  • Hear clients and having clients feel heard
  • If we don’t hear them it’s impossible to help them gain clarity
  • Not hear for our sake as a coach, but to help the client hear themselves
  • Difference between old competency “active listening” and new
    • New focuses on the verb
    • Speaks to the “being and the doing” of the coach
    • Part of what we give is listening – with all senses
  • Listening "to the whole person" -- what the client is saying, not saying, etc.
  • What is the coach noticing and observing, and how are they reflecting it back to the client?
    • When the words of a client may not align with their tone, body language, expressions, etc.
  • Crafting questions based on the observations of your listening e.g. “I’m noticing…"

Questions:

  • How do you help your client hear themselves?
  • What ways do you make your clients feel heard?
  • How do you exist or “be” a coach?
  • What does active listening mean to you now?
  • How do your clients respond to what you share?
  • Can you think of a time when you were not actively listening?
  • What ways do you listen to the whole client? E.g. body, non-verbals, context
  • How do you listen from the client’s perspective? (empathetic listening)
  • What do you notice or observe with clients? (to disrupt a client’s thinking)
  • What ways do you take pause to listen better?

On this episode of @CoachingThruIt, coaches Laura and Julie talk about empowering their clients to design and develop individual systems of accountability. We talk about coaching questions to hold clients accountable and practices that enable clients to check-in with themselves for their own action steps beyond a coaching session.

Question for coaching accountability:

  • By the end of our time today, what would you like to have us achieve?
  • What would you want to discover in this session that would be useful for you?
  • How could we quantify this or make this measurable?
  • What can I help you with between now and the next time we talk?
  • What are you going to do next?
  • What changes are you making from what you’ve learned today?
  • What would have allowed you to take action?
  • What can help you move forward?
  • What was holding you back?
  • What prevented you from taking the next step?
  • What did you learn from not doing?
  • What are the small steps to get there?

Lessons Learned:

  1. Accountability is unique to each client -- let them decide next steps
  2. Give your clients the questions you asked where they said “I don’t know.”
  3. Offer the recordings for clients to listen back
  4. Your success as a coach does not depend on your client’s accountability or follow-through
  5. Bottom line: Encourage your clients to show up to do the work with you, the coach. That is what it is all about!

In this episode of @CoachingThruIt, Julie & Laura were thrilled to have a coaching conversation with Isabeau Iqbal. She is a career and life coach who helps ambitious perfectionists move forward in their higher education career, without throwing their quality of life out the window. Isabeau takes a positive approach to perfectionism in her coaching -- this, she believes, is a much more kind (and realistic) strategy than wishing one’s perfectionism away! We talk about the hurdles for starting a coaching practice and how to remove business barriers like scheduling, sales, and matching these to our values. This was a helpful conversation to understand that coaching as a business is an evolution and process -- so it’s okay if we’re still figuring it out and finding our voice in our practice. On this episode of @CoachingThruIt Laura and Julie do a walk-through of what powerful questions are and how they are used in coaching practice and as a skill in life.

“They help the coach and the client to seek understanding and find clarity around any issue, challenge, or topics that a client brings to the session.” Via Dr. Katie Linder https://www.higheredcoaches.com/

Elements of powerful questions:

  • They are short.
  • They often start with “what” and “how” stems.
  • They are open-ended.
  • They are non-judgmental.
  • They come from a place of curiosity.
  • They are focused on the client.
  • They are goal-oriented.
  • They are followed by silence.

Phrasing powerful questions around:

  • Past / Present / Future
  • Learn / Be / Do

In this episode of @CoachingThruIt, Julie and Laura talk about having coaching clients make distinctions, define terms, and get to the heart of the matter in a session. We chat a bit about “fillers” vs. blunt questions, and how we are thinking about defining terms and comparison when in our own coaching practice.

Tools we compare in this episode -- specifically to know the “how” and “what” certain words mean to them:

Making Distinctions - differentiating between two things; comparing two concepts or ideas.

e.g., leadership vs. being a leader; community vs. relationship

Defining Terms - how the client describes a concept, term, etc.; e.g., “What do you mean by that?” or “Tell me more about that…”

  • Removing the “barnacles” or fillers: the extra words, context, or “scratchy bit,” that might get in a way of your question; e.g. “Help me understand...” {insert question}
  • Do these context pieces or summarization direct/lead our clients?
  • Does empathy look different in a coaching relationship?
  • How much can our coaching clients take in with these questions?
  • Bottom line: Shut up, and just ask the direct question
  • Mirroring behavior: “Emotions are real!”
  • Setting the tone with coaching clients to bring them up/down/even
  • Bottom lining: when a client is giving too much context, etc. to redirect the client
  • Checking in with clients: Just to say “Hi, How are you?”
  • Peeling back the onion in the “murky middle” of a coaching session
  • Put on your “opportunity overalls” -- let’s get to work!
  • Self-reflection tool for making distinction
  • Do we not spend enough time thinking about words?

