Wellston Fire Chief Ryan Pelletier joins Main Street TV’s Morning Show to talk about the success of the 2023 “Firefighters For Kids” Toy Drive. The project helps children in the Wellston City School District have a Christmas. The firefighters always do their best to fulfill all applications turned in. Pelletier said this past year they served 149 families, which involved 360 kids. This is the most children the project has ever served. He said the group spends no less than $60 per child. Pelletier noted that amounts to approximately $21,600.

Many of these individuals require essential services but encounter barriers due to the absence of a driver's license or ID, financial constraints, and the time-consuming process of obtaining documentation for disability benefits, among other critical resources. The Vinton County boys' and girls' cross-country teams secured their spots in the Division II regional meet at the University of Rio Grande district meet. Samuel Boyd, a consistent performer, claimed 12th place with a time of 17:25.32, and Jackson Walker finished in the top 25, securing 22nd place with a time of 17:46.75. The Wellston Ohio Hill Country (OHillCo) Festival will be celebrating a special milestone this week as the festival turns 50 years old. This semi-centennial celebration falls along the lines of another special milestone in the City of Wellston. Wellston is celebrating its sesquicentennial (150 years) this year as the city was founded in 1873. Some special festivities will be happening at the festival to mark both occasions.
Later in the show… With the Jackson Apple Festival fast approaching, Victory Grange will once more be making apple butter at the Grange Hall of Pattonsville Road on Friday, Sept. 8, Saturday, Sept. 9 and Monday, Sept. 18.
Volunteers are needed for these days and for each day of the Apple Festival, which will run from Tuesday, Sept. 19 through Saturday, Sept. 23. If you are interested in helping or if you have questions, see any member of Victory Grange or call 740-286-3099.

Ethan Crabtree is on the show this morning to tell us about “Kicks 4 Coats”. Registered with the State of Ohio, “Kicks 4 Coats” was Crabtree’s idea of giving back to his community, supported through his own earnings and through donations that would rely on his kicking statistics during the football season. For every field goal, point after touchdown and touchback that Crabtree earns, “Kicks 4 Coats” would donate one coat to a child in Jackson County. Last year they gave away 124 coats with the help of our community, and this year Ethans doing it again for his senior year!

The Center allows students to take general education courses in a comfortable atmosphere close to home. The center offers a variety of general education courses to get started plus certificates to upskill your career goals.
John Moore is on the show this morning to talk about Truth Sports! Truth sports is now a partner of the NFL Flag Football program. This program is for both boys and girls in Kindergaten-6th grades for the 23/24 school year.
They also offer cheerleading. This program will be during the Fall of 2023 from mid-August to mid October. It is for girls in Kindergarten-3rd grade for the 2023-2024 school year.

This morning we are going to take a look at the ground breaking of the new Vinton County National Bank! Representatives and other dignitaries and principals were on hand for the groundbreaking ceremony Wednesday afternoon to celebrate the start of construction of a new $2.6-million bank facility at the site of the former McClure’s Restaurant on West Main Street in McArthur. This new building will house all retail employees and will be the retail center for customers once it’s completed and opened sometime in 2024.

Bakers will need to provide 2 dozen large cupcakes and 2 dozen mini cupcakes for tasting as well as an ingredient label. Bakers will be judged on space design, cupcake design, and overall taste. The park has been closed since April 5th for an estimated two weeks while work is being done. Utilizing a $75,000 NatureWorks grant through the Ohio Department of Natural Resources to renovate this site. Morgan is working on a new album that will be due sometime in 2022, with the first single released this spring.
Morgan is a singer-songwriter, producer, and educator from the Appalachian hills of Ohio. He has performed in many music projects, including Peach Melba and Blood Moon. His most recent project is a folk music collective called Wildwood Franklin.
The feels of Morgan's lyrics and sound convey a message of peace, truth and love. Morgan's music encapsulates the essence of the sound characterized as Americana.

The Vinton County and Nelsonville York game came down to the wire Friday night.
In the final 90 seconds, a Vinton County drive stalled on a last-second field goal attempt that was unsuccessful, and the Buckeyes held on for a 21-20 win in TVC-Ohio Division action.

One thing was made perfectly clear after Friday. The FAC still runs through Jackson.
Despite the high-profile matchup on paper, Jackson has no issues asserting its dominance on both sides of the ball.

