The Super Nintendo and Super Famicom have some of the greatest games ever made. But what sort of output did the system have in its twilight years? Today on XVGM Radio, Mike and Ed look at the late life cycle of the Super Nintendo/Super Famicom from 1996 and beyond, official releases only (No homebrew/indie stuff here!) to showcase some quality music from the system’s end of the road era. From 1996 to 2000, we’re spotlighting the hits, misses and risks the console took to continue improving upon its sound. In this episode you can hear all about Tamogotchi poop patterns, Zelda clones, CDs as weapons and of course…going to the west blowhole forest. Don’t miss this future classic episode of XVGM Radio!

Dragon Quest has had 11 mainline games, tons of spinoffs and ports galore. It’s a franchise known for ushering in the foundation of the Japanese Role Playing Game, or the JRPG. Originating on the Famicom in the mid 1980s, the game saw not one but FOUR games release on Nintendo’s first console. In this episode, we’ve decided to focus on the first three, known as the Erdrick Trilogy. With good friends and patrons of the show on board, Ryan and Cam, we were in good hands as Mike and Justin know very little. Now we’re blessed by two pros joining us to share their knowledge and music choices in this classic trilogy of games. Covering not just the NES originals but other ports as well, the XVGM Radio guys get down with the charming classical wonder of Koichi Sugiyama’s Dragon Quest (or Warrior if your nasty!) soundtracks. JRPG fans do NOT wanna miss this episode of XVGM Radio! We swear, it’ll be a GOOd time!

Many video game music composers try their best to fit into different musical genres but few do it as well as composers like Shinji Hosoe. On today’s episode of XVGM Radio, Mike and Ed discuss several of Hosoe’s game soundtracks, highlighting a wide variety of musical tracks. From techno and jungle to power metal and back to chiptunes, you can truly appreciate his chameleon-like nature to fit his music with a different style. It’ll make you say “I WONNDAAAAAAA” why you maybe haven’t explored his catalog before! Hear Mike and Ed give each other the internal shaft on this exciting episode of XVGM Radio!

It’s time for the holidays…and what did people receive as a gift during this time of year back in 1992? The Super Scope 6 of course! Nintendo’s successor to the NES Zapper was a bazooka-shaped monolith of potential. Though the final game library was small, the Super Scope 6 was full of untold gaming possibilities. From arcade ports like Operation Thunderbolt and Terminator 2: The Arcade Game, to Nintendo originals like Battle Clash, Metal Combat and Yoshi’s Safari, Super Scope brought a wave of innovation combined with top notch durability. Today’s episode focuses on the music from the library of Super Scope games. The XVGM Radio guys get a friendly but frazzled visit from co-podcaster RayjKayj of The VGMPorium, as well as discuss Justin’s fond memories playing Tinstar. Plus…Arnold Schwarzenegger himself calls in?! Maybe….or Maybe not. You’ll never know if you don’t click that play episode on our finale to 2025!

Mike’s been raving about Phantom Breaker Battle Grounds for almost a decade. The heart-pumping soundtrack, exciting chibi anime beat-em up styled gameplay and intuitive leveling up system is a prime example of a game that should’ve gained more appreciation over the years. When the most recent version of the game, Phantom Breaker Battle Grounds Ultimate came out this year, we knew it was time to FINALLY showcase the music for this game in a proper episode. SO, we decided to bring on a special guest which many will recognize as a familiar voice. In addition, some BIG changes are coming to XVGM Radio, and our guest is here to help ring in the news along with another special guest! This is an episode you absolutely CANNOT miss!

Today on XVGM Radio, we’re taking a look (and listen) to the audio history of Human Entertainment. Formed via a merger between Try Co. Ltd. and Communicate Inc in 1987, Human Entertainment was initially called Sonata, mostly handling ports from larger developers such as Konami and Bandai. After two years of this, 1989 saw the name change to Human Entertainment, where the company began creating their own IPs. Learn about how they created a development school which is where many of their development staff came from, their bankruptcy in 1999, and where many of their more notable staff members ended up continuing on the tradition of making weird, wacky games. Justin and Mike as the question: is a Human Sports Festival played with Humans as the balls? With a surprising mix of both wavetable tunes and redbook audio, there’s a bunch of variety in musical genres to choose from with Human Entertainment and it’s ONLY on XVGM Radio!

