positioned is another.

Visibility might get you in the room but strategy, relationships, and how you show up once you're there determine what happens next.

In this episode, we're talking about what it really takes to move from presence to positioning so your voice carries weight, your work is recognized, and your leadership is undeniable.

In this powerful episode of Being Brown at Work Live, I am honored to welcome back the visionary Deepa Purushothaman. Deepa is a former Senior Partner at Deloitte, an Executive Fellow at Harvard Business School, and the author of the internationally acclaimed book, The First, The Few, The Only.

We dive deep into the "status quo of ambition" and why high-achieving Black and Brown women often find themselves outworking everyone else—only to realize the system is taking a physical and emotional toll. Deepa shares her personal journey of how a lack of boundaries led to a severe health crisis, and why she now advocates for a leadership model that prioritizes "health and wealth" over mere endurance.

Key Takeaways from Our Conversation: The "Outworking" Superpower: Deepa and I discuss the common narrative for daughters of immigrants and women of color: "Work harder, do more, and don't complain." We explore how to transition from simply outworking the room to strategically thriving in it.

The Cost of "Vacation Phobia": Deepa highlights the phenomenon where senior leaders spend the first few days of vacation simply "unplugging" from the stress. We discuss how to break this cycle by integrating boundaries into your daily practice, not just your time off.

Model the Behavior: Shifts in culture don't always come from the top down; they happen when individuals and teams start modeling healthy boundaries. We discuss how being clear about your "non-negotiables" actually strengthens your power and engenders respect from colleagues.

Compromise vs. Settling: Especially in a difficult economy, it's easy to fall into the trap of saying "yes" to everything out of fear. Deepa challenges us to stay clear on our limits, reminding us that being choiceful is exactly what highly successful leaders do to stay in the game long-term.

Deepa's Advice for Leaders: Getting clear on your emotional clarity starts with internal reflection. Identify the 6 to 12 things that define how you want to show up in the world. Once you have that filter, you can stop reacting to every request and start leading with intention.

Connect with Deepa: Pick up her book, The First, The Few, The Only, follow her on LinkedIn, and check out her think tank, the re.write, for more insights on advancing a new story of work.

In this episode of Being Brown at Work Live, I finally sat down with the incredible Natalie Parker, founder of Natalie Parker Enterprises and host of the podcast "So Your Boss Sucks, Now What?"

Natalie and I stripped away the corporate "safe-speak" to talk about the real work of 2026: Self-Preservation. We explored why Black and Brown women often default to service and performative excellence at the expense of our own health and purpose. Natalie's own 2022 near-death experience served as a powerful reminder that we have "one life to live", and we shouldn't spend it all putting points on someone else's scoreboard.

The Heart of Our Conversation: * The Performative Trap: We discussed how we've been conditioned since childhood to work for the "gold star." But in the corporate world, that 80-hour week often leads to burnout, not the promotion you were promised. * The "Oven Drawer" Reality: Just because you've always used your career a certain way doesn't mean it's its true purpose. Your job is a transactional agreement—it is a tool for your life, not the totality of it. * Managing Up in a Self-Awareness Vacuum: With only 8–12% of people possessing true self-awareness, your manager might be "sucking the life out of you" without even realizing it. We discussed why their lack of training is not your burden to bear.

In this high-octane season premiere of Being Brown at Work Live, I deliver a "no-sugarcoating" analysis of the current corporate landscape. Drawing on the newly released Lean In 2025 Women in the Workplace Report, I break down the sobering reality of the "crooked pathway" Black and Brown women are navigating today.

This episode moves beyond simple motivation to provide a strategic survival and advancement guide for 2026. I explore the critical difference between mentorship and transformative sponsorship, sharing personal stories of how sponsors opened doors to board seats and executive education.

Key Statistics Discussed: * The Burden of Race: 1 in 3 Black women worry their race will hold them back, despite being among the most highly educated demographics in the U.S.. * The Burnout Crisis: 8 out of 10 Black women in leadership report high levels of burnout due to increased scrutiny and the constant pressure to prove their value. * The Corporate Priority Gap: Only 46% of companies view the advancement of women of color as a high priority, a double-digit drop from the general priority for women.

