Humility, of all the Eight Virtues, is the most difficult to really understand.Subscribe on Zencastr | Subscribe on iTunes | Subscribe on Google Play | Subscribe on Spotify | Subscribe on TuneIn | Subscribe on Stitcher
Podcast TopicThe virtue of Humility, in Ultima lore and in real life, is one of the more difficult virtues to describe. In fact, it is often easier to analyze by looking at what it is not, rather than at what it is.
Saint Josemaria Escriva, in life a Catholic priest, was a philosopher who mused quite a lot on the concept of Humility, and in one of his “Furrows” (writings), he put forth a list of signs of a lack of humility. The seventeen points on this list will form the basis of this Byte-Sized Virtue season; if all goes well, we’ll handle one a week, but if need be we’ll consider multiple signs in a single episode.
This week offers a look at the sixth and seventh signs (we’ll come back to the fifth later): “Not being aware that all the gifts and qualities you have are on loan,” and “not acknowledging that you are unworthy of all honour or esteem, even the ground you are treading on or the things you own.”

Podcast Topic(s) Oh my gosh, yes! We’re still alive! Though not really the planned topic — well, not WtF Dragon’s planned topic — much of the discussion in this episode surrounds the recent controversies and allegations that have been leveled at Activision-Blizzard and many current/former employees thereof.
We also discuss Genshin Impact and a few other games. It was kind of a weird episode, not terribly focused...and the recording bot was having issues.

Comic book artist, video game writer, and author Wes Locher recently published a new book: Braving Britannia: Tales of Life, Love, and Adventure in Ultima Online. It's a collection of stories about (what else?) the experience of different Ultima Online players and developers throughout the various eras of the game, and was something of a passion project for Wes.

Ultima IX: Redemption was, during the years it was in development, one of the most ambitious Ultima fan projects going; news from its developers (who came to be known as the Titans of Ether) was always greeted with excitement, and every new glimpse we got of their progress in remaking Ultima 9 suggested that we were in for an epic experience....whenever the mod was released, that is. But ultimately, Redemption did fold; it was cancelled, and its team instead opted to put their talents to use creating a new game.
So, in this episode, Chlorthos Dragon joins us again to discuss the storied, troubled development and cancellation of the project he helped found.

Video games, especially those set in fantasy realms — and, occasionally, in a science fiction context, although this seems to be less of a thing in that genre — occasionally feature a made-up language which is spoken (or otherwise utilized) by the NPC populace thereof. In this episode, then, we take a look at some of the different languages that have been developed for use in video games, from simple substitution ciphers to actual languages that have their own glossary, syntax, and grammar.

Linguistic Dragon and WtF Dragon discuss abstraction, and its importance to game design and the RPG experience. Because there is quite a gulf of difference between the actual, raw, terrifying experience of being lost in a hostile wilderness and finding one's way through it, and the rather more pleasant and fun-filled experience of navigating one's way through a game's open world whilst having to occasionally deal with the intrusion of a hunger mechanic.

From a discussion of Jordan B. Peterson's musings on the importance of narrative and mythos as a foundational aspect of societies, to Hans Urs von Balthasar's musings on beauty, goodness, and truth, this is a wide-ranging discussion that attempts, ultimately, to examine one thing in particular: the perhaps unique staying power of the Ultima fandom, even though it has been just shy of two decades since the last single-player Ultima title was published.

This discussion began with the observation that, having surpassed $6 billion in sales, Rockstar Games' Grand Theft Auto 5 has not only out-grossed Peter Jackson's The Lord of the Rings film franchise, but is also (apparently) the single most successful entertainment title in history (across all media forms). That may or not be true once you factor in some inflation-adjusted revenues for older games, but even so: it's still both impressive, and also mind-boggling.

Humility, as defined within Ultima lore, is "about perceiving one's place in the world, not according to one's own accomplishments, but according to the intrinsic value of all individuals. It is the recognition of the worthiness of all beings, and the perception of one's own place among them, regardless of one's own personal accomplishments or mistakes in the world." Which is a bit of a longer way of saying what St. Teresa of Ávila had to say about humility: that it is "living in the truth."

While I had initially thought that I would bring this series of Byte-Sized Virtue episodes to a close at Christmas, it only took a bit of reflection to realize that there was a particularly strong point to be made — especially about a virtue such as Justice — by continuing on to what is called Epiphany in the Catholic liturgical calendar. This feast day is officially observed on January 6th, although most North American par

I've been writing — and now recording — meditations on the Eight Virtues of Ultima lore for a few years now, and occasionally the question comes up: why do this?
It's a good question. I've been running what amounts to a major online Ultima fan hub since 2008 or so, and I've been running Ultima-related websites since 2004. That's a long time; not as long as some in the Ultima fandom have maintained sites, perhaps, but it amounts to a th

When I first set upon the idea of discussing the Virtue of Justice during Advent, and over the Christmas season, a few people expressed doubts about how I would be able to really tie the virtue in with Christmas proper. At least on the surface of it, the connection doesn't seem obvious. I mean, we catch the occasional glimpse of the concept in e.g. the lyrics of Christmas carols (e.g. “Hark the herald angels sing glory to the newborn King. Peace on Earth, and mercy mild; God and sinners reconciled.”), but for the most part the idea of Justice isn't the first — or even the third —

If you've followed the news surrounding the controversies that have erupted in the video games press (and in the industry in general) over the last couple of years, you've probably encountered the term social justice (or the pejorative term social justice warrior, sometimes shortened to SJW) at some point. You've probably also encountered the concept of social justice if you've been involved with the mainline Christian churches since at least the year 2000. The idea of social justice — society's obligation to provide the conditions that allow associations or individuals

Previously, we established the premise that Justice is giving right operation to others (or, if you prefer, giving to each person what is their legitimate due), that rights are the object of Justice, and that (in keeping with the understanding that Justice flows outward unto a multitude) we should understand rights as being things had by others, rather than simply considering them as things which we possess ourselves.
This isn't — or shouldn't — be a particularly novel notion, and it isn't something that I invented out of whole cloth for the sake of making a point. This view of what Justice i

It being Advent, I find myself moved once more to muse upon matters philosophical, examining the Eight Virtues of the Ultima series and comparing these against real-world philosophy and theology. This year, I'd like to focus on the Virtue of Justice, which I don't think I've given much attention to in years past.
