On today's episode, Wisdom steps behind the curtain of the music business with Jess Loper, a seasoned veteran in the A&R and publishing world.

In this insightful episode, Jess shares her wealth of knowledge and experience, demystifying the often-opaque realms of artists and repertoire (A&R), music publishing, and sync licensing.

From scouting talent to navigating the intricate landscape of royalties and recoupment, Jess offers a rare glimpse into the inner workings of the industry. Whether you're an aspiring artist, songwriter, or simply a music enthusiast, this episode is a must-listen for anyone curious about the business side of music.

Jess Loper began her career in the newsroom serving as an Editor with Business Wire who services the Associated Press with press releases for publicly held companies. From there she took her love of words into the music industry in the A&R department at Capitol CMG/Universal Music. In this position, she was an integral part of the production process for CMG’s roster of artists (Amy Grant, Chris Tomlin, Kari Jobe, TobyMac, Passion/sixstepsrecords) while also working with business affairs, union negotiations, and film & tv licensing for the label.

In 2017, she joined the team at Gotee Records as VP of Brand Management (Gotee Records) and Publishing (Emack Music). Gotee Records and Emack Music are a record label and a music publishing and administration company started in 1994 under the leadership of artist, TobyMac and label president, Joey Elwood. In this position, she handled A&R for artists Jon Reddick, Hollyn, Aaron Cole, Joseph O’Brien, Charly Beathard, and RENEE, cultivated writer relationships for Emack writers Tyrus Morgan, Hunter Leath, Ben Shive, and Lindsey Sweat, assisted with film and tv placements (ESPN, Fox Sports, ABC, NBC & VH1) and handled administration for Man Cub Music (Bryan Fowler & Micah Kuiper).

Most recently, she launched Without Labels Collective, a company that focuses on music supervision and licensing for film & television (The Jesus Music Documentary, Trinity Broadcasting Networks, The Huckabee Show, Compassion International, and Thrive just to name a few). This new venture is also focused on educating and supporting songwriters & artists on the business side of the creative process. She serves on the Board of the CMPA and works closely with the GMA Dove Awards.

Outside of her career in the music industry, her writing has been featured in the Huffington Post & Business Week Magazine among other digital news outlets and printed publications. Her greatest role in life has been getting to be a mom to Brody (15) & Kellen (12). In the Spring of ’22, she married her favorite songwriter, Brent Loper, on the front porch of their little farmhouse in Culleoka, TN

On this episode of the Christian Music Industry Podcast, I had the pleasure of interviewing Laurel Taylor, a talented musician who uses her gift of music to share the message of Jesus. Laurel's walk with Jesus began in a Christian household, where she learned about faith and the power of prayer from her parents. However, it wasn't until January 2015 when Laurel had a personal encounter with Jesus on the side of the road in Nashville that she gave her life fully to Him.

Laurel's journey has been a remarkable one. She moved from Tennessee, where she was pursuing a career in country music, to Alabama, where she made a bold declaration to God to not touch a guitar until He put something in front of her. The Lord answered her prayer by bringing a Christian music group to her attention, and she eventually moved to Indiana to learn, write, and grow in her faith. Through it all, Laurel has maintained a personal focus on relationships and using her music as a means of sharing her heart and story. "I don't care who I play for," she says. "I just want to get the Gospel out." Her passion for sharing Jesus has opened many doors for her in the music industry. She promotes herself to radio stations, and through these opportunities, she has been able to share the message of Jesus with a wider audience. It was a privilege to speak with Laurel, and we are excited to see how God continues to use her music to spread His message of love and hope.

In the latest episode of the Christian Music Industry Podcast, we had the privilege of interviewing Sean BE, an artist who has made his transition from rap to pop music. Sean shares his journey of moving his family from Colorado to Nashville to pursue music full-time and how intricately worked through this process. After deciding to be all-in with music, he was asked onto the Winter Jam tour but struggled with feelings of inadequacy and comparison.

However, Sean's perspective has shifted since then, and he now approaches his performances with confidence, seeing them as opportunities to set the tone for people to hear the message of Jesus. It is inspiring to hear how Sean has allowed God to guide his music career, and his commitment to sharing the gospel through his art is truly commendable. Sean's story is a testament to the power of prayer and trusting in God's plan for our lives.