From discussions on eating crackers in hell,a shout out to Fresh Prince “Break out Lucille” reference, and of course…lots of “ball” jokes, this episode will have you re-racking after you finish the first time!

What’s faster than the speed of light? Mega Man Battle & Chase’s North American release date, that’s what! Released in 1997 in Japan and 1998 in Europe, this game completely missed it’s planned North American release despite ads and previews running for it in magazines. Initially forgotten as “just another kart racer copycat,” true fans of the genre and Mega Man fanboys, were given something truly unique in sound and style! Rev up those engines while you hear the XVGM Radio boys chat about their time playing the game. Buckle up for exciting discussion about the game as well as reviewing interviews with Keiji Inafune and some of the illustration artists taken from the Mega Man Official Complete Works book! Honk the horn when…the guys get a late call from Mega Man 8 era Dr. Light?! But most of all, stay locked in to drive your way through 12 incredible tracks from this exciting soundtrack! Matt Creamer, aka Radd Daddy, aka Norrin Radd, RETURNS to XVGM Radio to talk about his amazing soundtrack for Retroware’s Prison City game. We’ve chat with Matt previously about many of his soundtracks, even had him on one of our live shows before! A true friend to the podcast, Matt isn’t afraid to get into the nitty gritty details about how he carefully crafts his soundtracks. A self proclaimed “puzzle solver” when it comes to music creation, Matt Creamer delves into the new way he composes classic NES style soundtracks, and the XVGM boys grill him on his influences this time around (Groove and industrial metal?! The Batman and Goonies NES OSTs?!) and so much more! Join Matt, Justin and Mike for a long but utterly satisfying chat about Prison City on the latest episode of XVGM Radio!
Thanks as always to Matt Creamer for joining us on XVGM Radio! Check out his links here:

Marred in 90s era video game controversy, Konami’s Lethal Enforcers series, along with Mortal Kombat, Night Trap, and several other games, had ironic targets on their backs for their innovative, realistic (at the time) graphics involving firing a fake plastic gun at the screen, killing human targets. Years later, the series is best known for pushing buttons in the North American political atmosphere, which is a shame because it SHOULD be known for their amazing soundtracks! Today on XVGM Radio, Justin and Mike go a few rounds with some Lethal Enforcers 1 and 2 tunes, comparing the versions and picking which ones they like the best after their heavy analyzing. Well worth the price of admission, you’ll be firing in quarters like crazy into your phone to reload more amazing tunes full of orchestra synth hits, SNES Midi guitar, along with tons of comparison to other Konami OSTs. This episode has its target set on you, time to hit play!

Product placement and advertising in video games is a wild, wacky thing. Today on XVGM Radio, Mike and Justin are joined by fellow VGM podcast CRT Soundsystem, where Reese and Tom bring some unique tracks to the mix! The hosts chat about Redline, Fast food chicken preferences, and gamer munchies. The Americans on the podcasts (Mike, Justin and Reese) learn about the aisle of American junk food in Ireland’s grocery stores courtesy of Tom. There’s a Pop Tarts flavor discussion as well as a full on M&Ms breakdown of the characters based on the websites. Is the brown M&M really just Bayonetta? Who’s got the best taste in Pop Tarts on these shows? Is the Frosted Flakes mascot Irish in Ireland? Find out more on this super silly episode of XVGM Radio!
Huge thanks to CRT Soundsystem (Tom and Reese) for joining us! Check out their show on all podcatchers, and give ‘em a rating on Apple!

Free Picks…the very definition of randomness. Every 20 episodes, Mike and Justin think back to stuff they’re playing, or perhaps pick a track suggested by our Discord members (Thanks ElectricBoogaloo for this month’s pick!) What follows is an episode full of tongue twisters, caller requests from questionable callers and Justin goes all in on Destiny discussion. One COULD call this a “Squeakuel” but it’s best to call it Free Picks 6: The Search For 5!

Returning to the topic of Natsume’s musical history, Mike and Justin revisit one last time for a sort of epilogue on the history of Natsume via Tengo Project. Formed from an offshoot of Natsume Co. Ltd in the mid to late 2000s, Tengo Project is a small team of Natsume’s original staff who have been revisiting the company’s past to remake or create sequels to some of their most famous games. From Ninjas to shrine maidens and even a sort of wild, wild west, Tengo Project’s games have captured a snapshot of the past while recreating it for a modern era. Today, the XVGM Radio guys listen to some incredible music from Hiroyuki Iwatsuki as well as Iku Mizutani, in an era where both Natsume composers revisit their legendary past.

