Divorce can be expensive. We hear most often about the mega-divorces with seven figure settlements or the juicy Hollywood divorces because there is drama, but that is not the reality for the majority of divorcing couples. The reality is that most couples have far less means and resources at their disposal. The good news is that there are resources.

No matter how amicable a divorce may be, there is still stress. Add some conflict and the stress can go off the charts. Unfortunately, sometimes people can turn to destructive means for stress management. What if there was another way to cope? Well, there is. The power of meditation is amazingly effective and it can even help with post-divorce growth.

Limited sometimes means lesser, but not always. A growing trend in the divorce industry is in limited scope representation is actually providing divorcing couples different and sometimes more rich experience where they engage an attorney in critical points of their divorce, but handle much of the details themselves. This is especially popular when a budget is substantially constrained.
Join us for a discussion with Sandra Crawford for Law Crawford P.C. on the merits and benefits of limited scope representation.
Also joining the discussion are Michele Traina from The Divorce Diaries and Hirsch Serman, MBA, CPA from Lifecycle Financial.
About Sandra Crawford
For the past 29 years Sandra has dedicated her legal practice to educating and leading clients to the clearest path to resolution of their unique legal issues. She helps distressed families and partnerships move out of conflict using the most appropriate legal dispute resolution model, be that: the Collaborative Practice, mediation, limited scope representation or litigation. As legal disputes and status adjustments (like dissolutions of marriages or partnerships) can be costly in terms of money, time lost, and emotional stress, it is critical for people facing such life changing events to be educated about and understand clearly their legal options and the various paths to resolution available before proceeding.
Sandra received her undergraduate degree from DePaul University in 1984 and her Juris Doctorate from the John Marshall Law School in 1989. She has been a practicing mediator since 1994 and was among the first attorneys in Illinois to be trained in the Collaborative Law model of dispute resolution when the model was introduced here in 2001. Sandra’s areas of concentration are Family Law, Mediation, and Real Estate She works throughout Cook and the surrounding counties.
Sandra has served on the nonprofit board of directors of the Collaborative Law Institute of Illinois, where she has held the office of President. She serves on the Board of Directors for the Illinois Bar Foundation, which administers grants and funding for legal services agencies. She was a two term member of the Illinois State Bar Association Assembly and Chair of the ISBA’s Women in the Law Committee. Sandra has been repeatedly nominated by her peers, evaluated and selected as an Illinois Super Lawyer – a group which includes only five percent of all the attorneys in her jurisdiction.

About Michele Traina
Michele is a performer and educator with over 15 years of onstage and offstage experience in using performance to help people, heal, grow, and learn. She earned a Theatre Degree from Adelphi University in 2003 and toured throughout the country for 5 years performing in various musicals and children's theatre productions and training at Upright Citizens Brigade. Michele earned a Master's in Educational Theatre from NYU in 2009, she was a teacher in Trenton for 3 years where she developed a performing arts program for urban youth in an alternative charter school. The school was shut down by NJ in 2012 and Michele took some time off to enjoy my newborn daughter Grace. Shortly after she started my own company Propbox Players designed to engage, excite, and educate using theatre for the youngest thespians. Geared towards infant to early childhood, Michele reshaped Propbox Players to be one of the only theatre companies that specializes in inclusion performances. This was inspired by my daughter's developmental delays and how cognitive development is enhanced through role play and movement. Propbox Players performances are interactive comedic retellings of fairy tales and original concepts. In going through a divorce, she took a theatre teacher position in Hoboken Public School district and earned a supervisor and principal certification in the state of New Jersey. As an educator, Michele has built relationships and collaborations with Broadway Licensing, McCarter Theatre, The State Theater, and multiple colleges that connected my students to artistic and academic opportunities. Recently Michele transitioned back to performing full time because of the success Divorce Diaries has had and opportunities to travel with the show throughout the country. Divorce Diaries is performed monthly in NYC and NJ and has been performed in Las Vegas, Chicago, Nashville, Huntsville, Birmingham, Naples, and Albany to name a few. It follows my post-divorce journey as a single mom teaching kids with special needs and dating men with special needs. The success of Divorce Diaries and Propbox Players offers with school districts and libraries showed me that it was time to leave a fulltime position as an educator for a school district and focus on my brands under my name. Michele is a performer and educator that uses humor to heal, grow, learn, and inspire one to live its best life.

