Guest: A retired nurse at the Village of Riverside Glen
For this episode, a met with a resident who used to work as a nurse. She collects stuffed animals, and things that remind her of her past, and things that make her happy. Real life objects blend with the art and the items in her room, the birds she displays in her room become the same birds at the feeder outside her window, and the boundaries of reality vs imagination aren't clear. It's a beautiful exchange. The music behind this episode is "Amarylis Tape" by Dave Snider.

He's now retired, but he's still doing his bit to help, making sure to check in with all his fellow residents to make sure they know he's looking out for them.

For this episode I connected with Ann at The Village of Arbour Trails. Ann and I connected on a really special level, she was initially a little guarded with me in a way that I really appreciated. When she trusted that my intentions were good, we talked about the challenges of traditional models of education, the importance of having other people to talk to, and shared stories of stubbornness that were funny and real. Ann's big message is about listening - listening to the seniors in the spaces, and really hearing them, if you want to run programs or offer them services, involve them in that process. Stubbornness is born out of seeing yourself not included, and it can achieve great things, but so can open and honest conversation. Ann was amazing for this. I hope you like the show! Her story was inspiring, putting her foot down to continue a life of new surprises by insisting her and her husband move to Ontario when she was fifty and offered a transfer in her job. Her husband was already retired, and happy to live out his days golfing and curling in Quebec, but she knew there was more life in store for her than just that. I like her so much. This is a special two-hour radio episode I put together of the CFRU Mobile Community Radio show - today's show includes a conversation with Kelly McCullough of the urbanartsguelph.ca MADE program and Dan Evans of the Guelph Neighbourhood Support Coalition. I brought these two on the show because all three of our projects explore the value of breaking molds, exploring accessibility through a lens that includes comfort, trust, and empowerment, and demonstrating the power of building community in alternative spaces. The second part of the show is an older interview from the spring of 2016 - Bry Webb interviewed me in my early days of running the pilot-project version of the Mobile Studio, and it's kind of awesome to hear the feelings about it so early in its operation. Hopefully these two conversations will help shed some light on CFRU's Mobile Studio, what it is, what I do, and why it's an important project to support in our community . First I head over to Idea Exchange - Old Post Office for the first two sections of the show, with interviews with Monica of Monigram Coffee Roasters and then Jeremy, who is the team lead of the Old Post Office Maker Space. It's an incredible building, and every conversation I have there is interesting and inspiring. At around the 40 minute mark of the show you'll hear two interviews from Willow Road Public School, where the students are doing some "role play" interviews, pretending to be the guests they hope to at some point interview. Today the students act as a history professor, and as a Guelph Griphons athlete. I love this eclectic episode! Maybe you will too! Not everyone is happy where they are, not everyone is happy at all. This particular resident found me collecting stories for radio one day, and utilized the opportunity to share her frustrations with her situation, and the residence she was in. She mentioned she was a retired university prof, and was also frustrated she hadn't heard about CFRU during her time there or since. I figure you don't have to be happy in order to be on the radio, and that her feelings at her age may resonate with senior listeners (but I did keep her and her residence anonymous). I think by the end of our conversation she begrudgingly liked me a little :)

I headed over to The Village of Arbour Trails and hung out with three ladies, who shared stories from their respective lives in Toronto, the impact the War did and didn't have on their lives, and what their adult lives looked like prior to ending up at Village of Arbour Trails. These women are all friends, and had many parallels, but each have very distinct and separate feelings about leaving the city, and moving into a retirement home. I'm really glad they made time for me in their morning and were open to sharing their stories with me.