This morning we are joined by Nick Rupert from Ohio’s largest free air show, the Vinton County Air Show! The 51st Annual Vinton County Air Show will take place on Sunday, Sept. 18 at the Vinton County Airport at 1 p.m. Along with all the flying, there will be the famous B-B-Q chicken dinners. The McArthur Area Eagles will sponsor the Candy Drop for the kids and Santa Claus will even sky dive in for the event. The show is free, however the VPBA ask for a $10 parking donation to help fund the airport. The show starts at 1 p.m., and Stevens noted that Airport Road will close at 1 p.m. for the show. Access to the airport will be from State Route 328 to Airport Road east.
We are also joined by Erik S. Miller & Crystal Miller of the Southeastern Ohio Suicide Prevention Conference Executive Committee. The conference will take place on Monday, September 19 from 8-5 on the Ohio University Walter Rotunda. General admission is $65 or $20 for students.
Rio Grande Community College has announced that Kristen Mershon will take over as Director of the Jackson Center.
Kristen has previously served in numerous roles at Rio Grande Community College. She started as a financial aid advisor and then became one of the first student success coaches before accepting her new position. She has an associate’s degree in Medical Laboratory Technology, a bachelor’s degree in Psychology and she is pursuing a master’s degree in Social Work.
Kristen said that her prior experiences as a financial aid advisor and student success coach has helped her be a greater asset for this new role. “In my previous positions at Rio, I have worked with all aspects with the student side, she said. “I have already developed relationships with professors and faculty members.”
She wants prospective students to know that the Jackson Center is a smaller option where students can complete their general education requirements and can receive an associate’s degree. “The Jackson Center is more like a family where we can assist students with any financial aid and open up more avenues.”
Kristen stated, “I love my Rio family and look forward to changing tomorrows for the Jackson County Community!”
Jason Mantell was hired as interim superintendent for the Oak Hill Union Local School District on August 11 following the resignation of Marci Shepard after serving as superintendent for three school years. Mantell’s time as superintendent faced an early hurdle this week when school had to be canceled due to “a safety concern.”
Today interim superintendent Mantell joins us on Main Street TV to tell us about himself, what this young school year has brought so far, and what he sees for the future of the school district.

The Oak Hill Union Local School District announced late Sunday night that the school district would be closed on Monday, Sept. 12, due to a safety concern.
The Telegram has worked to learn more regarding the issue at hand and was able to contact Oak Hill Interim Superintendent Jason Mantell who shared what he could at this time on the matter.
“Late in the evening last night (9-11-22), we received some information about some social-media content that was concerning,” explained Mantell. “A member of our admin team was provided this information, and it was shared with me.”
Mantell added, “We than involved law enforcement and other members of our admin team. It was very late, and we didn’t feel that we had adequate time to investigate and have school today (9-12-22). I hate to disrupt the school year; we have had a fantastic beginning of the year but the last thing I want to do is interrupt that. But we are in the business of keeping people safe, first and foremost.”
He went on to tell The Telegram that he did not feel comfortable bringing students and staff into the buildings today. However, based on what the school district knows, they “don’t feel that there’s an imminent threat.”
“I never want to take chances with safety of students, staff or the community,” said Mantell. “We feel like we have worked through the appropriate channels.”
Mantell said, “We are still following up to make sure we don’t have any issues.”
Mantell would not disclose to The Telegram what the social-media post said since law enforcement was still investigating the matter. He would not disclose whether or not it was a student or member of the community that made the post. Mantell did confirm that a member of staff did not make the post.
Mantell also wanted to apologize to the parents of the Oak Hill Union Local School District for technical issues regarding the robo-call system. He explained that the system showed that the call went out, but it didn’t reach very many people.
In addition to the Oak Hill students being excused today, students from Oak Hill who attend Buckeye Hills Career Center were excused as well.

Following Friday’s game against Trimble, Vinton County coach T.J. Carper went into his office alongside the other Viking coaches, sat down for a minute and started thinking.
After a minute of processing, he leaned up and then it donned on him.
“I haven’t been a part of an 0-2 start since my freshman year of high school,” Carper said. “And that year, we ended up running the table and going to the state championship. I don’t know if we’ll do that here, but we’re surely going to try.”

The Jackson Ironmen experienced heartbreak and deep disappointment for the second straight week after a close loss decided in the final minutes against a quality opponent. Losing hurts, but not playing up to one’s potential and making too many mistakes is just as troubling.
Last Friday night, the spiritual punch to the gut came in a 14-13 loss on the road to the Tri-Valley Scotties (2-1). The Ironmen missed the potential game-tying extra-point kick after scoring a touchdown with 2:05 remaining in the game.

It is Apple Festival time again, and the Victory Grange is once more recruiting for volunteers to help with their fundraiser. Each year, the Grange makes apple butter to sell at the festival, with the proceeds going to such community projects like the homeless, the school’s weekend food and backpack programs and 4-H projects. Volunteers will be needed on Friday, Sept. 9, Saturday, Sept. 10 and Monday, Sept. 19 at the Grange Hall on Pattonsville Road, then each day during the festival.

