The story behind the dark origin of "Don't drink the Kool-Aid".
In the 1950s a preacher named Jim Jones starts a cult in Indiana. He envisions a multiracial, tight-knit* community where everyone succeeds. Sounds good, right? Well, in theory. Things take a turn for the worse and the man who once preached equality and respect suddenly thinks he's the voice of God, and he must be worshipped. What started out as a search for a utopia, ends in mass tragedy.

El sistema de niveles (A1, A2, B1, B2, C1, C2) no se creó para ayudarte a aprender. Se creó para compararte y para encasillarte y para hacerte creer que aprender un idioma es un proceso lineal y nítido. Esto no es verdad y hasta me parece peligroso. Ahora usamos estos niveles como parte de nuestra identidad "pues yo soy un b1", cuando en realidad dicen muy poco de nuestra capacidad de comunicación. How many words do you need to know to understand a language? Many students have asked me this and I'm sure it's also a question you have asked yourself at times. This episode is an answer to that question. I found an article by the BBC that I think is very interesting and that answers this question pretty well, so I thought I would share. It turns out that (resulta que) if we know the 800 most frequently used word families (listen to the episode to find out what a family is), we can understand 75% of everyday speech. We talk about the role of confidence in language-learning, his experience as a non-native speaker growing up and how his approach to learning a new language has paid off. The other day I found an article online about expressions in English and their crazy origins. I thought I'd share 5 of them with you and hopefully you find these origins as interesting as I did. The expressions that we'll take a look at in this episode are to bite the bullet / to break the ice / to butter someone up / to go the whole nine yards / to rub the wrong way. You might know some of these, but I bet their origins will surprise you.

More phrasal verbs coming at you! 5 easy, useful ones you can add to your day-to-day without any stress. As always, don't feel pressured to learn all 5 but just be more aware of them and let them work their way into your conversations in a natural way. There are examples for each of them to give you an idea of how to use them, so you can't go wrong. I know phrasal verbs can be tricky sometimes but with a bit of practice, you'll be using them in no time. But, that's the key, though: practice. Talk around your house out loud like a crazy person and try premade sentences in your head that you can whip out next time you talk to people. I don't know. Do whatever you feel comfortable with. Here we go again with more phrasal verbs! After episode 121 (What are Phrasal Verbs and How to Learn Them) I realized it would be much better to group phrasal verbs by particle (UP) instead of the main verb, so this episode is about exactly that. I'll talk about different phrasal verbs with UP, and give you a few meanings for each so you can practice them and incorporate them into your day-to-day because that's what it's about. Today's phrasal verbs are: turn up, give up, heat up and put up with. Remember, it's not about learning everything at once, but about feeling comfortable and confident with using what you learn. There's no real difference between increasing your vocabulary in English and in your native language, but when it comes to a second language, the effort needs to be more present. I feel that a lot of you are experiencing a lack of confidence when it comes to speaking English because you feel like you're going to get stuck mid-sentence and not know how to continue. An important episode in which I address, or talk about, a question I get asked very often about studying grammar and how important it is. Over the last year or so, I've noticed some teachers preaching to disregard, or not care about, grammar when trying to level up your English and while there is some good that can come out of this approach, I think it's restrictive and can hurt your development in the long run. It's better to understand guidelines and then choose to ignore them, than to ignore them in the first place. What's up? What's going on? This episode of English with Dane was inspired by a conversation I had with a listener over Instagram. I found myself giving him advice on how to improve, how to take that next step and I'm pretty sure it was motivated by him saying he wants to talk like ME one day. I answered that I would prefer if he spoke like himself (but in English) and after thinking about it for a few days, I thought it would be useful to record an episode about this idea of "being yourself in English". It seems like a straightforward thing, something that is clear and simple, but it made me really think. So over the last few weeks, I've come across a few verbs in English that are probably lesser-known (menos conodidos) and could potentially confuse you if you've never encountered them before. I wrote them down and here they are. I think you'll enjoy these, and I hope you can incorporate them into your day-to-day. Plus, they'll make you sound smarter and more fluent, which is always cool. Don't stress out about learning and using all of these, because as always, the goal is to be aware of them and not to force them into conversations.

Another conversation episode! I really enjoy these episodes because I get to sit down with someone and just chat for a while. We don't talk about english-learning really, but that's by design. I think it's more important to be able to talk about anything and everything and to get used to the pace and production style of different native speakers. Don't worry if you don't understand everything. Don't worry if you only understand 60% or 40%. It's more about being comfortable with the discomfort that a fast-paced conversation can provoke. I´ll pause once in a while to explain vocabulary or expressions that we use throughout the conversation, so just sit back and listen.

