Sarah Sulewski is currently a second-year MFA Acting student at the University of Florida. She is originally from the sunny state of California, and she identifies as a Queer, Black, multi-hyphenate artist who believes in the power of art to change the world. Since attending UF, she has starred in five on-campus productions: Yemaya's Belly, Blood at the Root, The Solo Performance Festival, La Mar, and the musical The Prom. She is currently in rehearsals for her sixth UF production, The Pliant Girls, a feminist retelling of Aeschylus' The Suppliants.

Who do you think of when I say “First American Girls”? Is it the founding mothers like Abigail Adams and Martha Washington? They’re too old...and too far ahead in the American story. Dr. Megan C. Rose is an Adjunct Associate Lectuerer in Sociology and Social Science and Policy at the University of New South Wales in Sydney, Australia. Her research explores the value of creativity, cute theory, critical femininities and inclusion. She is currently investigating the experiences of kawaii and gothic alternative communities in Japan, as well as marginalised groups in the Australian Higher Education system. Megan is currently developing a new portfolio of postdoctoral research that involves collaboration and co-authorship with stakeholders in kawaii and gothic alternative communities, as well as a study of feminist activism that uses kawaii imagery to mobilize political actors.
Haruka Kurebayashi is an internationally known model and mentor for Decora-chan girls via her blog, Instagram, Twitter, and YouTube. Originally from Shizuoka prefecture, Kurebayashi launched her brand 90884 in 2013 and is a frequent model for fashion magazine KERA.
Rei Saionji is a Tokyo native and explorer of Japanese culture and tradition. She is the author of 2 Hours Drive from Tokyo.

Being an entrepreneur is not easy and being a female one is even harder. Historically and in the current day, female entrepreneurs face many challenges to starting and sustaining businesses. Not only do female entrepreneurs have to face inequality, limited access to education, familial pressure, sexism and more in many patriarchal societies– but women also have to tackle funding biases’, a lack of role models and supportive networks in the business world as well. Despite these challenges, female entrepreneurs can and are emerging, and their ranks are growing each day.
Tia Shah explores the many struggles that girl entrepreneurs have historically had to overcome, and the ones that they currently face – seeing how a changing environment and world has eliminated some challenges while perpetuating others.

In this podcast, Tia Shah explores the power of food in Indian culture. In 2018, we are celebrating several significant moments in suffrage history. 110 years ago, the first female member of parliament was elected in Finland, which was also the first country to introduce women’s suffrage. 170 years ago, the Seneca Falls Convention - the first-ever women’s rights convention - was held in the United States, and would lead to the introduction of the first legislation for suffrage in Congress only twenty years later. And finally, on February 6, 2018, we celebrated 100 years since British women (at least, those over the age of 30) gained the right to vote.
These are all significant moments in history, but oftentimes, suffrage history focuses solely on the adult women who fought for our right to vote. But what about young girls? Did they play a role? In this podcast, we’ll explore the stories of three young girls - Clara Lemlich, Dora Thewlis, and Bessie Watson - who were active in the suffrage movements. We’ll also look at some interesting thoughts about girls

While researching various ‘girl queens’ - i.e., queens under the age of 21 - I came across a story that seemed absolutely fitting for this wonderful, rainbow-filled month of celebration. It’s the story of a young girl who came into power early, who sought to understand all she could of the world, and whose power was used to create peace, intercultural understanding, and advance a society where learning and artistic achievement were paramount. Yet it’s also a story of secrets and regrets - of love perhaps unrequited, of a nation left reeling, and ultimately, of a woman who defied every authority of her age to assert her own vision of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.
This is the story of the most intriguing queen I’ve found yet: Christina of Sweden.

In celebration of our Heroines Quilt V: From Dark to Light exhibition, Tiffany explores the lives and works of female troubadours - known as trobairitz - during the 11th and 12th centuries. These incredible female poets and singers explored themes that resonate with us today, and provided one of the few examples of true female power and advocacy during the Medieval period.
Our podcast features "A chantar m'er de so qu'eu no volria", a 12th century Occitan language song by Comtessa de Dia. It is the only surviving music by a woman troubadour.

Do you know the tale of the "stolen girls" of the Civil Rights Movement? Join Emily Chandler to explore the story of the Leesburg Stockade, an event in the history of the African-American civil rights movement in which a group of girls, aged eleven to fifteen, were abducted by the police and unlawfully imprisoned in a condemned stockade for taking part in a peaceful protest. The girls were subjected to inhumane conditions and unable to contact their families for rescue. Yet their courage and tenacity helped them to navigate this life-changing experience. Many of the stolen girls, still alive today, are dedicated to making the world a better and fairer place for African-American people.

So firstly what was the Kindertransport? Kindertransport means “Children’s transport” in German and it was the mass movement of young children, mainly Jewish, out of Germany and occupied or threatened lands to safer countries, primarily Great Britain. After “Kristallnacht” or “night of the broken glass” in 1938, many people and some governments realized that the situation in Germany had become dangerous for Jewish people. With some persuasion the British government, who at the time governed the safest place in Europe, decided to let a small amount of unaccompanied minors, to be fostered in to British families.