The Jackson Firefighters Association has announced that the 29th Annual Pig Iron Day will be conducted Saturday, Aug. 6 at Jackson’s Manpower Park. Today we were hopping to chat with Jackson Fire Chief David Channell, who spearheads the project. We are also hopped to be joined by Andy from the Appalachia Old Car Club who will be back again to conduct its annual Wheels of Steel Car Show. Hopefully Dave & Andy can make it in tomorrow morning!

Senate Bill 215 which went into effect on Monday, June 13, removes the requirement for Ohio gun owners to have a concealed carry permit. law allows anyone to carry a concealed weapon, unless already prohibited from owning a weapon, but many Law enforcement agencies still recommend taking concealed carry courses and obtaining a license despite the new law. Today on the show, Jackson County Sheriff Ted Frazier will be visiting to explain the new law. Sheriff Frazier will also discuss the bill signed into law Monday by Governor Mike DeWine that will allow education employees in Ohio to carry guns on school premises.

This morning, the University of Rio Grande and Rio Grande Community College hosted a special event to announce that the school would be offering a new program. Sixty years ago, the University of Rio Grande and Rio Grande Community College sold a portion of its land to restaurateur, Bob Evans. The Farm was the start of the Bob Evans legacy, and still houses the Bob Evans Restaurant and the homestead. In 2017, a portion of this very same land was donated back to Rio by the Bob Evans Corp. Ryan Smith, the president of the University of Rio Grande and Rio Grande Community College, was excited to announce on Tuesday, May 24, that this fall Rio with collaboration with The Ohio State University will be offering an Associates in Meat Science degree. The Associates in Meat Science will give graduates a competitive advantage in seeking jobs in the agriculture industry. Focusing on beef cattle, small ruminant production, and the end products, the program offers students significant hands-on experience with livestock and meat science. Courses of study include an introduction to beef cattle and small ruminant production, animal welfare and behavior, feeding management, the science of meat cuts and meat quality, and more. The program also includes courses in small business management, providing graduates with the tools they need to successfully manage and operate a farm.

This morning we are chatting with newly hired Wellston City Schools Superintendent Dr. Brian Rau. Dr. Rau will succeed Interim Superintendent Mary Ann Hale, who was hired to temporarily replace former Superintendent Karen Boch, whose retirement took effect at the end of October 2021. Hale was hired to serve as the interim superintendent through the end of the 2021-22 school year.
Later we will look back at Jennifer’s interview with Ohio First Lady Fran DeWine. The wife of Ohio Governor Mike DeWine, paid visits to both Vinton County and Jackson County on Tuesday to show her support for two programs involving children. We caught up to her at Elizabeth’s Hope Women’s Center, which provides free and confidential support services and information to pregnant women as well as different forms of support to mothers after their babies are born.

Channel says that this event relies on tax-deductible donations from the community. The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs released an assessment on Monday, March 14, that recommends the closure of the Veterans Administration Medical Center (VAMC) at Chillicothe. In response to the news, the Jackson County Veterans Service Office hosted an open session at 3:30 p.m. on Tuesday afternoon, March 15, where a representative from U.S. Senator Sherrod Brown’s office was present to meet with local veterans and anyone else who may be concerned about the decision. Veterans who use the VA Medical Center in Chillicothe and their family members were urged to attend to share stories about how the VA Medical Center has affected their lives. This morning on Main Street TV we will talk with Pete Wilson about what happened at that meeting and watch some of the messages from the veterans who spoke.

This observance will take place on Wednesday, Nov. 10 at 5:30 p.m. Potential attendees are asked to RSVP by Monday, Nov. 8, and state how many will be attending, as there will be a catered meal. Masks may be worn at visitors’ discretions. Any World War II veterans of any service are also encouraged to attend so that they may be honored for their service.

The countdown is on for the Tuesday, Nov. 2 General Election in Ohio, and Jackson County voters should be aware of the recent change in location of the Jackson County Board of Elections Office. This past summer, the Jackson County Elections Office moved from the Jackson County Courthouse Annex at 275 Portsmouth St. in Jackson to an office in the county-owned building housing the Jackson County Department of Job and Family Services at 25 E. South St. in Jackson. The Board of Elections Office is located on the rear of the building away from South Street. There are two entrance doors on the back end of the building and the Elections Office can be accessed through the door on the left side underneath a canopy that reads “EMPLOYEE ENTRANCE.” Those visiting the Jackson County Board of Elections Office should use only this entrance.
