June 21, 2026 Maha-dukkhakkhandha Sutta The Greater Discourse on the Mass of Suffering
Challenged to show the difference between his teaching and that of other ascetics, the Buddha points out that they speak of letting go, but do not really understand why. He then explains in great detail the suffering that arises from attachment to sensual stimulation.
June 14,2026 Maha Sihananda Sutta
A disrobed monk, Sunakkhatta, attacks the Buddha’s teaching because it merely leads to the end of suffering. The Buddha counters that this is, in fact, praise, and goes on to enumerate his many profound and powerful achievements.
June 7, 2026 The Buddha declares that only those following his path can genuinely experience the four stages of awakening. This is because, while much is shared with other systems, none of them go so far as to fully reject all attachment to the idea of a self.
May 10, 2026 MN 10 Satipaṭṭhāna Sutta Delson goes through the first half of the sutta and explains it.
***Here the Buddha details the seventh factor of the noble eightfold path, mindfulness meditation. This collects many of the meditation teachings found throughout the canon, especially the foundational practices focusing on the body, and is regarded as one of the most important meditation discourses.
Apr 26, 2026 MN 9 Sammaditthi Sutta

Mar 15, 2026 MN 5: Anaṅgaṇa Sutta – Unblemished
This sutta, found in the Majjhima Nikāya, explores the nature of mental blemishes and the importance of self-awareness in spiritual development. Ven. Sāriputta explains four types of individuals based on whether they are blemished or unblemished and whether they recognize their state. The key insight is that true virtue lies not in being free of flaws, but in recognizing them and striving to overcome them.

Feb 8, 2026 MN 1: Mūlapariyāya Sutta
This is the first discourse in the Majjhima Nikāya, the "Middle-length Discourses" of the Pāli Canon. It is a foundational and challenging sutta that directly confronts the tendency to posit a metaphysical origin or ultimate source for all existence—rejecting monistic views such as those found in Samkhya philosophy.
The sutta systematically examines and dismisses various speculative theories about the root of all things, including the idea of a primordial self, a cosmic principle, or an eternal substance. Instead, it emphasizes that there is no single, unchanging source from which all phenomena arise. This is central to Buddhist non-theistic and non-essentialist thought.

Delson Armstrong explains each Jhana MN 111 Anupada Sutta: One by One As They Occurred This is one of his best talks on the characteristics of Jhana. Where: Dhamma Sukha Meditation Center https://www.dhammasukha.org MN 111 Anupada Sutta: One by One As They Occurred Thus have i heard. On one occasion the Blessed One was living at Savatthi in Jeta's Grove, Anathapindika's Park. There he addressed the bhikkhus thus: "Bhikkhus, Sariputta is wise; Sariputta has great wisdom; Sariputta has wide wisdom; Sariputta has joyous wisdom; Sariputta has quick wisdom; Sariputta has keen wisdom; Sariputta has penetrative wisdom. During half a month, bhikkhus, Sariputta had insight into states one by one as they occurred. Now Sariputta's insight into states one by one as they occurred was this: "Here, bhikkhus, quite secluded from sensual pleasures, secluded from unwholesome states, Sariputta entered upon and abided in the first jhana, which is accompanied by applied and sustained thought, with rapture and pleasure born of seclusion." "And the states in the first jhana - the applied thought, the sustained thought, the rapture, the pleasure, and the unification of mind; the contact, feeling, perception, volition, and mind; the zeal, decision, energy, mindfulness, equanimity, and attention these states were defined by him one by one as they occurred; known to him those states arose, known they were present, known they disappeared. He understood thus: 'So indeed, these states, not having been, come into being; having been, they vanish.' Regarding those states, he abided unattracted, unrepelled, independent, detached, dissociated, with a mind rid of barriers. He understood: 'There is an escape beyond,' and with the cultivation of that attainment, he confirmed that there is."

The Buddha reprimands him and, with a series of memorable similes, stresses the dangers in misapplying and misrepresenting the Dhamma. The sutta culminates in one of the most impressive disquisitions on non-self found in the Canon.

The Upanisa sutta list the 23 links or the full series of Dependent Origination. Usually we just talk about the 12 links which is from Ignorance to Suffering. But the suffering link is the condition for the next 11 links to arise which finally culminates in Nibbana. In other words, it is suffering which leads to the desire to get off the wheel.

