Join us in this important episode of Potential to Powerhouse as we delve into the world of entrepreneurship, finance, and financeable (non dilutive!) growth for brick-and-mortar businesses. Meet Neha Govindraj, a visionary who has unlocked the secret to scaling businesses without diluting the founder’s ownership. Learn about Neha's personal journey, from her childhood fascination with puzzles and games to her college major shift from computer science to economics, with a passionate focus on startups.

In this episode, we dive into key highlights including:

Discovering the Importance of Capital for Business Growth:

  • Neha's experience at Bain & Company, and co-founding Glow Bar, a high growth start-up which led her to the realization that capital is crucial for business growth – and capital was impossible to find, without being highly dilutive to founders. This important “aha” moment was the catalyst to her founding Bonside.

  • Neha discusses how an internship at Bain & Company helped her discover her career trajectory. She also highlights the role of her supportive family in her decision to pursue entrepreneurship.

Leveraging Education and Work Experience:

  • She advises setting a time limit for starting a business to allow for inspired decision-making.

Finding Funding for Your Business:

Understanding Venture Capital and Equity:

  • Neha reflects on her experience with venture capital and the importance of questioning industry norms. She explains how equity ownership and valuations play a crucial role in the startup journey. Bonside provides capital to brick and mortar businesses, just off the simplicity of cash flow, without personal guarantees, or onerous equity giveaways. This was a new instrument in the lending business and has shaken the financing world - with a fair way to borrow for growth! YESSSS!

Revolutionizing Brick-and-Mortar Industry:

  • Neha discusses her transition from Bonside to GlowBar, emphasizing the rise in angel investing and the need for a different investment structure to scale brick-and-mortar businesses. Alternative Financing Options:

  • Neha shares her vision for creating a new asset class by providing growth capital to brick-and-mortar businesses in exchange for a percentage of sales. The idea is to have a fixed repayment cap with no perpetual collection. This alternative financing option, such as Bonside, can help unlock revenue for multi-unit businesses by improving cash flow.

Are you ready to unlock a deeper connection, enhance intimacy, and create lasting happiness with your love partner? Join us on the Potential to Powerhouse podcast, as we delve into the world of hormonal dynamics and practical strategies for relationship success. Best-selling author, Dr. John Gray, of Men Are From Mars, Women Are From Venus, unveils the secrets to understanding and balancing feminine and masculine energy in relationships in his discussion with Tracy Holland. These are tips for any woman seeking a deeper connection with her male love partner both in life and in the bedroom!

  • Dr. John Gray describes the polarity between feminine and masculine energy in relationships and emphasizes the impact of hormones on the dynamic between partners, especially with high-performing powerhouse women, who are driving hard. Hormones are influential to the relationship dynamic…
  • Dr. Gray highlights the importance of allowing partners to reset and give to themselves (here is a big hint!) when men pull away, it biologically increases your estrogen (and your questions around why?!). What should you do? It's time to go to the spa, and engage in activities that nourish yourself, (hint again – do not pursue him or chase him down, unless you want him to withdraw further).
  • Did you know that your female hormonal balances, specifically estrogen and progesterone, are crucial for your happiness, (and making a baby!), feeling orgasmic, and having positive feelings about your life? Yep, this is important stuff friends.
  • Dr. Gray suggests balancing one's male and female energy in a relationship and discussing activities for both partners after men's periods of ‘retreat’ and cave time. If you have no idea what I am talking about, I suggest picking up a copy of Men Are From Mars, Women Are From Venus, In the Bedroom.
  • Work-life balance is crucial for maintaining healthy hormone levels and relationships, work hard by day, but friends, when you get home, ease into your best feminine self.
  • Ladies, listen to this, over-giving to a partner can lead to resentment and an imbalance of your testosterone levels, emphasizing the importance of balancing masculine and feminine aspects in relationships.
  • To increase estrogen levels, ask your partner for reassurance and ask him for what you need, this can be crucial in relationships, particularly for women, and embracing feminine energy and reassurance can deepen intimacy (hint: it increases his testosterone when you ask for help).
  • Emotional vulnerability is vital for creating a more intimate and supportive environment in relationships.
  • Emotional reassurance is essential for making love, (women generally need to feel safe and secure) and low estrogen levels can affect women's orgasms. Focusing on emotional vulnerability can help improve intimacy and integrate feminine and masculine aspects in relationships, increasing your estrogen and making intimacy more delicious.

It's time to ignite your relationship, balance your energy, and experience the love and happiness you both deserve. Let's do it friends! High five.

