At one point or another, almost every one of us has experienced difficulty talking to people, nervousness, and even the feeling that our mind has gone completely blank. We call this social anxiety.

Social anxiety can affect everybody at some point in their lives, usually during the teenage years while we’re still figuring things out. It’s completely normal. But while most people are able to eventually overcome their feelings of anxiousness and stress around others – especially in larger groups or among strangers – some people continue to suffer from these feelings well into adulthood and beyond. Eventually, we realise that this social anxiety is affecting our lives in a big way. This we call social anxiety disorder.

In this blog, we look at social anxiety disorder and how hypnotherapy can be used as an effective tool for helping us to deal with this debilitating challenge.

What is social anxiety disorder?Social anxiety – also sometimes referred to as social phobia – is a disorder experienced by people who feel a sense of fear around others. Ranging from mild feelings of discomfort to extreme panic and even physical symptoms, social anxiety can have a knock-on effect on people’s lives, affecting their friendships, family interactions, and work.

Social anxiety can often be mistaken for other mental health challenges and issues, leaving people feeling helpless and confused. Those who find meeting new people, talking to people, and attending social gatherings stressful and difficult can be said to suffer from social anxiety. These people often dread the thought of being judged or scrutinised by others, obsessing over how other people view them.

Feeling anxious around others? You’re not aloneIn Australia, around 3% of people are living with varying degrees of social anxiety at any moment, with around 11% of people having experienced it at one point or another during their lives. While that’s generally lower than many other countries, it’s still over three-quarters of a million people in Australia alone. This disorder can affect almost anyone and can present suddenly at any point in life or have been a part of that person’s experience since childhood.

While reported levels of social anxiety tend to decrease with age, this is due mainly to the fact that people have learned to live with the disorder or have discovered treatments – like hypnotherapy that work.

The many different causes of social anxiety disorderThe origins of social anxiety disorders are still being explored. However, they tend to run in families, passed on from generation to generation through genetics or learned behaviour. The part of the brain responsible for emotions like anger, sadness, and – importantly – fear is called the amygdala. It is believed that the stress caused by social anxiety originates here, especially among people with an overactive amygdala. Sometimes, external stimuli may trigger social fears, where people witness or experience traumatic or embarrassing events involving strangers or groups.

Symptoms & effectsSocial anxiety can present in many ways, some harder to spot than others. Here are some of the most common symptoms experienced by people suffering from social anxiety.

Physical Symptoms – like a fast heartbeat, blushing, muscle cramps, shaking, trembling, sweating, laboured breathing, and even nausea or vomiting.

Emotional Symptoms – fear that others may notice your discomfort, fear that you will embarrass yourself, fear that people are watching and scrutinising you and concern that you’ll be seen as weak or ‘weird’.

Individually, these symptoms are manageable, but with social anxiety disorder, they can present all at once, overwhelming the sufferer to a point where the condition affects most parts of their life and almost every social situation.

• Inability to interact with unfamiliar colleagues or strangers
• Avoiding attending parties or social gatherings
• Not going to work or school
• Difficulty in starting a conversation
• Trouble finding a partner (dating)
• Conflict with family members

At a high level, social anxiety disorder can have massive consequences on people’s day-to-day lives. From an acute inability to work well with others in the workplace to high levels of family bullying and intense feelings of loneliness, a social anxiety disorder can be incredibly damaging.

Medical and psychotherapy treatmentsOver the years, many treatments have been touted as effective for social anxiety disorder. Treatment options may include anxiety medications and intense psychotherapy. However, more recently, people are discovering more holistic approaches like anxiety management techniques, social skills training, and hypnotherapy. In truth, each case is different and requires a unique perspective and trained understanding of how social anxiety sufferers experience their own challenges. For this, we recommend you consider turning to hypnotherapy.

Benefits of Hypnotherapy for Social anxietyAside from the myriad other benefits of hypnotherapy, social anxiety disorder is among the most frequently and successfully managed conditions of the age-old practice. More often than not, clients are desperate for help, having already tried medication and psychotherapy.

Social anxiety disorder originates in the mind, and it is here where hypnotherapy can gain the access to the mind that clients need to overcome the debilitating effects of this difficult condition.

Live a more confident life – Turn to HypnocareAt Hypnocare, therapists are trained to create an environment of safety, trust and calm before gently exploring the root causes and issues that trigger and compound social anxiety. Through carefully curated breathing exercises, affirmations, and fear-busting techniques, hypnotherapy is an effective tool for addressing the most adverse elements of social anxiety.