The 5 Imperatives for Success in 2026: 1. Environmental Awareness: "Call a thing a thing." Acknowledge the reality of your surroundings without taking on the burden of fixing others' discomfort. 2. Foundational Self-Awareness: Use high Emotional Intelligence (EQ) to understand your unique persona and set non-negotiable boundaries. 3. Strategic Community: Don't be an island. Seek out accountability partners and build a trust-based inner circle. 4. Narrative Control: If you don't define your excellence and your story, the organization will do it for you—often to your detriment. 5. Psychological Safety: Prioritize your peace. Protecting the "person who produces the excellence" is your most important job.

I want to leave you with a powerful reminder: the rules may be different and the field may be uneven, but with clarity and a different approach, you can successfully shape a career that remains firmly in your own hands.

In this episode, I continue my conversation with tech executive Obi Ihenacho (Corporate Engineering at Robinhood, Ex-Meta), who shares his actionable, personal playbook for building a powerful network that defines career success.

Obi shares real-life strategies, including the incredible story of how a genuine connection at a coffee shop led to an opportunity at Twitter that created a full-circle career win.

We dive into essential steps for growth:

  • The Power of Proximity: Strategically positioning yourself at conferences and events to meet people who align with your goals.
  • Small Wins, Big Confidence: How starting small—like having a simple "elevator pitch" ready—boosts confidence and propels you toward bigger wins.
  • The Two-Way Street: The critical importance of making relationships mutually beneficial and remembering how you make people feel, not just what they can do for you.
  • Networking in a Volatile Market: Why a strong network is essential for securing referrals and providing a safety net in an industry facing uncertainty.

This episode is packed with practical tips to help you transform your approach to networking, turning connections into career leverage and long-term professional success.

In this episode, I welcome Obi Ihenacho, an accomplished IT professional with a decade of engineering experience at companies like Robinhood, Meta, and Twitter. We kick off a crucial discussion on why relationships, not just technical skills, define career success and leadership influence.

Obi immediately provides a powerful framework for growth, outlining three vital relationships every professional must cultivate:

  • The Relationship with Yourself: Centered on self-confidence, self-awareness, and believing you deserve your seat at the table (essential for combating imposter syndrome).
  • The Relationship with Your Work: Understanding that your work product speaks to your personal brand and value.
  • The Relationship with Others: The need for intentional, strategic connections.

We dive into why networking must be strategic (not just serendipitous) and how finding common ground breaks the ice. Most importantly, we cover the critical role a cultivated network plays in today's volatile job market, serving as an essential safety net and leverage point for securing interviews and your next opportunity.

Stay tuned for Part 2, where Obi will share his best practices and actionable "how-to" steps for building and nurturing a powerful network that propels your career forward.

In this highly actionable episode, I continue my conversation with the revolutionary Ngozi Cadmus (TEDx Speaker and CEO of Happiworkers) as she shifts the focus from healing to hustle and strategy. Ngozi argues that AI is the great leveler and a powerful tool for achieving "ease of living" and financial control.

We dive deep into:

  • The AI Imperative: Why mastering AI is crucial for future-proofing your career and business. The person who masters AI will replace the person who doesn't.
  • Time Optimization: Practical ways to use simple AI tools (like Copilot and generative AI) to save hours on administrative tasks, effectively ending your workday earlier.
  • Digital Storytelling for Wealth: Ngozi shares how Black and Brown entrepreneurs can use AI to create viral-quality video ads and films for less than a traditional budget, turning lived experience into income and visibility.
  • New Digital Ventures: Ngozi gives a sneak peek into her work creating autonomous AI agents, non-biased image generation platforms for the global majority (True Tones), and courses that democratize app creation and advanced AI skills.

This episode is a powerful call to action, offering a clear blueprint for taking control of your destiny and leveraging technology to create wealth, visibility, and legacy.