Back-to-back episodes of idioms? Yup. You wanted them, so you get them! This time I'm covering animal-related idioms and I promise there will be at least one that you'll be using in no time. Idioms are a great way to express yourself in a casual way, but a word of caution: don't overuse them. It sounds really weird when people overuse idioms. You have to sprinkle them in once in a while. You'll know when the moment is right, so don't force it. It's better to internalize the meanings of each idiom so you can use them once in a while, rather than just trying to fit them in whenever you speak. Learning comes in phases so don't get down if you can't incorporate these expressions right away. It's a whole process. I'm back in the house with some COMMON MISTAKES! Some of these you might be making, others perhaps not, but this episode is really about "mistake awareness" rather than "stop making these mistakes!" I think sometimes we're too hard on ourselves and we don't live up to our potential, in fear of making mistakes. So, if you take anything away from this episode, I hope it's that. Give it a listen and take your awareness up a notch (a notch is "an indentation or incision on an edge or surface", but in this case it just kind of means "level". So, take your awareness to the next level is what I'm trying to say.

Understanding different accents in English can be very difficult. The only way to make it easier is to practice. This is why this accent challenge was created. To help you tune your ear (afinar tu oído) and give you the ability to start listening in a different way. That's the real trick: learning how to listen and learning what to look for when you do.
But anyway, the accent challenge is back! The rules are simple. I play some audio clips and you tell me where the speaker is from! You'll hear clips from movies, interviews, podcasts, etc, so get ready to pay attention and improve your accent-detecting skills.

Plus, a friend of mine (native speaker) made a few mistakes with these two words recently too, so I thought it was a great idea to talk about it. This episode was my mom's idea but she has a good point. There are a bunch of adjectives that are really easy to use that can help you express yourself more elegantly. This is a list that focuses on 10 of those. Specifically, those that start with the prefix "un" and that might give students a hard time. Collocations are one of the best ways to sound more fluent, but more importantly, to give you flexibility and agility when speaking. Here's a list of 5 of my favourite collocations to teach. Practice pronouncing them AND using them. Speak out loud at home, when you're in the shower, when you're cooking, etc. Before you know it, you'll be using them in conversation. Trust.

If you follow me on Instagram, you know that I recently adopted a kitten (gatito). A friend of a friend found these kittens and their mother, abandoned in a town near Soria, here in Spain. The mother wasn't able to take care of them so they were looking for homes for the kittens. We had been thinking about getting a cat for a while, and we decided this moment was as good as any. In order to be prepared to take on this responsibility, I did a lot of research and in this episode, I share what I learned. This episode is also a good opportunity to pay attention to some of the pet/cat-specific vocabulary I use throughout (a lo largo de) the show.

I thought I would give you a break from our usual format and tell you a quick story about a medical emergency that took place (que ocurrió) on the night before my final exams at university: I was at home, doing some last-minute studying when I felt a terrible pain in my chest that made me freak out. Everyone makes mistakse right? Well, today is your lucky day because on this episode of English with Dane we take a look at 5 common mistakes you might be making in English.
People sometimes experience anxiety when speaking a foreign language because they are worried about making mistakes. It takes away our motivation to practice and makes us feel insecure. After dealing with different students' mistakes for 10 years, I've realized that the only way to improve is to be aware of what they are, and stop caring about making them as much. You have to relax, take a breath, and stop adding pressure to moments that haven't happened yet. For now, I'll settle with you being aware of them. And you can work on relaxing. Now listen and learn.

If you don't know, an idiom is a group of words in a fixed order that have a particular meaning that is different from the meanings of each word on its own. "A piece of cake" for example. We use this idiom to say that something is very easy to do: "Riding a bike is a piece of cake." There are tons of idioms in English. Some idioms are about sports, some about food, some about animals, but they all help us express specific feelings in specific contexts as well as helping you sound more natural in your everyday conversations. Have you ever been confused by how to use the verb "to get"? You hear it all the time in movies, TV shows, and casual conversations and you can usually understand what people are trying to say... but the real question is: Do you know how to use it?
Most of the time, we use "get" in three ways:
- As: to obtain or to receive: "Can you get me a drink?"
- To talk about changes of state: "It's getting dark." / It's getting cold."
- To cause something to happen: "I'm getting my computer fixed."/ "They got him to talk to them."

The word Feasible means possible and convenient to do…. So it’s as feasible as… (tan posible como…) building a bridge to the moon.
It says:
UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson is deadly serious about building a bridge connecting Scotland with Northern Ireland and is preparing to give the project the green light.
The prime minister has previously said a bridge connecting the two countries across the North Channel would be a "very good" idea, despite (a pesar de) warnings about cost and unexploded bombs dropped in the sea after World War II. Now Johnson has instructed civil servants *to look at how the project can be delivered and is awaiting an official assessment on whether it is feasible.