We’ve covered the Mario RPG games and their music WAY back on Episode 29 but today, we’re revisiting one of the best Paper Mario games out there: Paper Mario and the Thousand Year Door. Recently, it received a remaster on the Nintendo Switch and while the original soundtrack is an option in this new version, a brand new redone soundtrack has some major differences from the original. To discuss the game and the music comparisons, we’ve brought in a Thousand Year Door expert: Justin’s wife Ariel Schneider! Hear each song and get the breakdown, as well as some fun discussions on the wacky cast of characters in this game! All on the 115th episode of XVGM Radio!
Big thanks to Ariel Schneider for joining us for this episode!

There’s two things that don’t get the recognition they deserve when it comes to video games: Game Boy Advance soundtracks and licensed games. Today on XVGM Radio, Mike and Justin build up a musical tale to combat this inaccurate statement with a GBA soundtrack from a licensed game that rocks! Robots, based on the CGI family friendly flick, has a soundtrack sure to get your gears spinning. As an added bonus, the XVGM Radio guys interview the composer, Ian Stocker. Find out fun facts about the creation of the soundtrack, hear discussions about Garfield, hot dog nicknames and so much more on this stellar episode of XVGM Radio!

High score rankings have been a thing since the 70s in video games. But the music layered behind them didn’t really pick up until the 80s. Justin and Mike examine these tunes to explore the eastern vs western comparisons. Eastern composers tend to create much shorter high score music than western composers and the guys find a few tracks here and there that do show the differences in tone and style. Filled with influences from prog and classic rock, funk, r&b, dance and new wave genres, today’s episode pulls no punches with tracks from Amiga, arcade, 16 bit systems and even some redbook audio! There’s even a newer track buried in here to prove that high score tunes have a life beyond the 80s and 90s! We hope you’ll rank this one high on your podcast list!

Many of today’s indie and AA developers know their retro. That’s why there’s an abundance of amazing games available for modern platforms which channel the games of our pasts. Thankfully, game composers of the current era haven’t forgotten the roots of VGM either, as the amount of modern games which rely on catchy melodies, punchy drums and FM tones is alive and well. On today’s XVGM Radio, Justin and Mike uncover some of their favorite game music styled like the 8-bit and 16-bit tunes that raised them. Tons of interesting conversation about Justin wearing diapers, wax nostalgic Strong Bad references (20XD6!)

Music touches all aspects of the soul. It’s a large part of what makes us human. In tough times or happy moments and everything in between, music can be therapy in many ways and video game music is no different. On today’s episode, we sit down for a chat with Norihiko Hibino and listen to one of his favorite genre offerings: Jazz music. We listen to a few tracks from his latest album, Jazz Resort, Vol. 2. He talks about his influences (John Coltrane,) and shares stories about his time at Konami (What was lunch time like in Konami’s headquarters?) Mike asks some blatantly selfish questions about Castlevania and we learn about some close, personal composer friends of his. We also get to hear stories about Hideo Kojima and how Hibino’s hectic schedule worked when composing for multiple projects at the same time. For Konami, Metal Gear and Jazz fans, this is an episode you DO NOT want to miss!
Huge thanks to Scarlet Moon Productions and Jayson Napolitano for making this happen for us! Check out Hibino’s album, Jazz Resort, Vol 2. Here: https://scarletmoonrecords.bandcamp.com/album/jazz-resort-vol-2

It’s that time of year again! It’s January in a new year and as always with XVGM Radio, we bring in the big guns: NikoTengoku! Our old pal and honorary third co-host Niko joins us once again to ring in 2024 with a somber note: Emotional VGM. Whether the moments in the games touched our heartstrings or the songs made it look like we were cuttin’ onions, we’ve assembled a list of tracks here that hit our souls in a way that other VGM hasn’t. Grab the tissues and shed some tears to the softer side of video game music with 11 songs chosen by the three hosts (and one by Patron Cam Werme) that you’ll remember for days to come. Prepare for some emotional damage on this episode of XVGM Radio!