In this episode, I sit down with the revolutionary Ngozi Cadmus, TEDx Speaker, Psychotherapist, and CEO of the UK’s leading anti-racist mental health platform. Ngozi brings her unique global majority (BIPOC) lens to a raw conversation about the "why" behind the struggles of Black and Brown women in the workplace.

We dive deep into: The Unseen Trauma: Ngozi shares her personal journey, revealing how issues like colorism, functional depression, and the mammy/strong Black woman trope create a deep, internal barrier to professional success. The Threat Dynamic: We explore the reality of how Black women often transition from being the "pet" to the "threat" simply by standing in their confidence and truth. The Diversity of Disparity: Ngozi powerfully validates that the barriers are not a monolith—whether you face racism, bias, or microaggressions from within your community or externally, all experiences are valid and must be addressed. The Collective Solution: We emphasize that moving forward requires us all to appreciate our different roles—the fighters, the solution creators, and the advocates—to drive equity. This first part lays the crucial foundation of awareness and validation, setting the stage for Part 2, where Ngozi will reveal the actionable tools, including why AI is the great leveler for achieving cash flow and future-proofing your career. In this incredibly raw second part of my conversation with Chenae Erkerd, we move beyond the "why" of workplace trauma and into the personal journey of healing and resilience. Chenae shares how she was able to navigate a toxic work environment by holding on to her faith, the love of her family, and her own self-worth.

This is a powerful, vulnerable conversation about:

  • Finding your core identity: Chenae discusses how she found strength by drawing on her roots and the wisdom of her ancestors, including her grandmother and a Black Panther uncle.
  • The importance of a spiritual foundation: She shares how her faith was an unwavering anchor during her most challenging times, offering her clarity and purpose.
  • Owning your narrative: We discuss the importance of not allowing a job to define you or dictate your self-worth.
  • The power of "The Gift": Chenae closes the episode with a breathtaking and deeply personal spoken word poem, "Mary," that encapsulates her journey and the resilience of women throughout history.

This episode is a must-listen for anyone who has felt broken by their professional life and is searching for a path to healing, empowerment, and a deeper sense of purpose.

In this raw and courageous episode of Being Brown at Work Live, I sit down with the phenomenal Chenae Erkerd, also known as the Recruiter Cousin. We kick off a crucial two-part conversation focused on "Get Me Together!," a candid look at workplace trauma and its profound impact on our lives.

Chenae bravely shares her personal journey through a toxic work environment, revealing the immense stress, burnout, and emotional toll that led her to a mental health leave of absence. We discuss the pervasive expectation for Black and Brown women to be "strong," even in the face of adversity, and the heartbreaking reality that this often leads to their pain being overlooked or misinterpreted as poor performance.

This is a powerful, vulnerable conversation about:

  • The reality of workplace trauma: How it can bleed into our personal lives and affect our mental health.
  • The expectation of strength: Why the "strong Black woman" trope can be a heavy burden.
  • The importance of feeling: We give you permission to feel your emotions, whether it's anger, frustration, or sadness, because your feelings are valid.
  • The danger of losing your voice: How toxic environments can lead us to silence ourselves, and why reclaiming our voice is a powerful act of defiance.
  • The "rite of passage" myth: We challenge the notion that enduring workplace trauma is a necessary part of the journey for Black women.

This episode is a must-listen for anyone who has ever felt alone or misunderstood in a toxic workplace. It’s an honest, unfiltered conversation that validates your feelings and sets the stage for actionable strategies in Part 2.

We dive deep into:

  • Redefining Wealth: It's more than just a savings account or 401k; it's about freedom and control.
  • The Evolving Job Market: Why AI, layoffs, and a less secure job landscape make building wealth now more critical than ever.
  • The Power of Ownership: Understanding how ownership of assets is at the core of true wealth building and tackling disparities.

This week on the podcast, Keri-Lynne, a former Chief People Officer, reveals the three areas where most professionals fall short: networking, interviewing, and negotiating. She shares her own eye-opening experience of leaving over a million dollars on the table by not negotiating early in her career, a common pitfall that contributes to the gender and racial pay gap.

(Did you know only 15-20% of people negotiate, and 87% of those who do get a "yes" to at least some of their requests?)