I guess it's more for me than it is for you. As I'm sure you've all heard by now, Kobe Bryant, his daughter Gigi and 5 other people died in a helicopter accident just outside of Los Angeles.
As some of you know, I'm a huge, huge, basketball fan. I've been playing basketball since I can remember and I still play to this day. It's a sport that has given me many things.
It has shown me the value of competition.. the importance of practice and determination, and as cliche as it sounds, it has taught me that teamwork is the key to success, something which I have applied to every aspect of my life. Basketball has taught me that sometimes you can try your hardest, fight tooth and nail and it just wasn't your day... and that's ok.
But I think out of all the things that basketball has given me the most important of all has been friendship. Sounds cliche, but I have incredible friends and teammates, and I've formed deep, lasting connections because of it.
Why am I saying all of this? I guess I'm just sad about Kobe and I'm reflecting out loud (en voz alta).. but I think the reason I'm talking about my friends, basketball and stuff.. is because... well...I was reading about something the other day…. Another famous accident that shook the entire world…. And it feels similar to the tragedy that happened on Sunday with Kobe, his daughter Gigi and the rest of the passengers.
On February 3rd, 1959, a plane carrying rockstar Buddy Holly, and up and comers Richi Vallens and JP Richardson crashed in Iowa. They tragically lost their lives… and this event came to be known as The Day the Music Died. The world mourned a terrible loss, and people all over felt an immense sense of sadness and unfairness.
My brother, the rest of my friends, teammates and I, all grew up watching Kobe Bryant. We watched him compete harder than anyone, we watched him win more than anyone, we watched him dominate, we watched him suffer devastating injuries, we watched him cry out of frustration, we watched him sacrifice - come back and still do the impossible. He came into the NBA in 1997, when I was like, 8 or 9 years old, and quickly became everyone's hero. You had to love him. Even if he was destroying your team. Because he did it in the coolest way.
He was like superman because he would do things that nobody else could, and when he performed, you knew that you were watching history. I'm too young to have seen Micheal Jordan in his prime, so Kobe was my reference growing up.
I got to see him as a kid, and as an adult, and I don't remember the NBA without him. I realized that in my head I've always connected him to basketball and the NBA in general. To the point where they became synonymous.
On Sunday I was leaving a basketball game from the Spanish League with my brother. Estudiantes vs Unicaja.. He had gotten tickets so we walked over and attended. After the game we walked out, and started heading home, talking about the game and checking stuff on our phones… Then my brother suddenly stopped walking, looked up from his phone and told me that Kobe Bryant had died in a plane crash. Today's episode is a special one, not just because it's the first episode of season 2, but because it is an accent challenge! A lot of you have reached out, asking for another accent challenge, so here it is. This one is a bit different from the other accent challenges that I've done in the past because these are all clips from famous movies.
For those of you who are unfamiliar with this type of episode, what I like to do is play a few clips that feature different accents from around the world, and give you the opportunity to guess where each accent is from. Chances are you've seen these movies… whether you've seen them in English or not is a different question.
Let's just start the show and we'll figure it out as we go along. So, you are listening to the first episode of season 2 of English with Dane. Hit it!
*Ok, we have officially started the show, so let's get into it.
Like I mentioned, each of these clips features a well-known actor or actress putting on a specific accent from a different part of the world. All speaking English of course. What's interesting is that none of these actors actually speak like this in real life. They are imitating different accents from around the world. I thought this would be a cool way to do it, because often times when we imitate or put on accents, we choose the most recognizable, the most characteristic parts of the accent to make it credible. Some of these are supposed to be really good and some are just ok. I'll tell you a little bit about each one after I reveal the answers. If you know what movie each clip is from, I'm sure it will be easier for you to guess correctly. Extra points I guess if you can guess the movie as well.*
So, let's start. I have 8 different clips, and I'm going to play each one twice and then give you a second to write down where you think the accent is from. I suggest that you write down each guess on a piece of paper, or open the notes app on your phone, in order to keep track of your answers. Some of these are easier than others so don't get demoralized, don't get discouraged if you have a hard time. Distinguishing accents can be pretty tricky.