Do you ever feel like giving up on music? Today's guest, Caylea, shares her journey of self-doubt and discouragement, and why she continues to work on her craft. Caylea talks about her journey of learning to write, produce and sing AND developing relationships in the Christian music industry. She also shares her experience as a songwriting major at Belmont University and some practical tips you can implement in your writing.

Caylea’s artistry is a unique blend of R&B-Pop with lyrics that attend to deep matters in her personal life, with strong ties to her Christian faith. Her production style threads together heartfelt acoustic elements with traces of neo-soul and contemporary R&B landing on her head-bopping pop beats.

In the fall of 2021, she signed to Lula Street Records, headed by friend and music industry veteran, Wisdom Moon. She has spent the past few years traveling with her military husband, who she met in Germany in high school while continuing to write and produce from her home studio. Caylea’s past music releases consist of two earlier EPs and several singles, and her two most recent releases, “Still” and “Woman” from early 2022. She is now gearing up for new music releases in summer 2022.

What does it look like to be vulnerable as an artist in the Christian music industry? On this week's episode of the Christian Music Industry Podcast, I get the privilege of interviewing James Paek about his journey in the industry as an Asian-American artist, songwriter and pastor.

James honestly shares about his struggles and challenges as an artist who doesn't look like the majority of Christian music. We also talk about his experience on the TV show Alter Ego (Fox) and his work as a design researcher. I'm so thankful for James' vulnerability - I know you will feel encouraged and inspired when you listen.

James Paek is a singer/songwriter who sits at the intersection of music and spirituality. Having been a part of projects as a songwriter and vocalist both inside and outside of the Church (Pablo Nouvelle, Yngcult, Kylan Road, Willow Worship, Je'kob), James is now venturing out as an artist in his own namesake with the upcoming release of his debut EP entitled "Exit Us" produced by Tyler Chester (Madison Cunningham, Jon Foreman) and James Krausse (Half Alive). "Exit Us" is an exploration of healing, of mourning, of questioning, and of leaving a what was once known to venture into what is honest.

James Paek is a pastor, artist and design researcher. Although James has been serving in ministry as a worship leader and speaking pastor for over 15 years (Willow, CCV), James’ exploratory and artistic spirit has seen him visit other areas of interest and passion.

In 2016, James’ fascination with technology and human centered design had him working alongside civilla, Google, and Ideo Consultants with Ei on projects at the intersection of innovation and social good. For instance, James worked with the Michigan Department of Human and Health Services reimagining the Public Assistance application process (Project Re:form).

James’ first love, music, has driven him to write songs and perform from a young age. James has written songs for both mainstream and gospel artists including Pablo Nouvelle & Je’kob of the Dove Award Winning Souljahz, while also creating for his band, Kylan Road.

With renewed energy after taking a sabbatical for the majority of 2021 and being a part of Season 1 of Alter Ego, James is ready to share his debut solo project EXIT US with the world (coming soon).

Wisdom Moon has an open and honest conversation with Natural State members, Haley and Dell, about their journey as independent artists and what it looks like to serve humbly, steward their talents well, and continue pursuing their relationship with Jesus above all else.

Natural State evokes so much meaning spiritually. There is a void inside us all that calls out for our Creator. There’s a need that we are met with at some point in life that longs for a Savior. There is a purpose for each of us here on this earth to be lived out and fulfilled. This is how we were created from the beginning: to know and love God, to love and serve others. That is the state that God wants us to live in with Him, our original, natural state. Lead vocalist, Haley, explains “It doesn’t always come naturally for us to love God with all of our heart. But I desire for our music to authentically point people to Jesus, our Hope.”
Chattanooga based, Natural State, says their music comes from a love of their creator and a love of creating for Him. God is the central figure of everything they write whether it is about joy or love, doubt or disappointment. The music has elements of pop, rock and worship with lyrics meant to lead you to a state of wonder and worship to God.

On this episode, we're joined by worship leader, songwriter, and artist, Jena Brancart. We discuss her journey of writing and releasing music, her new Christmas single and so much more!

Jena carries a heart for cultivating a culture of worship rooted in authenticity and intimacy with God. A California native, she began writing and leading worship in her youth and teenage years, but it was during her time with YWAM Norway that a passion was ignited for both.