In this Sutta Sariputta explains the Jhanas and the full Path leading to Nibbana and awakening. Each Jhana and its characteristics are explained and described. These are the "Ariya" jhanas and not concentration described in other sects which is one-pointed. Using the relax step and 6Rs ones attains a different kind of Jhana (state -in Pali) which progressively eliminates craving as one goes deeper. Finally there is no Tanha (craving) left and the mind comes to a stop. Then something amazing happens.

Delson Armstrong is the TWIM teacher for this retreat. On the first day he gives the very beginning instructions for people who have not practiced before. Then he gives advanced instructions for people who have advanced beyond the Spiritual Friend.
The practice is Tranquil Wisdom Insight Meditation (TWIM) based on the earliest Buddhist Suttas. The practice uses Lovingkindness or Metta as the object of meditation. This will lead to the ultimate experience of Nibbana when successfully completed. Metta is not just for stress while you do Breath, it is will lead you to the supra-mundane when practice correctly. It will lead you through all 8 jhānas to the end of suffering!

Contemplate the awesome power of the Buddha. Why? There is much merit in thinking and considering all of the powers that the Buddha possessed.
This is a 30min guided contemplation of the Buddha's qualities. The meditator should listen to the qualities and marks and consider the incredible nature of a Buddha. This will uplift your mind and someday you may be reborn a solitary Buddha.
In the sutta on Asokarvana in the Avaydana or Divine Stories, there is a Bull that is about to slaughtered for meat by an evil butcher. The Bull knows this but sees the Buddha, and goes to the Buddha and prostrates and licks his feet, The Buddha understands that the Bull is to be killed and asks Sakkha, King of the Gods of the thirty-three. to pay the Butcher his fee and release the Bull from being killed. BECAUSE OF THE FAITH OF THE BULL IN THE BUDDHA, the Buddha relates that in subsequent lifetimes the Bull will be reborn in higher and higher heavenly existences and then finally come back to the Human Plane and, because of his merit, will become a solitary or Pacekka Buddha!
Just because of his having so much FAITH. So consider the qualities and have faith in the Buddha and see what happens. You will feel the feeling of confidence and faith and this can take you into a jhana.
This Guided Meditation is designed for Students of TWIM (Tranquil Wisdom Insight Meditation & the 6Rs). It was created by Delson Armstrong and is led here by David Johnson of www.dhammasukha.org.
This is led by David Johnson from Dhamma Sukha Meditation Center. We start by doing some lovingkindness meditation to get grounded. As the mind calms we enter the first Jhana. We observe all the factors spoken of by the sutta. And then we proceed to 2nd, 3rd and finally 4th Jhana where the meditation ends.
In this guided meditation a group of students was led through each Jhana and was asked to see what factors and states arise in each one. The Anupada Sutta -MN 111- maps out the progress through all 8 jhānas to Nibbana.
This meditation is based on the practice and progress of TWIM (Tranquil wisdom Insight Meditation) taught by Bhante Vimalaramsi. The way Bhante teaches the Lovingkindness or Metta is using the earliest suttas which allow progress to be quite fast.

Vaccha:
"How is it then, Master Gotama? When Master Gotama is asked each of these ten questions, he replies: 'I do not hold this view.' What danger does Master Gotama see that he does not take up any of these speculative views?"
Buddha: "Vaccha, the speculative view that the world is eternal is a thicket of views, a wilderness of views, a contortion of views, a vacillation of views, a fetter of views. It is beset by suffering, by vexation, by despair, and by fever, and it does not lead to disenchantment, to dispassion, to cessation, to peace, to direct knowledge, to enlightenment, to Nibbana. Similarly for the speculative view that the world is not eternal...that the world is finite...that the world is infinite...that the soul and the body are the same...that the soul is one thing and the body another...that after death a Tathagata exists...that after death a Tathagata does not exist...that after death a Tathagata both exists and does not exist...that after death a Tathagata neither exists nor does not exist is a thicket of views

Sit in a chair or on the floor, whichever is comfortable. Sit for 30 minutes minimum-don't move at all. Bring up a happy memory of lovingkindness- Holding baby, pets etc. Radiate that feeling to yourself for 10 Minutes. Pick a spiritual friend and put them in your heart and radiate that feeling to them for balance of sitting. When the mind wanders use the 6Rs. RECOGNIZE the mind has gone away. RELEASE thinking about the distraction. RELAX and tension or tightness left. RE-SMILE put that smile back on your lips and in your mind. RETURN to your self or your Friend and REPEAT: Continue on and use 6Rs if distracted.

