Welcome to Journey Map, the audio experience that deconstructs the career paths taken by some of the world's most interesting people.Today's guest is a high school friend of mine that graduated from Carleton University in 2010 with a Bachelor's in Cognitive Science. Quickly after that she started working as a Global Marketing Intern at Elizabeth Arden where she rose through the ranks pretty rapidly in positions like Marketing Analyst, Associate Marketing Manager for makeup, Associate Marketing Manager for Designer Fragrance, and then Global Marketing Manager for designer fragrance. She obtained a Master's degree in Cosmetics and Fragrance Marketing Management from the Fashion Institute of Technology, something I've never heard of but will be very interested to learn more about in the interview today. She then went on to work as Global Marketing Director of fragrance for Revlon. She would then move again and become the Marketing Director of Garnier skin care at L’Oreal. You may have heard some these brands before our guest is a go to when it comes to cosmetic and fragrance marketing she is Jenny Nuttall now Global Marketing Director at Maybelline.

Today's guest graduated from McGill in 2002 with a Bachelor of Commerce in Marketing and then later on got his MBA from the Schulich School of Business at York University. He was Partner and General Manager at Arya where he revitalized 20 year old businesses by developing B to B and B to C marketing plans. From there he went on to be the Chief Marketing Officer at Mygazines. Then in 2012 he takes a leap and co-founds a software company that empowers B to B Marketing and sales teams to create personalized content. He’s also author the author of “F#ck Content Marketing: Focus on Content Experience to Drive Demand, Revenue and Relationships”. This guy is a marketing guru and really I hate that word but in this case it is the only appropriate one I could find. Let’s imagine it's 2002, our next guest has just obtained a diploma in real estate and marketing management from the British Columbia Institute of Technology. Naturally, as one does he became a realtor and worked for a brokerage ranked in the top 12% Coldwell Bankers Realtors where he would market and sell about $10 million of metro Vancouver real estate through stages of client acquisition, property negotiation, and final contracts of purchase and sale. Before you get too excited keep in mind that $10 million dollars worth of metro Vancouver real estate translates intro about three sales of single family homes built in the 1970’s, I’m kidding of course but just barely I assume he did sell more than that. It was a short lived career, in 2008 he goes back to school this time at Royal Roads University obtaining a Bachelors of Commerce with a focus in Entrepreneurial Management which would give birth to a really unique career opportunity. Leading up to the 2010 Vancouver Olympics our guest delivered the experience for 12,000 olympic torch bearers on the longest relay in Olympic history with an overall budget of around $31 million dollars. He managed the daily logistics of assets and worked with a ten member team to ensure operational success in the 106 day and the 40,000 km campaign. After the games he would spend a year doing sales and marketing for a luxury travel destination club before putting his most recent degree in entrepreneurship to good use, founding an online business in the real estate lead generation industry, providing tools, tips and consulting to realtors. During this time he put his skills acquired during the Olympics to good use on campaigns for the Rick Hansen Foundation, Clara's Big Ride as part of the Bell Lets Talk campaign where he was the Senior Manager of Marketing and Partnerships. With all this partnership experience you must assume that this guy is the world's greatest spouse, there’s more though from 2014-2017 he would take on the role of Director of Partnerships and Retail for shoes.com, before finally landing in his current role as the Director of Partnerships at Unbounce. This is the storied career journey of Tyrone Lingley and he is sitting across the table from me. Tyrone is responsible for all aspects of partner relations, from the recruitment and development of partners, to the internal product and infrastructure requirements to support a world class partner program.

Today's guest graduated from Wilfrid Laurier University with a degree in business in 2003, and would find himself working for a company which at the time was arguably the most innovative technology company in the world. There he had the position of Carrier Relationship Manager, for Emerging Markets. Research in motion, otherwise known as BlackBerry would take notice of our guests skills in business development and actively start promoting him into more senior roles over the next seven years. He was a Business Development manager for licensing, then the Director of Carrier Management and finally as the Vice President responsible for managing BlackBerry’s Verizon business unit. For some context that was the number one carrier partner and channel globally for BlackBerry. In 2014, our guest joined a company that has the goal of creating a more sustainable world through better maintenance. They’re a maintenance management software company that focuses on partnering with customers who want to get their team off pen and paper and onto software so they can run more efficient, safe, and productively. And this company is off to a great start. They work with some of the worlds most well-known brands like Kraft Heinz, Siemens, and Molson Coors, and help them schedule, organize and optimize equipment maintenance and achieve greater results with Fiix— that’s Fiix with two i’s. The company's CEO is James Novak, a big thinker with a small ego and he happens to be sitting across the table from me today.

Welcome to Journey Map the audio experience that deconstructs the career paths taken by some of the world's most interesting people. Not to date today's guest too much but for context this guy graduated with a diploma in computer science in 1988, and not to make me sound like a baby in comparison but that’s literally the year that I was born. After graduating he became a Technology Consultant with Mercer Canada where he led development and marketing of solutions for corporate benefits administration. From there he became a Lotus Notes Business Manager before transitioning into the Marketing Director for Sybase now SAP the maker of the world's number one database. He then went on to become the head of product marketing for the world's number one business intelligence platform Cognos now IBM. Over the last twenty years our guest would continue the rise through various senior marketing roles, all the while gaining notoriety as one of the best growth hackers before this was even a term. The person sitting across the table from me today is Darryl Prail and he is currently the Chief Marketing Officer of Vanilla Soft, the industry’s most successful sales engagement platform that helps sales development teams engage with over 20 million sales contacts every month. Darryl is a high tech marketing executive with over 25 years of experience, spanning startups, restarts, consolidations, acquisitions, direct investments and IPOs. He’s a guest lecturer, a public speaker, radio personality and has been featured in numerous podcasts, case studies, and best selling books. Darryl is a former recipient of the coveted 40 under 40 award, and has held senior executive roles in leading companies including Sybase, IBM, Kinaxis and Airbus. In his career he’s raised over $50 million dollars in venture funding across multiple organizations and consulted with world class corporations including Salesforce, SAP, and Neilson to name a few.

