Irresistible Fiction Chapter One: The Subatomic Chronicles
Irresistible Fiction: Episodes 1 - 5
Veering drastically from the political programming of Occupy Radio, and Chaos Theory Radio, Getch, or David Geitgey Sierralupe, declares himself fictional. If you keep listening, you will find yourself becoming irresistibly fictional as well.
In the first chapter of Irresistible Fiction, spanning episodes 1-5, Getch takes you deep into the nothingness at the core of the atom. Along the way expect vague recriminations about Albert Einstein. Expect corporate pressure from the legal team of Orkin, Raptor, and Racket, International. But mostly expect bullshit -- unrepentant, multi-layered, multi-dimensional bullshit.
This is your chance to heed the call. Even though Getch is fictional, he needs your help. He's looking for his even more fictional friend, Norway Hansford.
Will you ignore this call for help, merely because it comes from somebody who doesn’t exist?
Are you the sort of person who discriminates against people who have the misfortune of being born fictional?
Test the limits of your perception, and possibly your compassion, with Irresistible Fiction, Chapter One: The Sub Atomic Chronicles.
Irresistible Fiction 5: Club Neutron
It’s a full moon Irresistible Fiction special, coming from a special place where the moonlight doesn’t shine. Getch makes some friends, and tries out the nightlife at Club Neutron.
Club Neutron, the last, best hope for some final chunk of matter, somewhere in the atom, turns out to be mostly illusions. Illusions, and maybe bad business decisions. While Getch talks quantum mechanics with Inga the bartender, the Incredible Quarks are on stage making things appear and disappear. With their magic act, the concept of anything solid in the universe survives on an Einsteinian technicality.
As Inga says: “It’s not a bad trick though. Everywhere you look isn’t there until you look there. You look somewhere else, and what was once there, stops being there anymore. It’s the Incredible Quarks. Always one step ahead of you.”

In which Getch’s dimension-hopping doppelganger visits an intergalactic quidditch match in order to point out that it just doesn’t matter. Orkin, Raptor, and Racket imposes its will. Plus, vague rumblings about Einstein letting us all down.

Irresistible Fiction 2: Utter Bullshit
Almost a century ago, scientists searched to find the smallest particle of matter in the microverse. Instead, they found puzzles and funhouse reflections. Deep down inside the atom, things got strange, and even Albert Einstein tried to sweep it all under the rug.
But that strangeness at the core of the atom sat under that metaphorical rug, and waited.
Every once and awhile, we lifted the corner of the rug and picked out little bits of quantum strangeness that suited our needs. But most of it, we avoided as improbable, waiting for another Einstein to sort it all out for us.
Bullshit, my friends, is on the rise, and reaching historic levels.
Across the multiverse, it appears that all of those little bits of quantum strangeness have reached critical mass.
The pent up quantum strangeness appears to have begun to release itself in historic, multi-cosmic waves of bullshit.
There has been a surge in first, and second term Trump presidencies across an infinite number of worlds. In a dark, and frightening swath of the unending abyss, Trump has seized power in America as a warrior king, leading literal packs of wolves from Wall Street.
The infrastructure in place, to protect against the build-up of bullshit is old and weak. In a frightening array of worlds, the bullshit flood is topping walls that have stood solid for centuries.
If Trump is President in your world, know that you are currently experiencing historic levels of bullshit. Unfortunately, we can’t say for sure when you can hope to reach peak bullshit. Until bullshit levels return to normal, please use common sense as much a possible.
Eventually, we are afraid, the whole multi-cosmos will be awash in bullshit.
Then, and only then, will we be able to come to terms with what scared Albert Einstein. But, that’s for another episode.
In the meantime, a little uncertainty will be good for us all.

Still trying to understand what’s happening with the former Occupy the Media Podcast. I’m not willing to believe we are witnessing actual interdimensional communication. So, I’m considering other reasons involving collusion, trickery, and mind-f*ckery.