In this @CoachingThruIt episode, Julie and Laura chat about pivoting from advising, helping, and mentoring to not be a problem-solver. We unpack the phrase we are told in our coach training: “Coach the Client, Not the Problem.” We join our coaching clients on their journey -- so we talk about our triggers that might “helper” tendency, to listen to how we are thinking about coaching clients to empower them to reach their own answers and identify their own solutions.

  • The “How can I help?” question allows coaching clients to talk out needs & support
  • Avoid giving the hack or solution to the client
  • How much more powerful is the solution or direction if the client says it themself?
  • Allowing clients to talk out loud ideas, issues, and actualizations
  • Every coaching session “success” metric might look different or show up later
  • Allow for reflections & takeaways from the client at the end of each session
  • Change Talk: “What if …?” and “What would this look like?”
  • Motivational Interviewing (episode to come)
  • Removing Barnacles: get rid of the context and just ask the short and direct question.
    • “Just so I understand…” or “Out of curiosity…”
  • Powerful questions for family, friends or peers: “What would you do to solve this right now?” or “What do you want the outcome to be?” or “I have some ideas… but what do you think we should do first?”
  • Empowering others to solve their own problems

Coaching Presence:

  • Holding space: coaches are “team you” to sit with clients during the decision-making process and tough conversations around your goals/interests/ideas
  • “Sit on Your Hands” to allow for patience
  • Coach responses: “Hmmmm” or “Mmmmm” + head tilt or nod

On the podcast, Laura & Julie chat about the fishbowl coaching exercise and what it feels like to coach without an agenda!

  • Let the client lead; trust the client
  • Raw feelings/emotions: to dig in or not?
  • Time in practice coaching sessions

All The Feels

What happens if you recognize your coaching client needs to talk more about emotions rising or feelings coming up related to issues from the past -- we would refer out to therapy:

  • Referring a Client to Therapy (ICF) [PDF]
  • Coaching vs. Therapy - Referring Coaching Clients with Mental Illness

Visual representation of self as a coach via video conferencing:

  • How should we emote as a coach?
  • How do you keep your facial expressions neutral?
  • Top model style: Tongue to the roof of your mouth and shoulders back

Storytelling

“Not needing to hear story” [in coaching]

How does the story fit into or does not fit into coaching?

Story opens up the ideas, examples, and emotions related to the “How” and “what” questions.

Comparison of emotions or ideas from the past to now.

Is this information seeking for yourself OR helping a client make connections?

We don’t need the tea spilled in coaching.

What were we doing 3-5 years ago that got us to where we are today?

Great question for learning what time & perspective

Season 1 in Coach to Coach Podcast

Fishbowl Coaching: similar to fishbowl discussions you have 1 person observing and the other two practice being the coach and coaching client. Things we learned:

  • Nimble coaching: improv, just listen & ask powerful questions without an agenda
  • Sticking to an agenda: how does this impact getting deep with this structure?
  • Powerful questions: phrase questions how we would approach and ask these open-ended questions

Emotional Intelligence

Empathy: “I will take the train to vulnerable city any time.” ~ Julie “The open express.” ~Laura

  • Allyship
  • Openness
  • Affinity/Identity needs

What’s your story? (opening line or introduction)

Clearing -- ways to get the things out of their head & remove the distractions before moving into the coaching session

Asking the “HOW” and “WHAT” questions, and avoiding the “WHY” - we don’t need the information, context, history, etc.

We need to work on our best listening: facial expressions, verbal responses, non-verbals, and emotions -- maybe?

  • Leading as a coach through visual expressions or reactions (verbal) (Laura)
  • Be okay with the silence while thinking as a coach; breaking role (Julie)
    • BONUS ASK: What question should I be asking you now?

To work on for Agenda Setting/Structure in coaching:

  • Identify a topic or issue your coaching client wants to talk about
  • Why is this issue/topic significant?
  • What do you want to come from this coaching session
    • Agenda structure -- planning & returning to the agenda, or not?
    • Checking in on the agenda with the client to redirect or other things that come up
    • Timestamp to check in and review agenda
    • Organized conversations
    • Guidelines & bumpers do not need to restrictive