In 1994, video game system manufacturers were just starting to shift into the realm of 3D-based video game consoles thanks to the fifth generation. But one company decided to continue building upon the legacy of 2D in the mid-90s with their final console release: NEC. The PC-FX was host to 62 games which utilized 2D animated content, with a focus on Japanese animation being highlighted in many of them. With a combination of redbook audio and the same sound chip that was in the PC-Engine (Turbo Grafx-16 for us North Americans,) the PC-FX was host to some incredible musical content. On this episode, Justin schools Mike on “swords and boards,” resident obscure game nerd Nick Carney stops by for a quick call and the boys chat about the wild and wacky world of eroge games! Join Mike and Justin as they analyze just some of the PC-FX’s tunes on the 108th episode of XVGM Radio!

Though Halloween season is over, we’re still playing with gore! XVGM Radio sits down with VGM composer Jason Létourneau to discuss his music in the 8-bit modern retro classic, Infernax. Hear us grill Jason to learn about his process and how some of our favorite modern VGM composers helped him early in his game composing career. Rock out to some seriously sinister and chunky 8-bit riffs, along with stunning arpeggios and sweeping bass lines, all while learning everything you can about this ode to classic games like Castlevania 2: Simon’s Quest, Faxanadu and Zelda 2: The Adventure of Link. Mike and Justin get ready to carve up some wall meat, all while chatting about pie in this excellent composer interview!

Ltd. would continue to work on developing games, mostly on the Super NES and eventually handhelds like the Game Boy Color. Here is where we get to see a bigger shift in focus to games based on licensed IPs as well as being published by the likes of companies such as THQ, Crave, and of course Natsume Inc. Continuing to explore the exciting music from Natsume legends like Iku Mizutani, Kinuyo Yamashita and Hiroyuki Iwatsuki, its a bit bittersweet to close out this look back at the incredible run Natsume has had in video games and video game music. However, right around the corner is the modern re-investment into some of Natsume’s most beloved titles courtesy of Tengo Project, a small group of original Natsume devs who are still with the company today. But for now, join us as we close out this exciting listen to Natsume’s musical history books.
We hope you’ve enjoyed our three part journey through Natsume’s musical history. Do you have any Natsume songs you can recommend to us? Shoot us an email at XVGMRadio@gmail.com or join in on the discussion at: https://www.facebook.com/groups/XVGMradio

It’s Technostasy! Since 1987, Natsumi, a company created by ex-Konami employees, has been one of the best developers from the 8 and 16 bit eras of gaming. However, their history has been muddled by confusing ownership and history to the common fan. Today on XVGM Radio, Mike and Justin uncover the truth behind Natsume’s story in part 1 of a multi-part series on the history of Natsume’s company, games and most importantly, its sound. Hear about the beginnings of the developer and eventual self-publisher, which started out as Natsume Co. Ltd. From 1987 until 1995, the company was host to some of the best soundtracks available. We scratch the surface on these incredible, high energy tracks from the NES, Game Boy, Super NES…and even a PC Engine game?! A handful of legendary composers are spotlighted in this episode, as Mike gushes on his love for Natsume, Justin discusses metal arm replacement options, and the boys wrap up their first 99 episodes with an absolute BANGER of a closing track from none other than….well, you’ll just have to hear it for yourself! This is a can’t miss episode before the XVGM Radio guys hit 100 episodes!

Star Fox 64 is sometimes viewed as the evolution in the Star Fox franchise’s musical journey. But with this more cinematic orchestral vision, the sounds of a more popular style of music has disappeared. But with musician Ro Panuganti’s prowess, Arwing Odyssey is born. A Progressive Metal thematic voyage through most of Star Fox 64’s music, Panuganti brings the modern musical themes back into play. Join us as we speak with him as we compare the original Star Fox 64 tracks with Ro’s updated arrangements. We speak to him about how Respawned Records approached him with the idea and how he had to fit the arrangement into a vinyl format upfront. Listen to Mike and Justin break down both of these styles artisitcally, all while sharing some fun Star Fox 64 memories from the 90s!
Special thank you to Scarlet Moon Records for setting up the interview! Check out their site for more information on the album and other releases!