About Leslie Glazier
A lifelong Chicagoland resident, few Realtors know the city and its neighborhoods better than Leslie Glazier. Her in-depth understanding of the local real estate market has made her one of Chicago’s top brokers, and she is known for her uncanny ability to connect with her client’s vision and their needs.
To Leslie, every client is a partner in every sense of the word, working together to achieve the ultimate goal. Whether they are selling or buying, she always puts herself in the client’s shoes and does her best to ensure a happy, positive, and stress-free experience.
Leslie has been a Chicago Realtor for over 17 years. She started her career in luxury leasing, helping visiting celebrities find temporary housing while working in Chicago. Still, her love for real estate goes much deeper.
Growing up, her parents would move and renovate their family home, only to sell a few years later. Carrying on the family tradition, Leslie now has renovated several such homes as well. She currently lives in an 1890’s three-flat that she and her husband remodeled into a single-family home, which has been featured in a multitude of publications, on Playboy.com, and in commercials.
Leslie is a certified relocation agent, a Certified Divorce Real Estate Expert (CDRE and RCS-D), and a skilled negotiator and an accredited home stager with a passion for design and architecture. Over the course of her career, she has sold over $100 million in real estate volume, applying a winning combining innovative marketing techniques and first-hand experience with some of the city’s most vibrant neighborhoods.
Having lived in some of the city’s most exciting and vibrant neighborhoods, including the Gold Coast, Lakeview, Lincoln Park, and even Glencoe and Evanston on the North Shore, Leslie knows the Chicago real estate market at a cellular level. Markets aside, however, it’s all about the people. There is no greater honor to her than to be a part of a client’s journey into the next phase of their life.
Whether you are seeking an investment property, are a transitioning empty-nester, or a first-time homeowner, Leslie will work tirelessly on your behalf.
When she’s not showing a home, closing a deal, or giving advice based on the “gut” renovations she’s done on her own homes and investment properties, you might find Leslie trying out a new recipe (ask her about her Thermomix), doing Pilates, or practicing for a ballroom dance competition. She currently lives in Lincoln Park with her husband, two of her kids, and two dogs.

A common view of divorce is one of animosity. Two people duking it out in bare-knuckled conflict to win. While this can sometimes be the case, it does not need to be. In fact, a bit of civility injected into the process can often help with better outcomes and a better relationship post-divorce.

Everyone talks about the emotion and stress of divorce, but not enough is said about the logistical and administrative challenges of divorce. Even in a fairly straightforward divorce, an extensive amount of paperwork and documents are created. There are a multitude of ways to approach these differences to determine the best way to split. These range from highly contested litigation to more amicable methods such as mediation or collaborative divorce. The key is knowing your options.

The truth, however, is that the number of divorces has been below 50% for some time and it continues to drop. What does this mean, however, to the future of marriage and divorce?

Divorce can damage a parent-child relationship. Decisions made and behaviors exhibited during and after the split sometimes creates a chasm of trust and disconnection that can be hard to overcome. Reunification Counseling has emerged as a means of focusing therapy and effort into bridging these gaps and healing the family.

There is a saying that you can divorce your spouse, but you cannot divorce your kids. In short, you will need to interact with your ex-spouse well past the signing of the divorce decree. For some this means a nurturing co-parenting relationship. For others, this can represent a means to continue a dysfunctional relationship. In this case, the children become a weapon with which to inflict harm. While undoubtedly bad for the ex-spouses, this can also cause lasting damage to the children involved.