I was a habitual worrier. If all was ok my mind would search for the next problem. I came out of my second session with Linda and this had disappeared. I felt light. I had a realisation that whatever my situation, I had a choice. It was highly liberating and has persevered. I ended up studying hypnosis and have a new respect for what Linda helped me achieve. She's genuine and down to earth. Thanks Linda *
  • Linda is a very experienced practitioner in the field. I feel very lucky to have had support from such a seasoned professional. Thank you for all you have done to help me progress Linda. It is much appreciated. *

    • It’s been 8 weeks smoke free and the idea of picking up a cigarette is so unappealing I now sometimes wonder how I was ever a smoker. My skin is better, I'm not carrying around guilt every day, I don't stink, I'm not as anxious, basically I'm so happy it's all behind me and count my lucky stars I don't have to live that smoker life anymore. I think I was really ready to quit this time, and can't thank Linda enough for helping me make that happen. I didn't know if I had the strength to quit for good, but the session we did reminded me just how strong I am. Thank you millions and millions Linda, that one afternoon in your chair has changed my life and helped me kick a habit I've struggled with for over 10 years. Thank you so very much 🙏🙏 * * * * *

In 2008 I visited Linda in her Subiaco clinic to treat a psychological tick involving constant jaw clenching/clicking (probably around 200 times per day - for years). After just 1 session it stopped dead immediately - 100%. It has now remained a forgotten habit for 9 years... had I not gone to her, I would have probably developed an arthritic jaw by now! * * * * *

Wow! There are no words that can really express my transformation after a few sessions with Linda. When I initially came to see Linda, I was suffering from anxiety and depression from a number of traumatic experiences I had been through in recent years. My anxiety and depression had started impacting my work, relationships and health. I averaged 2 HRS of sleep a night and sat on my couch every painfully stricken day, debilitated by everything that was going on. After my first session, I drove out of Linda’s office feeling light as a feather; I slept like a baby that night and signed up to a gym. By my 3rd session, I was comfortable with speaking to a group of people, I was sleeping regularly and had a huge motivation to go to the gym six days a week. Not only is my life on track, I am following my dreams. Things that I promised myself I would do one day, I am already doing. What stood out for me, was that Linda’s work taught my inner being to help myself, rather than rely on other people to help me find my way. Linda’s work not only instantaneously helped me, the effects of Linda’s work has unfolded over the last 3 months. Thank you Linda. You are truly a blessing. * * * * *

From hair-pulling to nervous scratching, grinding teeth to chewing lips, these behaviours (BFRBs) can manifest as intense, uncontrollable urges that can be very difficult to overcome. Nail-biting is among the most apparent, common, and maligned of the BFRBs, affecting as many as 1 in 20 people.

Nail-biting has been given a very negative rep – and with good cause. While some people twirl their hair, and others fiddle with jewellery to deal with stress and anxiety, nail-biting is seen as a heavily criticised habit, with many a parent chastising their child for chewing on their nails.

From age-old remedies involving painting the nails with foul-tasting adhesives to medical treatments that can do more harm than good, for generations, people have searched high and low for a solution to this problem without much success.

Recently, nail-biting has been examined and better understood with anxiety and stress as the identified culprits for this habit. Hypnotherapy is one of the most recognised treatments for stress, anxiety, and other disorders, capable of taking a holistic, non-medicinal approach to most things related to the everyday pressures on the mind, including the issues and challenges that can lead to persistent nail-biting.

What is Nail biting?Nail biting, also called onychophagia, often begins in childhood and, if left untreated, can continue well into adolescence and on to adulthood. Onychophagia isn’t considered terribly dangerous, but the habit can lead to a number of related problems and ailments if left unchecked.

The habit often begins during childhood and essentially involves the client chewing or gnawing on their nails to varying degrees. Nail-biting can range from mild to severe, and clients will often bite on their nails, unknowingly, until the keratin has been bitten back to the flesh beneath, sometimes leading to bleeding and significant pain.

The Negative Effects of this HabitBesides the visible physical damage that these actions can do to the body, the associated complexes, negative perceptions, and lingering stress they cause can be equally, if not more destructive. Often seen as a “disgusting” habit by those who have never been a victim of the compulsion, nail-biting can lead to a difficult cycle of anxiety triggering biting, internal negative reinforcement from others, and even more resulting stress. These are just a few of the damaging, risky, and often painful consequences of nail-biting:

  • Swelling and redness
  • Painful bleeding at the end of the finger
  • Infection from ingesting bacteria living under the nails
  • Self-Esteem problems
  • Anxiety caused by people judging you

Beyond the physical problems that nail- biting causes clients – especially children – are often judged and condemned for their habitual behaviour with many people offering little sympathy to those affected by the habit.