New Year! New Episode! Starting off 2023, our 5th year as a podcast, we’re joined once again by our good pal, NikoTengoku! The Super Famicom (or as we know it outside of Japan, the Super NES) is host to a COLOSSAL list of excellent game soundtracks, but the Japan exclusive stuff usually gets overlooked. Niko helps us pick 10 awesome tracks that we know you’re gonna love, along with a very, VERY silly episode as per usual with Niko. We poke fun of certain game title names and songs, get a visit from not one but TWO legacy PixelTunes Radio characters, AND officially “knight” Niko as our 3rd co-host! Though his role will remain as a guest contributor to the show, we’re always excited to be joined by Niko and he always brings the funny and engaging discussions to XVGM Radio!

Matt Creamer (AKA Norrin Radd) has been one of our favorite guests (and composers) for some time now, but he’s been holding back from us. He’s unleashed his final musical form in the mold of Slayin’ 2’s original soundtrack and it is A BANGER/ROCKER! Now it’s time for you to feast your ears on over a dozen epic tracks that perfectly merge the worlds of modern and retro VGM. From the guys gettin’ goofy about one of Matt’s inspirations for a song (Home Improvement?!) to Justin poking fun at Mike for picking almost all Grassland tracks, we dissect the soundtrack’s sound like never before on the show and Matt answered all our questions like a pro. Step into the world of this modern retro indie that takes inspiration from Guardian Heroes, the early Ys games and more in this truly SLAYIN’ episode of XVGM Radio!