Darcy Richardson is the author of more than a dozen books covering American political history. Richardson’s books on American history and politics — one of which earned an Outstanding Academic Title (OAT) from scholarly Choicemagazine in 2005 — were cited in Newsweek’s “What You Need to Read” section in July 2010. His most recent book, Bernie: A Lifelong Crusade Against Wall Street & Wealth, was published by Sevierville Publishing in December 2015.
Long active in third-party politics, Richardson has rubbed shoulders with some of the best-known political figures of the past three decades. In addition to managing one of the late Minnesota Senator Eugene J. McCarthy’s campaigns and serving as a senior advisor in another, Richardson ran for Pennsylvania Auditor General in 1980 and for the U.S. Senate eight years later on the Philadelphia-based Consumer Party ticket. In 2012, he offered himself as a protest candidate in several Democratic presidential primaries, briefly challenging Wall Street’s increasingly corrupt influence on the Democratic Party and the nation’s body politic.
A resident of Jacksonville, Richardson has been quoted in major publications such as the Wall Street Journal, theWashington Times and the Philadelphia Inquirer, and has written numerous articles for a wide range of publications. He has also been a guest on several nationally-syndicated radio talk shows, ranging from the progressive “Thom Hartmann Show” to Joseph Farah’s conservative “WorldNetDaily Radioactive” program.

Peter Kuznick is Professor of History at American University, and author of Beyond the Laboratory: Scientists As Political Activists in 1930s America, co-author with Akira Kimura of Rethinking the Atomic Bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki: Japanese and American Perspectives, co-author with Yuki Tanaka of Nuclear Power and Hiroshima: The Truth Behind the Peaceful Use of Nuclear Power, and co-editor with James Gilbert of Rethinking Cold War Culture. In 1995, he founded American University’s Nuclear Studies Institute, which he directs. In 2003, Kuznick organized a group of scholars, writers, artists, clergy, and activists to protest the Smithsonian’s celebratory display of the Enola Gay. He and filmmaker Oliver Stone co-authored the 12 part Showtime documentary film series and book both titled The Untold History of the United States. FBI Stings of Muslims Worsen Bigotry and Security

A study from 2014 showed that 99% of domestic terrorist plots in the US are aided in some way by the FBI; only 4 out of 400 were not FBI stings. And human rights groups found that the way the sting operations are conducted violate human rights. Sue Udry of Defending Dissent will speak about the ways these sting operations have been used to fuel hatred against Muslims. And to discuss the shooting and mass murder in Orlando, FL, Janaid Ahmad of Just International and Peace for Life speaks about the rise of homophobia and violence within Muslim communities because of Western influence and support for extremist sects such as the Wahhabis in Saudi Arabia.

Sue Udry is Executive Director of the Defending Dissent Foundation.
Sue won her high school’s “Best Citizen” award in 1978 and has been working to earn that title ever since. She played a leadership role in her campus peace group, and after grad school she began knocking on doors in neighborhoods around the country as a canvasser for SANE, the Committee for a Sane Nuclear Policy, now Peace Action. She has been the Executive Director of the Defending Dissent Foundation since 2008. Prior to joining DDF, she served as the executive director of the Chicago Committee to Defend the Bill of Rights and as an organizer for the Coalition for New Priorities and the Day Care Action Council of Illinois. She was the legislative coordinator for United for Peace and Justice, a coalition of over 1,600 groups opposing the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. She currently serves on the board of the National Coalition to Protect Civil Freedoms and the National Coalition to Protect Student Privacy, as well as the Advisory Board of the Charity and Security Network. She is a co-founder of the Montgomery County Civil Rights Coalition and treasurer of the D.C. chapter of the National Lawyers Guild.
Over a quarter of a century working for peace and social justice in Washington, DC, Illinois and Indiana, has taught Sue that the right to dissent is crucial to expanding democracy, promoting justice, and enlarging the global human rights perspective.
Janaid S. Ahmad is based in Lahore, Pakistan where he is the director of the Center for Global Dialogue. He has a Juris Doctor (law) degree from the College of William and Mary, Williamsburg, VA. He is currently a Ph.D candidate in the Department of Religious Studies at the University of Cape Town, South Africa, and is also a faculty member of the Faculty of Law and Policy, Lahore University of Management Sciences (LUMS), Pakistan. He served as president of the US-based National Muslim Law Students Association (NMLSA), and is on the board of the Muslim Peace Fellowship. He is a board member of Muslim Men against Domestic Abuse (MMADA). He served on the Executive Board of the Domestic Violence Resource Project. In the US, he worked with the National Interfaith Committee on Social Justice, and Amnesty International. In Pakistan, he worked with such groups as Educate Pakistan and AMAL Human Development Network. He continues to maintain an association with Positive Muslims, the Cape Town-based organization working on issues related to Muslims, HIV/AIDS and gender justice, a group with which he worked while he was in South Africa. His research interests include Islam in the public sphere, interfaith relations, globalization, and civil society, and has lectured and written extensively on these topics. He is currently working on a collaborative project with the International Islamic University – Islamabad (IIU-I) on globalization, Muslim societies and Islamic revivalism. Mr. Ahmed has been a long time human rights activist.