This episodes includes many interviews with the "Rockin' Rainbow Notes" - Rockin' Rainbow notes is a collaborative project between KidsAbility Centre for Child Development Rainbow Day Camp and The University of Guelph's International Institute for Critical Studies in Improvisation. They worked with DJ Cheldon, AKA SlowPitchSound to put on a free performance at this year's Guelph Jazz Festival at 1pm on the Saturday - September 15th - at the TD Main Stage in Market Square. It was pretty special! I chatted with one of the day camp leaders a little bit about the project, and then interviewed individual participants about the performance, but also about their hobbies and interests. We definitely have a few video game lovers in the group ❤️

This episode was with Elton Russell from Norfolk Manor retirement home. Elton's originally from the Islands, moved to England in his twenties and joined a reggae band, before eventually moving to Pilot Mount Manitoba, then here to Ontario. He had a life of many jobs, and lots of music.
I was trying to get to the first floor, and for some reason the elevator went up instead of down, opening on the 4th floor and introducing me to Elton. At first he said no, but when our paths coincidentally crossed two more times in the span of five minutes, and he shared with me that he was a musician, I convinced him that we were meant to meet. So happy to spend this time with you Elton!

CFRU volunteer Brady and I were lucky enough to be introduced to Greta, and convince her to share her beautiful stories with us. Greta has been typing out stories from her life, mainly from her time growing up in post-war Germany, and for this episode she is reading a few of them to us. These stories are a snap shot of life in a time and place I've not heard a lot about, Germany during that time is mainly framed in war stories, but alongside that were young women just trying to figure out how to have an ordinary life. Greta is "German by blood, Swiss by Marriage, Canadian by choice". I hope you like her stories as much as I do.

Every year, HOPE House organizes the city-wide Back-to-School Backpack program in partnership with other community service groups. They work to ensure that as many children as possible receive brand new backpacks with those supplies needed for students to be fully prepared, helping them to feel confident as they return to school.
Once again students at Brant Ave PS prepared all their own questions, hosted, recorded and edited this entire interview. I'm so proud of them! Tune in to hear the wonderful results of this wonderful effort!

This is part 3 of Barbara over at NorfolkManor telling the story of her travels from England to India in a bus in the 60's. Herself, her husband, her three children, her best friend and best friend's husband and their child, purchased a bus and set out for New Zealand. It is truly magical. First half of the episode is Barbara, second half is a recording from this past Halloween's "Pumpkin Promenade" over at Two Rivers Neighbourhood Group. The Pumpkin Promenade is an annual event that provides a fun and exciting way for folks to dispose of their pumpkins after Halloween - folks drop off their carved pumpkins to the park between 2pm and 6pm and include a small candle. At 6pm volunteers light all the candles, and folks are invited to walk the path and enjoy their neighbours’ pumpkin carving creations. Some people arrive dressed up in their Halloween costumes, and at various points there is a parade of costumes and musicians. After the event the pumpkins are taken to a farm where they are fed to pigs. It's very magical.

This was my first visit over to the North End Harvest Market, located at Waverly Dr. Public School in North Riverside Neighbourhood Group.

A bit about the Harvest Market: The Harvest Market is a Free fruit and vegetable market intended to support low income families and individuals to meet their healthy food needs.
The Market is open on Wednesday nights from 6:00 to 8:00 at the small parking lot beside Waverley Drive School at 140 Waverley Drive. In bad weather it will be held at Portable # 6.
Families and individuals can register and only need your name and address to qualify and although the market is open every week, registrants can come every second week.
Primary funding for the Market has been generously donated by Guelph UnitedMinistries, an umbrella organization of Guelph's United churches and ministries. This first recording at Grange Hill East Neighbourhood Group was recorded just prior to, and during, their inaugural Community Kitchen event. I had four guests, three of whom coordinated the event, and one who helps with the distribution of Grange's weekly vegetable share. There likely couldn't have been a better character of a person to have wandered into the mobile studio on my final day at the Village of Riverside Glen. Johnny couldn't tell me exactly when or how he had ended up at Riverside Glen, but he shared beautiful stories of living there, of his past times at the pub and on the walking trails, and of some wonderful women who have shared his life. It was very moving, the conversation crosses lots of paths of silliness and also heart-breaking-wondering. Extremely special. I appreciate Johnny letting me convince him to make radio.

