Miftaah has one goal, to make scholarly knowledge accessible to everyone, whether it be through our part-time Associate's Program, Miftaah Online, or our various free programs. When the Prophet SAW passed, the religious community was on the brink of collapse. Even Umar ibn Khattab RA, one of the upcoming Rightly Guided Caliphs was in complete denial and in a frenzy. With the community and the future of the religion barely hanging on, Abu Bakr RA was tasked to unite them.

We are afraid of being caught in situations that may ruin our reputations and our social standings. A young man in Medina was tempted towards wrongdoing, but he later became unconscious because of his God-consciousness. Just like many do today, the Companions also had FOMO, the fear of missing out. Their FOMO was not related to their own desires, but rather their capacity for good deeds. The Prophet SAW is unable to commit mindful mistakes, yet he still went out of his way to worship God at night, striving to the point that made his wife, Aisha RA worried. “Shall I not be a thankful servant?” is what came out of his noble lips (SAW), as he recited verses that make us ponder the reality of God’s signs.

We may not look at the Quran as a means of enrichment, but it truly is, primarily spiritually and even financially. The Night Prayer, qiyaam-ul-layl/tahajjud, is a fundamental prayer to any Muslim trying to gain intimacy and closeness to Allah. The Prophet SAW had such beautiful gatherings with his Companions in Medina. It was informal and anyone could join. Women could ask straightforward questions without judgment. We had an exclusive nasheed launched on the blessed 27th night of Ramadan with Zain Bhikha and Shaykh Abdullah Misra who wrote the nasheed. For Shaykh Abdullah, this was a song written in an intimate manner with his relationship with Prophet SAW.

The Importance of Purpose
Nihilism, the idea that life is meaningless, is rampant in Western society and has even crept into Muslims' ideologies. If one believes life is devoid of meaning, then life can become filled with anxiety, dread, and lethargy. Islam acts as an antidote to this, giving us purpose in our lives from all the way from the most important principle, the Oneness of Allah, to the simple acts of smiling at our brothers and sisters.

One of the believer's biggest pursuits is to understand Quranic Arabic. We may sometimes have a misconception that the Arabic language is too difficult and is not for us, but that is far from the case. There is something special that happens when we simply make the intention and make an effort; Allah SWT makes it easy for those who are sincere in this pursuit. The feeling of being able to understand the Quran is transformative. Ustadh Adam Jamal, who specializes in teaching Arabic, will discuss this with our Miftaah Scholars, who have spent years teaching the language of the Qur'an.

According to our guest Shaykh Rami Nsour, there are two peoples he has interacted with that remind him of the Companions: the Mauritanians (who he lived and studied with) and prisoners. Prisoners may sound like an interesting choice, but considering the struggles and the conditions that they practice their Islam in, it is easier to understand because of all that they have lost. The brightest day this world has seen was when the Prophet SAW was born. It was the beginning of a life that brought the light of revelation into the world, which had corrected and beautified the lives of many through the deen of Islam. Subsequently, the darkest day this world has experienced was when he SAW passed away, causing much grief to the ummah. In an emotional segment, they synthesize and discuss losing their beloved family members with the loss of the Beloved Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him.
As believers, the single most impactful process we will go through is death. What really matters in life is the state in which we pass away, as it determines our future in the Hereafter. Our special guest, Shaykh Omar Suleiman, Founder and President of Yaqeen Institute, tells us that if we want to die with a good ending, then we must live in a good way. In an emotional and personal segment, Shaykh Omar and our Miftaah Scholars discuss our mortality in an optimistic manner.