This episode is packed with actionable strategies:

  • Networking: Learn how to strategically build your network, even with "cold" outreach (and why it works!), and how to become a thought leader on platforms like LinkedIn to attract opportunities. Keri-Lynne stresses that 80% of jobs are found through networking!
  • Interviewing: Discover how to truly "tell me about yourself" to captivate interviewers in the first two minutes, move beyond simply regurgitating your resume, and leverage "impact sheets" to showcase your achievements using the STAR method.
  • Negotiation: Uncover the secrets to salary negotiation beyond just the base pay. Learn how to respond when asked for salary expectations without locking yourself in, and explore the 20+ other benefits you can negotiate, from professional development to severance packages and sign-on bonuses (Keri-Lynne helped one client secure a $315,000 sign-on bonus!).

In this episode, I'm joined by executive coach Candace P. Jones to delve into the pervasive issue of the "workhorse mentality" that many Black and Brown women experience in corporate America. We explore the historical context of this phenomenon, tracing its roots to the devaluation of Black labor, and discuss how it continues to manifest in today's workplaces.

Candace and I unpack the damaging consequences of this mentality, not only for individuals but also for their families and communities. We challenge the notion that overwork is the sole path to success and emphasize the importance of strategic thinking, relationship building, and self-advocacy.

Key takeaways:

  • The historical context of the "workhorse mentality" and its impact on Black and Brown women.
  • The importance of recognizing and challenging the belief that overwork is necessary for advancement.
  • The need to prioritize well-being and set boundaries.
  • The power of self-advocacy and reclaiming space in the workplace.
  • The importance of community and connection in navigating these challenges.

This episode lays the foundation for a crucial conversation on how to break free from the workhorse mentality and create a more sustainable and fulfilling career. Stay tuned for part 2!

In this powerful second part of my conversation with communications expert Jerry Jerome, we delve deeper into the complexities of "Performing Professionalism" as Black and Brown professionals. We unpack the challenges of navigating corporate spaces that often demand we "subtract" from ourselves to "add" to the environment.

Jerry challenges us to question whose imagination we're living in and encourages us to draw inspiration from those who truly have our best interests at heart. We discuss the importance of assessing our individual situations, understanding our value, and recognizing that money is a tool we can leverage to create our own opportunities.

Key takeaways:

  • The importance of self-reflection and understanding your value beyond your job title.
  • Challenging the false narrative of the American meritocracy.
  • Recognizing that corporate America is a game and learning how to play it strategically.
  • The power of humility and the importance of sharing knowledge and opportunities with others.
  • Understanding that money is a tool, not a definition of value.

Jerry's wisdom transcends his years, reminding us that we are all capable of defining our own success and creating a life that aligns with our authentic selves.

Don't miss this transformative conversation!

Black and Brown women continue to make significant progress in terms of representation, particularly in high positions.

However, while this means that we're increasing our incomes and climbing the ladder, it also means we're more susceptible to one thing: Burnout.

We break glass ceilings, overcome barriers, and continue to achieve high levels of success...but a lack of appreciation and recognition for our hard work is causing Black and Brown women to burn out at unprecedented rates.

In this episode, I share tips on how Black and Brown women can avoid burning out, so we can continue our career climb and achieve the success we deserve. Listen now!

Have you ever been told, "you are aggressive", or "next time think about not being so vocal", or maybe "why do you keep making such gross error" when your mistakes are no different from others?

More times than I can count, I and other Black and Brown women around me have experienced microaggressions in the form of feedback at work. Sometimes they're about the quality of our work or our body language or behavior.

One thing that's sure about microaggressions that come through as feedback in the workplace is that they are not always overt. In fact, they sometimes sound like a compliment. "So how do I know the difference and what should I do in such a situation?"

This is a burning experience that we as Black/Brown women need to know how to navigate in order to create and maintain a space of equal respect for ourselves at work so listen in as I share how to successfully manage such work place environments.

There's no denying that the COVID-19 pandemic has been brutal on EVERYONE.

