This week’s MindEspresso is about how to break conflict loops from the book Optimal Outcomes by Jennifer Goldman-Wetzler. She points out that conflict styles together with shadow values often get us stuck in loops.

She advocates 1. Creating awareness around our conflict by understanding our conflict styles 2. Zooming out by mapping to break the cycle and getting clear on the underlying values (ideal and shadow) behind the conflict 3. Choosing ideal future states and focusing on optimal outcomes.

This MindEspresso is about “not doing” so that you can focus on the things that matter. I’ll be looking at the brand new book The Not Doing List by Alexander Bant (He/Him), in it he shares his unique philosophy of creating a Not Doing List to guide your focus. As Steve Jobs said “Deciding what not to do is as important as deciding what to do,” which is the advice he gave to the CEO of Nike “Just get rid of the crappy stuff and focus on the good stuff.”

And of course what you don’t do is the essence of strategy — eliminating the things that don’t give you leverage or strategic advantage to focus on the unique things that create leverage is the whole point of strategy.

As Bant says;

“So how do some leaders accomplish so much more? They are simply better at saying no. They appear to do it all, when in reality they are laser focused on what they won’t do. Their yes-to-no ratio is radically different from yours. “

This week’s MindEspresso looks at the importance of self-talk. As the Navy Seals preach you need to dominate your own self-talk or it will dominate you. This MindEspresso is about the traits of elite leadership demonstrated by champions such as Tom Brady.

Sam Walker (now a leadership columnist for the WSJ) studied success on elite teams and what he found is that elite teams had elite leaders, leaders who were willing to do the dirty work,
who were focused and persistent,
who were constantly coaching,
who were pushing the boundaries...

En total he identified 7 traits of elite leaders who drove sustained success over time in the world of sports.

This MindEspresso is about the need and the purpose for #selfcompassion in your life. Recently an old friend (who I hadn’t talked to in some 10 years) took his own life. He was one of the most talented people I’d ever met, yet he never seemed to measure up to his own expectations. It made me reflect on one of the most profound insights I came across in my 5 years of podcast interviews with thought leaders: that self-compassion is a prerequisite for high performance and happiness. https://lnkd.in/etAsTZ3

Without self-compassion, you create anxiety, unneeded suffering and performance blocks. Lack of self-compassion can make you feel stuck and alone, prevent a healthy growth mindset, blind you to positive choices and sap you from motivations that move you forward. In a team setting, lack of self-compassion can cause cycles of self-pity and blame.

This MindEspresso on self-compassion looks at work by Dr. Andy Walshe, the former head of the Red Bull high-performance team, Kristen Neff, the author of Self-compassion, and Eckard Tolle, the author of the Power of Now.

The secret to confidence and becoming a creator is to: 1. Operate with an abundance mentality and 2. Judge your worth by your internal values. The key to living with confidence is to know that you can create a better world in alignment with your own values.

This vacation MindEspresso is about faux-influence versus real influence. Many people think “influence” is about making a good argument, being convincing and repeating... they don’t realize this thinking actually makes everyone else think LESS of their argument, think LESS of them and LESS-likely to ever want to talk to them again. Real influence is about understanding how someone sees a problem and helping them see that problem in a better light.

Why creating self discipline also creates self-confidence and ultimately freedom. Many people value what they think is “freedom” because choice in their minds means they don’t have to follow rules and that feels “free”, but ultimately that thinking creates less freedom and stops your progress.

So how to develop self discipline? 1. Be clear about your why and create a long term and short term plan that focuses on progress. 2. Prepare for distractions. 3. Create good habits and an environment for success.

This Mind-Espresso is about reducing bias and fostering better decision-making featuring the work of Nobel prize winning behavioral economist Daniel Kahneman from his book Thinking, Fast and Slow. This Mind Espresso is about mindset training; how to develop the mindset to take control of, and responsibility for, your emotional state. Many of us get stuck in hyper-reactive loops, where it seems like every time we feel peace we’re hit with some other news story that sends us spiraling: pandemic, politics, social discord... When you’re being assaulted by bad news it’s important to shift from victim to empowerment and take control of your emotional state. These lessons are from Tony Robbins and Amy Cuddy.

The word failure just plain frightens and immobilizes people, as if a failure somehow means you, personally, are a failure. It's that fear, that we will be proven less than we think we are, that stops us from trying and growing and can ensnare us in a trap of insecurity. There are four lessons I've culled from our conversations with executives and coaches that help me reframe my fear of failure:

  • Fear and Anxiety are Energy
  • Failure is A Necessary Step Toward Success
  • Failure is Not Personal
  • There is Dignity in Failure

At some point you’re going to feel anxious, scared, depressed or angry. Feelings are normal, they are calls to action, to motivate and inspire.  It is only when you allow your moods to control you that they become problems. Feelings just are and, logical or not, they are your truth at that moment and can‘t be ignored.  But emotions can be deceiving because they are only true for as long as the emotion lasts. Emotions are not absolutes, but signals.  They only become a problem when you’re out of balance.  In these states you misread situations and make poor choices.

The secret to confidence is to operate with an abundance mentality and be driven by internal values.   If you live with a scarcity mentality you'll always be in a fearful state.  If you live by others rules, you'll never feel in control.  The key to living with confidence is to know that you can create a better world in alignment with your own values.

Negativity cycles are easy to slip into and sometimes hard to break. Because we're built to avoid negatives more than find positives, we can easily slip into states where we start coloring our world with negativity and projecting negativity out into the world.

MindRevv shares compelling research from Dr. Barbara Fredrickson, Shirzad Chamine and Dr. John Gottman about  the need to prime ourselves with positive thinking

Because humans are innately negative, we tend to generate negative thoughts over positive thoughts. Choosing positive constructive thoughts are the simplest way to create immediate life change. You have to use, visualize and ask on a daily basis. Persistence is your ally.

As you improve your positivity ratio, you will notice that negative thoughts happen less often and positive thoughts regenerate and the more positive outcomes you expect, the more likely you are to receive them.

Emotions are short-lived signals that alert us to act differently. After the emotion passes, we have a choice as to what mode we want to best approach our day in.  We're not chained to the emotion that passed through us, we can choose another mode if the one we're experiencing isn't useful to us.

Optimism is to a certain extent predetermined, but it's also heavily influenced by our mental process.  How we interpret the world, our moods, our self-image and the thoughts we generate all play a role in our reactions and our state of mind.  Using your mind muscles deconstructs the process to help you understand where you have the ability to direct your mood.