About Lynda
LeBlanc & Mulholland, LLC - http://leblancmulholland.com/
As a Crown Point family law attorney, Lynda represents many men and women across the spectrum of life in Lake County and Porter County.
She graduated from Saint Mary's College in Notre Dame, Indiana in 2004 with a BBA and a concentration in accounting and a minor in mathematics. She then attended Michigan State University College of Law, and was one of the first members of the school's Alternative Dispute Resolution Society and later became the President of the ADR Society. During this time, she externed at the Legal Services of South Central Michigan, and continued to work the after my externship ended. she also externed for the Honorable Kathleen A. Feeney in the 17th Judicial Circuit Court in Grand Rapids, Michigan. In 2007, she graduated from MSU College of Law with a Concentration in Family Law and the Child and Family Advocacy Certificate.
After passing the Indiana Bar in 2007, she joined the law firm of Cohen, Kelly, Olson, DeHaan & Richter, LLC as an associate attorney. she treasures my time spent being mentored by Attorney Stephen B. Cohen and his assistant Chris. While there, she learned what it meant to be a counselor at law (the important stuff they don't teach you in law school).
She wanted to focus more on family law matters, and in 2010 she joined the Law Offices of Julie R. Glade, RN, JD. During her year at that office, she dealt with a vast variety of family law issues.
In 2011, she made the decision that it was time to (as they say) hang her own shingle, and started the Law Office of Lynda H. LeBlanc.

LeBlanc.

Although it is dropping, the rate of divorce is still well into the double digits. The cost of divorce us not only considerable to the couple, but costly to municipalities and local governments. As a result, some law makers are floating changes to the process that would introduce rules and waiting periods in an attempt to positively impact couples considering divorce. Is this the right way to go?

As of August of this year, student debt reached the staggering figure if $1.5 trillion. This staggering number affects over 44 million Americans. It is a system fraught with confusing rules and regulations that make just determining the best payback options a Herculean task. It is a debt that you cannot wipe clean through tools like bankruptcy. So, what then happens when student debt becomes part of the consideration for divorce.

Normal is a relative term, but in every society and culture there are generally traditional expectations of family and relationships. This is, however, not a reflection of the real lifestyles of a culture. Behind close doors many people choose alternative or non-traditional lifestyles. This carries over to couples where swinging or polyamorous families can be healthy and affirming. These non-traditional family arrangements can be complex to manage socially and societally. When divorce happens this can be amplified as our culture and legal system are not always equipped to deal with these complexities.

About Jessica
Jessica L. Malmquist joined the Law Offices of Alexandra M. Goddard in 2011 and in 2016 became a partner at Goddard & Malmquist. In 2018, she merged with Alexandra and Alison to form Greenwich Law Group, LLC. Jessica has practiced law since 2003 and has concentrated her practice in family law for more than a decade. Jessica’s family law practice is based on an in-depth understanding of the emotional, practical and financial elements involved in the dissolution of a marriage or post-decree matter, particularly when the allocation of parental responsibilities, maintenance, child support and parenting time are involved.
Although Jessica endeavors to resolve cases through amicable negotiations, she is an active enthusiastic, and experienced litigator who effectively represents her clients in litigation when required. Jessica strongly believes in the ability of clients to use alternative dispute resolution, including Collaborative Law and mediation, to retain control of the dissolution process and prevent the often destructive involvement of the Courts. Because of Jessica’s experience, she is able to help clients determine the best dissolution process for their individual family and situational needs.
In addition to dissolution of marriage and post-decree matters, Jessica handles preparation and negotiation of prenuptial and postnuptial agreements, as well as attorney-assisted mediation, and estate planning for individuals, couples, and families.
Outside of the practice of law, Jessica has worked with many financial institutions both domestically and internationally. Having lived extensively outside of the United States, Jessica is sensitive to cultural impacts on family life. As a mother to young children and former financial professional, Jessica understands the value of well crafted parenting and financial plans in smoothing the way during periods of transition.
Jessica is a member of the Illinois Bar Association and American Bar Association, as well as a Fellow of the Collaborative Law Institute of Illinois (CLII), member of the International Academy of Collaborative Professionals (IACP), and current President-Elect, and has been a CLII Board member for over 5 years. Jessica was formally a member of the Rainbows Young Professional Board.

