If you’re eating a healthy diet and you’re still dealing with fatigue, inflammation, anxiety, recurrent injuries, or chronic pain, the problem could be your spinach, almonds, sweet potatoes, and other trusted plant foods. And your key to vibrant health may be quitting these so-called superfoods.
After suffering for decades from chronic health problems, nutrition educator Sally K. Norton, MPH, discovered that the culprits were the chemical toxins called oxalates lurking within her “healthy,” organic plant-heavy diet. This book shines light on how our modern diets are overloaded with oxalates and offers fresh solutions including:

Weight loss is one of our top health concerns, so much so that we keep looking for good ways to lose weight, preferably a way that is easy, effective, and permanent. It turns out that, when properly chosen, certain foods cause weight loss, with no need for the deprivation and planning that most weight-loss regimens require.
In his next book, leading nutrition researcher and author Dr. Neal Barnard reveals three breakthroughs that are supported by research, revealing that certain foods:
1. can reduce the appetite
2. trap calories so they are flushed away and cannot be absorbed, and,
3. increase the body's ability to burn calories for about three hours after each meal. These breakthroughs make weight loss incredibly easy, without calorie counting or deprivation. This diet encourages people to eat, not to stop eating. Dr. Barnard also reveals that some of the foods we think are good for us can actually be harmful, like salmon, goat cheese, and coconut oil, all of which pass easily into body fat...and often overstay their welcome. To make it easy, Dr. Barnard will include a simple to follow meal plan that includes delicious, and even indulgent recipes which include foods we have often been told to avoid, like potatoes and pasta, so you can eat real food, and still lose real weight.
The New Approach to Health:
Using Power Foods to Cause Rapid, Permanent Weight Loss
Scientists have found that certain foods trigger weight loss automatically. Unlike the usual approach to dieting which focuses on going hungry and avoiding the foods you love, the Power Foods approach encourages you to add specific foods that cause weight loss.
Power Foods work in three ways: First, they trigger satiety, taming your appetite so that you naturally eat less. Second, they trap calories in your digestive tract and carry them out with the wastes. Third, they ramp up your metabolism, so you burn calories faster hour after hour.
There are dozens of Power Foods, including common, everyday foods, like blueberries, melons, apples, and asparagus, as well as certain spices (cinnamon, ginger, and hot peppers). Blueberries, for example, get their color from anthocyanins, which have been associated with weight loss in research studies. Cinnamon contains a natural ingredient that boosts metabolism. Weight loss can be as easy as including these foods in your daily routine, say, with French toast made with cinnamon and topped with blueberry syrup.
The Power Foods and how to use them are spelled out in the Power Foods Diet, the new book by Neal Barnard, MD, author of the best-sellers Power Foods for the Brain and The 21-Day Weight-Loss Kickstart.
In this scientifically proven program, Power Foods do the work for you at home, at restaurants—anywhere you eat. You will never count calories again. And while exercise is always a good idea, the program works whether you exercise or not.
The Power Foods Diet includes 120 mouthwatering recipes, from French Toast and Wild Blueberry Muffins to Creamy Chipotle Butternut Soup, Southwest Chili, and Pesto Spaghetti with Broccoli and Sundried Tomatoes. And don’t forget dessert! The Power Foods ingredients are built into Blueberry Pops, Triple Berry No Churn Sorbet, a Fruity Banana Split, and Carrot Cake. There are also plenty of tips for people who prefer convenience foods or who generally eat in restaurants.
The approach is revolutionary:
• Power Foods bring you a healthier weight, healthier cholesterol level, lower blood pressure, and healthier blood sugar.
• Power Foods boost your energy, making you look and feel younger.
• Power Foods let you end “dieting” forever.
• Power Food allow you to enjoy eating again—at home or restaurants. No more skimpy portions.
• Among the Power Foods are those under study for their ability to reduce the risk of cancer and Alzheimer’s disease.

Music is something most people enjoy but research shows it also has therapeutic and healing properties.
Music can help decrease chronic pain and lower depression. The right song can stimulate serotonin and dopamine levels, the body’s neurotransmitters that regulate emotional well-being. It can help lower heart rate, blood pressure, and reduce the stress hormone called cortisol.
Joining Dr. Friedman is Bill Protzmann, an accomplished musician who has spent decades studying the healing power of music.
He is a successful IT entrepreneur who holds magna cum laude degrees in piano performance and creative writing. He’s an Associate Member of the American Music Therapy Association and a member of the Healing Music Organization.