Dr. Joe Hirsch is an expert at helping individuals, leaders, and organizations design and deliver feedback without fear. He is now a renowned TEDx and global keynote speaker, but just seven years ago, Joe was living a very different reality in which he did everything he could to avoid receiving any feedback from anyone. Joe and Tracy’s conversation centers on what happens when we infuse our conversations and relationships with courageousness and how giving fearless feedback can really transform our future for ourselves and others. Feedforward and mirror holding are two juicy terms that you are going to want to remember and implement in all of your relationships. You are going to be on the edge of your seat when you hear about Dr. Hirsch’s groundbreaking methods and how we can all become better leaders, partners, parents, and all around better people!

Key Points:

  • Growth hurts and it is hard. [03:24]
  • Feedback starts before you even open your mouth. [06:58]
  • “Feedforward” is a new way of thinking that was first introduced by Marshall Goldsmith, and Joe Hirsch uses the science and strategy to turn people into problem solvers.
  • Joe Hirsch has used his practices of giving feedback with many major companies and corporations. [09:16]
  • Just five to seven years ago, Joe was not someone who practiced what he is now preaching. [11:46]
  • A very basic human truth we should all acknowledge to fix the future for ourselves and others
  • Mirror holding is the essential act of “feedforward” and can open up new perspectives one may not have had access to before. [17:37]
  • The goal of mirror holding is not to force change, but to provoke an insight. [23:09]
  • How leaders can use mirror holding as an act of empowerment
  • How the “forgetting curve” impacts our approach to giving feedback [28:37]
  • Feedback Wrap: A four-part plan to beautifully wrap up these conversations, to change the dynamics from fear to joy, from power to partnership, and ultimately, from accountability to agency [33:44]
  • Feedback is about relationships. [47:24]

Memorable Quotes:

“Growth hurts, growth is challenging, growth is painful. And growth pushes us past our boundaries.”

“It’s no longer about power, it’s about partnership. It’s no longer about ratings only. It’s about relationships. And it’s about activating people’s deepest desires for agency and for affirmation, and not pinning them to a past that they can’t change or control.”

“You can’t go back and change the past. But you can start right where you are and fix the future.”

Andréa Bendewald discovered the power of circling early on in her acting career. Upon moving from New York to Los Angeles, she attended her first circle, which was comprised of actors, singers, writers, and producers, and found out that these successful and self-empowered women had the same complex inner emotional landscape as she did. She instantly felt less alone and more supported. She is now a circle facilitator and brings that same life-changing magic into her business, The Art of Circling. In today’s episode, Andréa and Tracy come together to explore how the authentic sharing of ourselves strengthens our intuition, increases our self-esteem, and enhances our overall expansiveness.

Key Points:

  • How Tracy and Andrea met.
  • Andrea grew up in the Lower West Side of Manhattan during the 80’s and this provided an incredible basis for an inspiring childhood and young adulthood.
  • Andrea began acting at a young age and even attended a high school for performing arts.
  • Andrea dives into what both of her parents were like and how their work ethics shaped her into who she is today.
  • Stop forcing things and start fitting into the flow so you can begin to enjoy life and trust the process.
  • The mindset of enjoying the process helps Andrea tremendously through her acting career, as the audition process is tedious; if you don’t love and enjoy auditioning, you are in the wrong job market.
  • LOVE WHAT YOU DO.
  • Andrea revisits the beginning of her friendship with Jennifer Anniston.
  • Andrea tells the story of her first acting gig on a sitcom alongside Harland Williams and Jason Bateman.
  • Andrea explains that she wasn’t in her “Zone of genius” and decided to cave into her obsession of circling.
  • Andrea tells her story about her first circling experience in Laurel Canyon right after she moved to LA from NYC.
  • Tracy and Andrea bond over their shared experience with talking sticks.
  • Burning Man led Andrea to fall in love with art for art’s sake again, and upon returning home from the festival, she decided to buy a teepee and create a sacred space for circles in her backyard in Beverly Hills.
  • Today, Andrea rides on the joy of having the best of both worlds through knowing what to say yes to, and what to say no to with respect of keeping the energy flow moving.

Memorable Quotes:

“In a circle, we get to remember who we truly are and reconnect with who we truly are before everyone told us who we were supposed to be.”

“When women gather, shift happens!”

“Self-made people many times have children who are self-made people… they understand that there are a lot of moving parts”

“I spent so much extra energy trying to force things… sometimes you force and you get it, it does move the needle, but I wish I could back and do it again, and just try and enjoy.”

Taking a family business into the future can be a daunting venture. How do you best balance history with vision? And when that business is winegrowing in Oregon’s Willamette Valley, home to more than 600 wineries, how do you stand out and continue to innovate?

For Alison Sokol Blosser, Co-President, CEO, and second-generation winegrower of Sokol Blosser Winery, the answer lies in staying true to yourself no matter the conditions. Wine wasn’t necessarily in Alison’s blood, so she studied other fields including marketing, but all paths led back to pastoral Willamette Valley, where her parents ventured decades earlier and, without prior experience, built a world-class winery.