The TPP is What Plutocracy Looks Like

As President Obama completes his final term in office, his administration is working closely with Big Business and Big Finance to sneak the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) through Congress during the lame duck session after the November election. The TPP is an international agreement that was negotiated in secret with the help of hundreds of corporate advisers. If ratified, it will rig the political system even more to benefit multinational corporations at the expense of our sovereignty and our ability to protect our communities and the planet. Bill Waren of Friends of the Earth will join us to discuss the close ties between the financial industry and the office of the US Trade Representative and why it is critical that we stop the TPP. Gillian Locascio of the Washington Fair Trade Coalition will speak with us about how people are organizing to stop the TPP.

Bill Waren is a trade policy analyst for Friends of the Earth. He works to protect the environment from the negative impact of international trade and investment agreements. Bill contributes to the policy discussion about trade and environment issues as they arise in community forums, the U.S. congressional debate, the federal agency process, international negotiations, and litigation before international trade and investment tribunals. Prior to joining Friends of the Earth, Bill worked at the Forum on Democracy & Trade and its sister organization, the Harrison Institute for Public Law at Georgetown University. Earlier in his career, Bill served as federal affairs counsel for the National Conference of State Legislatures and as a staffer for the Illinois General Assembly. A native of rural, downstate Illinois, Bill is a graduate of the University of Illinois and Duke Law School.
Gillian Locascio is the director for the Washington Fair Trade Coalition, a group of 66 labor, faith, environmental, student, public health, social justice organizations, fair trade businesses and cooperatives in Washington State that are committed to creating a fair, balanced, and sustainable global trading system. Prior to joining the coalition, she worked extensively in the United States and Latin America as a community health and human rights advocate, where she watched both CAFTA and the Panama Free Trade agreement go into effect.

Escalating the Resistance to Fossil Fuels

May has been a month of escalated resistance to fossil fuel industries and a call for a rapid transition to clean renewable sources of energy. The month began with Break Free: two weeks of direct action targeting coal, oil and gas around the world. That was followed by a week of action called the Rubber Stamp Rebellion protesting the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) for its approval of new fossil fuel infrastructure without adequate consideration of the impacts new projects will have on the health and safety of communities, harm to the environment or worsening of the climate crisis. We speak with three advocates who are working to stop dangerous fossil fuel projects.

Courtney Williams is vice president of Safe Energy Rights Group. She brings her scientific expertise to issues involving the health impacts of energy infrastructure. Courtney holds a B.S. in Molecular Biochemistry and Biophysics from Yale University and a PhD in Molecular Biology from Princeton University. She completed her post-doctoral training in biological engineering at MIT before transitioning into industry. She is currently a cancer researcher at a biopharmaceutical company. Courtney brings over a decade of experience researching cancer and the molecular mechanisms of disease to parse the emerging data on the health and environmental impacts of shale gas development. She has worked closely with local governments to educate them on the public health issues surrounding natural gas infrastructure.

Linda Reik is a biochemist, a mother and a resident of Sullivan County in New York. She is on the board of directors of the Sullivan Alliance for Sustainable Development and she is a member of Catskill Citizens for Safe Energy. Linda has been involved in the work to stop pipelines and gas infrastructure mainly in PA, NY and NJ and she participated in the Rubber Stamp Rebellion in Washington, DC.
Steve Norris is a father, grandfather and great grandfather who lives in the Smokey Mountains of North Carolina. He’s a retired teacher, builder, farmer, and a full time activist working to end climate change and promote environmental, social and economic justice. His primary focus recently has been on changing the priorities of the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission as the country transitions to renewable energy, and upon challenging Duke Energy, a fossil fuel monster which is the largest emitter of green house gases in the country.lives He is a co-founder of Beyond Extreme Energy.

