Tony Nec was born and grew up in Malawi, a small country in southeast Africa, in 1957. As a teenager, he attended a school in England run by Catholic monks where he first experienced the power of Gregorian chant. While at university in the 1970s, he was inspired by Tibetan monks to participate in a structured meditation program, involving visualisation, mantra chanting and silence.In the mid-1980s he participated in various workshops and personal development courses, including mountaineering with the Outward Bound Trust and shiatsu with Elaine Liectie in Glasgow, Scotland.Between 1988 and 1981 he studied for a Diploma in Shiatsu and Oriental Medicine in Bristol, England with Keith Philips. He also holds a Certificate in Meta-Coaching from the International Society of Neuro-Semantics led by Michael Hall and a Diploma in Sacred Sound Therapy from the Colour of Sound Institute (now called The Sound Healing Academy) with Rachael Burnett.He has been involved with the Integral movement since 1995, following the work of Jean Gebser, Ken Wilber, Marilyn Schlitz and Jorge Ferrer, among others. In 2002, she coined the term “Cymatherapy” to refer to wave therapy based on the work of Dr. Peter Guy Manners, with whom she studied extensively. As a way of forwarding the field of vibrational medicine (specifically sound therapy), Ms. Cromwell founded (ISTA) the International Sound Therapy Association. Founded by Madhava Carrara and Margherita Cioffi, Grotta Sonora (“Sonorous Cave"), designs and constructs hand-crafted experimental musical instruments, drawing on their personal experimentation with sound, using different types of metals. Madhava is a musician, percussionist and artisan who was brought up in an environment strongly influenced by Indian culture. He has been experimenting for years with the craft of making stringed, wind and percussion musical instruments, using a wide range of materials, including recycled waste materials. With Margherita, singer and decorator, he started the exploration that is at the foundation of Grotta Sonora. Their first instruments were crafted in an Etruscan cave (“grotta”) close to Calcata Vecchia, a medieval village in the Treja Valley, north of Rome. The cave turned out to be the perfect place to play these newly crafted instruments, thus kicking off the Grotta Sonora project. Marla Leigh Goldstein is one of the few female professional frame drummers in the world today. Jens Zygar’s early experiences—living his first decade in Liberia, then moving to the North Sea coast of Germany to attend boarding school—have given him a multicultural perspective on musical language. He began his professional exploration of sound as a guitarist in the Hamburg-based new wave band Große Freiheit (Great Freedom). In the early 1980s, Swiss author and scientist Hans Cousto introduced him to the concept of the “cosmic octave,” inspiring him to develop “planetary gongs” that resonate with the frequencies, tones, and harmonics in nature. In the late 1980s, he cofounded the Stars Sounds Orchestra with keyboardist Steve Schroyder, combining the gongs with electronic sounds. Since 1995, Nestor Kornblum has explored and practiced the ancient art of overtone singing, or vocal harmonics, as a healing modality. He is one of a handful of Westerners to master overtone chanting employed by Tibetan monks and Tuvan (Mongolian) singers, which enables him to sing up to four simultaneous notes, with a range of five octaves. German-born Hildegard Westerkamp studied flute and piano at the Conservatory of Music in Freiberg before emigrating to Canada in her early twenties. After completing her music studies at the University of British Columbia, she joined the World Soundscape Project at Simon Fraser University under the direction of R. Murray Schafer. Her involvement with this project not only prompted deep concerns about the encroachment of noise and the general state of the acoustic environment, it also changed her thinking about music, listening, and soundmaking. The newly founded Vancouver Co-operative Radio provided an invaluable opportunity to learn about broadcasting and ultimately enabled her to produce and host her weekly program, Soundwalking, in 1978/79. Hildegard was a founding member of the World Forum for Acoustic Ecology, an international network of affiliated organizations and individuals who share a common concern for the state of the world’s soundscapes and has served over the years as a mentor for people pursuing careers in soundscape composition and acoustic ecology. Her own compositions, performed and broadcast in many parts of the world, engage with such aspects of the acoustic environment as urban, rural, and wilderness soundscapes; noise and silence; music and media sounds; human voices of all ages; and the sounds of different cultures. Sheila Whittaker is a sound healer and teacher with a background in classical music. She studied violin at the Royal College of Music and has had a career playing and teaching in the mainstream classical music world for many years. To use her musical abilities in a more focused, holistic way, she became a sound healer more than 20 years ago. During the last 15 years, she has specialized in using large high-quality gongs for her sound healing work. Sheila is a course tutor for the UK College of Sound Healing. She runs a gong practitioner training course for the college and also conducts other gong and sound healing workshops. Jack Kassewitz is president of Global Heart, Inc., a nonprofit organization that he cofounded in 2001 with his wife, Donna.