It's an incredibly special episode for me, because it features Jim Hunt: a resident of The Village of Riverside Glen retirement home, an 84 year old retired UofG Physics professor who was born and raised in Guelph, and worked in radio at CFRC 101.9fm in Kingston. Jim is one of the main reasons CFRU exists, because - while sitting on the building committee for the new Physics building on campus in the early 60's - he requested the building of a room dedicated to a student-run radio station, and found us our first donated radio equipment from Ottawa. This episode speaks to that, to his love and fascination of the early history of synthesizers and Hugh LeCaine, and features some stories from his book of memoirs. It's really so very close to my heart, and I really hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

Aurele is a resident at the Village of Riverside Glen, and shared a beautiful story of a life living in the woods in Northern Ontario with ten siblings, and felling trees for the pulp mill at the age of thirteen before escaping to the city to work for the company. His life was filled with struggles (the stigma of being french working in an industry controlled by the English, being denied an education, and later suffering a vehicular accident), but it was filled with love and support from his family as well. I was really honoured to have him share these things with me and I hope you appreciate his story as much as I do.

James Skarnikat, aka Skarni aka "Jimmy the Crooner", is a performer who travels North America playing his own music by night, and retirement homes by day. He's played music since he was a teenager, and as an adult worked as a chef in Retirement homes, and eventually blended these two aspects of his life, still connecting with Retirement homes, now as a full-time musician.

Then I spoke with Meghan who works at the Village of Riverside Glen, about the Schlegel Villages Elder Wisdom Campaign - this is an excerpt from their campaign: "Ageism is a form of discrimination, particularly experienced by seniors. Our Elders have a great deal of wisdom to contribute to their communities. However, societal norms marginalize seniors, treat them with disrespect, make them feel unwelcome and otherwise generalize as if they were all the same. In June we celebrate the Wisdom of the Elder through a Social Media campaign called #ElderWisdom. Join us this June as Seniors from accross Schlegel Villages will visit their local High School and share wisdom with students."

"Double Stop" are a fiddle duo who perform at retirement homes. One day they were performing in the lobby when I arrived to the Village of Riverside Glen, and I was lucky enough to convince them to chat and perform for the radio. Later that afternoon we were joined by a fellow who lives at the Retirement home, and he told stories of growing up in Toronto during the depression, and his time in the Navy. For these interviews I was joined by CFRU volunteer Kathleen Speckert.

For my first day recording at the Village of Riverside Glen I was lucky enough to have three guests. These three women came through the Hobby Room where the mobile studio was set up, arriving to play a game of "Card Bingo". One woman was celebrating her 90th birthday, and told me of her days working in a bridal shop. One woman grew up a "foundling child" and met her husband while out dancing, during her days working at a factory at the end of World War II. The third woman told me a beautiful story about her first adopted child arriving to her at Christmas. It was a wonderful way to start my time at Riverside Glen. I hope you enjoy their stories as much as I do.

Steve “Shaker” Cuevas, founder of Shake True Hoops Basketball Development Services in Guelph, initiated Ball 4 All in 2007. He saw a growing need for access to skills programs for all who wished to participate, regardless of barriers of transportation and cost. In founding Ball 4 All, he sought to remove these barriers to access and provide high-level basketball training to those who were not previously able to attend his sessions. In this interview we talk a lot about his program, and his history growing up in Montreal and his life with basketball. Cheryl came in one morning to drop off a donation of household items for residents of Onward Willow, something she does several times a year. Angel organizes Onward Willow "Women's Empowerment Group", and would encourage any woman interested in skill sharing and/or making friends to join them (Every Wednesday from 2-4pm at the Onward Willow Community Centre - 15 Willow Rd. Unit K45.) Martha has started up a "Yarn and Yap" - a program focusing on Crochet Therapy and its role in combatting anxiety and depression. It free for anyone of any skill-level, and happens every Tuesday with drop-in hours from 10am-2pm at "Lakeside Hope House" 75 Norfolk st.