Welcome to Journey Map the audio experience that deconstructs the career paths taken by some of the world's most interesting people. Today’s guest graduated from Laurentian University in 1993 with a degree in Geography, something I’m very interested in to learn how it is still applicable today. Since then he's come a long way, he’s held various positions such as Director of Emergency Management Systems at AGSI, President of Bramel Design and Construction, and now he holds the role of CEO and Founder at GoFor. For those of you who don’t know anything about GoFor, it’s a company that provides on demand delivery of construction material, powered by their construction industry specific logistics platform. It’s a niche space with a lot of opportunities though. The GoFor platform ensures a super fast delivery and is completely automated, reducing the time consumption of managing deliveries to nothing. In June of last year GoFor took home $500,000 in prize money after winning Accelerate OTT Pitch Fest, and this is pretty big it's the largest prize this Ottawa event has ever awarded.

Welcome to Journey Map the audio experience that deconstructs the career paths taken by some of the world's most interesting people. In 2007 today's guest was awarded the Dorothy Anne Dilworth Memorial Shield as the University of British Columbia Sauder School of Businesses most outstanding female graduate in the Bachelor of Commerce program, based on both academic achievement and volunteer contributions. While attending UBC she spent four years interning in essentially every part of HSBC Canada Bank. For context in 2007 she’s in customer service, in 2008 she joined the HR department working in talent management, 2009 she’s in the business intelligence group and in 2010 she basically ran the bases and taps home plate in the commercial banking group working with mid-market enterprises. After graduating our guest accepts a position as a business analyst with McKinsey, this phase in her Journey only lasts a few years as she takes what seems like a big leap into the e-commerce group of one of Vancouver's most iconic and most notable consumer brands: Lululemon. But, our guest seems to be consistently pulled to community building efforts and in 2016 the opportunity to build and scale a key strategic asset at her current company an ecosystem of app developers, and integration partners sounded like too much of a ‘Hoot’ to pass up. If that last sentence hasn’t already given it away the company is Hootsuite and its Director of Ecosystem Laura Silvester happens to be sitting across the table from me today.

Welcome to Journey Map the audio experience that deconstructs the career paths taken by some of the world's most interesting people. In 2009 a young researcher takes on an internship where he would create an environmental database for cement factories in France with the goal of enabling eco assessments. He feels right at home with an Undergrad in Math a Masters in Industrial Engineering and spending time at Stanford studying Mechanical Engineering. The next year, he'd moved to California and became an analyst, designing and implementing statistical models, developing, expanding and maintaining OLAP Cube solutions and designing star and snowflake schemas. I literally have no idea what any of that means, but if we fast forward to today and that math obsessed researcher has co-founded a company that helps SaaS companies increase conversion rates, up-sells and customer retention by analyzing customer behaviour in apps by enriching leads with relevant data his company is able to find out what truly makes people change and then predicts which customers are to engage and why. From there, actual next steps are provided to increase conversion and engagement. The company is MadKudu and its Co-Founder and Chief Revenue Officer Francis Brero is sitting across the table from me. In MadKudu, Francis has created a leading marketing operations platform for B2B. As a college math major, he has always strived to leverage his passion for numbers to drive growth. For the last 10 years, Francis has helped make marketing teams increase sales by using customer data. His years of experience led him to advise marketing strategies and tactics at some small, relatively unknown companies like Slack, Shopify and IBM. Kidding, of course.

Welcome to Journey Map the audio experience that deconstructs the career paths taken by some of the world's most interesting people. To say that our guest today has been a force in reimagining the way the world buys things is a bit of an understatement, but she has some pretty humble beginnings. In 2001 she enrolled in a creative design course developing a range of hands on computing and multimedia skills in areas like web design, animation, graphic design, sound and video editing, and digital marketing. Remember this is 2001 the ‘Flash Era’, from there she would go on to obtain a degree in multimedia technology and an MBA in ecommerce. Since then she has advanced her career at a pretty steady pace moving from UX Analyst to Lead User Research Experiencer, and Interaction Designer / Usability Specialist. Then in 2013 she would introduce the concepts of user experience research and the practices that go along with it into her new employers company. Six years later she is still there and those efforts have helped build products that are used by more than one million companies around the world that collectively contributed over $183 billion dollars in global economic activity last year.

The company of course is Shopify and its VP of User Experience and General Manager of its Core Product Lynsey Thornton is sitting across the table from me today. Originally from Ireland and currently based in Vancouver, Lynsey has spent the last six years leading both a team and a discipline and helps hundreds of ‘Shopifiers’ be successful in their roles as product designers, UX developers, researchers, and content strategists. With this background in design, project management, and business she focuses on building UX teams and practices in high growth tech companies and has been doing so for quite a while. Her true loves are ethnographic research and developing women in tech today.
