"In performIng all the years I have raced, the wins were great, the friendships were the greatest," says Koegel.
I have been interested in racing cars all my life. But as with everything else, rearing a family, work and life got in the way of my biggest dream: racing in ARCA and eventually NASCAR. I began to think about calling it quits...but then the unthinkable happened....
A friend from work needed a driver for one night just to keep his points. All I had to do is finish the race. Well, the car ran so good I finished second. I beat a large field of young drivers. That was nice.
The whole time I was racing the kids would watch TV with me and I would tell them I knew this guy or that guy. They would humor me and say yes we know. Then last year we were watching Daytona, a guy crashed real bad, I point at the TV and they say YES WE KNOW you know him. I did. It was Barry Fitzgerald from 35 years ago. I called him the next day. He said he will be in Texas racing next. I need to come out and help. After the races we sat in a café talking about old times and he says YOU CAN DO THIS. The car owner said I can help any time I want to at any track. Then The big one, YOU CAN DRIVE ONE OF MY CARS.
Steve McAllister was born and raised in Sarasota, Florida. After attending three different high schools and three different colleges, trying countless different career paths and living in several different locations, Steve was diagnosed with Attention Deficit Disorder at the age of twenty-nine.
With a degree in Psychology from Mars Hill College and Film Production Technology from Valencia Community College in Orlando, Florida, Steve produced the documentary Attention Deficit Disorder: Life at a Different Pace. He has since produced other such films as The Tide From Red to Blue, Yearning for Light, and Lesson Learned.
In 2001, Steve followed up his debut novel Descent by venturing out on the road to write his travelogue The Rucksack Letters. By car, hitchhiking, and motorcycle, Steve traveled through twenty-six states, visiting various communities ranging from a Buddhist monastery and yoga ashrams to hippie communes and New York City. The book was initially published electronically through emails as he traveled. The first edition was put into print in 2006 and a revised edition is expected in 2010.
Steve has also performed in his one man show The Rucksack Cabaret, in the Manatee Players’ production of Hank Williams: Lost Highway as the iconic songwriter, Banyan Theatre Company’s production of Moon for the Misbegotten and the debut of Jenny Beres‘ new play Hay Day in July 2009.
Due to the economy I was recently faced with the challenge of starting over. When my 35-year real estate career came to an end I, like so many other millions of Americans, had to re-examine my life. I fit right into the age group most likely to be laid off; Boomers (age 47-63), too young to retire, too old to start over and the nest egg has crumbled.
What are the options? Living under a bridge? Winning the Lottery? Both had odds I wasn't willing to explore. It seemed so obvious to me. I went back to the basics of American self-reliance? So, without any formal background in business, finance, manufacturing or distribution I decided to "hire myself" and become an entrepreneur/inventor.
Everyone said it couldn't be done and I wouldn't be able to survive, much less compete with BIG business. But luckily I didn't listen to them. I combined my creative talents, hobbies and passions, with my business expertise and invented and distributed my own line of innovative products. I successfully marketed my inventions to online stores, gift catalogs, major retail chains and yes even to the coveted electronic retailer QVC.
Not only did I prove the Nay Sayers wrong I also proved to myself that anything is possible. I'm now able to share my story, advice and experience with other Boomers who may be facing unemployment. I have partnered with the Small Business Development Center and the Women's Business Center (all part of the US Small Business Administration) offering mentoring and training to aspiring entrepreneurs.
I came to SCORE because I was seeking guidance and creative means to purchase a property to some day open a healing center. Because of the healing affects changing my diet has had on my life, I want to share my passion and knowledge with others. You see once you heal your body physically, you can then work on the I also shared about my biggest event to date where Carol Alt, Super Model and actress used some of the recipes of some of my potluckers as well as one of my own in her new book "The Raw 50". I asked that Carol Alt come and speak at one of my raw potlucks. The timing worked out that it was when I hold a raw family picnic at Victory Park in July. The timing was perfect. Now let me take a side step. Henry said after hearing my story..Lisa with your knowledge and personality you should have a raw cooking show like Rachael Ray with raw demos and interviews and that I should contact one of your SCORE members..a Mr. Dick Powell, who is a retired tv producer.
