In this second of a four-part series on bluffing, we discuss 3-bet bluffing pre-flop. Similiarly to our previous episode, this is almost a misnomer because we don't advocate playing absolute trash, and certainly not pre-flop. Instead, we focus the conversation on how people tend to not 3-bet enough and when, where, and why to expand your 3-bet ranges.

We know everyone says it: Focus on process and not results. Truth is that this applies not just to poker but to life. Making the best decisions can improve your chances of success but not guarantee it. Here, we offer solutions and tools to help you focus on your processes on-the-felt.

Sometimes, we get in our own way and are our biggest impediment to growth. But we can get out of our own way by choosing different responses given what we know about pruning unused mental circuits (stop bad habits) and the neuroplasticity of re-wiring the brain (cultivate better habits). We can choose to be curious and choose a path that fosters our growth.

Do you know what hands YOU should play given your various circumstances? Figure this out, and you'll be on more solid footing than 90% of your field. Anyone can get generic range charts online, but they are static and not built with YOU in mind. Dell and BJ lay out a simple framework and pose questions you need to answer to figure out what your personal, inscrutable, well-constructed range looks like.

The third and final installment of discussions surrounding bet sizing on the flop. We talk about the competing forces at play that will make you want to bet smaller or larger depending on pre-flop aggression, what the flop looks like, what your opponents behave like, and more. While the math is easy, the fact that we’re playing against humans muddies the waters.

Listen to the end to hear one set of exercises you must perform if you’re going to seriously up-level your game.

Given feedback they received from Matt Berkey at Solve for Why, Dell and BJ learned some valuable insights and dive deeper into multi-way pots, discuss how over-realizing your equity is not the same as maximizing your EV, and talk about the Yin and Yang of Minimum Defense Frequency and Auto-Profit. They also introduce a framework of bet sizing, which they'll expound on in later episodes.

We told you this rabbit hole was a deep one.

Do you think you can make money playing poker? How much ya wanna bet?

No, really. How much do you want to bet?

In the first of a multi-part series, Dell and BJ talk about bet sizing pre-flop. Previous episodes talked about why to bet and when to bet, but now Dell and BJ get to the tricky issue of addressing how. The overarching goal of betting is to maximize your EV, but how exactly do you do that? It's not as simple as you might think.

Scrooge McDuck taught us in the '90s cartoon Ducktales to work smarter, not harder - but what parts of your game and life should you work on? The Pareto Principle, or the 80/20 Rule, stipulates that: * 80% of problems are from 20% of causes * 80% of sales are from 20% of clients * 80% of your poker success likely comes from the top 20% of contributing factors We talk about the Eisenhower Matrix as a way of identifying and prioritizing work that is important and urgent. We also give a shout out to Matt Vaughan in our episode about coaching - check that out at https://anchor.fm/theblindstealingtheblinds/episodes/Conversations-about-Coaching-with-Matt-Vaughan-e13har5 Finally, we talk about using Journaling as a way of focusing on those few things that happened to you today that gave you 80% of your daily joy.

Have you ever thought of going pro but didn't know if you had what it takes to get there? G.I. Joe taught us in the '80s that knowing is half the battle, but what's that other half? A strong reason why, discipline, and bankroll management, to start. Dell and BJ have two guests on the show to discuss this topic. SeaBass Drolet-Poitras (superdroll@hotmail.com), a professional poker player in Montreal, and Dan Mergl, a consistently profitable player who chooses not to go pro.

To bet, or not to bet, that is the question:

Whether 'tis nobler in the mind to suffer

The slings and arrows of outrageous variance,

Or to take well-constructed ranges against a sea of laggy fish

And by opposing end them.

Shakespeare knew long ago what hand classes warrant either equity realization or denial strategies - and now so can you! In modern English, even!

Dell and BJ unpack when to bet based on whether your hand has value, needs protection, has thin-value, or just wants to get to showdown cheaply. This is the second in a series of podcasts on betting.

Perhaps the most existential question in the history of the world is the one asked by toddlers so often it drives parents insane: Why? For example:

Why does it rain? (Because flowers get thirsty.)

Why can't I have ice cream and cake for breakfast? (Because you need vitamins and minerals to grow big and strong.)

Why would I bet this flop? (Because it strongly favors your range as the pre-flop aggressor, and you want your opponent to stay in with a wide, uncapped range.)

In this episode, Dell and BJ discuss the problems of betting (people don't know why they're betting or not), and some solutions and tools to help figure out your incentives, including a small not-quite-tangent on the difference of auto-play vs. constructed defaults.

The science is clear: People are generally terrible at assessing risk and acting accordingly. Our ancestors conditioned us to be risk-averse when a rustle in the shrubs could be either the wind or a tiger ready to eat us. Dell and BJ describe a risk management framework used in business that, when applied to the poker table, can help you better maximize your gains and minimize your losses.

People approach pre- and post-flop play like they're two distinct games. In fact, they are just parts of a whole that tells a cohesive and consistent story through several chapters: pre-flop, flop, turn, and river. Dell and BJ discuss how five elements of a good story - Plot, Setting, Characters, Point of View, and Theme - relate to a poker hand.