Are you having a hard time losing weight no matter what diet you try?
Research shows chemicals in food, the cookware used to prepare it, and even the containers we store our food in may be the cause of the growing obesity epidemic. Exposure to these chemicals has been shown to interfere with the way the body metabolizes fat, which can lead to weight gain, even if you eat a healthful diet and exercise regularly.
In this episode of To Your Good Health Radio, Dr. Friedman exposes hidden chemicals that may be sabotaging your weight loss goals and he shares what you can do about it.
We hear about a common chemical used in plastics for food and drink storage that mimics estrogen and has been proven to increase fat cell growth, the biggest issue facing our nation is the childhood obesity epidemic, and how to read food labels for “hidden ingredients” that are linked to weight gain.
Life comes with hardships. For some people being single is difficult, while for others staying married is stressful. Having kids is tough, yet for some people, so is not having children to share their life with. Being overworked can cause stress, but so does being unemployed.

Dr. William Li has compiled scientific evidence behind over 200 health-boosting foods, that can stave cancer, reduce your risk of dementia, and beat dozens of avoidable diseases.
His book, Eat to Beat Disease: The New Science of How Your Body Can Heal Itself, isn't about what foods to avoid, but rather is a life-changing guide to the hundreds of healing foods to add to your meals that support the body's defense systems.
Listen as Dr. Li joins Dr. Friedman to explain the science of healing and prevention, as well as the strategies for using food to actively transform health.
Stress puts our health at risk, damaging our body’s systems and contributing to irritability, anxiety, depression, headaches, insomnia, and a myriad of other diseases and ailments.
But, people can disarm the harmful effects of stress naturally and holistically. Dr. Bradley Nelson offers these six tips for beating the stress of daily life.
1. Control what is in you. Eat healthy, live whole foods. The shorter the time from tree to tasting, from ground to gourmet, the more positive energy you will receive.
2. Control what is around you. Stay away from chronically toxic people and situations. Stay off of negative social media.
3. Eliminate clutter, physical and spiritual. Clean lines and open spaces in your living area can provide calmness and serenity. Purge yourself of emotional clutter like trapped emotions.
4. Literally “ground” yourself. This concept is also known as “earthing.” You know that great feeling you have after a day at the beach? That is about more than a day of relaxation. Standing or walking in bare feet in grass, sand, or even on a concrete surface that is immediately above the soil can rid your body of ever-so-damaging negative energy.
5. Embrace joy. As they say, “laughter is the best medicine.” Share random hugs and smiles. Think about all you have to be grateful for and share that gratitude. Keep negative energy at bay with positive thoughts and acts.
6. Slow down and love the little things. Humans have adopted the rat race as a way of life, and it need not be that way. There is nothing and no one more important than YOU. Make sure you have sufficient alone time and use it to enjoy what makes you content. A walk in the woods, smelling fresh-cut grass, watching children play, a day of reading... The possibilities are endless.

Should we follow a Paleo diet and eat like a caveman or go with a plant-based diet and eat like a gorilla? Should we starve ourselves on the latest intermittent fasting diet, or go on a ketogenic diet and eat a lot of fats and low carbs? What about grains? Are they good for us, or a leading cause of disease? Do eggs cause high cholesterol or lower it? All this confusion is enough to make your head spin!

Counting calories makes you gain weight.
Salt (the right kind) isn’t bad for you. In fact, it reduces heart disease, lowers blood pressure and aids in weight loss.

The words connection, friendship, and laughter probably don't describe the relationship you have with your doctor. The words connection, friendship, and laughter probably don't describe the relationship you have with your doctor. A recent Gallup poll found that most people feel dismissed or ignored by their doctors. They just don't have the time or interest in getting to know their patients.
Then there are the excessive costs, which leave many unable to get the healthcare they need. But our guest today has spent his entire medical career putting into practice the idea that healing should be a loving human connection, not a business transaction. Dr. Patch Adams graduated from the Medical College of Virginia in 1971. As a young woman, Dr. Wentz was diagnosed with Hashimoto's disease, which affects the thyroid gland and causes the body to attack its own cells.
She is not alone. More than 35 million Americans currently suffer from Hashimoto’s—making it the country’s fastest-growing autoimmune disease. Many individuals with or without a formal diagnosis suffer daily symptoms, including chronic cough, acid reflux, irritable bowel syndrome, allergies, persistent pain, hair loss, brain fog, and forgetfulness.
Unfortunately, many people do go undiagnosed (or misdiagnosed), compounding the symptoms and leading to the destruction of the thyroid gland.

Listen as Dr. Wentz joins Dr. Friedman in this encore episode from April 2019 to discuss the damage Hashimoto's can do to one's body--and how you can use nutrition to mitigate the illness.

David Medansky knows this struggle all too well. He was told by his doctor if he didn't lose weight, he had a 95% chance of having a heart attack.
He tried several traditional diets, shakes, supplements, and exercise programs. Thinking outside the box, David discovered the blueprints to achieving permanent weight loss. He not only shed 50 pounds but has kept it off. He's now on a mission to help others attain permanent weight loss.