Patrick Walker is a veteran anti-fracking and Occupy Scranton, PA activist, currently a co-founding member of Revolt Against Plutocracy (RAP) and co-creator of RAP’s Bernie or Bust pledge, which spawned the nationwide Bernie or Bust movement. He is delighted to announce that by the time of his Clearing the FOG interview, the pledge will almost certainly have garnered its 100,000 th signature.
Patrick considers the anti-fracking movement his ideal, if belated, way to break into political activism, since the undemocratic conquest of Pennsylvania, his native state, by the fracking industry was based on precisely the rampant corruption of politicians by corporate money now vitiating U.S. (and global) politics. His whirlwind years as a PA anti-fracking activist (2010-12) included his family’s central role in the 2010 PA Homeland Security scandal, a successful protest he organized against former U.S. Homeland Security chief turned fracking shill Tom Ridge, a brief stint as Harrisburg spokesperson for Damascus Citizens for Sustainability, and his wife’s appearance in film maker Josh Fox’s anti-fracking movie Gasland 2.
Patrick’s focus on the underlying problem of political corruption naturally interested him in the Occupy movement, where he unsuccessfully tried to spread his conviction that Occupy should adopt the Green Party as its political arm. Believing no useful transformation of U.S. politics will come unless voters show zero tolerance for candidates corrupted by corporate money, Patrick, along with Victor Tiffany, eagerly seized on Bernie Sanders’ insurgent candidacy to create Revolt Against Plutocracy, strategic hub of the Bernie or Bust movement. He’s excited that Bernie or Bust recently partnered with Popular Resistance, hoping to create the potent fusion between movement activism and insurgent electoral politics he sought to create with Occupy.
A University of Scranton graduate, with bachelor’s degrees in English lit and philosophy, Patrick now resides in the Buffalo, NY area with his wife, daughter, and three Sheltie dogs. His activist writings haveappeared in OpEdNews, Nation of Change, CounterPunch, and Dissident Voice.
Debbie Lusignan is a vlogger at The Sane Progressive. She launched this project in 2015 to put out an alternative narrative to the corporate media lies and manipulations of the American people.
JackRabbit Pollack is a founding member of Interoccupy.net – a communications working group of Occupy Wall Street that continues to operate in limited capacity. In 2012 he participated in the grassroots disaster relief to hurricane Sandy known as Occupy Sandy. He has provided logistical support for groups fighting for racial justice such as SURJ, Ferguson Action, and Movement for Black Lives.
In April of 2015 he began work as one of the core members of People for Bernie with whom he worked through July.
Along with partner Shana East, Jackrabbit started The People’s Revolution, but put the project on hold to begin Illinois for Bernie with Ms. East. Illinois for Bernie is a grassroots group autonomously supporting Bernie Sanders’ primary run for the presidency.
Most recently, Jackrabbit and Ms. East have returned to organizing as the People’s Revolution to convene a gathering in Philadelphia the weekend before the DNC called the People’s Convention – an attempt to organize the insurgent energy surrounding the presidential election into a cohesive force for progressive change.

