If I’m not fly fishing or making fly fishing videos or content myself, one of the most enjoyable things for me to do is watching beautiful fly fishing movies from amazing producers. Lou DiGena is an accomplished fly tier from New Jersey. He’s an extraordinary guy. We dive deep into fly tying, photography, digital media, and fine art. As I learned on this podcast, he is a professor of fine art and digital media at St John University.
I don’t think either of us thought we were going down the art rabbit hole but that is the fun part of podcasts, learning about your guests as a person and their expertise. It clear Lou is an artist, both behind the vise, behind the lens and in various other art mediums.
He stresses the idea of observation both in art and on the water and how focused observation will make you a better fly tier and fly fisherman.
We close with some of Lou’s best tips for improving your fly tying and his favorite flies, dry, nymph and streamer. Stay tuned…

Eric Naguski is an author and guide from Boiling Springs, PA. Central Pennsylvania fly fishing is something of fly fishing folk lore. From the chalk streams to the spring creeks, many say this area has some of the most historic and best trout fishing in the country. Rivers like the Letort, Spring Creek, Yellow Breaches, Big Spring and more. You can feel the history and nostalgia just setting one wading boot in the cool waters of Penns Creek or Little J.
In this podcast, I dive into the fishing and flies of this beautiful area with author, Eric Naguski. In his book Favorite Flies for Pennsylvania, 50 Essential Patterns From Local Experts, Eric covers the meat and potatoes of the hatches and flies for fooling local trout. The good news is most of these patterns are great for trout fishing around the world. With some of the key patterns, he offers a look back on the designer of the pattern as well as best fishing techniques.
I love how Eric pays homage to some of the fishing legends of this area. He’s not shy at saying he and so many of today’s fly fishing professionals are standing on the shoulders of greats like Vince Marinaro, Charlie Meck, Joe Humphries, and others.
There is so much here, and this is an episode you don’t want to miss. Enjoy!

Let’s face it, panfish, on the whole, are less glamorous than many of the other species we target with a fly rod. Catching a sunfish or crappie, to some, may not be as cool as trout or a tarpon. But for so many of us, we started fishing and maybe even fly fishing, down at the local pond catching bluegill, bass, crappie and the like with bait, a spinning rod or maybe even a fly rod. The fact is, targeting panfish can provide a super fun day on the water with a fly rod. I mean, a good size crappie crushing a top-water bug is a ton of fun. And panfish can prove to be a great species for introducing a friend to fly fishing.
Bart Lombardo is an expert in this space. He is a leading authority for both creating and tying patterns specifically for panfish. One pattern, The Triangle Bug, is a topwater bug and a killer pattern for bluegill, sunfish, and small bass. I am excited to report, Bart has an amazing book in the works, Panfish On The Fly, and you can look for that in early 2025.
In this chat, we sit down and get to know Bart a bit, talk tips and tactics for Panfish on the Fly and have a few laughs.

Luong Tam is yet another wonderful personality in the fly fishing industry. Whenever I see him, he always greets me with a warm smile and pleasant hello. I return the kind gesture and let out a bold, TENKARA TANUKI. That’s obviously not his name but it’s his company and his brand. He loves tenkara and he is a master tenkara rod designer.
A tanuki is a small, Japanese racoon dog and a cartoon of this tanuki is his mascot. Like his mascot, Luong has a playful spirit. Don’t let this confuse you though, his tenkara rods are tools of precision and excellence. Frank Burr, the Golden Trout Dude, says the Tenkara Tanuki rods are the finest tenkara rods in the world, including the ones made in Japan. That’s a bold statement.

Rollin Schuster and Augusto Russell of Cross Current Insurance came highly recommended. I have been very fortunate to be selective who I promote on the podcast. Seeing the team at Cross Current Insurance as regular supporters of The Fly Fishing Shows and as leaders in community and non-profit support was what caught my attention. Hearing recommendations from my guide friends about the quality of their insurance and as well as their service is what did it for me. I originally met Rollin through his daughter, Abbie Schuster, who runs Kissmet Outfitters, a guide and fly shop in Martha’s Vineyard, MA.
In this podcast, we get to know Rollin and Augusto, chat about the benefits of trip insurance and even find out about Augusto’s fishing origin story and how that fits in with a bamboo pole and a water buffalo. You won’t want to miss it. Stay tuned.