This is a natural phenomenon, but many of us do not know how to navigate conflict without it escalating into something bigger than it should be. How do we resolve these situations? Ustadh Wahaj Tarin, a prominent scholar from Australia, starts off our discussion with a hadith narrating a conflict between Abu Bakr and Umar ibn Khattab (RA). With our Miftaah scholars, he discusses practical tips, starting with "Win the heart, not the argument."
A favorite of many Muslims, Surah Ad-Dhuha was revealed to the Prophet SAW during a time where revelation had stopped and he is being hit with vicious insults. He has not been visited by Jibreel AS, who is like a friend to him and he has lost his family members Khadijah RA and (some narrations say) Abu Talib. This surah is a relief to those who are experiencing great sorrow and stress, with Allah SWT telling us that He is here for us.
The Prophet SAW would wish for everyone in his ummah to memorize this surah, presumably because of all the benefits within it. In this session, we are not covering all of Surah Yaseen, but just the ninth ayah, which is an ayah to recite if the believer is in a state of fear and sadness. Our scholars discuss how the Prophet SAW recited this before he left the city that was beloved to him, Makkah Mukarama.
We all juggle many different roles and responsibilities and wonder how we can possibly do justice to all of them. The best of creation, the Prophet SAW, had all these responsibilities and more; how did he manage to do them so well (SAW)? Shaykh Imran Shariff shares a personal, heartwarming story from his own personal life that should inspire all of us. In Surah Layl, Allah SWT is adjusting how the Muslims view wealth, as the Companions would struggle in regards to their financial status. Essentially, Allah SWT is telling us not to care what others think and to only care about the status with Allah SWT. Even at the highest moment of his life, the Heavenly Ascent, the Prophet SAW was still described as a "servant," not as a king or different honorific.

Surah A'la was a surah the Prophet SAW loved; he would recite this in days of celebration (Jum'ah and Eid) and he even recited this surah in the last prayer he led. This surah commands them to continuously praise the name of Allah SWT, showing them that even though it may seem bleak, Allah's plan is perfect.

We recite Surah Al-Kahf every Friday by the will of Allah, and the story of the People of the Cave covers four challenges that all humans generally face. This session does not focus on those themes, but rather a narration of the Prophet SAW that tells us those that recite/memorize the first 10 and last 10 verses of Surah Al-Kahf are protected from the greatest tribulation, that of the Dajjal, the Anti-Christ.

There are few things going on Behind The Scenes during the revelation of Surah Takwir. This is being addressed to the nonbelievers of Makkah, who had a couple of good qualities, but they largely lacked the idea of an afterlife that members of the Abrahamic faiths did. The importance of accountability is important, that we will all be resurrected and stand in front of Allah, as that guides our actions.

On our Virtual Journey, we visit different monuments near the Ka'aba, one of the notable being Mina. It is where the Prophet SAW struggled to receive support, even being rebuked by his own uncle. With the partial cancellation of Hajj, during the first ten days of Dhul Hijjah 2020, Shaykh Abdullah Waheed, Mufti Abdul Rahman Waheed, and Shaykh Mohamed Almasmari took us on a Virtual Journey of Hajj.
Because of the influence of the Prophet SAW (through the will of Allah SWT), the Ka’bah🕋 had experienced a New Beginning. Even after migrating🐪, the Prophet SAW had a connection with the Ka’bah, hoping for the Qibla to be changed towards it. Years later, during the Conquest of Makkah, the Prophet SAW told the Quraysh that it was a day of mercy, not defiling the sanctity of the House of Allah. The Prophet SAW cleaned out the idols🗿 and painted pictures inside the Ka’bah, returning the House of Allah back to complete monotheism, tawheed. The Ka’bah is a symbol of the connection with Allah, with the ummah unified under the belief of tawheed, the Oneness of Allah.

Even in his early days, the Prophet's Connection (SAW) with the House of Allah🕋, the Ka’bah was strong and direct. The Quraysh used to be particular about others’ use of the Ka’aba and would generally keep special privileges to themselves. They would only allow outsides to wear clothes and eat food near the Ka’bah that was from the Quraysh. Abdul Muttalib, the grandfather of the Prophet SAW, used to let him sit in an ennobled space within the Ka’bah, showing his preference for him. Much later, the Prophet SAW would seclude himself in the Cave of Hira⛰️ because of all the idols🗿 near the Ka’bah, but he would still have a direct view. This connection would only increase after he received revelation from Allah (SWT).