[Powerpress] It’s well known that Sony’s Playstation 2 dominated sales during the 6th generation of gaming. However, this was also during the era where Sony attempted to take on the task of toppling Nintendo’s handheld juggernaut abilities. Enter the Sony Playstation Portable, Sony’s first major foray into the handheld market. Many games from the PS2 […]
It’s that spooooooooooky time of year again! Celebrate Halloween with the video game music podcast hostesses with the mostestes….that’s a word. Justin and Mike host Spookyfest each year and now that they’re back to their normal outdoor festival activity, you’re in for a fright of a good time! From discussions of Peanuts characters becoming VGM composers to the nostalgia-dripping remembrance of Count Duckula’s airtime, the boils scare no expense as they share their love of spooky game tunes. Mike digs up the bones of his rare appreciation for industrial music and Justin learning that….GASP…he was replaced with a ROBOT?! It’s a howling romp of a VGM festival that we hope you’ll enjoy…PERMANENTLY! MUWAHAHAH!
It’s that time of the year! SPOOKYFEST 2022 is just around the corner! What better way to warm up to the ice cold chill of the crisp autumn air than to join us for the VIP BACkSTAGE PASS, exclusive for Patreon members! Mike and Justin wax malarky while discussing the finer points of Nintendo 3DS Capcom sales, Scooby Doo movie sexiness, and Dracula themed hentai…all while chatting up the usual musical references to Tim Burton movie soundtrack whimsy. Justin pokes fun at Mike as he picks one of the weirdest tracks he’s ever picked on the show, as well as…..lots of unknown composer discussions! This is a fright of a night you won’t want to miss!
The XVGM Radio boys had to plan this live show VERY late, so the theme here is….FREE PICKS! Mike went with stuff he’s been playing and Justin grabbed an assortment of songs he’d been wanting to play for a while. What follows is an exciting conversation about mobile gaming, digital vs physical purchases, how season passes could be affected in the next 15 years, paid content versus DLC, along with some absolute BANGERS. We even threw in a last minute outro after conversing about the song during the episode! Hold onto your steering wheels, we’re going full speed ahead into September’s Patreon Live Show!
Marvel Comics’ X-Men series is a franchise that means a lot to millions all over the planet. In the 90s, it was the pinnacle of X-citing, engaging storytelling coupled with a major media boost thanks to the comics, collectible cards, Saturday morning cartoons and of course, video games. On today’s episode of XVGM Radio, Mike […]
Super Mario Bros. Legend of Zelda. Streets of Rage. Mega Man. Everyone loves to celebrate the songs known to the general public in video game music’s fandom. But what about the songs that reach deep into the farthest netherrealms of VGM? Join a collaboration between three different video game music podcasts (Mike Levy/Justin Schneider from XVGM Radio, Ed Wilson from The VGMbassy and Rob Nichols/Pernell Vaughan from Rhythm & Pixels) as they take a trip into the far reaches of game soundtracks to unearth some of the most obscure stuff you’ve ever heard from your favorite composers. These are songs that only the hardest of hardcore video game music fans know about and now it’s your turn to learn and jam out to the legacy of game music legends.
Indie composers of video games are leading the way with their creativity, ingenuity and hunger to create the next wave of classics. One such composer is Nicole Marie T, who we had the pleasure of interviewing. From her love and appreciation of Sega to her evolution into a Sony fan, Nicole’s video game upbringing shines through her music as she churns out tons of tunes that we showcased in this interview. From hearing about her reaction to seeing her name in the credits of her first game to her excitement over orchestral tunes, you’ll get to hear a prime example of the next generation of VGM composers in this very episode. Justin and Mike are stoked for you to hear the sounds of Ghoulboy, Robozarro and beyond in this composer interview!
It’s a brave new world out there in the land of video games…and Virtual Reality is leading the innovation pack! Justin recently got a VR headset, so the two of them set off on a journey to discover some truly fantastic VR based VGM. In this episode, the two dive into many topics about VR games, including a casual history lesson about VR from the 90s like those big, bulky VR experiences at fairs, Virtual Boy, 3DS and the current PS VR and Oculus. Other topics include praise over Stranger Things Season 4, regrets about not listening to everyone’s VGM podcasts, confusion about the Sam & Max cartoon, discussions about up and coming podcasts and of course Moss on Ross. Don’t miss this one, it was a blast!
If you had to pick four legendary composers that best represents you…as well as all of video game music, who would you pick? Well, that’s the question that our pal Bedroth from VGMVGM (Very Good Music Video Game Music) Podcast asked the community of VGM podcasters…and we broke the rules and picked a bonus one, because we’re rule breakers. Yeah, that’s right. Your boys from XVGM Radio are here to break down all the barriers. All jokes aside though, Mike and Justin pick their heaviest of hitters in their VGM opinions. From discussions on the impressive echo of Iku Mizutani’s NES bangers, to the sentimental tears Justin shed over Final Fantasy 9’s ending, XVGM Radio takes you through some of their favorite composers and the tracks they feel best represent them. Get ready to climb VGM mountain and see the masters of video game music!
Welcome to our June 2022 live show, where we picked three themes that YOU voted on! Today’s episode features video game music based on Arnold Schwarzenegger games! That’s right, ol’ Arnie’s showing up in lots of retro titles…and even a newer one that we feature! We talk about our thoughts on the movies as well as the games, with some conflicting opinions about the True Lies game, defending Terminator 2, sharing our favorite Arnold lines, getting nostalgic for Arnold sound boards from the early 2000s, and of course, an insane amount of bad Arnold impressions (and even some Sly Stallone ones!) Grab your rocket launchers and headphones and get ready for AHHHHNOLD!
Nostalgia can be a powerful thing. Growing up in the 80s and 90s, there was plenty of stuff Mike and Justin reflected on in this episode from their youth. Though as always when they pick a topic, sometimes they approach the idea differently for fun results. Episode 90 is a perfect representation of this method of madness. Listen to the guys wax nostalgia when talking about retro television, cartoons and how the theme songs converted to video games. They also go over the composers on the original theme songs and their thoughts on comparing them. Mike gets goofy with the best anime ever (courtesy of the internet meme about Corey in the House), Justin shares his take on Dragon Ball Z’s music, Mike talks about college drinking games involving Power Rangers, and the guys collectively discuss sick days with Bob Barker, all on this memory-filled episode of XVGM Radio!

Hailed as one of the greatest video game experiences ever, Final Fantasy VII was a game changer. It revolutionized the Japanese Role Playing Game market and the art of storytelling in a video game at the time of its released. Now, almost 23 years later, we are about to see a remade version of the game that captured our hearts back in 1997. But on the eve of Final Fantasy VII Remake’s release date, XVGM Radio sat down with Knight of the Round band member, Justin Taylor, to chat about the significance of the original game, it’s landmark music by Nobuo Uematsu, and showcase KotR’s latest release, a Metal-infused thematic cover album aptly titled: “SEVEN.” We’ll give you one guess what the theme is. When co-hosts pick tracks on a video game music podcast, it’s typically songs they enjoy. But what if you tried to guess which picks your co-host would pick? In this episode, Justin and Mike reverse their picks, allowing Mike to pick tracks he thinks Justin would enjoy, and Justin to choose Mike’s tracks. What follows is an enlightening episode that showcases the strength of how well the two hosts know each other, as we give our Producer-who-is-also-a-Metroid, Janine, a night off. No callers, just two hosts sharing and rating songs they think they other would pick.