Mentally, feelings of isolation and fear can crowd out any positive or optimistic feelings. Feeling down sometimes is a part of life but feeling unhappy can be something more than a passing phase. When sadness becomes depression, it can be time to get help. Depression can not only affect your life and those around you, it can also lead to problems with your health and well-being. Divorce is a life event that can cause depression or worsen existing depression related issues and because of this, it is essential to be pro-active in identifying and dealing with potential depression.
Some statistics about depression:
• Major depressive disorder affects approximately 17.3 million American adults, or about 7.1% of the U.S. population age 18 and older, in a given year. (National Institute of Mental Health “Major Depression”, 2017)
• Major depressive disorder is more prevalent in women than in men. (Journal of the American Medical Association, 2003; Jun 18; 289(23): 3095-105)
• Depression is the cause of over two-thirds of the 30,000 reported suicides in the U.S. each year. (White House Conference on Mental Health, 1999)
• Up to 80% of those treated for depression show an improvement in their symptoms generally within four to six weeks of beginning medication, psychotherapy, attending support groups or a combination of these treatments. (National Institute of Health, 1998)
• Despite its high treatment success rate, nearly two out of three people suffering with depression do not actively seek nor receive proper treatment. (DBSA, 1996)

Divorcing couples often go down an obvious and incomplete path for resolution and ignore the spiritual side of things. Regardless of a person’s particular preferred flavor of religion or philosophy, they likely espouse some belief system that helps to reconcile the difficulties that they face in everyday life, but many times these can be disconnected with or even questioned throughout their navigation through the divorce process, which can hamper resolution of the divorce and the healing after.

In situations such as divorce the requirement for a strategy becomes even more important as divorcing couples need to plan for future taxes and separate households. While there are volumes of jokes about the challenges of marriage, matrimony is not always humorous. Married couples face a lot of obstacles to longevity and mutual understanding, which can metastasize. Unfortunately, these relationship killers can end in separation and divorce. When properly addressed, however, many couples can better accept one another and remain together. Even when divorce happens, this understanding can assist divorced couples successfully work together for continued shared responsibilities such as co-parenting. The answer in many cases is to get a little help through therapy.
Therapy is defined as a treatment intended to relieve or heal. It is an amazing tool to understand the root of relationship issues to productively work through them. Unfortunately, therapy can also be associated with the stigmatized view that seeking help is a sign of mental illness or weakness and, as a result, couples avoid considering it. Our guest this episode has shown the value of the former definition.

Generally, in marriage, a couple works together to build a life and future. A large part of this is financial. Bank accounts, retirement accounts, real estate and many other types of financial instruments become the basis of this plan. When a split happens, the divorcing couple needs to divide the marital assets fairly and efficiently to get the best chance at a new start. This process, however, must be approached with caution as mistakes can be costly. It is essential for divorcing couples to deliberately plan for the split and involve a financial professional who is trained and experienced in the unique challenges that come with untangling the finances.

Often times, people considering divorce fail to take their specific needs and objectives into account during the selection process in favor of a referral from a family member, friend or colleague that fails to take their specific situation into account. Additionally, they homogenize the skills and capabilities of prospective attorneys during the shopping process. In the end, this introduces the potential for mismatch into their divorce which can add cost and inefficiency.
Join us for a discussion with Jason Sposeep, Partner at Schiller, DuCanto and Fleck and Collaborative Law Fellow, as we explore the basic considerations for choosing a divorce attorney.
About Jason
Jason authoritatively advocates for high net-worth professionals and their spouses who want fair and equitable results. Jason’s extensive background in business and finance as well as his compassion and understanding, enables him to sensibly resolve complicated divorce and custody disputes in and out of the courtroom. Jason strenuously believes in putting the children first in every divorce situation.
While Jason’s experience in trying numerous complex divorce and custody matters permits him to be an assertive opponent, Jason makes every effort, when appropriate, to keep matters out of the courtroom. As a skilled negotiator having been trained in mediation and the collaborative model, Jason has the ability to successfully navigate clients through the financial and emotional aspects of their divorce.