However, studies show that the pandemic's impacts are still being felt in the workplace - particularly by Black women, who were the hardest hit demographically.

Let's face it - feeling stuck in place in your career is incredibly frustrating.

That's why I teach a 3-step method to achieving your career goals. I call it the AMA Method, which stands for Accelerate, Maximize, Achieve.

When it comes to making strides in your career progression, the first step involves digging deep to identify your gaps. But once you've identified them...then what?

In this episode of Being Brown At Work, I explore the concept of MAXIMIZE - the second step in the AMA Method. At this stage, you begin to apply methodologies to address the gaps you've identified within yourself.

To find out how this stage will boost you towards your career goals, listen in!

Have you ever felt like a "Black Workhorse?"

This term refers to when a racist leader piles extra work and responsibilities on Black and Brown employees. Why?

Because in their eyes, you're not human, you're Black. And therefore, you're "built" for carrying a heavier workload.

This dehumanizing attitude towards Black and Brown women in the workplace can lead to burnout at higher rates than their white counterparts.

In this episode, I share how I successfully stopped being the workhorse.

Let's talk about playing the victim.

It's a term frequently tossed around in discussions about systemic racism and injustice, stirring a deep response in us as women of color. Why? Because we're acutely aware that racism and systemic injustice are not abstract concepts—they're real, and their impact on us as Black and Brown women is undeniable.

But here's the thing: we don't have to resign ourselves to this fate. Action can be taken, and it can bring immediate benefits to our lives while also creating a better path for future generations. Especially in the workplace.

Attorney Chiquita Hall-Jackson, a licensed attorney, employment law expert, and relentless advocate for those silenced in the backroom, boardroom, and everywhere in between, joins me for part two of this discussion.

Having faced bias herself, she's on a mission to create diverse, fair, and equitable workplaces. Known as the Discrimination Disrupter™, Chiquita channels her legal expertise, DEI consulting, and community advocacy to dismantle biases, harassment, and retaliation.

We encounter them frequently as professional Black and Brown women, sometimes even daily.

They're microaggressions, covert forms of discrimination that can take an emotional toll on employees who are members of historically underrepresented or marginalized groups.

Microaggressions shatter our confidence, causing us to question our abilities and self-worth. In our efforts to prove ourselves, we may also face burnout.

How do we overcome microaggressions and avoid burnout? How can we cultivate the resiliency to bounce back stronger when we encounter discrimination in the workplace?

To find out, listen in for part 2 of my conversation with Ashley Wynn-Grimes, Founder of Cannabis Nursing Solutions, LLC and author of "Stigmatized" and the children's book "Asa's Medicine".

What psychological manipulation tactic is used to leave victims feeling confused, shaken, and unsure of themselves?

The answer is gaslighting. And it's, unfortunately, something that many Black and Brown women face in the workplace.

How can we avoid it, and protect ourselves? How do we deal?

In this week's episode of Being Brown At Work, I explore what to do when we're faced with mental manipulation at work with phenomenal career coach, Zenica Chatman.

Has anyone ever made you question what you know to be true? Did it make you question your own memory...or perhaps even your sanity?

That's gaslighting, and many Black women will experience it at work - especially when it comes to issues dealing with racism, sexism, or microaggressions.

My guest this week on Being Brown At Work is Zenica Chatman, a career coach who helps women cope with workplace bullying, including gaslighting.

Early in her career, Zenica had her own experience with gaslighting and workplace bullying. As a result, she was left "emotionally broken."

Despite what the people around her were telling her, she knew that the harassment she was experiencing wasn't just in her head. It was REAL. So she did the work to redefine her self-worth. Today, she helps other women do the same.

Thinking back to when I started my corporate journey over 30 years ago, and as a woman of color, it was incredibly rare for me to see anyone in a position I wanted. There was no one for me to ask questions or be mentored by.

But, I learned QUICKLY that my career trajectory wasn't just up to my bosses at work. It was also primarily in MY HANDS!

If I wanted to grow and get to the places I had been dreaming of, I needed to relearn many things and do them differently than my White cohorts.

