The Guardian Angel Society was formed in 1997 by Rev. Msgr. Joseph Champlin when he realized too many students were not graduating from high school. He wanted to help students at Cathedral School with tuition and other support to make sure they continued, and ultimately completed, their education. Father Champlin passed away ten years ago but his legacy continues with the Guardian Angel Society. Kathy Fedrizzi is the Executive Director. The Inaugural Josh Martineau Memorial Scholarship and Suicide Awareness Acoustic Mega Jam is happening Saturday, February 10th from noon to seven pm at 916 Riverside in Brewerton. Josh Martineau, who was a graduate of CNS High School and SUNY Cobbleskill and owned his own landscaping business, took his own life just over a year ago. His friends and family are working with Two Brothers’ Light, a local non-profit which provides support and resources for those affected by suicide. For over 35 years The Samaritan Center in downtown Syracuse has provided hot nutritious meals to men, women, children and elders in need 365 days a year with no questions asked. The Salvation Army’s Residential Camp, Long Point Camp, is located in Penn Yann on the western side of Seneca lake. Each summer more than 150 kids from Syracuse attend the camp totally free of charge, thanks to generous donations from the public. Most of these kids come from situations where attending any other camp would be impossible. Over the weekend, some 30 local wildlife photographers displayed amazing images of birds that were taken in the restored and enhanced areas of Onondaga Lake. Elmcrest provides residential, educational and community-based programs to 2500 children and their families in 20 counties throughout Central New York and they’ve been around for 171 years! But how much do you know about Elmcrest? For the next couple of weeks on Street Talk, we are going to focus on all of the different aspects of Elmcrest and what they do in our community. Eric Young tells us about Elmcrest’s Small Wonders Early Education Program. Diane Nappa focuses on the children with developmental disabilities and/or serious medical challenges at Elmcrest.
