If you've been living in a cave for a month, you may have missed the first two episodes of the 10-part documentary release of "One Last Dance" - the Michael Jordan documentary. We talk all things MJ - with a man who knows him better than most, Buzz Peterson. Friends since high school, Peterson and MJ were teammates and roommates at UNC - and work together now on the Charlotte Hornets executive team. Besides a very successful career as a player and executive, Peterson was also a D1 Head Coach from 1996 to 2014.
Episode 004 dives in deep to the perceptions and realities of JUCO basketball with two of the best resources available - Indian Hills Community College Head Coach, Hank Plona and Ross Hodge, an Associate Head Coach at North Texas. Coach Plona covers changes in the JUCO environment, as well as how to (and how not to) recruit junior college players. In our second interview, we discuss transfer rules changes, as well as academic requirement changes with Coach Hodge. He also delivers a powerful and relatable story about his own journey from GA to Division 1 Associate Head Coach.
In Episode 003, we're specifically covering the topic of Name, Image and Likeness rules and regulation changes for the NCAA. If you're unfamiliar, this is a newly introduced policy allowing players to profit from their "personal brand." It's a highly nuanced topic, so Blake Lawrence joins us on the first half to break down the status and intricacies of the new rules. We're also joined by Appalachian State Head Coach, Dustin Kerns.
Recently, both Sports Illustrated and 60 Minutes produced content on the issue of human trafficking in basketball at all levels. While both pieces shed some light to the problem, we felt as though the scope and scale of this atrocity was being understated. Fortunately, through his work with JUCO Advocate, Brandon has become an expert on the topic.
This is an intense and heavy topic, but one we absolutely all need to be concerning ourselves with.