Chris Rowan was our most recent Co-op Student. One day after a few of us went to John F. Ross to do a presentation about CFRU with him for his class, he accompanied me back to the Mobile Site to see what it is all about. We ended up having a chat about our respective experiences in High school - him now, as a grade eleven, and me 16 years ago when I was in grade eleven. A lot has changed, and high schools are making some amazing progress, but it was pretty fantastic to see how much is universal for teenagers through time.

On this episode I had the very special pleasure of speaking with Max, an eight year old trans youth from the Onward Willow Neighbourhood. Max was born male, identifies as female, and continues to use the pronouns "He" and "they". I consider our conversation to be very lucky for me, and a very positive outcome of an otherwise negative situation: Max is homeschooled due to bullying, and because of related-troubles created by staff at his previous elementary school, where his unique situation was dealt with really inappropriately. It is heartbreaking to hear of older people in professional situations dismissing the issues of young students, and dealing with them in a way that is hurtful and emotionally damaging, especially in situations involving little people as vulnerable as I can imagine an eight-year-old-trans youth would feel. The reason I feel it is a positive outcome is because since Max is homeschooled, he gets to spend time with his incredibly supportive mother, and gets opportunities like being on the radio! Through here, Max shares some of his story, and gets a voice, while his bullies have to be in school. They may be mean, but they don't get to be on the radio like Max does - so take THAT bullies!!! Thank you sooooo much to Max and his wonderful mother for braving the radio. I hope through my relating-rambles that you felt as warm and glowy as I did.

Michael Gilbertson is an environmental scientist/activist/detective. What started as a casual conversation - about his fascinating project investigating the correlation between environmental factors and breast cancer in a specific group of women - quickly escalated to a history of environmental activism in Canada from 1960 to present. Easily one of my favourite conversations in terms of the immense amount of information he was able to tuck into one hour. It's incredible and fascinating and extremely important. I learned SO MUCH. I especially learned that CFRU should have an Environmental Detective Show (I'm brainstorming my recruitment :) This episode features a song by Meg Harnum called "County Lines".

This a wonderful cross section of the folks who utilize the Onward Willow Centre and dedicate their time to make the space run. Bev and Trudy have been married for 25 years, and have lived in lots of areas of Guelph, including the Willow Neighbourhood where they live now. They are incredible supporters of this neighbourhood, as well as Guelph in general, frequenting downtown often and supporting many downtown merchants. They have interesting and important points about the lack of bus shelters or benches in the Onward Willow area.
Gunsum came through the space to check out the items on the give-away shelves, and despite him not speaking a word on English, and me not speaking any Hindi, we still sat down together to spend some time on radio. We did manage to communicate about favourite foods :)
Moe has been a volunteer in the clothing room here at Onward Willow for four years. The clothing room is an important asset here at the space - they are always in need of more donations, and more volunteers. The clothing room has free clothing anyone can come and take for free
Ferol volunteers here at the front desk at Onward Willow, as well as helping in the clothing room and with the Women's Group. She has been a volunteer for many organizations for decades, and is a huge part of this space. She grew up in this neighbourhood in Guelph, and moved when she got married in 1968, and now in her older age she has moved back to this neighbourhood in 2010. The Onward Willow complex is built on the plot of her original family farm - when she was born, she arrived back to the farm that was here, which was owned by her grandparents. What is now the paved access to the complex, used to be a dirt path up to the original homestead. She tells wonderful stories of horse-drawn sleigh rides and life with her family then and now - she has children and grandchildren who live here in the neighbourhood and also volunteer at the space. She is a true gem.

