Azuhl
South African born Ricardo Nunes, better known as DJ Azuhl, has become a household name on the South African Hip Hop and DJ scene. Being introduced into hip hop culture in the mid 80s he’s progressed from a dancer to member of the iconic South African band, B.V.K (Brasse Vannie Kaap), a DJ with Africa’s iconic DJ group The Beat Bangaz (alongside Grandmaster Ready D, E-20) & now owner and founding member of the Beat Bangaz DJ Academy based in Cape Town. Known for specializing in Hip Hop, he also has the ability to move crowds across genres of music ranging from funk, soul, dub, house, rock and mashups. He also runs Beat Bangaz Radio a Cape Town based internet radio station specializing in Hip Hop music.
He has opened and performed alongside international artists like Kendrick Lamar, Mos Def, Kanye West, Jay Z, Coolio, The Whooligan, A-Trak, Black Eyed Peas to name a few while also touring Europe annually since 2007 performing at various clubs & festivals like Miami Music Conference (USA), Hip Hop Logique (France), Pukkelpop (Belgium), Schoolyard Breaks (Germany), Battle of the Year (Nigeria).
Major South South African events and festivals include ULTRA Music Festival, Rocking the Daisies, Sizzled, Back to the City, Red Bull BCOne, Cape Town International Jazz Festival, KKNK, Oppikoppie, South African Music Conference, Rand Easter Show and countless corporate and club events.
He’s signature mixes are featured on Good Hope FM and 5FM respectively - two respected commercial radio stations in South Africa, with a monthly mix slot slot on UK based radio station ’ThisisWestSide FM’ as well. Currently running Beat Bangaz Radio he also has a weekly radio show on the online platform.
Besides DJ accolades Azuhl impresses with a couple of number one singles on Good Hope FM, one of Cape Town’s biggest commercial radio stations & award nominations like the 2017 ‘Best Hip Hop single’ with Early B for the prestigious Afrikaans music award show, ‘Ghoemas.’ Whether it’s providing production, remixes or scratches for artists like YOUNGSTACPT, Proverb, Hemelbesem, Early B, Zubz he has become a sought after collaborator with expanding his scope with other music genres beside Hip Hop.
Currently he is also running an NGO with DJ Eazy, HHESA (Hip Hop Education South Africa) that’s been responsible for various international cultural exchanges since 2008 & various school projects in Cape Town with a strong emphasis on youth development using Hip Hop culture.
“Cape Crusader” is taken from Prophets of Da City’s 1997 release Ghetto Code — a long-time fan favourite. On the original, lead rapper Shaheen Ariefdien delivers his iconic introspective style, marked by sharp, distinctive wordplay. This remix introduces a never-before-heard second verse, originally performed during the group’s appearance at the 2015 Cape Town International Jazz Festival.Prophetic Remixes Vol. 1 is available exclusively on Bandcamp, with the second instalment scheduled for release later this year.This project serves as a tribute to Prophets of Da City, the South African hip-hop pioneers who rose to prominence in the 1990s. In 1990, UK producers DNA remixed the track by adding a beat, giving it a new lease on life and making it a global hit. The remix marked one of the earliest mainstream successes of sampling and remix culture.James Brown’s “Funky Drummer”Released in 1970, “Funky Drummer” is one of the most sampled tracks in music history. Drummer Clyde Stubblefield laid down the iconic breakbeat that became foundational in hip hop. Artists who sampled the track include Public Enemy (“Fight the Power”), N.W.A (“Fuck Tha Police”), Run-D.M.C., LL Cool J, and Nas.
Redman’s “Superman Lover” series is one of hip hop’s most creative and long-running narrative tracks. Debuting on his 1992 album Whut? Thee Album, the first installment introduced listeners to Redman’s hilarious, funk-laced alter ego inspired by Johnny "Guitar" Watson’s original. Each sequel, spanning multiple albums including Dare Iz a Darkside and Doc’s da Name 2000, continues the absurd, comic book-style saga with outrageous storytelling, humor, and gritty East Coast funk. The series became a cult favorite among fans for blending fantasy, satire, and sharp lyricism. Redman’s animated delivery and clever plot twists made each entry a standout moment on his albums. The beat featured - “Ill Bomb” by LL Cool J, produced by DJ Scratch, was released in the year 2000. It appeared on the Def Jam: Survival of the Illest compilation and also as a bonus track on LL Cool J's album "G.O.A.T. (Greatest of All Time)", which dropped on September 12, 2000. It's been a while since I've done an 'Anti FM device' mix....the last time was probably over 7 years ago. Well the mix series is back in full effect with those head nod non commercial rap nuggets. This one has some fire underground hip hop tracks from 2022/23 featuring by Lil Simz, Soul Rocca, Tye Phoenix, Vinny Paz, Nas, Kool G Rap, Nems & more.

