We take a long look at the new National Climate Assessment put out by the US. We then turn to a live protest in Ottawa, talk about Ontario’s new ‘climate plan’ and end with an in-depth article reviewing the economics of Canada’s tarsands industry.

Peabody Energy is a massive coal company that recently filed for bankruptcy, and during these proceedings has revealed the monumental degree to which this company was funding public deception and political lobbying around science denial regarding climate change. The question is, was this a lone wolf? A bad actor? Or the norm.

We are in the middle of an unprecedented wave of global action on climate change, CNN is covering airport wait times. This week the team draws the lines from Christy Clark's comments on the need for more resource exploitation to the clear message being sent by grassroots organizations across the world saying that her future is not our future.
On this week's episode, we delve further into our series The Limits of Democracy, focusing specifically on Capitalism, and our system that increasingly seems to be based on a faulty belief in infinite resources. In the news, we look at the Fort McMurray wildfires, and why climate change is not part of the media coverage. Finally, we touch on the impending nomination of Donald Trump and the implications of his potential presidency.
The old saying goes that capitalism is the worst system out there... except for all others. Daryn this week makes a similar argument about Democracy itself, that while it aims for the best possible system to serve all citizens it has some really critical problems that lead to some of the systemic issues it attempts to solve. This is not to say that we should have something other than democracy... no-one on this show promote communism or tyranny. However the time has come to realize that our current model of democracy is designed to create it's own tyranny. The first part of a three part series, the limits of democracy episode takes a cold look at what are the limits of this system we've created, so that we can improve it in the future. Systemic problems require systemic change... all else is foolishness.

Dr. James Hansen, formerly of the NASA Space Goddard Institute and current author for open-access journal Atmospheric Chemistry and Physics released a bombshell report about some updated calculations regarding how long we have to bring carbon emissions under control, and the intensity of and speed of which we will experience the repercussions.
The main focus of the show is to talk about the intersection of veganism and climate activism. Over the last couple years, there has been a surge in folks calling themselves 'climate vegans', which should be a great thing (and can be) but unfortunately has led to almost as much 'bad blood' between the vegans and climate activists as it has created cooperation and positive change. In the last few shows, Stefan and Daryn made a few throw-away comments about this issue that were understandably misunderstood because we didn't explain why we felt that way, and what our position on veganism and the intersection with climate issues actually is.

Rich Penney, a volunteer with Zeitgeist Toronto joins us this week to talk about some of the most dangerous implications of runaway climate change. We felt it was important to circle back to this somewhat basic climate science because the face of denial has gone from Harper style 'it's not real/lets act like it's not' to Trudeau's 'it's real and we should do something, just not nearly as much as the science requires'. Just because someone says they accept climate change, doesn't mean that actually understand it nor does it mean they have any intention of actually doing what's required to stop it.
In the second section, Stefan and Daryn move the conversation south to the US primaries, the Supreme Court challenge to Obama's Climate Plan and then days later the death of notoriously conservative Supreme Court Judge Antonin Scalia... with less than a year to a presidential race and the implications for not just the USA but potentially a zero-sum win/loss scenario on climate change.

The Carbon XPRIZE is an attempt to engage innovators, designers and engineers of all types from all over the world to close the loop on carbon by creating technology and then hopefully a market for carbon (removed from the atmosphere or distilled out of fuel sources) to be used in physical objects and products. Examples might include things like concrete to both create a market for carbon as an input as well as incentivize carbon removal technologies by providing a profitable use for the results of the process. A game changer? Who knows just yet, but the possibilities are worth considering and something it would be foolish to ignore in a world drowning in carbon it doesn't want (in the air anyways).

First up this week, Ryan O'Connor author of "First Green Wave: Pollution Probe and the Origins of Environmental Activism in Ontario". Before there was Greenpeace, Environmental Defence, Ecojustice, Sierra Club or any other of the hundreds of large and small environmental organizations in Canada today there was Pollution Probe. Started by a few students and faculty at the University of Toronto back in 1969, Pollution Probe but environmental protection and activism on the map with a series of small and big wins protecting Canadians from burning rivers, toxic smokestacks and rampant litter. Ryan walks us through an outline of his book on the history of Pollution Probe and comments on the contrast between 1970's environmentalism in Canada and today.
Jo Royle, Officer for the Pew Charitable Trusts with the Global Ocean Legacy program about the very recent announcement by the UK government to approve the Pitcairn Islands Marine Reserve which is now the worlds largest fully protected marine space. We talk to Jo about the importance of protecting ocean space, the implicit difficultly of getting people and governments to care about something they almost never see or think about and the value of a clean ocean in general.

They have over 7 years of experience in the natural resource sector in Canada, they started his career in industry and has transitioned to work to positively influence environmental sustainability.
