Baked-in advertising refers to adverts that are part of the original audio, and are either included in the conversation or are just part of the audio file. Dynamic ad insertion refers to ads that are added in during editing and the benefit of this lies in the flexibility it affords podcasters. If your contract is up with certain advertisers, you can simply replace their ad with a new one without having to record anything again. Tune in to hear more!

Without a crystal ball, it’s hard to know how successful your podcast will be. What it really comes down to is your idea of success, and how committed you are to creating that success. You first need to understand whether or not you want it to be your side-hustle or a full-time gig. The recipe for success is proper execution, dedication, and patience. Apple Podcasts hit 50 billion downloads in 2018 alone, and that number is sure to be significantly higher today. A growing player in the space is Spotify which spent a whopping $600 million acquiring the Joe Rogan Experience, This American Life, and shows by Kim Kardashian and the Obamas. Video can build a closer and more intimate relationship with your audience. It’s great to put a face to the voice, and that familiarity will build trust and loyalty. Mics: they’re not all the same. The main difference is dynamic and condenser, with the former being older tech. Soundwaves move its diaphragm which moves a metal coil that bobs up and down to capture an AC current identical to a soundwave. They’re great for recording loud sounds, but can have a tough time picking up quieter sounds. Condenser mics are recommended for in-studio recording and they’re awesome for recording quieter, more complex sounds. Soundwaves hit the condenser diaphragm with vibrations converted into electric current. Sound good? Of course it does.

One word: practice. Talking to yourself in front of a mic can feel pretty uncomfortable to do. Our host Andrew Delmar is 27 episodes deep and he still doesn’t feel natural doing this, but he understands that all hosts go through this, and the best way to overcome it is to practice over and over. There are still some things that’ll help take some of the pressure off, like post-production editing. Scripts and loose outlines can also really help relax you. Do whatever you need to do to take the edge off.

Wearing headphones while recording your podcast might seem counterintuitive, right? Wrong. It’s actually the only way to get an accurate, real-time review of your voice while recording. It might sound cringey, because the voice we hear is different from the voice those around us can hear; as discussed in a previous episode about hating the sound of your own voice. Headphones give you a truer version of how you sound, and the ability to make real-time adjustments to volume, popping Ps, and background noise.

But not all podcasts need huge time investments when it comes to editing. How much time you spend editing is influenced by preference, personal style, and subject matter. Why we don’t like the sound of our voice comes down to a mismatch of expectations of hearing our voice when we speak, and how we actually sound. The sound we hear is determined by sound waves passing through the air and our cheekbones. Our cheeks bones produce a lower frequency than the air, which is why the two can sound so different from each other. The more you hear yourself, the less cringe it should be, so keep chatting and keep listening!

Pop filters clean up the sound before you even edit it. They protect your mic from popping sounds, or rather, fast-moving air called plosives. Plosives are created from popping Ps when speaking close to your mic. Pop filters come in a variety of forms and are typically nylon or metal mesh screens that sit between you and the mic. Foam windscreens also slide on the mic itself and are great for omnidirectional recording.

RSS stands for Really Simple Syndication and is basically an ugly text file called an XML file. This is what your computer’s RSS reader looks for to find real-time updates. That might sound confusing, but it’s simple and really helpful. Rather than scratching around for the latest content, RSS feeds it directly to you, which saves you time and sieves out the content you’re not looking for.

You can definitely podcast as a side gig! The best part is that you have a few options, too. The first is to build an audience for something else that you’re working on, so you can provide existing clients with even more content that will hopefully lead to conversions. One more option is to podcast for your hobby. Check out online forums for cool topics you can cover, and be inspired by the success stories of others. Go on, give it a go!

The much-disputed question of the first podcast, depends on your definitions. The roots of the medium can be found when radio media made its way onto the internet in 2003, and when this combined with the invention of the RSS feed, we see the shaping of the format we know today. It is believed that the first-ever podcast appeared on Chris Lydon's blog, although it was not until a little while later that it would actually be known as a 'podcast', when the words iPod and webcast were combined by Ben Hammersley. Podcasting has been growing healthily over the last decade or so, but asking exactly what a podcast is, still seems to be a relevant question. To put it simply, a podcast is on-demand audio, available in episode format. One of the reasons for the popularity of podcasts is the simplicity of accessing them; all you need is an internet connection. This convenience has lent itself to the wide range of ways that podcasts are consumed; common practices include on a commute while exercising, or performing domestic chores. The ability to subscribe to a show and receive the latest episodes upon release has contributed to engaged listenership, but it is also very common to tune in for once-off episodes at random times. As one of the fastest-growing mediums, with projections predicting this trend accelerating, podcasting is an exciting space to engage with and to take part in, so don't be shy!