Joe Guinan is a Senior Fellow at The Democracy Collaborative and Executive Director of the Next System Project. Having first worked with Gar Alperovitz and The Democracy Collaborative ten years earlier, he returned in 2012 to help design, launch and implement the Collaborative’s work on alternative political-economic systems. A former journalist, he was previously a program director at the Aspen Institute and a fellow at the German Marshall Fund of the United States and has served as a consultant to the William & Flora Hewlett Foundation. With a decade of experience in international economics, trade policy, global agriculture, and food security, he has been a frequently cited expert on globalization and economic development in major news media, including the New York Times, Financial Times, Wall Street Journal, Newsweek, BBC News, and Al-Jazeera. Born in England with dual Irish and British citizenship, he grew up in British labor movement circles and was educated at Balliol College, Oxford. He writes regularly for progressive outlets in the UK, including open Democracy and the journal Renewal, and is a member of the editorial collective of New Left Project.
Dana Brown joined the Democracy Collaborative in September 2015 for the launch of the Next System Teach-Ins program. She is an activist, popular educator and human rights advocate that has worked throughout the US, Latin America and the Middle East supporting communities organized in resistance to neoliberal economic reforms and military intervention. A board member of Peace Brigades International, she maintains a foot in international solidarity, assisting projects to protect human rights defenders from Colombia to Kenya, while thrilled to be based in the US working to change our political economy for the benefit of the 99%.
Dana holds a B.A. in Sociology from Cornell University and a Masters in International Relations and Peace Studies from the Universidad del Salvador (Argentina). She is a founding member of Witness Against Torture, a movement to shut down the detention center at Guantanamo Bay and end the use of torture and indefinite detention at all US-run facilities.
She is delighted to be the first Mississippian and third tango dancer to join the Democracy Collaborative staff.

This episode takes a look at that elusive idea of defining what art is. Where does that spark of creativity come from? What drives human beings to take an idea from our mind and create something in the physical world? As a starting point for this conversation we take a look back throughout history to see what people far smarter than all of us have to say about art and the role of art within human society.
At a very basic level, any art (both good and bad) is just the product of a human being expressing something that first occurred in the mind. In fact, the majority of art is never put on display in a gallery. The society in which we live defines the value of art for us and determines what is displayed in a gallery. However, maybe the 'value' of art should be a personal definition.
We then hear from a working artist on the dilemma between making a living from art, but also being able to artistically develop and explore with that fear in the back of your mind that 'no one will buy this'. How exactly does tying commerce (capitalism) to art affect the art? And, on the other end of that question, how does it affect the definition of art in the mind of the consumer of that art?
In previous generations, art was produced and boundaries were pushed due to a societal circumstance that we no longer experience - boredom. When we have the ability to entertain ourselves 24/7, we are never bored. Without the presence of boredom, we are never forced to entertain ourselves. To create something from nothing. There is current scientific data that shows human creativity is on the decline (specifically in the USA) due to our lack of being bored. The good news is that the solution is simple and fun. We all just have to play and explore a lot more. Rhyme intended.

Building Power for Worker Rights

We speak with Professor Richard Wolff of Democracy at Work and Mike Somers, President of CWA Local 2100. Nearly 40,000 CWA members have been on strike against Verizon since April 13. They are calling for a national day of action on May 5.

