This year's debate centered on the topic: "India: The Potential of Recycling Water and Waste – Myth and Reality in Achieving a Circular Economy."
Our goal was to explore and develop sustainable solutions for India’s water challenges by leveraging both Indian and Nordic knowledge and technology. We were fortunate to have an exceptional lineup of speakers and panelists who shared their insights and expertise on this critical topic.
We also focused on Indo-Norwegian cooperation projects, particularly in waste management – an area ripe for conversation.

As we approach 8 March, we're excited to shed light on the journey of Kristin Andresen and the inspiration behind her remarkable initiative, Sunder Rang.
At the World Economic Forum, Union Women and Child Development Minister Smriti Irani emphasized the need to normalize conversations around women's challenges. India, under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has made significant strides with the construction of 110 million toilets. Additionally, for the first time in our nation's history, there's a dedicated administrative protocol for menstrual hygiene management established by the central government.
Gender equality remains one of the greatest human rights challenges of our time. Investing in women isn't just a moral imperative; it's a fundamental step towards building inclusive societies. Progress for women benefits us all.

This month The Modern India (Det Moderne India) was co organizer at the International Climate Summit held on 14-15 September, 2023 in New Delhi. The Conference had more than 60,000 people attending physically and virtually combined! 60 000!
This mega event unfolded at the prestigious Vigyan Bhawan, a venue reserved for only the most distinguished guests — usually graced by the presence of the President, Vice President, or Prime Minister of India.
ICS 2023 had the honor of hosting the former President of India, Shri Ram Nath Kovind.
We rolled out the first The Indo-Nordic Cooperation seminar, which focused on Clean Energy and Renewables. The session fostered collaboration between India and the Nordic countries in clean energy, sustainability, and renewable technologies. This session focused on two key aspects: cities and the unique offerings of individual Nordic countries towards the Indian market. 2 rooms had to be set up to give space to the audience present at the Indo-Nordic Cooperation session.
It was an overwhelming and humbling experience to be part of this mega event. The credit goes to PHD Chamber of Commerce and industry, Sturle Harald Pedersen and my partner in crime Knut Linnerud. Special thanks to all the amazing women who joined us. DEIB is core of DMI. We always try to give women an equal seat at the table.

We in Norway know the worth of having what we want! We got proof of that when Sadhguru visited Norway in June this year.
We knew for a while that we were going to have a great visit from India. We almost also knew the time, but not whether this visit actually came to fruition. The final date and confirmation only came six days before the visit started.
Over 50 companies met Sadhguru at the Storting. Great that Kompass NRK is making a separate broadcast of Sadhguru's visit to Norway.

Norway and India share a long maritime history, and maritime issues are central to the bilateral dialogue between our two countries. Our guest for this episode is Cristina.
Cristina Saenz de Santa Maria is responsible for DNV’s maritime operations in South East Asia Pacific & India since October 2017 in her capacity as Vice President, Regional Manager.
She has worked in newbuilding and operations phases as a ships surveyor and project manager in Spain, Portugal, South Korea and Norway.
In 2015 she became responsible for DNV GL’s maritime and oil & gas operations in Africa in her capacity as Area Manager and Country chair for Africa until September 2017.
A significant channel to start reducing carbon emissions is by using coastal shipping. Coastal shipping is widely acknowledged as a viable and effective substitute for road transportation.
India can look to the unique Norwegian shipping ecosystem for inspiration. Norway is at the forefront of developing and using technology and concepts that help to reduce emissions and improve the environment. Norway becoming one of the most advanced maritime nations in the world today.

Our built environment is also one of the largest sources of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, and drives a significant amount of air pollution in our cities.
The ‘Clean Construction’ approach promotes the reduction of air pollutants from construction activities. The Government of India launched the National Clean Air Programme (NCAP), in 2019, that aims to reduce air pollution levels by 20-30% by 2024.
In this episode we have invited a guest who represents the private sector: Kristin Sæterøy. She has hands on knowledge on clean construction.

This is how we attempt to drive the transition towards clean construction.
OSLO-the first city in the world that began with the first zero-emission urban
construction by using only electrified construction equipment. Oslo is also leading the Clean Construction Forum @ C40.
New C40 research reveals that fossil gas use contributed almost as much as coal power plants to premature deaths in 2020 and current NDCs would result in 776,000 more premature deaths in C40 cities by 2050, compared to a 1.5oC scenario. In contradiction with their own inadequate NDCs, key nations are undertaking a gas expansion that will add 86% to gas use capacity in and around C40 cities by 2035, while a 1.5oC scenario would require a 30% decrease.
While in the seven years since world leaders signed the Paris Agreement, no nation has developed 1.5°C-compatible plans, 62 C40 cities have done so, with more in the works.
Three quarters of C40 cities are reducing emissions faster than their respective nation states. Thanks to the work of cities around the world, air pollution is down 5%.