Hailing from the Cape Flats, on the outskirts of Cape Town, Brasse Vannie Kaap (or BVK) are a socially-conscious hip-hop group, comprised of MC's, DJ's and B-boy's, performing predominantly in Afrikaans. The group was committed to community involvement within the Cape Flats and the South African nation, participating in numerous workshops, out-reach programs, and charity concerts. BVK proved to have a broad appeal, becoming one of the biggest musical acts in the country, and performing in major festivals in Africa and Europe.
The group have seen several formations since their inception, with rappers Garlic Brown and the late Mr. Fat making up the core of the group, DJ Hamma left the group, and Rapper/DJ Ready D (of POC) and DJ Azuhl joined the group. The B-boys are Marlon, Brandon and Dmitri, which make up the 7 members of the group. Past B-boys in the crew have included Shortee Blitz, Cheez and Baby L (members of Azanian B.Boys and Pumpkins), while DJ E-20 has been heavily involved, and performed as the groups DJ as well.
BVK's self titled debut set precedent for the local hip-hop in South Africa. It featured guest appreances by the late Mr. Devious, D'Low and Garth. It also features a rework of Breyton Breytonbachs "Gedagtes van Gedigte".
The second album Yskoud gave rise to the group, and their first international recognition. On Yskoud, BVK tackled South African issues, rapping about Potjiekois or relaxing on the Cape Flats. Their serious side comes out on songs dealing with child abuse and wife battery.
Super Power, their third album, features tracks from the previous albums plus new tracks like the rework of the 7de laan opening sequence music. Their final album Ysterbek was released in 2006.
Mr. Fat (Ashley Titus) died on November 27, 2007 from heart complictations. Garlic Brown continues to perform as a solo artist and as a member of the hip-hop collective the League Of Shadows, making an appearance on Die Antwoord's 2009 debut, $O$.

Kwaito is a music genre that emerged in Johannesburg, South Africa during the late 1990s. It is house music combined with local African sounds. Typically at a slower tempo, Kwaito often contains catchy melodic and percussive loop samples, deep basslines and vocals. Although bearing similarities to Hip Hop and Rap a distinctive feature of Kwaito is the manner in which the lyrics are often shouted, blabbered and chanted. DJ Diplo described Kwaito as a slowed-down garage music†most popular among the black youth of South Africa.

In 2006 Beat Bangaz (DJ Ready D - DJ E20 -myself) with former member, Shamiel X was approached to put together the first ever mixed compilation for South Africa's biggest hip hop publication, Hype Magazine. This is one of those mixes I'm extremely proud of as it showcases the vibe of South African hip hop although evolved since then - from Cape Town, Jozi, PE, Durban it showcases the different dialects, vibes and evolution of South African hip hop since it's heyday in '82.

African Shockwave Volume one, the first release of DJ Azuhl in collaboration with Grenville Williams (High Voltage) was described as one of the most anticipated album release of 2010.Previously with bands Nine as well as Firing Squad, bassist & producer Grenville Williams has worked as a producer for Moodphase5ive and South African female rap group Godessa. Teaming up with The Beat Bangaz & Brasse vannie Kaap's, DJ Azuhl, was the perfect addition to this mixtape album.
“African Shockwave Volume one is a proudly South African product with a high international standard, setting the bar for future mixtape album releases” DJ Ready D – Iconic African hip hip pioneer, Radio and television presenter.
African Shockwave Volume one consists of a dynamic mix of South African music ranging from Funk, Ragga and Hip Hop. Artists such as the Godessa's one third EJ von Lyrik, SAMA winner Claire Phillips and multi talented Teba Shumba are just a few names featured.
The track “Hold On” was the first single to be released from this project. Written by Claire Phillips and Trevor Jones, the radio friendly single provides a tasteful introduction to this eclectic album.
In addition, the single includes a house remix of “Hold On” by Seven Soul Records artist and producer Erefaan Pierce as well as EJ von Lyrik's “Show me nothing” also featured on African Shockwave Volume one.
African Shockwave Volume one is now available in stores (distributed by KMD) and iTunes.
Remix of Jack Parow and Gazelle's hit Hosh Tokolosh by Grenville Williams and Dj Azuhl.
The song, originally written and recorded by Dj Invizable and Gazelle at Imperial House of Africa Studios and given the winning touch by Jack Parow, quickly became the first Afrikaans tune to reach the number 1 spot on 5fm.
Grenville played bass on the original song, and when he decided to remix it at High Voltage Studios, called on Dj Azuhl from Afrikaans hip hop pioneers Brasse Vannie Kaap and turntable wizards Cape Flats Beatbangaz to drop some more fire in the mix.