Maybe like you, Alaska was high on my list of dream destinations I still needed to do. After 25 years of fly fishing, I wondered why I still hadn’t made the time to make this trip happen. I have been so excited about recent trips to Iceland, various destinations in Canada, including my own lodge in Quebec, Canada, out west, and the tropics, I guess Alaska remained stuck on the ever increasing bucket list. Well, that changed when my buddy Tim Cammisa and I connected with Ryan Kocherhans and the crew from Alaska Remote Adventures at the Denver Fly Fishing Show last year. I also remembered having previously met Ryan at the Pleasanton Fly Fishing Show a few years back and we talked about doing a trip then. This time we were determined to make it happen and with Tim equally excited, we got a trip on the books.
On this podcast, Tim and I share some of our experiences of visiting Alaska for the first time. We dive into the five species of Salmon that run by the Alaskan Remote Adventures lodge on the Mulchatna River, a tributary in the Nushagak River. We discuss the seasons and when best to visit Alaska, especially in this area, for the specific species of fish you would want to target. Finally, we dive into the tackle and flies to set you up for a successful trip to Alaska.

On this episode of the Fly Fishing Journeys podcast, we have a very special guest, Simon Gawesworth. Simon is the Education and Engagement Manager for Far Bank, the parent company to Rio Products, Sage, Redington and Fly Water Travel. Simon is acknowledged as one of the world’s leading authorities on spey casting and has taught and demonstrated spey casting around the world. But his expertise doesn’t stop there. In this podcast we cover Simon’s beginning outside of London, England when his father, a fly fishing instructor himself, taught him how to fly fish. As Simon worked with Rio Products in product development for many years, I wanted to dive into different types of fly lines, and we talked about the process of making a fly line. We finalize on a wonderful deep dive discussion on the make up of both mono and fluorocarbon leader and tippet material. Simon’s insights here are invaluable for any fly angler.
Helping me on the podcast is my Phil Rowley. Phil, who was also born in England, has a nice friendship with both Simon and Rio so was kind enough to sit in and add value to this episode.

Lou Zambello hails from the great state of Maine and runs a program called Mainely Fly Fishing. His expertise travels far beyond the borders of Maine though. Episode SummaryWelcome to Part-Two of the Derek Bird podcast. If you haven’t listened to Part-One yet, I highly encourage you to head over there first. Derek dives into growing up and fishing in British Columbia and paints a beautiful picture of the Canadian Rockies. Derek is a poet with his words. I could just feel the nostalgia and sense those special times with his brother Chris Bird. It was reminiscent of Norman and Paul Maclean from A River Runs Through It.
Derek is a founding Editor of Fly Fusion Magazine and writes the Editor’s column called “Stream Lines” for each issue. He’s a Co-Host for the Fly Fusion TV series as well as the Producer responsible for content acquisition for the International Fly Fishing Film Festival, also known as, IF4, which is seen around the world. Additionally, he’s the author of a new book called, Last Summer On The Sage, that April Volkey says is a riveting tale, full of suspense that had me on the edge of my seat, anxiously turning each page to see what was around the next river bend. In this Part-Two episode we dive behind the scenes of the making of a fly fishing magazine. Being in media, I am inspired by both the creation of a quality fly fishing magazine and the interesting people that make it. We close talking about his great new novel that is getting rave reviews, Last Summer On The Sage…Enjoy!