Ok. So, listener questions: Here we go, the first one says:
What would be an accurate translation of the verb to resonate?
-Great question. And a tricky one too… First let’s talk about the verb a bit before I tell you how I would translate it… or try to translate it anyway… It’s a verb we use often in the world of music production actually but it can mean a few different things. You’ll see how they are linked though. How they tie together.
To resonate means to produce, or to be filled with a deep, full reverberating sound. So when a sound, is produced in an environment, and that environment, like a hallway for example, is filled with sound... As it reflects off the surfaces, and we continue to hear it, echoing away.
Imagine you clap very loudly in a hallway like this… ( clap) … Then you could say that the sound resonated throughout the hallway for example.
You can use it from the other perspective too, by the way. You can say the HALLWAY resonates. Or the body of a guitar resonates. So it doesn’t have to be from the perspective of the sound. You can talk about the property of the environment too.
But there’s a different way to use the verb TO RESONATE. And I think this is what the question was really about.
When we say that something resonates, maybe a speech, a poem, a song etc… We are referring to the impact it has on us as people. As people with emotions, feelings, dreams, etc. So: to RESONATE in this regard means to evoke images, memories and emotions.
You could say something like:
Her speech really resonated with young people across the country.
Or
This author makes his experiences resonate powerfully with his audience.So, the question was:
What would be an accurate translation of the verb to resonate?
It’s tricky because in Spanish, the word resonar exists, and if we're talking about the first meaning of the word, I would just use that word.. but in the case of the second meaning that we talked about, to connect, to evoke feelings and memories… to be understood…. Maybe you could say que algo te llegó, te tocó, te impactó, te caló, etc. If you come across a better translation please let me know. I’d appreciate it.

Today’s episode is a one-off bonus episode. While I figure out the ins and outs of season two, I thought I’d put out an episode and use it to introduce a new segment that will include stories from different people I know. Since it’s the first time, I figured I’d get the ball rolling and share one of my stories. This is a story I told a long time ago when I had a different show, so most of you will be unfamiliar with it. I decided to tell it on English with Dane because not only do I think its a good story, but it will also give us the opportunity to look at some travel-related vocabulary, which several of you have requested. But enough talking. Let’s just get into it. You are listening to a bonus episode of English with Dane, hit it!
In 2006, I traveled to Florida from Madrid, to visit one of my best friends from my days in Lima, Peru. As many of you know, I grew up in a few different countries: Peru, the United States, and Spain. Lima, Maryland, and Madrid to be a bit more precise.
During my time in Lima, I met some great people, one of which was my friend Juan Andrés. Or Juana as I called him. His mom is a friend of my mom’s from school and it just so happened that her son and I were in the same class and became really good friends too. We had a lot in common and we spent a lot of time together, playing music, skateboarding, drawing, etc.
Fast forward 4 or 5 years and I was 17 years old, living in Madrid and my friend Juana and I had lost touch a bit. You know how it is at that age…. and Facebook wasn’t popular yet. It would still be a few years until it became a standard tool to keep in touch, so what we had was MSN messenger and that was pretty much it. But even then we didn’t keep in touch.
So, we hadn’t spoken in a few years. But then, one day he called me out of the blue and we ended up talking (terminamos hablando) for more than an hour. He told me about his life in Peru after I left, and then his new life in Florida, I shared stuff about my new life in Madrid, etc.
After our chat, we thought it would be a great idea to see each other again and pick up where we left off.He suggested I go visit him in Florida, and after talking to my parents and then our parents talking amongst each other, they decided it would be a good idea. Huge shout out to my parents for making that possible.
So we planned the trip. We chose dates, went online to look for tickets, and finally, the trip was ready to go. I’d arrive there late July/early August and fly back around the 8th or 9th I believe.
I would stay with my aunt in Miami the first few days and then would go up to Boca Ratón to spend time with my buddy Juana and his family.
It was a great trip. We reconnected right away and had a great time. He introduced me to his friends, we went to the beach, we went wakeboarding, we went to universal studios and rode some rollercoasters, etc. Super, super fun trip.

It's useful to write down (apuntar) your answers on your phone’s notes app to keep track of your answers. Today’s episode features 6 different accents. I took this one from an old news story from a town in Ireland. Which means if you guess that it was an Irish accent, then great job. You got it. I don’t know if audios from news stations are easier or more difficult, because sometimes they try to sound like a robot for no reason and it makes the accent a little more toned down, or less obvious….

The most powerful volcanic eruption in recorded history occurs on Krakatoa, a small, uninhabited volcanic island located west of Sumatra in Indonesia, on August 27, 1883. The explosions were heard (fueron oídas) from around 5,000 km away… they threw (arrojaron) 20 cubic kilometers of earth 80 kilometers into the air, and created 120-foot tsunamis, killing 36,000 people. 120 feet is around 36 or 37 meters by the way.
That’s crazy. Imagine hearing something from 5,000 kilometers away. That’s almost the distance from Madrid to New York. A little bit less but still… Imagine how violent an explosion has to be (tiene que ser) for you to be able to hear it 5000 km away… violent enough (lo suficientemente violenta) to create 120-foot tsunamis I guess…