Delson Armstrong explains some research he was personally involved with at two Netherlands Universities in which he was hooked up to a number of machines which measured his response to various stimuli. The researchers were looking very closely at the unique state of Cessation which was achieved in deep states of meditation. A guide to the unique method of Forgiveness Meditation, developed over a two year period by Venerable Bhante Vimalaramsi of the Dhamma Sukha Meditation Center. When this simple system is practiced it goes directly to solving the hard-heartedness that plagues all of us, and prevents our lovingkindness from blossoming.
It can be practiced at home in a few daily sessions, and after a week of practice you might realize that this is far more powerful then any drug or therapist you might find. It goes directly to the heart of the issue without turning away.
You must want to change! If so, this is your way to an open heart and a much deeper meditation practice.

In this booklet are the instructions for Loving-kindness Meditation (Metta) and the Practice of the Brahma Viharas which is based on the earliest Buddhist suttas, and if practiced correctly, will lead you to the supreme goal of Nibbana — in this very life.
This booklet gives easy to follow instructions for a daily practice. Just 30 minutes a day gets you on a path to a deep experience of the truth. A month or two can even yield your first jhana experience because of the special "relax" step that is added for eliminating hindrances.
For over 40 years Bhante Vimalaramsi researched and practiced many methods without finding any real satisfaction. He went back to the earliest Buddhist teachings. He found what he was seeking.
Bhante's method of “The 6Rs", based on Right Effort, is the key to the cessation of craving and the elimination of ignorance.
Bhante Vimalaramsi has been a monk since 1986 and practiced with many of the major Buddhist teachers in Asia. He now teaches all over the world and is the abbot of the Dhamma Sukha Meditation Center near St. Louis, Mo, USA.

Metta is part of the Brahma Viharas found and described in the earliest Buddhists texts as another path to awakening including breath. This meditation will lead you directly to the deep awakening of the heart and mind. You spend the first 10-15 minutes by radiating Loving Kindness to yourself and then to a Spiritual Friend and finally to the 6 directions as required in the full BrahmaVihara Practice. https://www.dhammasukha.org/the-6rs.html
It is guided by David Johnson, senior student of Bhante Vimalaramsi

Here, Bhante gives his different perspective on what the Buddha taught when he gave the foundations of mindfulness. This sutta is looked at in a different way and leads to what he calls his development of the method of Tranquil Wisdom Insight Meditation and the 6Rs. It leads to the highest attainment of the spiritual life, Nibbana. He explains that Breath Meditation is taught in the suttas in a slightly different way then is practiced by most meditators. Adding the Tranquilize step makes all the difference in the result. Sutta Translation by Bhikkhu Bodhi

Venerable Bhante Vimalaramsi has now created a powerful Forgiveness Meditation. When someone close to you dies and grief, and sometimes even guilt, arise afterwards, one seeks this kind of a meditation to reduce your suffering. This is just one example of unwholesome states that get stuck in your mind.
Additionally Bhante has found that when a student gets stuck in the Metta meditation and is making no progress he suggest the student to go through the Forgiveness Meditation. This enables them to remove the barriers that are there, and as a result, true warm sincere loving-kindness arises. Then the student moves back to the powerful Metta meditation that Bhante teaches. A meditation that will take the student to awakening.

"An Effective Method to Dissolving Blocks to Loving-Kindness and Living in the Present Moment"
Spoken by David Johnson
From "Guide to Forgiveness Meditation" by Vimalaramsi
Apparently, in some cases, if we do get into trouble with generating lovingkindness, we can clear the runway for our Mindfulness of Loving-Kindness to take off by first learning to use Mindfulness of Forgiveness meditation. This is an extremely powerful and cleansing practice. Forgiveness is a form of loving-kindness that really clears our mind of negative or unwholesome states.

In this short episode Bhante explains the path that got him to the Suttas and the discovery of the missing step. Some sound quality issues.
Bhante reads the sutta MN 148. This is a very powerful sutta on Not-Self and Dependent Origination. Many monks became awakened after listening to this sutta. Perhaps you can too.
Really listen to it and see how it is working in your own mind and how nothing that arises is you.
David Johnson interviews Bhante Vimalaramsi and asks some general questions.
Why meditate? What does this do for me.
What precepts do and why you have to maintain them.
Why and how TWIM works.

