In late June 2014, county clerks in Colorado challenged a ban on same-sex marriage by issuing marriage licenses to gay and lesbian couples. The state attorney general has ordered them to stop, and the case has reached the Colorado Supreme Court.
But few know that this is history repeating itself.
Back in 1975, Clela Rorex was the newly-elected County Clerk in Boulder when she began issuing marriage licenses to same sex couples.

In 2002, Lucinda Marker and her husband, John Tull, came down with the Bubonic Plague -- the same bacterial infection that killed about one-third of Europe's population in the Middle Ages.
Today, the plague is rare in the U.S., only a handful catch it each year and it's mostly found in Southwest states -- where Lucinda and John live.
They were bitten by fleas infected with plague near their home in New Mexico, and fell ill while vacationing in New York City.

In this Memorial Day episode, we'll hear from a daughter who lost her father 50 years ago in Vietnam, and a son who discovered something about his father one Memorial Day.
This is the story of a father’s grief at losing his son to a policeman’s bullet. It happened two decades before Ferguson or Baltimore and long before smartphone videos. Nicholas Heyward Sr., came to StoryCorps to remember his son, Nicholas, Jr., who was 13 when he died.

Today, StoryCorps remembers Wil Smith, who recorded a conversation with his daughter, Olivia, about being a single dad in college. At the time of this interview in 2012, Wil had just been diagnosed with colon cancer. He died on February 22, 2015 at 46 years old.

Sean Carter was a college student putting himself through school in Wichita Falls, Texas, when he was in a serious car accident.
He was riding with a friend who had been drinking, and sustained a traumatic brain injury in the crash.
Today, Sean is unable to walk and speaks only with the aid of a computer. At StoryCorps he interviewed his mother, Jenny Carter, who is his full-time caretaker.

Shane Fairchild, a transgender man lived with his wife Blue Bauer, a transgender woman for almost 6 years.
Blue transitioned when she was 54 years old. She and Shane met at a bar and were inseparable until Blue got lung cancer. She died on April 12, 2013.
Shane sat down with their friend, Sayer Johnson in St. Louis to remember Blue.

On January 30, 2015 Wendell Scott became the first African American driver to be inducted into the NASCAR Hall of Fame.
Scott started racing in 1952 toward the end of the Jim Crow era, and was the first African American to win at NASCAR’s elite major league level.
Scott’s family served as his racing team. They traveled to speedways together from their home in Danville, Virginia, and his sons worked as his pit crew.
Wendell Scott died in 1990. One of his sons, Frank, and his grandson Warrick, sat down to remember him for StoryCorps.

When Darlene Lewis' son was released from prison 20 years ago, he couldn't find work.
So, Darlene decided to do something about it.
She runs an organization dedicated to helping former inmates find jobs. Darlene prepares them for interviews, places them with local businesses, and advocates for them in court.
She's helped thousands of men and women -- including James Taylor, who served seven years for weapons possession and drug charges.
Today, James works as a videographer, youth mentor, and also volunteers for Darlene's organization.
They spoke at StoryCorps.

In July 2014, Raphael Hameed was walking with his 5-year-old son, Ish, when they were hit by a speeding car. Raphael lost his leg. Ish, his only son, was killed. While the driver is awaiting trial for vehicular homicide, her sister, Megiddëh Goldston, is trying to do right by the Hameed family. They connected after the accident. Ruth Coker Burks was in her early 20s and raising a small child when the AIDS epidemic hit Arkansas, her home state. Although she had no formal medical training, Ruth took it upon herself to care for AIDS patients who were abandoned by their families and medical professionals who feared the disease. Ruth estimates that she has cared for nearly 1000 people since the 1980s. One of those people was Paul Wineland’s partner. At StoryCorps Ruth told Paul about how she got started after visiting a friend at a hospital where one of the state’s early AIDS patient was dying.

But in October of that year the company that managed the home suddenly shut it down, leaving many of the elderly residents with nowhere to go. The staff stopped being paid so they all left, except for Maurice and Miguel. Today on StoryCorps we'll hear about an incident that occurred in 2009 between police in Denver Colorado and an African American teenager.
When Alex Landau was a college student, he was severely beaten by Denver Police officers after a traffic stop.
Alex is African-American. He was adopted by a white couple and he grew up in largely white, middle-class suburbs of Denver.
At StoryCorps, Alex and his mother, Patsy Hathaway, talked about how Alex's race has influenced his life and what happened that night when police pulled him over.

When the StoryCorps Mobile Booth visited Durham, North Carolina in 2006, David Wright decided to interview his friend, Eddie Lanier, Jr.
Eddie met David while panhandling on a highway exit ramp. He was homeless and fighting to stay sober. Eddie also had a history that few knew about — he is the son of a former mayor of Chapel Hill.
In 2014, StoryCorps returned to Durham and Eddie and David, who now live together, came back for a second interview. Eddie was suffering from a very advanced stage of emphysema, and didn’t have long to live. At StoryCorps, he spoke about the end of his life.

Cristina Peña was born HIV positive in 1984. Her father died from AIDS. Her mother is still living with HIV today. Cristina was told she was HIV positive when she was 9 years old, but she and her family kept it a secret from her schoolmates and friends.
In high school, she met and started dating Chris Ondaatje. One day after school Chris decided to tell Cristina that he was in love with her. That’s when Cristina sat him down for a revelation of her own. In this week’s podcast, Chris and Cristina talk about that first conversation, and their relationship over the past 13 years.

Army Captain Drew Pham was 24 years old when he completed a tour of duty in Afghanistan in October 2011.
Since returning, Drew has had a hard time making sense of what he saw at war and adjusting to life at home.
At StoryCorps, he spoke with his wife, Molly Pearl, about that transition and some of his most difficult combat memories.
Note: Drew was honorably discharged from the Army in 2013.

This podcast celebrates the fifth anniversary of the launch of StoryCorps' national mobile tour. We'll hear three stories recorded in Washington D.C. on the opening day of the mobile tour back in 2005.