Dr. Friedman exposes hidden chemicals that may be sabotaging your weight loss goals and he shares what you can do about it.Are you having a hard time losing weight no matter what diet you try?

Jay is speaking publicly about his high LDL cholesterol.Every 40 seconds someone in the U.S. has a heart attack or stroke.
Lowering your LDL cholesterol (the "bad" cholesterol) is considered the most modifiable risk factor. However, many people do not understand the connection between having high levels of “bad” cholesterol and their risk of cardiovascular disease. With cholesterol, there’s no warning sign. You don’t feel it, but it could lead to a heart attack and hit you out of nowhere.
Jay Leno has teamed up with Amgen on Cholesterol 911, a national campaign that is aiming to raise awareness of and sound the alarm on high LDL-C, also known as “bad” cholesterol, and its link to heart attack and stroke.
Jay is speaking publicly about his high LDL and urging patients with high bad cholesterol who are at increased risk for a heart attack or stroke to see the emergency in high bad cholesterol and to visit Cholesterol911.com to learn more about their risks and how to talk to their doctor about new treatment options.

Dr. Friedman debunks common fish myths. For decades, health experts and doctors have warned us about the dangers of getting mercury contamination from eating fish. In fact, the FDA warns pregnant women to limit fish consumption, because the mercury could be dangerous to the unborn child.
The FDA doesn't warn the public of the possible dangers of any other food -- just fish.

In this encore episode from August 2019, he debunks these fish myths and shares why wild-caught fish is the healthiest food you should be eating.
There’s a dark side of the wine industry. The health benefits of wine seem to be endless.
Research shows wine helps reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease, lowers cholesterol, reduces the risk of cancer, and may even extend your lifespan. Having a glass or two of wine each day has even been recommended by the American Heart Association.
But, unfortunately, there’s a dark side of the industry.
Thanks to a lack of regulation on labeling, most wine sold in the U.S contains massive amounts of hidden colorants, pesticide residue, toxins, and excessive sugar. To say these additives are unhealthy is an understatement.
A recent analysis found 100% of all wines tested in California contained high levels of glyphosate, the main ingredient in Roundup, the cancer-causing herbicide produced by Monsanto.
Todd White, founder of Dry Farm Wines, joins Dr. Friedman to share the dirty truth about wine, from irrigation to fermentation. He’ll also discuss how you can choose healthy, organic wine so you get all the wonderful health benefits without any hidden chemical additives. High cholesterol is a critical conversation to have, with more than 100 million Americans affected."If I can inspire people to talk to their doctor about their statin, that’s better than getting a laugh.” --Howie Mandel
That statement is on the home page of the "Take Cholesterol to Heart" webpage, an organization Howie Mandel has partnered with to raise awareness about high cholesterol and the treatment options available.
It's a critical conversation to have, with more than 100 million Americans affected.
Howie himself was diagnosed with high cholesterol in his late 30s, but at the time he really didn't realize the importance of the words coming out of his doctor's mouth since he felt generally "healthy." He was prescribed a statin, which he took initially but then quit taking after experiencing some undesirable muscle pain as a side effect.
A year later at his doctor's visit, his cholesterol was through the roof. He then began to really listen, now understanding that his time bomb was ticking.
Howie joins Dr. Friedman in this encore episode from May 2019 to discuss how dangerous high cholesterol can be, why there's not just one statin, and the importance of talking to your doctor about cholesterol and medication options.

With so much confusion and conflicting information on what we should and shouldn't be eating, it can be quite overwhelming. With so much confusion and conflicting information on what we should and shouldn't be eating, it can be quite overwhelming. We have with us, Dr. Robert Lustig here today to help us set the record straight as a leading expert on metabolic health and nutrition.
He's on a mission to expose all the misinformation regarding food and diet-related disease. He believes if we don't fix our food and change the way we eat, chronic diseases will prevail. We will bankrupt their healthcare and threaten the future of our planet.
Dr. Robert Lustig is a neuroendocrinologist with expertise in metabolism, obesity, and nutrition. He holds a bachelor's in science, from MIT, a doctorate in medicine from Cornell University, and a master of studies and law from UC Hastings College of Law, and is an emeritus professor of pediatrics in the division of endocrinology.
In addition, he's the chief science officer for the non-profit Eat Real. He's authored several popular books, including Fat Chance, and The Hacking of the American Mind: The Science Behind the Corporate Takeover of Our Bodies and Brains, and the just-released Metabolical: The Lure and the Lies of Processed Food, Nutrition, and Modern Medicine.
Dr. Friedman weighs in on an important topic: What's in your water? If you’re constantly struggling with your weight no matter what diet or exercise regimen you try, the water you're drinking could be to blame.
Chemicals called “endocrine disrupters” commonly found in tap water and bottled water can wreak havoc on your hormones, increase your appetite and cause fat cells in your body to expand. In addition, there could be toxins in your drinking water that have been linked to gut issues, food intolerance, autoimmune disease, and cancer.
In the early 1990s, a legal clerk named Erin Brockovich received national media attention when she exposed chromium 6 in the drinking water of Hinkley, California. This contaminated water caused liver damage, reproductive problems, birth defects, and cancer! Julia Roberts won an Academy Award for her portrayal of Erin Brockovich in the critically acclaimed film. Even with the international press coverage of the water contamination and lawsuit settlement ($333 million,) the problem hasn’t gone away. In fact, it’s gotten worse! Chromium 6 has been detected in the homes of 200 million people in all 50 states.
Americans spend close to 17 billion dollars a year on bottled water believing it’s a healthier option. Actually, the federal government places more purity, testing, and quality control standards on tap water than on bottled water.
Capital One coined the phrase “What’s in your wallet?” In this revealing episode from January 2019, Dr. David Friedman answers the question, “What’s in your water?” He also shares which water filters are the most effective and the healthiest choice when choosing bottled water.