Now, we have left Medina and head towards Makkah. This departure happens while wearing the ihram and takes about ten hours via driving; the Prophet SAW would make this journey without any of our current technologies. There are many intentions to make as we approach this city. The pilgrimage to have complete forgiveness from Allah SWT has come even closer, in the historical place of the worship of Allah, Makkah Al-Mukarama.

35 years after the Year of the Elephant🐘, the Prophet SAW is a young man who spent his whole life in Mecca. Being Al-Amin (the trustworthy, the honest) heralding a great reputation with the Quraysh, he would soon come to make a prophetic placement. The Kaaba🕋 went through different types of wear and tear through the years, and the leaders of the Quraysh decided it needed a reconstruction. After constructing most of it, they had a large disagreement of who was to place the Black Stone. The Prophet SAW was selected, and he told all the tribes to lift the stone on a sheet, after which he placed it in its spot (which has not changed). Symbolically, he mirrored his forefather Ibrahim AS, in the role in which shaped how the Ka’aba is structured.

Soon, birds🐦 with stones in their beaks and claws begin to hail down upon Abraha and his army, piercing and penetrating through them. Abraha soon dies a painful death. This event was a means of protecting the prophecy of the Prophet (SAW) and would come to know as the Year of the Elephant🐘.

At the time where the ummah was recovering from the casualties of the Battle of Uhud, the single biggest force of the Quraysh came to battle the Muslims at this low. With the recommendation of Salman Al-Farsi, they begin to build a trench that took them over 15 days to build. Because of the dedication of Ibrahim AS and Ismail AS, the Ka’aba🕋 became the center of worship, a hotspot, for those in Mecca, but unfortunately, many of the teachings had become lost, as idol worshipping became prevalent as well as a loss in moral behavior. The Ka’aba would soon come under siege by an army of elephants🐘🐘. Abraha, a man who builds a massive cathedral🔔 in the name of his king, wanted to make his cathedral the center of worship so he decided to take an army of thousands of soldiers to destroy the Ka’aba🕋. The House of Allah would need to be protected against this imminent threat.

The Prophet SAW had a special relationship with Mount Uhud, expressing his love for the mountain. Ibrahim AS is then commanded by Allah to instruct others to come for pilgrimage to the Ka’bah from every distant corner and valley of the world🌎. This building was constructed many years ago, yet the pilgrimage is done to this very day, as people visit the House of Allah to suffice His Command. The story of the Ka’aba🕋 is a story of devotion, submission, and loyalty and reminds us to be steadfast in our faith when we face challenges.

As we arrived in Medina, the next place to visit is to visit the grave of the Prophet SAW. When one visits his grave (SAW), he personally responds to the greetings and salutations upon him. As they found the water of Zamzam💦, Hajar and Ismail AS give permission to the traveling tribe of Jurhum to settle down, while Ibrahim AS is going through a high level of sacrifice to be away from his family to please Allah SWT. Eventually, Hajar passes away and Ismail AS deeply reflects and is finding purpose within his life. After a visit from his father, he finds that his purpose to build a house for the sake of Allah🕋, and he sets out to accomplish the noble objective that will be seen for generations.

Now, we have arrived in Medina, with a burning excitement because the initial entrance. This excitement was also shared by the Prophet SAW who hastened his steed as he reached Medina. This entrance is filled with love for the Prophet SAW, in which our spiritual state is increased and greatly changed. Medina was once a city with diseases and hardship, and through the supplication of the Prophet SAW, it became a blessed city we visit, with the blessing of Allah. Although she started from Humble Beginnings, Sayyida Hajar is an ennobled figure within the history of Islam and the Ka’bah. In a well-known story, Sayyida Hajar was left with Ismail AS alone in a place void of vegetation, water, or trees. In the barren desert, with whatever means she had, she ran between the hills of Safa and Marwa. Eventually, the life source she is looking for is revealed, through the wealth of Zamzam, showing us the power of trusting in Allah SWT, yet still striving.

The ability to go to Medina and Makkah, to visit the Prophet SAW and the House of Allah SWT, is a blessing. We have felt the impact of not being able to visit this year, due to the cancellation of most of the pilgrimage. More important than the actual journey, divine acceptance from Allah SWT is why we visit and complete this pillar of faith.
