The Lord commands Saul to completely and utterly destroy the Amalekites. Amalek was the grandson of Esau, and Esau is often used as a picture of the non-elect, whose lineage produced wicked nations. Elder Chris points out that in Exodus, the Amalekites attacked the Israelites from the rear. Now that Israel had a king and had become strong, the Lord commanded Saul to destroy them. But Saul did not fully carry out the Lord’s commandment. Elder Chris considers the nature of Amalek as a picture of wickedness, while also showing that the children of God must deal with the nature of sin within themselves. We are commanded to mortify our carnal desires and the deeds of the body. The problem with Saul was that his ego got the better of him. Elder Chris encourages us to always see ourselves as little, and to let the Lord exalt.

Brother Paul reminds us that God, the Lord of hosts, has won the battle, and encourages us to be strong in His might.

Elder Adam turns to 1 Samuel where we read that Samuel delivers a difficult message to king Saul that he had sinned by not wiping out the Amalekites and keeping king Agag alive. Samuel told Agag come here and he met vengeance. Elder Adam points out that God has every right to demand obedience, but when Jesus says come here to me, we are changed. It is comforting to hear Jesus say come here, and enjoy His presence of peace.

After the ark of God was restored from being captive with the Philistines, the children of Israel began to acknowledge their sin and put away other strange gods. Israel raised up a stone as a memorial where the Lord had helped them. Elder Chris explains that it is sweet when the Lord hears our cry and we can recognize when he hears us. We can draw strength by looking at the memorials setup throughout our lives. Those unique experiences prove that we can trust the Lord both now and in the future.