Richard D. Wolff is the co-founder of Democracy at Work. He is professor of economics emeritus at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, where he taught economics from 1973 to 2008. He is currently a visiting professor in the Graduate Program in International Affairs of the New School University, New York City. He also teaches classes regularly at the Brecht Forum in Manhattan. Earlier he taught economics at Yale University (1967-1969) and at the City College of the City University of New York (1969-1973). Talk Nation Radio: Peter Enns on How Public Punitiveness Led to Mass Incarceration
Peter Enns is Associate Professor in the Department of Government and Executive Director of the Roper Center for Public Opinion Research at Cornell University. He is also team leader of the Institute for Social Science theme project on the Causes, Consequences, and Future of Mass Incarceration in the United States.
His research focuses on public opinion, representation, mass incarceration, and inequality. Peter also teaches courses on quantitative research methods. Peter’s new book, Incarceration Nation, (Cambridge University Press) explains why the public became more punitive in the 1960s, 70s, 80, and 90s, and how this increasing punitiveness led to the rise of mass incarceration in the United States.
Peter received his Ph.D. in political science from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (2007) and his undergraduate degree from Colorado College (1998). Prior to graduate school, he taught high school Spanish for three years in Baltimore, MD, through Teach For America. Yasmin Yablonko is a 23 year-old Israeli conscientious Objector from Jaffa. Today she is the coordinator of Mesarvot, a newly established network of Israeli organizations supporting refusal and opposing the occupation. The network helps elevate the voices of young people refusing military service, offering them capacity building, assisting with media work and helping them organize.Yasmin currently studies Humanities and Arts in the Tel Aviv University.
Khaled Farrag is a 34 year old Palestinian Druze conscientious objector from Rama village in the Upper Galilee. In 1999, after moving to Jerusalem, Khaled refused to serve in the army and was sentenced to two months in military prison. Khaled was of the founders of Urfod, a movement that calls for ending compulsory military service imposed on Druze men at the age of 18, and reconnecting Druze with their Palestinian and Arab identity as it was throughout the history.
Khaled law at the Hebrew University in Jerusalem, established and run a preparatory school for university admission in East Jerusalem and co-found Grassroots Jerusalem, a Palestinian NGO working on empowering communities in East Jerusalem.
Ramah Kudaimi is the membership and outreach coordinator for End the Occupation. She serves on the board of the Washington Peace Center. She has been an activist with other grassroots organizations including CODEPINK: Women for Peace and the Arab American Action Network. She has a Master of Arts degree in Conflict Resolution from Georgetown University and a B.S. in Journalism from Northwestern University. Her writing has been published by Al Jazeera English, The Progressive, Truthout, and more.
Chip Gibbons is a long time supporter of the Boycotts, Divestment, and Sanctions Movement. In 2014, he helped form Keep Free Speech in the Free State to battle an anti-BDS bill in Maryland and more recently served as legislative Chair of Freedom to Boycott-Maryland. As a freelance journalist, his work has frequently covered the struggle for Palestinian human rights, as well as attempts to suppress the it.
Gibbons is a Legal Fellow at the Bill of Rights Defense Committee and Defending Dissent Foundation, where he heads the Activism is Not Terrorism Campaign, which focuses on protecting the rights of activists with an emphasis on the increased use of anti-terrorism legislation against non-violent activists and terrorism as a pretext for the surveillance of First Amendment protected activities. Additionally, he is a freelance writer and journalist whose work has appeared at Truthout, Counterpunch, and the Dissent NewsWire.

After 1700 years, the Catholic Church is turning against the idea that there can be a "just war." We speak with John Dear.John Dear is an internationally recognized voice for peace and nonviolence. A priest, pastor, retreat leader, and author, he served for years as the director of the Fellowship of Reconciliation, the largest interfaith peace organization in the U.S. After September 11, 2001, he was a Red Cross coordinator of chaplains at the Family Assistance Center in New York, and counseled thousands of relatives and rescue workers. John has traveled the war zones of the world, been arrested some 75 times for peace, led Nobel Peace prize winners to Iraq, recently visited Afghanistan, given thousands of lectures on peace across the U.S., and served as a pastor of several churches in New Mexico.

Panama Papers’ and the Shadow World of Finance

The release of the ‘Panama Papers’ reveal the secret world of shell companies used by the rich to hide their wealth and avoid paying taxes on it. While it appears that the release of information was intended as a tool to demonize Russian President Vladimir Putin, it has backfired and instead led to a probing of who in the US is involved in this type of scheme. McClatchy News is publishing investigative pieces revealing the same activity taking place in states such as Nevada and Wyoming. The list of people involved connects directly to government figures such as US Secretary of Commerce Penny Pritzker. It has also led to massive upheaval in Iceland where protesters are calling for the resignation of the government and new elections. We explore what’s going on with James Henry of the Tax Justice Network and Chuck Collins of the Institute for Policy Studies.

In 1995, he co-founded United for a Fair Economy (UFE) to raise the profile of the inequality issue and support popular education and organizing efforts to address inequality. He was Executive Director of UFE from 1995-2001 and Program Director until 2005.