I've spent the last 30+ years building these strategies and using them as stepping stones to become a senior-level executive for numerous Fortune 500 companies.

So listen in to this episode where I share some tips on how not to burnout or go crazy trying to prove your value, over and over, in the workplace.

Within the Brown and Black female professional community, self rejecting seems to be a more reoccurring challenge that we deal with on a regular basis.

What this means is when we tell ourselves we are not good enough, or when we focus more than the average person does on past mistakes anda failures, and we let that define us or any kind of misstep we have.

For Black and Brown women, our underrepresentation in corporate boardrooms makes it harder for us to advance in our careers, because so often we’re not the ones in the rooms where decisions are getting made. However, this is exactly why allyship is so important. Allies— in this case I mean white men, white women, and other people in positions of authority— can use their privilege to reach back and help close that massive gap between the decision-makers and the rest of the world. As we fight for racial and gender equity, allies have an important part to play. Listen in as I share my thoughts on what true allyship looks like and how to show up as one.

Imposter syndrome is characterized as doubting one's own abilities and feeling like you're unworthy of your accomplishments.

It can stop us from applying for leadership positions, negotiating better pay or benefits, or advocating for ourselves at work at all. It can be debilitating both professionally and emotionally.

As Black and Brown women, race/gender intersectionality puts us in a more vulnerable position at work...which means that imposter syndrome tends to be more common among women of color.

So how can we overcome this phenomenon and achieve our full potential?

Joining me in this episode of Being Brown At Work is Chloe Ford, manager of global diversity programs and partnerships at Bain & Company.

Chloe, who is also one of my clients, shares how imposter syndrome impacted her personally and professionally... and how she managed to conquer it and achieve her goals.

You know you deserved that promotion...so why weren't you chosen for the job?

It may be hard to believe, but getting promoted is about FAR MORE than the quality of your work output.

I recommend that people begin by reflecting on previous positions they were passed up for. Why were you overlooked in the past?

When you begin analyzing the gaps in your career and presence, you'll start to get a clearer picture of why you weren't chosen for the position. Then, you can take that data and work on leveling up for the next opportunity.

To help you figure out why they passed you up and how to prevent it from happening again, tune into this episode now!

You may not have realized it, but you're already a master negotiator. Have you ever sorted out house chores with your family? Yes, that was a negotiation.

Have you and your buddies ever decided on somewhere to go for the next meet-up? Yup, that was a negotiation as well.

Everyone bargains; the only question is how, with whom, and for what.

But for some reason, we become uneasy as soon as money is involved. All of a sudden, everything feels a lot scarier. It does not have to be this way...all it takes is a mindset shift.

In this week's episode, I'm joined by special guest, career coach Claudia Miller.

Have you ever been urged to "tone it down" or asked why you "have so much attitude"...even when you weren't angry at all?

Black and Brown women encounter these types of situations on a daily basis. They're called microaggressions, which are regular, subtle, purposeful — and frequently inadvertent — exchanges or acts that express stereotypical beliefs about oppressed groups.

I have experienced microaggressions many times in my career. I was once told I was "too passionate" to get a vice-president role. I was being stereotyped. And it was incredibly frustrating.

So when microaggressions rear their ugly heads, how do we address them?

Listen to this episode now to find out.

Have you ever tried negotiating a higher salary?

Just the thought of attempting to ask for more money can send most people wanting to run and hide. However, it's all about perspective.

Quite simply, negotiating a higher salary is about asking for fair pay for your work and the experience you bring to the table. Obviously, it should be an appropriate request because asking for something unreasonable will get you nowhere.

But first things first: How do you know what's 'fair'? And once you know...how do you ask for it?

When I was growing up, the main gap or challenge that existed was education inequality.

Today, the divide still exists but is greater due to the rise of technology.

The digital divide is a major gap for children of color who predominantly attend public schools. It is critical that we put intentional focus and effort into bridging the gap, to prepare Black and Brown youth to fill the pipeline in adulthood.

In this episode of the podcast, I am honored to have Monica Woodson, CEO of the Girl Scouts of Southeastern Michigan as my guest.