Your liver is actually the key to a healthy metabolism. The path to becoming naturally thin isn't as impossible as it may seem.
The hidden truth is that your liver is actually the key to a healthy metabolism. When it isn't functioning properly, it loses the ability to burn fuel. An overloaded liver can only store fuel as fat, which slows your metabolism and leads to excess weight gain.
Even if you cut out sugar and carbs, you can still struggle with weight loss and high blood sugar.
In Dr. Alan Christianson's book, The Metabolism Reset Diet, he provides readers the information they need to reverse damage to the liver in just four weeks. Once your liver regains its ability to manage your metabolism, you'll have fewer food cravings, steady energy levels, better digestion, and a metabolism that works optimally.
Listen in this episode from April 2019 as Dr. Christianson joins Dr. Friedman to explain why liver health is so tied to metabolism, as well as how you can achieve optimal liver function to lose weight and get healthy fast.

If we allow ourselves to become germaphobes, this will lower our immune system and increase our risk of getting sick. Germs are our friends. We need them.Widespread fear of getting the coronavirus has made self-serve salad bars and all-you-can-eat buffets a thing of the past! In fact, the country’s leading buffet restaurant chain, Golden Corral is changing its format and removing its self-serve buffets. Many Las Vegas casinos have seen their final buffet days and so have cruise-lines. All this comes from a fear of touching utensils that others have touched. Considering people touch their cell phones (contaminated with 17,000 germs, including E. coli) and doorknobs, menus, elevator buttons, and armrests that thousands of people have touched, where do we draw the line?
Dr. Anthony Fauci, a key member of the government’s coronavirus task force, recently announced that he recommends people should never shake hands again! Even when the pandemic is over, he says we should permanently cease handshaking and giving our friends a high five.
If we allow ourselves to become germaphobes, this will lower our immune system and increase our risk of getting sick. Germs are our friends. We need them. In this eye-opening episode, Dr. Friedman shares why in this episode from July 2020.

Are you having a hard time losing weight no matter what diet you try?
Research shows chemicals in food, the cookware used to prepare it, and even the containers we store our food in may be the cause of the growing obesity epidemic. Learn the secrets behind individuals who live the longest, healthiest, happiest lives.Award-winning journalist Dan Buettner has spent years uncovering the secrets behind longevity.
His work revealed five places around the world – dubbed Blue Zones – where people live the longest, healthiest, happiest lives.
Diet plays a significant role. A nutritional regimen based on a plant-based diet (high amounts of complex carbohydrates, medium amounts of protein, and medium amounts of fat) rose to the top as commonalities among these areas.
Specifically, the following are key components:
whole grains
greens
nuts
cooked beans (which is the cornerstone of all areas)
Individuals in Blue Zone hot spots also drink moderate amounts of wine and regularly drink coffee and tea.
Another life factor Dan researched was happiness and the characteristics that accompany a fulfilled, happy existence.

Although eliminating wheat and dairy from your diet may help ease your symptoms, it is a temporary solution.
In his book, Eat Wheat, Dr. John Douillard, a former NBA nutrition expert and creator of LifeSpa.com, addresses the underlying cause of the gluten-free epidemic.
Dr. Douillard explains that after 3.4 million years of eating wheat and only 500,000 years of hunting meat, humans are actually genetically better equipped to eat wheat than meat.
He also discusses how a breakdown in digestion has damaged the intestinal wall and leaked undigested foods and environmental toxins into the body’s lymphatic system, causing “grain brain” symptoms and food allergies.
Although eliminating wheat and dairy from your diet may help your symptoms, it is a temporary solution. Eat Wheat addresses the root cause: the inability to digest well and break down harmful pollutants and toxins that can lead to more serious health concerns.
Listenas Dr. Douillard joins Dr. Friedman to share his research and why you might be able to add wheat back into your diet.