Hypnotherapy - From Chewed Up Nails to a Happier MindAs many as one in twenty people suffer from nail-biting and its associated disorders. Those lucky enough to be diagnosed as soon as the habit becomes a noticeable problem are usually able to find effective ways to manage it. For many others, however, finding a lasting treatment can be a tricky endeavour.

While there are many nail-biting, many are either untested or can be dangerous to the client. Hypnotherapy is an effective tool and treatment for such ailments as nail-biting and is great at getting to the root cause of the habit.

Instead of going after the habit itself, hypnotherapy is centred around addressing the associated causes of stress and anxiety and then treating the triggers of the problem. This holistic approach means that hypnotherapy treats far more than any singular issues causing problems like nail-biting, it addresses multiple elements of the mind.

Hypnocare – Taking Care of You… and Your NailsNail-biting is just one of the countless disorders that the therapists at Hypnocare are able to treat through the application of a variety of hypnotherapy treatments such as deep relaxation, affirmations and positive reinforcement. By tapping into the subconscious and addressing root anxieties, deep-seated fears, and life-long issues, therapists can leave clients feeling healthier, better, and happier, with nails that will thank you!

At Hypnocare, we are here to help you, and we’re happy to answer any questions or address any of your concerns before even committing to a session. So reach out to us and see for yourself, the power of hypnosis.

With anxiety among the most common of persisting mental health issues, often a non-medicated approach can help sufferers with panic and anxiety symptom alleviation. As the enduring COVID-19 pandemic pushes us deeper into a mental health crisis, we must acknowledge the complementary and alternative medicine options at our disposal. Hypnocare offers one such option, giving the people of Perth effective treatments in managing a range of mental health issues.

For centuries, hypnotherapy has proven to be an effective alternative to contemporary medication and modern psychotherapy. In making use of non-invasive techniques, therapists are able to induce a state of deep relaxation, allowing patients to tap into ordinarily inaccessible parts of the subconscious mind. Once in this state, various affirmations and suggestions of positive change are issued by the therapist to guide and change thought processes that are often the root cause of most anxiety issues.

Positive suggestions are focussed around helping a patient to cope with specific anxiety-related symptoms and overcome limiting behaviours. These positive statements and guidance slowly begin to permeate the subconscious, conditioning the patient’s mind and orienting their thinking and behaviour to reinforce and foster a mindset that combats anxiety problems. Once the hypnotherapist has instilled these positive messages, they will gradually guide the patient back into their normal state. Depending on the severity of the anxiety disorder at hand, sessions can vary significantly in both length and intensity.

As one of the most common persistent mental health disorders in Australia, anxiety brings with it a litany of associated problems. These may include panic attacks, endemic fear, and stress. The National Survey of Mental Health has estimated that almost half of Australia’s adult population will experience some sort of mental health disorder in their lifetime. Anxiety is the most prevalent of all the associated conditions, afflicting 1 in 7 of the population.

Western Australia, in particular, has not been spared the ravages of increasing levels of mental health challenges. With high incidences of substance abuse, in both Perth’s urban, and outlying areas, many people are ignoring the devastating effects of anxiety disorders, turning instead to things like alcohol, and drugs which ultimately amplify their problems, compounding an already difficult situation.

While many choose medicated solutions in staving off the debilitating symptoms of anxiety, they often find that side-effects, expense, and a lack of effectiveness only serve to compound the condition. Hypnotherapy can present a sustainable, informed answer to establishing the root cause of the patient’s problems and then treating them. Often touted as a go-to treatment that offers a more holistic approach to managing anxiety, hypnotherapy is proving to be effective in treating panic disorders, phobias, stress, and social anxiety issues.

Hypnotherapy – like any other treatment, both medical and holistic, is not necessarily a silver bullet cure for every instance of anxiety. While some cases have seen quick and lasting outcomes almost immediately, hypnotherapy can also take time and patience to make a sustainable difference in a clients life. Therapists are committed to discussing and engaging with their clients, developing a strong bond based on mutual trust and guidance. This is what makes hypnotherapy such an effective treatment – you cannot talk to a bottle of pills, but you can chat to a hypnotherapist.

Linda and Jan at Hypnocare Hypnosis Clinic are dedicated to offering the people of Perth a safe and effective alternative, in overcoming their struggles with anxiety. Hypnotherapy, with its many associated benefits, is fast becoming the choice of treatment for many dealing with bad habits, stress and mental health problems. By reaching out and seeking help, you can begin to return to a healthy and happy state of mind.