Save Soil is a global movement launched by Sadhguru to address the soil crisis, by bringing together people from around the world to stand up for Soil Health. Furthermore, it supports leaders of all nations to institute national policies and actions toward increasing the organic content in cultivable Soil.
Agriculture, deforestation, and other factors have degraded and eroded topsoil at alarming rates. Globally, 52% of agricultural land is already degraded. The planet is in crisis. If current rates of soil degradation continue, this would cause the end of life as we know it.

Cochin Shipyard Ltd has built two autonomous electric vessels for ASKO Maritime AS, Norway

The two vessels are central to ASKO’s passion for sustainability and for driving business efficiency. It currently has a fleet of some 700 trucks and trailers and aims to become carbon neutral in 2026.

The construction project is partially funded by the Norwegian Government with the aim of setting up an emission-free transport of goods across the Oslo fjord.

The Klemetsrud CO2 capture and storage project will be the world’s first waste-to-energy plant with full-scale CCS by 2026.

(ONGC) Oil and Natural Gas Corporation Limited signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Equinor ASA, the Norwegian state-owned multinational energy company, for energy exploration and climate change mitigation options in March this year.
And just a week back, Celsio - Oslo’s district heating company - who is also heading the Klemetsrud project secured its funding.
Jannicke is Director CCS (Carbon Capture and Storage) in Celsio,
Jannicke is heading the full-scale carbon capture project at Norway’s largest waste-to-energy plant since 2018.
She has expertise in developing CO2 capture and climate technology as well as sustainable energy production and energy recovery in accordance with technical, political and commercial requirements.

Heidi Sørensen is the Director of the Climate Agency, City of Oslo.
🇳🇴 In her youth, Sørensen was an active environmentalist and was leader of both Natur og Ungdom and Friends of the Earth Norway. She was elected to the Parliament of Norway from Oslo in 2001.
🇳🇴 She became State Secretary to the Minister of the Environment between 2007-2012 and left national politics in 2013.
🇳🇴 Sørensen was a member of the Norwegian Consumer Council from 1997 to 2001, the Norwegian Board of Technology from 1999, the board of the Research Council of Norway from 2000, and the Norwegian School of Sport Sciences from 2013.
🇳🇴 She has also been a member of committees producing Norwegian Official Reports on energy and waste management.

While recognition of genders outside of male and female has only recently been discussed in Western societies, in the Indian society, people of non-binary gender expressions have played important roles for over 2000 years.
India's Supreme Court has ruled that transgender people are created as a third gender in the country. The decision is seen as a milestone in India. This was the first time in world history that a Supreme Court recognizes transgender people as a separate gender.
Diversity campaigns and Pride flagging notwithstanding: Research indicates that it is difficult to be a trans person in working environments. According to the report "Sexual orientation, gender diversity and living conditions" from 2021, transgender people stand out in terms of mental health, life satisfaction and experiences of discrimination.

The information campaign is inspired by a Dutch LinkedIn campaign called Peter. There are more leaders in the Netherlands named Peter than there are female leaders in total.
Among the 100 highest paid leaders in Norway, there are as many named Arne as there are women in total.
As DEIB is in the core of DMI, we have decided to support #arnekampanjen.

🧘🏽 In 2017, Sadhguru also launched Rally for Rivers, a campaign to raise awareness about the dire state of India’s rivers, which was supported by 162 million people, making it the largest ever ecological initiative of its kind.
Erik Solheim was Executive Director of the UN Environment Programme between May 2016 and November 2018.
♻️ Prior to joining UN Environment, Solheim was the chair of the Development Assistance Committee of the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development.
♻️ From 2007 to 2012, Solheim held the combined portfolio of Norway’s Minister of the Environment and International Development, and from 2005 to 2007 served as Minister of International Development. This unique portfolio mixture allowed him to bring a coherent approach to development and the environment.
♻️ During his time as Minister, Norwegian aid reached 1 per cent, the highest in the world.
♻️ Erik also put into place the Nature Diversity Act, which many consider to be Norway’s most important piece of environmental legislation in the last 100 years. The Norwegian Climate and Forest Initiative, in which Norway cooperates closely with Brazil, Indonesia, Guyana and other countries to conserve rainforests, was also established under Solheim.
♻️ In addition to his role in government and international development, Solheim served has UN Environment’s Special Envoy for Environment, Conflict and Disaster and a Patron of Nature for the International Union for the Conservation of Nature.
♻️ He has also received a number of awards for his work on climate and the environment, including UN Environment’s Champions of the Earth award, TIME Magazine’s Hero of the Environment, and an honorary doctorate from TERI University in Delhi, India. He has also written three books: Den store samtalen, Naermere, and Politikk er a ville.
♻️ Prime minister Narendra Modi recoqnizes Erik as a friend of India and wrote a letter to him last week. On the Republic Day of 🇮🇳
India now officially has more females than males. There has been a demographic shift.
According to latest data released by the Indian government from the National Family Health Survey (NFHS), there are now 1,020 women for every 1,000 men. Women’s economic empowerment is highly connected to poverty reduction because women tend to invest their earnings into their communities and family’s development. According to World Bank estimates, India’s women in workforce contribute 17% to GDP, which is less than half the global average.
Norway was the first country in the world to put a 40% gender quota on boards of listed companies and public enterprises. Plan International is a development and humanitarian organisation that works to advance children’s rights and equality for girls. The Association of Business Women in Commerce & Industry (ABWCI), on the other hand, is an integrated platform dedicated to the economic empowerment of women in business.