Episode Summary
I met Steve Day of Golden Trout Pack Trains at the Pleasanton, CA Fly Fishing Show. He said he led pack train trips into the Golden Trout Wilderness, in the Sequoia National Forest in California. I did a double take and said, “excuse me, come again…”. He explained how he packs clients in by horse with a pack of mules and sets up basecamp along the Kern River, 20 miles into the backcountry. How his clients dry fly fish for big rainbows in clear water up and down the river, right from basecamp. How it’s just a short horseback ride up the mountain to the mecca and the original strain of the Golden Trout in Volcano Creek and Golden Trout Creek. I could hardly stand it, couldn’t believe what I was hearing and proceed to make plans.
The trip did not disappoint. The horses and the pack train trip in was an amazing experience. The luxury camping right on the Kern River was a complete bonus as my mind was so fixed on the Golden Trout that I didn’t have expectations for this part of the trip but wow, it was amazing. Clearly heading up to Volcano Creek and Golden Trout Creek and seeing and yes, finally catching my first Golden was a magical moment and highlight not only of this trip but my fly fishing experiences.
On this podcast we hear from the wrangler angler himself, Steve Day and a couple of his amazing horse packers and trip leaders, Savanna Summers & Mari Stusser.
Thanks to Douglas Outdoors for sponsoring this episode and our entire trip across country. The Douglas Upstream 6-piece, 3 weight was a joy to cast and a blast to fish. It’s the perfect rod for backcountry fishing and it’s now my go-to light action rod.

Pat Dorsey is considered by many as one of the leading knowledge sources in fly fishing today. As a professional guide, author, and speaker he travels around the country and beyond fishing and teaching the sport he loves. As a partner and guide at the Blue Quill Angler he bases out of Evergreen, CO. He has authored four fly fishing books: Fly Fishing Tailwaters, Tying & Fishing Tailwater Flies, Colorado Guide Flies & Fly Fishing Guide to the South Platte River.
In this podcast Pat offers us Five Winter Fly Fishing Tips. Before we get to the tips, we review the many diverse sections of the South Platte River including Cheeseman Canyon, below the Spinney Reservoir, Eleven Mile Canyon and Deckers.
As the South Platte River is a tailwater, we talk about how to fish a tailwater and what similarities you can find between the South Platte and other tailwaters.
Finally, we discussed some guide style flies, especially midges, as they are particularly important in the winter. We hone in on your equipment set up for fishing these tiny flies.

Episode Summary Everyone loves dry flies and when you match that up with big Cicadas, hungry Rainbows and miles and miles of ‘S’ turns, cut banks and the beautiful Wyoming landscape, you’ve got Savery Creek. Along with my son and traveling buddy Tyler, we sat down with Brice Reid and Maddison Kopsa at Savery Creek Fishing.
Brice gives us the low down on how to fish big dry flies like a Cicada. Maddison breaks down other bugs to be prepared for, including several caddis fly patterns. We have lots of fun and plenty of laughs on this episode.

Episode Summary On this edition of the Fly-Fishing Journeys Podcast, we have a fun and lively conversation with Bob Shannon and Parker Wright of The Fly Rod Shop in Stowe, VT. We dial in on both the DIY and guided fishing opportunities in the beautiful landscapes of Northern Vermont.
They share how what would typically be a winter, ski destination has become a year-round destination with tons of outdoor activities available. Coincidentally, I went to college in the area and taught skiing at Stowe and Smugglers Notch, so the conversation brought back lots of nostalgic memories.
We had a spirited chat about the trout creel limits and to be clear, as of Jan 1 of this year, Vermont Fish and Wildlife has reduced the trout creel limits to 8 in rivers and streams and 6 in lakes and ponds. At the recording of this conversation, it was at 12. I want to commend Bob for the time he served on the VF&W board in both his balanced approach and his advocacy for lowering the total creel limits. I am just glad that Vermont finally decided to lower that number. A strong case could be made for further protections for the Brook Trout as a wild, native fish over the Rainbows and Browns that are both non-native and stocked.

It wasn’t long into my first trip to northern Iceland with Matti that I knew were going to be great friends. Matti has a great way about him that makes him fun to be around. But more than just fun, he’s an incredible guide and a true friend.
And along with all that, he put me on my first Atlantic Salmon, a dream come true.
