We spoke to Tor at Roundhouse about their commitment to young trusteeship. Not only do Roundhouse have young trustees, but they've created an guide to help other organisations do the same.
Tor chatted to us about why young people were so important to their organisation, what the benefits have been from working inclusively and her tips for doing the same.
*"At the Roundhouse, we believe that listening to young people is only the starting point. Then you need to take them seriously. This applies right up to the top of the organisation. Put simply, your board of trustees should be representative of the people you serve, and for us, that’s young people.
We believe that any cultural organisation that wishes to shake things up, foster progressive attitudes and remain relevant must include young people in its decision making progress."*
If young people don't know what trustees are, how can they apply for the role? Mita chatted to Angus Roy, Charity Director at Ecclesiastical, to find out his thoughts on this and his ideas for solving this problem!
Ecclesiastical are a specialist insurance and financial services company with over 130 years of experience offering honest advice, deep expertise and caring protection. They are charitably owned. They exist to contribute to the greater good of society and we do this by managing a successful, ethically-run portfolio of businesses.
Ecclesiastical found that charities they worked with were struggling to find trustees and that diversity on trustee boards was an issue. Working with Getting on Board, they conducted a survey with over 500 young people and found that 48% want to make a difference, but the vast majority don't know what trustees were.

Mita Desai chats with Alex Swallow about how he became involved in the Young Trustees Movement and why he thinks it's such an important issue.
Alex is The Influence Expert, helping people with their personal branding and influence- and is the author of the book ‘How To Become An Influencer’ (http://theinfluenceexpert.com/).
He set up Young Charity Trustees in 2011 and ran it until it became part of The Young Trustees Movement in 2019. After becoming a young trustee himself he realised how few young people know about this amazing opportunity to give something back, so he started to campaign on the issue. He has been involved in a number of national and international level governance initiatives. He served as the Co-Vice Chair of a charity in North London and is now the Chair of The Suit Works in his new home of Sheffield. He remains a committed supporter for the cause of trying to make charity Boards more diverse.