Orkla Foods is the largest business area in Orkla, with operations in 15 countries in Europe and a strong food business in #India. Net sales in 2020 was NOK 18 billion, and Orkla Foods has in total 7,500 employees. Over the last two years, he has held, in parallel, both the positions of CEO for Orkla Care's business area and EVP for Orkla’s Group Operations and #Procurement, responsible for more than 100 factories around the globe, and sourcing for more than NOK 20 billion annually.
Last year Orkla entered into an agreement to acquire 67.8 per cent of the shares in Eastern Condiments Private Limited (“Eastern”). With this move, Orkla will double its sales in India.
In 2013, India became the first country to mandate corporate social responsibility with the Companies Act of 2013. 9 years down the road. How does India view ESG?

At COP26 - UN Climate Change Conference, countries committed to new, ambitious targets for reducing greenhouse gas emissions this decade. Delivering on these promises will rely on the development, financing and scale up of green technologies. China and India, the two biggest producers, consumers and importers of coal, sparked the last-minute drama at the COP26 talks by forcing a compromise that led from "phase out" to be changed to "phase down."

This is the time to look at a world redesign beyond the narrow national interests, to one which would serve the best interests of people and our planet.
In the late nineteenth century, the three great powers were imperial Britain, the United States, and a rising Germany. In the mid-twentieth century, the US, Britain and the Soviet Union formed the dominant troika.
As the twenty-first century enters its second quartile, the three most important nations will be the US, China, and India.
The most remarkable phenomenon in Asia in the 21st century is arguably the economic rise of China and India. Amazingly, the two most populous countries in the world are uplifting millions of their citizens annually from poverty through rapid economic growth. India will be the third largest economy in the world by 2030.

This space podcast dives into the big picture of what is going on in space exploration these days. Since the Moon race in the 60’s when it was the United States and the Soviet Union racing to put the first man on the surface of the Moon, the situation today is much more diversified. More countries are involved, both China, India, many European countries and new space nations like the United Arab Emirates, are initiating projects to explore the Moon and Mars. And not to forget Elon Musk with his Starship, with very ambitious goals and soon maybe other rich entrepreneurs with their own space projects.
How can Europe play a role, and can smaller countries like Norway make a difference? Is there a role for both larger and smaller companies?
Finally, the importance of international collaboration. Will the exploration efforts be done in a cooperative manner? Is it possible to ensure rule-based based on laws that everyone will follow, for both countries and companies.

New data is made available by innovative new satellites that could benefit both societal needs and new business plans. It is important to merge data available from ground with space data in order to enable new services in various fields like maritime surveillance, property monitoring, agriculture, construction, finance and insurance. Space solutions, satellites and launchers have become cheaper, paving the way for a new generations of experts and entrepeneurs entering the space arena with new concept and business ideas both building and using satellite data in a more efficient way. This is what we call NEW SPACE.
We elaborated on the Indian regulatory regime and the opening of the commercial space community in India. Concretely, we mentioned maritime surveillance and micro-launchers as possible Indian-Norwegian cooperation opportunities.
Finally, we talked about the new sense of entrepreneurship, integration of IT and space domain involving players in the cloud and data processing value chain and the need for a wide variety of competences in the new race for space data.
What happens when you put two global guys - one from metropolitan New Delhi, the other from a village in the North of Norway - on the same rooftop in the Barcode of Oslo? They solve all the world’s problems. At least for a moment. That’s what occurred the other day, when Det Moderne India invited Sony Kapoor, the re-knowned thinker and international adviser on economic and political affairs, for a chat Thoralf Stenvold, our editor of the month. Their subject was Sustainability. The two gentlemen, both alumni of the London School of Economics with truly transnational careers, touched upon India’s transformation, the Nordic model, climate change, inequality and global governance, including with an eye to the UN Security Council, where both their countries will take a seat in the coming year.
