Getting Out & About

It has been quite some time since I've written here on the subject of the COVID pandemic. I'd taken the view that people in general, are just sick to death of hearing viruses and the efforts being put in to create a suitable vaccine to combat each variant.

Let's face it. We're all pretty fed up being stuck at home. Parents are fed up with their kids not being in school. Wandering around supermarkets getting the food shopping done, you can see by looking at people, they have had enough living their lives behind their masks.

So amidst all the bleak news, it was refreshing to see the number of first doses of anti-COVID vaccines has now passed the 13 million mark.

Listening to the media, there seems to be a lot of effort going in to adverts to persuade people to take the vaccine whether they be on radio, TV, online or within so-called editorialised sections of programmes.

So with that in mind I wanted to share my thoughts on getting a vaccine. I decided to record them in an audio file during January 2021, only now taking the time to share them online.

Like so many other people out there, I want my life back. I want to be able to go back to doing the things I want to do, rather than the things the law of the land compels me to do. I want my freedom to roam back. At random times of day or night I want to be able to head out in my car, hit the road and see where journey takes me. I want to be back out exploring, visiting new places and meeting new people.

However, to get back to that way of life, we are going through a period, as a nation, where we have to constantly assess the current risks we face.

Take a listen to the audio. That's me, my real voice, talking unscripted. I hope it will make you pause, think, assess and take the action you feel is appropriate.

Today I bring you a first hand account of strangeness from East Yorkshire. Back in February 2018 I took a trip down to Bempton Cliffs expecting only to see and photograph sea-birds.

I got more than I bargained for that day. In the audio I recorded whilst on site, I describe what happened, what I saw, or perhaps that should be what I think I saw?

I was genuinely surprised that something like this would happen in daylight and when you listen to the audio, you'll hear the confusing in my voice as I try to make sense of it all. I never expected to be bringing you this first hand account over two years later and still not have a logical or rational explanation of what it was.

I am told that other people have seen lights out to sea there. They seem as though they mainly report orange lights whereas what I saw was a luminescent white, a bit like an old light bulb in colour. I know it definitely was not a bird and found it odd that instead of trying to reach for my camera I was transfixed with disbelief.

Paul Sinclair remains the leading researcher relating to Bempton and is rapidly becoming known as a global expert in the field. I would highly recommend his books. (No I'm not getting paid to say that - I just found them fascinating.) And if you get a chance to visit the area after the lockdown and pandemic are over do. You never know, you may see something as well.

In the meantime if you have any sightings in your own area do let me know.

When you mention the word 'alien' in the UK, people tend to think of extraterrestrials. However, another 'alien' may be lurking amongst us, an 'alien big cat'. We're joined by Andy, a local expert on the Durham Puma.

Some people feel the prospect of a breeding population of large cats in the wild is not sustainable, whilst others take the contrary view. The number of sightings, whilst relatively low, remain at a significant level and experienced outdoors folk know how easy it is to traverse tracts of land without attracting attention. Add to that the aftermath of attacks on farming livestock the prospect of Pumas roaming the countryside becomes a distinct possibility.