Greg Mello is Executive Director and a co-founder of the Los Alamos Study Group and has led its varied activities since 1992, including policy research, environmental analysis, congressional education and lobbying, community organizing, litigation (FOIA, civil rights, NEPA), advertising, and the nuts and bolts of funding and running a small nonprofit. From time to time he has served as a consulting analyst, writer, and spokesperson for other nuclear policy organizations. Greg was educated as a systems engineer with a broad scientific background (Harvey Mudd College, 1971, with distinction) and as a regional planner with emphases in environmental planning and regional economics (Harvard, 1975, with distinction, HUD Fellow in Urban Studies). During the early 1980s Greg was a high school science and math teacher, then a hazardous waste inspector and statewide hazardous materials incident commander, and in the late 1980s a supervising hydrogeologist, for the New Mexico Environment Department. In 1984 Greg led the first regulatory enforcement at Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL). In the early 1990s Greg was a consulting hydrologist in parallel with the early Study Group, with cleanup projects in New Mexico and California. In 2002, Greg was a Visiting Research Fellow at Princeton University’s Program on Science and Global Security. Greg’s research, analysis, and opinions have been published in the New York Times, Washington Post, The Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists, Issues in Science and Technology, in the New Mexico press, and elsewhere. He has been interviewed thousands of times by U.S. and international news media (print, radio, and television). Greg’s research has been the source or impetus of many of these media articles and programs. In addition to speaking at hundreds of public meetings and events in New Mexico, Greg has been a guest speaker at several international disarmament events here and abroad.
Lillyanne Daigle joined the Global Zero team in October 2014 as a U.S. field organizer. In her role, she will be spearheading Global Zero’s volunteer recruitment and mobilization across the United States. Lilly graduated from Warren Wilson College with a degree in Global Studies focusing on social justice and a minor in Peace and Conflict Studies. She is passionate about empowering individuals to fight for issues they care about. Before her time at Global Zero, Lilly organized with several grassroots campaigns and completed the Green Corps year-long training program in field organizing.
John Qua joined the Global Zero team in January 2016 as a U.S. field organizer. He is committed to fighting for a more equitable world, and empowering people to make change through political organizing and community building. In his role, he will be spearheading Global Zero’s volunteer recruitment and mobilization across the United States. John graduated from Brown University with a degree in International Relations focusing on the environment. Michael Mann is Distinguished Professor of Atmospheric Science at Penn State University, with joint appointments in the Department of Geosciences and the Earth and Environmental Systems Institute (EESI). He is also director of the Penn StateEarth System Science Center (ESSC).
Dr. Mann received his undergraduate degrees in Physics and Applied Math from the University of California at Berkeley, an M.S. degree in Physics from Yale University, and a Ph.D. in Geology & Geophysics from Yale University. His research involves the use of theoretical models and observational data to better understand Earth’s climate system.
Dr. Mann was a Lead Author on the Observed Climate Variability and Change chapter of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) Third Scientific Assessment Report in 2001 and was organizing committee chair for the National Academy of Sciences Frontiers of Science in 2003. He has received a number of honors and awards including NOAA’s outstanding publication award in 2002 and selection by Scientific American as one of the fifty leading visionaries in science and technology in 2002. He contributed, with other IPCC authors, to the award of the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize. He was awarded the Hans Oeschger Medal of the European Geosciences Union in 2012 and was awarded the National Conservation Achievement Award for science by the National Wildlife Federation in 2013. He made Bloomberg News’ list of fifty most influential people in 2013. In 2014, he was named Highly Cited Researcher by the Institute for Scientific Information (ISI) and received the Friend of the Planet Award from the National Center for Science Education. He is a Fellow of the American Geophysical Union, the American Meteorological Society, and the American Association for the Advancement of Science.
Dr. Mann is author of more than 190 peer-reviewed and edited publications, and has published two books including Dire Predictions: Understanding Climate Change and The Hockey Stick and the Climate Wars: Dispatches from the Front Lines. He is also a co-founder of the award-winning science website RealClimate.org.
Mark Z. Jacobson is a Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Stanford University where he is also Director of the Atmosphere/Energy Program. He is a Senior Fellow for both the Woods Institute for the Environment and the Precourt Institute for Energy. He received a B.S. in Engineering, a B.A. in Economics and an M.S. in Environmental Engineering from Stanford University. He received an M.S. and a PhD in Atmospheric Science from UCLA.
The main goal of Jacobson’s research is to understand better severe atmospheric problems, such as air pollution and global warming, and develop and analyze large-scale clean-renewable energy solutions to them.
To address this goal, he has developed and applied three-dimensional atmosphere-biosphere-ocean computer models and solvers to simulate air pollution, weather, climate, and renewable energy. In 1993-4, he developed the world’s first computer model to treat the mutual feedback to weather and climate of both air pollution gases and particles, and in 2001, the first coupled air-pollution-weather-climate model to telescope from the global to urban scale.
In 2000, he applied this model to discover that black carbon, the main component of soot pollution particles, might be the second-leading cause of global warming in terms of radiative forcing, after carbon dioxide. This and subsequent papers provided the original scientific basis for several laws and regulations on black carbon emission controls worldwide. His findings that carbon dioxide domes over cities and carbon dioxide buildup since preindustrial times have enhanced air pollution mortality through its feedback to particles and ozone served as a scientific basis for the Environmental Protection Agency’s 2009 approval of the first U.S. regulation of carbon dioxide (the California waiver).
With respect to solvers, in 1993, he developed the world’s fastest ordinary differential equation solver in a three-dimensional model for a given level of accuracy. He subsequently developed solvers for cloud and aerosol coagulation, breakup, condensation/evaporation, freezing, dissolution, chemical equilibrium, and lightning; air-sea exchange; ocean chemistry; greenhouse gas absorption; and surface processes.
With respect to energy, in 2001 he published a paper in Science examining the ability of the U.S. to convert a large fraction of its energy to wind power. In 2005, his group developed the first world wind map based on data alone. His students subsequently published papers on reducing the variability of wind energy by interconnecting wind farms; on integrating solar, wind, geothermal, and hydroelectric power into the grid; and on wave power.
In 2009, he coauthored a plan, featured on the cover of Scientific American, to power the world for all purposes with wind, water, and sunlight (WWS). In 2010, he appeared in a TED debate rated as the sixth all-time science and technology TED talk. In 2011, he cofounded The Solutions Project, a group that combines science, business, and culture to develop and implement science based clean-energy plans for states and countries. In 2013, his group developed individual WWS energy plans for each of the 50 United States.
To date, he has published two textbooks of two editions each and ~150 peer-reviewed journal articles. He has testified three times for the U.S. Congress. Nearly a thousand researchers have used computer models he has developed. In 2005, he received the American Meteorological Society Henry G. Houghton Award for “significant contributions to modeling aerosol chemistry and to understanding the role of soot and other carbon particles on climate.” In 2013, he received an American Geophysical Union Ascent Award for “his dominating role in the development of models to identify the role of black carbon in climate change” and the Global Green Policy Design Award for the “design of analysis and policy framework to envision a future powered by renewable energy.” In 2016, he received a Cozzarelli Prize from the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences for “outstanding scientific excellence and originality” in his paper on a solution to the U.S. grid reliability problem with 100% penetration of wind, water, and solar power for all purposes. He has also served on the Energy Efficiency and Renewables advisory committee to the U.S. Secretary of Energy and was invited to talk about his world and U.S. clean-energy plans on the Late Show with David Letterman.