Grit your teeth as you plow through innocent bystanders, hold up stores for insurance protection, and burn forests down with your flamethrower...it’s your world in Shakedown Hawaii. The successor to Retro City Rampage had a lot to live up to, and thankfully it doesn’t suffer from sequelitis, as it’s one of the best indie games this year. Take on the role of an aging 1980’s CEO, or his spoiled rotten to the core son, and even a hired mercenary to do the dirty work. All three are at your disposal here as you steal cars, burn down parking lots, and crush anything in your way: including pesky consumer rights! Take on the role of CEO as you figure out the best way to ruin customer’s lives and make cash doing it. Utilizing the NAOMI hardware, Sega was able to easily port games from the arcade to the console market. Sadly, the Dreamcast was Sega’s final original console, released this day 20 years ago on September 9th, 1999, also known as 9-9-99. It’s been 20 years since the console released in North America with a complete onslaught of titles, so today we thought we’d explore the North American side of the console’s video game music. Justin and Mike have picked tons of fantastic music to take you for a ride throughout this celebration. So, roll down your windows, slick those frosted tips back, grab your chain wallet and put on your jeans with the enormous pant legs. Following the N64 smash hit, Goldeneye, RARE lost the Bond license. But this didn’t matter much to them, as their spiritual successor to Goldeneye pushed the Nintendo 64 to its limits. Hailed as one of the greatest First Person Shooters of all time, Perfect Dark introduced gamers to Joanna Dark, the Carrington Institute, the evil corporation Datadyne and the alien races of the Maians and the Skedar. But such a unique Cyberpunk-fused sci-fi stealth journey needed a perfect soundtrack to fit it’s perfect name. Enter Grant Kirkhope, taking over for Graeme Norgate, along with David Clynick; a trifecta of composers that crafted a sound that was as unique on the N64 as it was technically impressive. Today on XVGM Radio, we are extremely excited to bring you an in depth interview with Grant Kirkhope, the primary composer on this stellar shooter. Hear about Grant’s surprising hard rockin’ roots and how a fellow RARE employee helped change his life forever. Listen to Grant’s stories about the E3 where Perfect Dark was showcased, how he and the other composers created the tunes, and what Grant thinks could be Joanna’s favorite cocktail. Count how many times a very excited Mike says “Extravaganza,” and hear Justin be in awe of Grant’s composing style. We promise, this episode won’t leave you in the dark.

Namco, a long time developer and publisher in the video game industry, wanted to take their Famicom development to the next level. They created the NAMCO 163 expansion chip, which enhanced audio capabilities on the Famicom; making the system sound like a PC-Engine at points. A small set of games had this chip installed in it, and while not all of the games we’re talking about took advantage of all 8 additional sound channels, the music is still phenomenal. That’s why Mike and Justin are deep diving into the sound of the NAMCO 163 chip. Listen to some interesting facts about the chip and it’s development, hear Mike try to pronounce Wagan Land, and hear the XVGM gents talk about gold-digging mice brides...all on this very interesting episode of XVGM Radio!

Freedom Planet, the 2014 indie darling developed by Stephen Diduro (aka Strife) set the bar for games influenced by Sonic the Hedgehog and Rocket Knight Adventures. On this episode, we are joined by Lame Genie members Mike Costigan, Kyle Sawaia and Jeff McGowan for a not-so-serious discussion on their band, Taco Bell sponsorships, melting their brains with anagram knowledge, all while comparing 5 of their covers to the songs they’re based on! Sometimes, tracks we pick for the show don’t quite fit a theme or we find something special we want to hold onto for a while, only to unleash it to the world along with a barrage of other ear-melting tracks. Such is the case with free picks. Every 20 episodes, we’ll be gathering up the stragglers that didn’t quite make it onto our themed shows, from games both popular and obscure. From Mike and Justin admitting embarrassing stories about certain tracks and knowing what RPGs are, to multicolor-haired anime girls with digital jiblets, and even talking about controversial murder simulators, Free Picks is a great place to pickup the podcast if you’re new to it!