We will discuss the gaps that exist in the workplace, be it nonprofit or for profit companies, and the work that is needed to fill the pipeline.

As CEO of the Girl Scouts of Southeastern Michigan, Monica works in the nonprofit space where the same disparaging percentages exist for Black and Brown CEOs.

Monica has an extensive background in nonprofit programming and leadership, and significant experience working with organizations serving young people including Girl Scouts.

She maintains her commitment to serving the community as a volunteer for the National Conference of Artists –Michigan Chapter, and serving on the board of Southwest Solutions Counseling, and Advisory Board of the Citizen’s Research Council of Michigan, and the Changing Children’s Worlds Foundation of Illinois.

As a Black professional, you are probably guilty of it. I know I am.

It's called code-switching, and The Harvard Business Review defines it as "adjusting one’s style of speech, appearance, behavior, and expression in ways that will optimize the comfort of others in exchange for fair treatment, quality service, and employment opportunities."

In this episode of the Being Brown at Work Podcast, Angela Thompkins, Vice President and Chief Diversity Officer at Consumers Energy joins me to talk about code-switching and how we can show up unapologetically ourselves in the workplace.

As Vice President and Chief Diversity Officer, Angela is responsible for setting and monitoring the company’s diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) strategy, and partnering with organizational leaders to improve results related to DEI.

But how can Black women in corporate America cultivate and strengthen our resilience? How does it factor in to our corporate journey?

It's a situation many Black & Brown professional women face on a regular basis. An alarming side effect of being the "only" is that bosses and managers are less likely to socialize with them outside of work.

Join me and my guest Monique Wells as we discuss the importance of perception vs. self-perception, how her Christian faith aided in her journey to self-discovery, and how being the "only " in many situations affected her.

Monique Wells is the director of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion for DTE Energy and is responsible for accelerating DTE’s progress in building a workplace where everyone feels valued and able to contribute their best energy toward serving our customers, communities and each other.

Learn what is needed from a broader perspective to get the next level.

When I started working, all I wanted to do was to keep my head down and do the best work that I could. I would always say, I didn't come to work to make friends. And in a way, this mentality kept me invisible in the workplace.

I did far more professional growth by signing up for initiatives that scared me and then fumbling through them than I ever did by staying in my bubble aspiring to be perfect enough to someday get promoted.

This is exactly the work that Dr. Elizabeth Carter, Director of Finance Highmark, Inc. is doing. She's helping women who feel unseen in the workplace make their voices visible.

The reason Imposter Syndrome is so good at tearing us down is because it's an example of negative self-talk. It’s a little voice in our heads that cuts us down and tries to keep us small especially for Black and Brown women.

We have to eliminate it from our lives both professionally and personally because it’s divorcing us from our own sense of success and worth.

Dr. Bridget Leonard joins me to discuss imposter syndrome and how Black and Brown women can show up authentically.

Is code-switching necessary for the advancement of Black professionals?

The Harvard Business Review defines code-switching as adjusting one’s style of speech, appearance, behavior, and expression in ways that will optimize the comfort of others in exchange for fair treatment, quality service, and employment opportunities.

Listen in as I tackle this concept and how it affects how Black and Brown women show up in the workplace.

In this episode, I'm talking about what every single woman of color, and definitely every single black woman can relate to - our emotions getting hijacked.

And when that happens, we get a label.

For some of us, we become that angry black woman. For others, we become females that are too emotional.

But listen in to learn how you can prevent those negative labels.

Within the Brown and Black female professional community, self rejecting seems to be a more reoccurring challenge that we deal with on a regular basis.

What this means is when we tell ourselves we are not good enough, or when we focus more than the average person does on past mistakes and failures, and we let that define us or any kind of misstep we have.

As you're entering into this new year, do not allow yourself to pause. We've probably been in that state of pause for most of 2020, not by anything that we could control, but this is not what we want to take into 2021 even though naturally that would be the direction.

So go ahead and put some career goals in place for yourself for this year. Allow resiliency to step in and take control, showing that you do have what it takes to pick up from where we left off in 2020 and move forward in 2021.