Jena’s music is the overflow of her life with God, encompassing journeys with Him through every season. Rooted in a message of intimacy with God, her songs extend the invitation to find communion with Him in all circumstances. Intentionally exploring a variety of sonic landscapes, she believes every project calls for a different sound, because God is doing something new. With a heart to empower and encourage people in their faith, her prayer is that the songs she partners with God to write can become spaces for people to find encouragement and meet with Him in.

Jena is passionate about seeing lives transformed through encountering God and longs to see hearts fully abandoned and awakened to His love. Whether leading or releasing music, her vision is to help facilitate a place where people can connect with God’s heart.

On this episode, we launch a new format for this podcast and our friends, Land of Color, kick it off with a bang!

Land of Color started when two singer/song writers Gary Rea and Thomas Ewing met in the mountains of Montana in 2015. Before the band started, they were both worship leaders and solo artist in their own right but they feel like the Lord brought them together to create something that is unique and greater than the sum of the parts. Gary was born and raised in South Africa and Thomas is from Colorado. Their different cultural and musical backgrounds have resulted in a unique sound that is a blend of African rhythms, singable melodies and tight harmonies.

The guys talk about how the band was birthed out of community and that it was at family gatherings in the early days of their friendship that they would grab their guitars and start writing songs. “The songs came quickly and easily” says Thomas “and they were simply an overflow of what the Lord was doing in our lives individually and as a community.” In 2016, they decided to record an album of the songs that they had been writing under the name HOLY MNTN and before long they were getting invites from all over the country for them to perform their music. In 2018, they changed their name to Land of Color and signed a record deal with Remade Records, an imprint label under Sony/Provident.

LISTEN TO AARON SHUST ON SPOTIFY

Aaron Shust is in relentless pursuit of beauty, and it is that which lies behind his musical experimentation, his writing, his public ministry, and his tenacious grip on God’s word. It has driven his music since the beginning, well before his early success when he was named the 2007 Songwriter of the Year and New Artist of the Year and wrote the Song of the Year, “My Savior My God.”

His muses are a deep love for the Bible, instilled in him at an early age, the glory of creation, and the nurturing community of his family. He loves the promises of God, which have carried him through diagnoses of Down Syndrome and chronic illness for two of his sons as well as the deaths of loved ones, and have inspired his recording of the anthems of faith “My Hope is in You,” which spent 14 weeks at #1, and “No One Higher,” as well as resolved declarations of worship like “Ever Be,” which debuted at #3 on the NCA chart.

Shust’s commitment to the fulfillment of the beauty of the Gospel has led him around the world to lead worship with the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association. With Will Graham, the artist has traveled to Canada, Romania, Hawaii and Scotland. His travels yield a celebration of global sounds, such as ukuleles, bagpipes, brass, and Middle Eastern percussion, all featured in his new album, “Nothing to Fear.” He has spent considerable time in ministry and collaboration in Israel, where he again declares God’s promises for his people in the song, “Zion.” In 2014, Aaron recorded his Christmas album, “Unto Us,” with the Prague Philharmonic Orchestra, which has been hailed a “musical masterpiece.”

Despite Aaron’s celebration in worship that leads him to far-flung corners of the world, his heart is at home in Nashville, Tennessee, with his bride Sarah and their sons Daniel, Nicky, and Michael.

LISTEN TO STEPHEN MCWHIRTER ON SPOTIFY

Stephen grew up the son of a traveling evangelist, but the man he knew in private and the one he knew in public, were not the same. Due to the hypocrisy he witnessed as a child, he believed Jesus was simply fantasy. As he grew into his early teens he wanted nothing to do with Christianity. At this time of his life, he fell into extreme drug addiction. Eventually, becoming a crystal meth addict for over 5 years. During this dark chapter, someone gave him a book about Jesus, which he miraculously accepted.

One night at 3am, he sat in a bed reading the book, with drugs next to him on the side table. That night, as he read, he was acutely aware of the presence of God in the room. Stephen began to have an internal dialogue with the Lord, he knew He was real but didn’t know how to quiet the life of addiction he had known for so long. In that moment, with a thought more powerful than he could ever have imagined, He felt the Lord say, “You don’t have to do it alone, because I will do it!” and in that moment, Stephen believed Him and gave his life to Christ. He found himself with the willpower not his own, and overnight, went from addiction to redemption. He had come to personally and intimately know the God that saves.