Meditation is undoubtedly and indisputably beneficial to its practitioners. While the specific techniques and intensity can vary substantially, the benefits remain constant. These benefits include stress reduction, positive mood and outlook, better sleep and clearer decision making. These can help in every day life, but they can be especially helpful during divorce.
Join us for a discussion with Patrick Kalscheur from Kalscheur Conscious Family Law about how he has integrated meditation into his practice and the positive impact that doing so has brought.
About Patrick Kalscheur
Patrick has been a leader in the Chicago Collaborative Law community for several years. He has been on the board of directors of the Collaborative Law Institute of Illinois from 2015 to the present, and has written articles and moderated discussions with the Chicago Bar Association and the DePaul College of Law on the benefits of the collaborative process. He is also active in local bar associations, including the Illinois State Bar Association and Chicago Bar Association—where he was the chair of the domestic relations committee (2013-2014); He currently serves on the boards of community organizations (Chicago Bar Foundation and DePaul College of Law Family Law Center); and he has been recognized by his peers as an exceptional family law attorney (Super Lawyers Rising Star (2016, 2017), Leading Lawyer (2016, 2017), and Emerging Lawyer (2016, 2017)
Prior to opening Kalscheur Conscious Family Law, Patrick worked for one of Chicago’s largest and most respected family law firms for high net worth individuals, and one of the country’s best and largest general litigation law firms. These experiences inform his understanding of what is right and wrong about our court system and its approach to family law disputes. He helps my clients avoid the pitfalls in the system, and he can offer these services to an economically diverse clientele.
He received his Juris Doctor degree from DePaul University College of Law, where he received many distinctions, including graduating Order of the Coif and Summa Cum Laude. He also has numerous additional training and certifications in Collaborative Law, Mediation, and Litigation.

We live in a time of unparalleled customization. From the choices of what to watch on TV to the set-up of the home screen on a phone, consumers demand the ability to manage their lives how they want. Divorce is no different and more and more couples are seeking ways to control the divorce process, control the costs and meet their desired objectives.
Enter unbundled legal services or limited scope representation as it is sometimes called. Under this model divorcing individuals work with their attorney to clearly identify the scope of what the attorney will do and the related cost. When coupled with the available options for divorcing individuals to do their own research and planning, this can e a very powerful and cost effective option.
Join us for a discussion with Sandra Crawford about unbundled legal services as they relate to divorce.

The formal definition of Collaborative Divorce is a process by which divorcing couples work with their lawyers and other professionals in order to avoid the uncertain outcome of court and to achieve a settlement that best meets the specific needs of both parties and their children without the underlying threat of litigation. The process allows parties to have a fair settlement. The voluntary process is initiated when the couple signs a contract (a "participation agreement") binding each other to the process and disqualifying their respective lawyer's right to represent either one in any future family-related litigation. The formal definition, however, only tells part of the story. In practice, Collaborative Divorce is an productive and civilized way to unwind a marriage.
Join us for a discussion with Jessica Malmquist, Co-Founder of Greenwich Law Group, LLC and President of the Collaborative Law Institute of Illinois. Jessica’s family law practice is based on an in-depth understanding of the emotional, practical and financial elements involved in the dissolution of a marriage or post-decree matter, particularly when the allocation of parental responsibilities, maintenance, child support and parenting time are involved.

Statistics show that roughly 15% to 30% of divorces can be classified as high conflict. While this is a a minority of divorces, the ripple effect and collateral damage that high conflict divorces can cause far eclipses this. It is, therefore, essential to be able to understand and deal with high conflict divorce situations to minimize the impact that high conflict divorce can cause.

Statistics show that over 30% of the population own either a dog or cat. Many own more than one pet. That equates to 150,000,000 companion animals in the US in over 80,000,000 households. Sadly some of these households will face divorce, which creates the need to find solutions for the continued care for the companion animals.
Join us with Steve Rakowski, a Family Law Attorney from K & R Family Legal Services, L.L.P and a Collaborative Law Institute of Illinois Fellow, as we discuss the latest trends in managing companion animals as part of the divorce process.