Farmworkers Fight for Food and Job Justice

Farm workers in the United States and Mexico are uniting to protest working conditions. From March 17 to 20, workers marched North in Mexico and South in the United States to meet at the border, at Playas de Tijuana. They are commemorating a march and strike one year ago and they are calling for the right to organize and demand fair wages, overtime pay and more. We speak with Rosalinda Guillen and Edgar Franks of Food Justice.

Rosalinda Guillen is a widely recognized farm worker and rural justice leader. The oldest of eight she was born in Texas and spent her first decade in Coahuila Mexico. Her family emigrated to LaConner, Washington in 1960 and she began working as a farm worker in the fields in Skagit County at the age of ten. Ms. Guillen has worked within the labor movement with Caesar Chavez’s United Farm Workers of America and has represented farm workers in ongoing dialogues of immigration issues, labor rights, trade agreements, and strengthening the food sovereignty movement. She works to build a broader base of support for rural communities and sustainable agriculture policies that ensure equity and healthy communities for farm workers.
Edgar Franks lives in Bellingham, WA. He serves as the Civic Engagement Program Coordinator at Community to Community Development, working to engage supporters and develop a strategy that ensures the needs of the Farm Worker community are represented. Community to Community works on issues of Food Sovereignty through the lens of Farm Workers, with the goal of creating a politically conscious inter-sectional base that is fighting to create a local solidarity economy. Edgar currently represents Community to Community on the National Planning Committee for the US Social Forum and on the US Food Sovereignty Alliance. He is also on the National Leadership Team of Move to Amend.

Our notional national debt levels are the proof.