Most video game music podcasts focus on bringing the nostalgia on hot and heavy. Normally, we partake in this ideology. After all, video games and specific VGM tracks are home to some of our warmest memories from childhood and on. Today, we’ll be diving into the unknown as we explore games we’re told are classics, and yet...we have little to no experience with the games or their soundtracks! Mike and Justin listen to tracks they may not necessarily agree on, compare one of the picks to the Duck Tales theme song and try to figure out what’s on an Aleste Salad (hint: It’s Extra Musha.) All on this extra-exploratory, no-nostalgia classics episode of XVGM Radio!

Back in the 80s and 90s, the Beat ‘Em Up began to evolve into one of the most celebrated (and imitated) genres of all time. However, what was always constantly refreshing were the tunes that arcade and console Beat ‘Em Ups were pumping out, while the quarters were being pumped in. Today on XVGM Radio, Justin and Mike explore the vast musical genres of Beat ‘Em Ups; Get ready to defeat the baddest of foes while these dudes take you through the illest of brawler tracks. From Mega Drive exclusives, to games that never left the arcade, the XVGM boys will have you howling with laughter when they try to figure out who pooped on the lawn. Wait, what?! Close your eyes, slip those headphones on, grab some quarters and get ready to lose yourself to the sound of the Beat ‘Em Up.
Arguably the most popular handheld gaming system in history, the Game Boy was a smorgasbord of great games, all on the go. Thankfully, portability didn’t rule out having a stellar sound chip and this episode is just the tip of the iceberg. We enlist the help of Niko, better known as WiiGuy309 or simply Wii Guy, to help us sort through the entire Game Boy library to bring you some memorable tracks! Between Mike getting the details on the Jungle Book movie completely wrong, to an unofficial sponsorship from Taco Bell, this episode will have you reaching for your monochromatic Game Boys and a pair of headphones!
It's our very first live show! We decided to do a show based on our initials. X (for XVGM Radio) was in the intro theme, MJL for Mike and JKS for Justin! Just something fun to go with initially! Two video game music podcast hosts are here to talk about the soundtracks from Data East’s yesterday….Are you a BAD ENOUGH DUDE to listen all the way through?! Mike and Justin are revisting the glory of Data East’s arcade and home offerings, both from the developer themselves, or their affiliated hired developer. You’ll hear plenty of time travelling arcade bangers that’ll make you want to sink your lips onto the straw of an Ecto Cooler, but save room for chats about nuclear fallout, lyrical goofiness in VGM, and weapons looking like lipstick cases. Presented by Data East, it’s time to travel back in time for the good old 80s and mid-90s and rock out with some tubular gaming jams! Thanks so much to Kung Fu Carlito for the info regarding the Capcom Fujitas so we could dig deeper and get more info to clarify some previous Capcom-related follies at the top of the show!
Plenty of games nowadays have tried to emulate and pay tribute to Castlevania: Symphony of the Night. A game that tells the story of a blue-haired Time Messenger named Lunais, in a side scrolling, action-platforming adventure that will even send yourself time travelling: with a huge contribution to this feeling from composer Jeff Ball. DAT SUNSOFT BASS! Sunsoft was arguably one of the best developers when it came to sound hardware on the Nintendo Entertainment System, and there's no better example than Mr. Gimmick. Better known as Gimmick in its native land, this game (which remained exclusive to Japan and Scandinavian territories) showcased what happened when composer Masashi Kageyama took inspiration from his fellow employees' taste in music, and injected it into this love letter to platform game fans. Despite never receiving this one in North America, the soundtrack and game have been praised as one of the most underrated on the console, with many people reproducing the game as best as they can with Sunsoft's 5B chip. But the FME-7, the heart and soul of this soundtrack, remains exclusive to the Japanese Famicom console due to the system's ability to read audio chips. Join Justin and Mike as they delve into the chip's history, and share their thoughts on Gimmick's incredible soundtrack, the game's levels, and the little green protagonist, Umetaro!
The late 1980s and early 1990s was an age full of change in video game music, and that shift into higher quality was arguable when it came to the Commodore 64. Mike and Justin take a listen to a list of tracks which may surprise listeners and will have you wondering...which one sounds better! From Double Dragon adult film discussion, to trying to name the SID chip with goofy names, plus a “brand new Tim Follin soundtrack and game?!” Sold.