David Johnson interviews Bhante Vimalaramsi on two important subjects. What is Mindfulness? A new definition based on the suttas is given based on the Satipatthana Sutta.
Based on this new definition of mindfulness this leads to a whole new type of Jhana, not an absorption jhana or state of concentration, but, rather, an aware relaxed, open state.
What is confusing is that these two types of jhana are related and have similar characteristics. The Buddha had rejected the concentration states that he found in the first few years of his journey; later he found a different type of jhana. Bhante discusses this.
What is Craving? Bhante talks about tension and tightness.

Bhante Vimalaramsi is interviewed by senior student David Johnson (Author - The Path to Nibbana) on his personal journey of awakening. Also Bhante's many unique views are probed in this 1 1/2 hr discussion of Bhante's views and what he found through his own practice.
Questions answered:
How did he come to meditation.
The disaster that happened to him before he left for Asia.
What is the Mango story and how did he get along with a Cobra in a Thai cave!
Why is noone really paying attention to the Suttas.
What is the real meaning of Mindfulness.
What is the Tranquilize step and its importance as described in the Satipathana Sutta and the Anapansati Sutta.
What are Jhanas and how do they arise. Are there really two types of Jhanas? Why?
How do the Jhanas lead to Nibbana?
What does he teach now? What is TWIM?

Recite along with David the refuges and precepts each day. Simply listen and repeat.
Text of Daily Refuges and Precepts:
Good morning, good evening, wherever you are! My name is David Johnson. I'll be leading you in the precepts and refuges and the Dhammapada verses today. If you need a copy of what I am reading from, please go to our website www.dhammasukha.org. So let's get started.
Please sit with your backs straight, and calm your mind, now repeat after me.
I now take refuge in the Buddha.
I now take refuge in the Dhamma.
I now take refuge in the Sangha.
For the second time, I take refuge in the Buddha.
For the second time, I take refuge in the Dhamma.
For the second time, I take refuge in the Sangha.
For the third time, I take refuge in the Buddha.
For the third time, I take refuge in the Dhamma.
For the third time, I take refuge in the Sangha.
So let's take our daily precepts.
Please clear your mind and pay close attention, then repeat after me.
Now you have taken the three refuges and the precepts and these lead to Happiness and Peace. Sadhu! Sadhu! Sadhu!
Now, let us read the verses of the Dhammapada together.
Mind is the forerunner of all evil states. Mind is chief; mind made are they. If one speaks or acts with an unwholesome mind, because of that, suffering follows one, even as the wheel follows the hoof of the draft-ox.
2] Mind is the forerunner of all good states. Mind is chief; mind-made are they. If one speaks or acts with a pure mind, because of that, happiness follows one, even as one’s shadow that never leaves.
3] “He abused me, he beat me, he defeated me, he robbed me”, in those who harbor such thoughts hatred is not appeased.
4] “He abused me, he beat me, he defeated me, he robbed me”, in those who do not harbor such thoughts hatred is appeased.
5] Hatred is never overcome by hatred in this world. Hatred is only overcome by love. This is an eternal law.
11] In the unessential we imagine the essential, in the essential we see the unessential, anyone who entertains such wrong thoughts never will realize the truth.
12] What is essential we regard as essential, what is unessential we regard as unessential, anyone who entertains such right thoughts will realize the truth.
16] Here one develops a mind that rejoices now, and in the future one rejoices. In both states the well-doer rejoices. One who rejoices a lot will be able to see the purity of their own deeds, speech and thoughts.
18] When one is happy now, they will be happy in the future. In both states the well-doer is happy. Thinking “I have done good in the past” one becomes happy and will easily experience a blissful state of mind.
19] Though a person recites sacred texts, but doesn’t act accordingly, that heedless person is like a cowherd who counts others’ cows. They have no share in the fruits of the holy life.
20] Though a person recites the sacred texts very little, but acts in accordance with the teaching, they give up lust, hatred and delusion. They truly know what is good and this leads to a mind that is free from suffering. They cling to nothing here and in the future. In this way, one shares the fruits of the holy life.
Bhante Vimalaramsi discusses how the Buddha taught Metta to reach awakening and he mentioned it many more times than the breath meditation or anapanasati.
In the suttas he clearly says that using Metta as part of the Brahmavihara Meditation is a fast way to Nibbana.