In today’s episode of the Potential to Powerhouse Podcast, Alison walks Tracy and the audience through her journey, which now includes running her parents’ namesake winery with her family. It’s a fascinating conversation that showcases how the next generation can take businesses in exciting new directions when given the proper amounts of care, support, and attention.

Key Points:

  • What inspired Alison’s parents to start the vineyard and winery, and how did they go about purchasing the land and equipment as recent college graduates?
  • The family struggled working in an industry that was not established in Oregon like it is today. How did the stress of growing a family business affect Alison’s childhood?
  • Alison talks about the risk that went into the development of the winery and how the collaborative culture of Oregon helped the state rise in the wine industry.
  • Alison discusses her journey during college and post-grad when she thought she did not want to be involved in the family business, and then what finally led her to change her mind.
  • How an executive coach helped Alison and her brother, Alex, maintain a healthy and successful dynamic in the family business in the process of making decisions and growing the future of the business.
  • Alison discusses the experience of divorce in a family business.
  • Alison walks the audience through the thought process that led to the idea of having her and her brother run as co-presidents.
  • Tracy and Alison talk about their shared experience of being a mother while running a business, and the resources they turned to when they were struggling.
  • Is Alison excited about the future growth of the business?
  • How did Covid change the way the business was ran and the direction that the business is going?
  • In a family-run business, how do you prepare the upcoming generation to take over? How do you get these kids to learn about and have a healthy love and respect for the business?
  • Alison speaks on her family’s move to Boston, while the vineyard and winery are across the country in Oregon.

It is even more challenging when you are trying to be the best, most well-rounded parent you can be but you are still carrying the generational trauma that has been passed onto you by your own family. We’re in luck today! We are joined not only by one powerhouse woman but two, Lily Diamond and Rebecca Walker. These two women joined forces to co-author a book called “What’s Your Story? A Journey for Everyday Evolution.”

First, we will be speaking with Rebecca, she is an American writer, feminist, activist, and you likely know her as the daughter of Alice Walker, author of “The Color Purple.” Rebecca made it her mission to revitalize feminist movements to ensure the fight for women’s rights were heard, she knew when she or other people were not being treated correctly.

Lily Diamond is our second speaker today. She is a writer, photographer, and advocate for harnessing the power of digital media. Lily is all about democratizing wellness and empowering women through storytelling. Lily began questioning the ideologies and beliefs she grew up with and starting changing those perceptions as she got older.

Rebecca and Lily have paired together, creating this awe-inspiring book, with the call to challenge the status quo, to think about the way in which we view race & gender, and to think about the way in which we navigate our journeys through the world and offer hindsight regarding who we are as humans.

IN THIS EPISODE:

  • [29:31] Lily’s pivotal moment as a young adult, questioning how she was perceiving beliefs and principles in life and starting to change those perceptions.
  • [42:54] The day Lily and Rebecca met was perfectly aligned in their lives.
  • [46:53] Rebecca feels a strong sense of duty to help people express their real feelings and to be authentic to their true selves.
  • [53:02] After finishing the book, what was the biggest lesson they’ve learned through that process?

  • Rebecca made it her mission to revitalize feminist movements to ensure the fight for women’s rights were heard.
  • Lily began questioning the ideologies and beliefs she grew up with and starting changing those perceptions as she got older.
  • The relationship between Rebecca and Lily has evolved into a powerful friendship and comradeship, from being open and honest with each other to authentically supporting one another.

QUOTES:

“Our relationship has evolved into one of powerful friendship and comradeship.”
- Rebecca Walker on her friendship with Lily

“From a very young age, I felt the need to either speak about those things to other people and try to be an advocate of some kind, on their behalf, or to just note in myself that what was happening to me was not okay.” - Rebecca Walker

“When I started to listen to my peers talk about their experiences of feminism, it always came that they felt there was a kind of rigidity and a kind of totalizing ideology that made them very uncomfortable and that was an awakening.” - Rebecca Walker

“I think many of us have this desire to be accepted and to belong and that transforms often into an ability to not be completely honest with ourselves.” - Lily Diamond

I think the most significant thing that I have learned that has also been a gift in the process of creating “What's Your Story?” is that it takes time and it takes extraordinary patience.” - Lily Diamond

Today we are joined by a true entrepreneurial powerhouse, Joanna Riley, aka Jo. Jo has a diverse and rich background as an entrepreneur, investor, and technology advocate. During her undergraduate year in college, Jo was recruited by the FBI and deployed to Africa and the Middle East to work on case management, terrorism, and drug investigations. Jo pursued the next chapter in her life by jetting off to China and founding another company called 1-Page. However, she, unfortunately, lost that business to a hostile takeover shareholder situation which we discuss today.

Starting again from the ground up, Jo is the epitome of perseverance as she has created and co-founded the company Censia, which is growing exponentially.