I spoke with Scott Mooney, who chatted with me about the local chapter of "Motomo" - a "team" that offers men a safe space for support, project building, idea sharing and confidence-boosting. Of the group, Scott says "Men are often isolated, expecting themselves to go it alone in life. Here we can speak in confidence with our group, help each other through our challenges, and build a level of trust and camaraderie and leadership training that is seldom found in men's normal day to day lives." One afternoon while down at the Junction, I discovered there was a theme of "Flow Arts" - I had never heard this term before, but everywhere I looked there were people with hula hoops, and people juggling and and balancing on structures in the backyard. I was lucky enough to convince a couple of these people - a hooper and a poi/mixed prop performer - to come chat with me about their respective arts. What followed was a fascinating insight into this up-and-coming movement. "Flow Artists" is a general term used to describe the intersection of a variety of movement-based disciplines including dance, juggling, hooping, fire-spinning, and object manipulation.

This was a live broadcast from the Junction's Porchfest festival - the festival was a one day music festival featuring two porches, a shed, and "The Golden Bus" as stages. This was a great episode capturing several of the things that make these Junction potlucks so special. First was Seb: Seb comes to the Junction as part of the CSA vegetable share drop offs for his and his partner Bethany's farm "Zócalo Organics". Jesse comes every week to drop off bread as part of his bread shares for his bread business "Polestar Hearth" as well as to sell loaves to bread-desiring folks. And lastly, Bryan - a Junction resident - came on the show to promote the first"Junction Porchfest"festival. It's a great episode to let you know more about these awesome aspects of Junction life, but also to get to the core of homesteading and entrepreneurialism and jumping feet-first into something you love to build it into something beautiful.

I came down to the Junction and discovered a parade! It was the "Celebration of Active Transportation" - there were bikes, wagons, and many people proudly marching on foot, winding their way through the streets of the neighbourhood in a celebratory parade. It was super fun! And I grabbed two guests to talk about it - Alex Chapman, who is the Energy Manager for the City of Guelph, and Yvette Tendick, who is the president of the Guelph Coalition for Active Transportation. This is a fantastically informative radio episode about non-vehicle transportation, and certainly made me want to get back on a bike. Kyle came on the radio to talk about the program he helps run, called "Summer Chef School" This conversation blew my mind in terms of what these folks are teaching and presenting to children - totally inspiring and mind-opening, and made me reallllly exciting to save up some funds to enrol my kids! My first guest Luca was a fantastic young boy who used to live in the Junction, but recently moved to Windsor with his family. He starts as my interviewee, but quickly moves on to the role of "Interviewer" and between that and his Walkie-Talkie antics we had a really enjoyable time. For the second part of the episode Luca's mom Caitlin and her friend Annie came on to talk about the 10-week course titled: "On the Presence of Being", otherwise nicknamed "The Laurence Course". It was a fascinating conversation about a course I'm still trying to wrap my head around - a course full of interesting homework like "separating fact from story", "not gossiping and noticing the presence of other gossiping, and "noticing and keeping track of when random thoughts enter your head", all as a means of self-discovery and clarity. It's a pretty interesting conversation and just scratches the surface of what has clearly been a deeply impactful course for these folks.

This episode was recorded on my debut visit to the Junction - the first part is my chat with the young folks selling lemonade, and the rest of the episode is my conversation with Mike. Mike and his wife organize the weekly potluck, and own the house that hosts it. They also own the apartment across the street that houses similar community minded people, and also acts as an Air B&B for traveling folks. He also rents chickens. He does a lot of interesting things. What a fascinating neighbourhood! Tune in!

This was my debut episode out of the "Junction Neighbourhood Group"! Every Wednesday evening this neighbourhood has an outdoor potluck, Polstar Breads sells bread, Zócalo Organics hands out their vegetable shares...children run through the back yards, and the community hangs out - it's beautiful! I caught local Urban Geographer Daniel who was visiting the neighbourhood picking up his vegetables, and Megan, who comes to the neighbourhood to see her sister and her nieces and nephews. Wonderful guests, and just a glimpse of the community stories to come.

Barb is an incredible woman in Guelph who is responsible for and integral to many of our amazing initiatives, including the Poverty Task Force, the Better Beginnings Program, and the "North End Harvest Market" We could have talked for HOURS about all the various projects she's part of, and I very much hope to have her on the show again. For this episode we focused a lot on the North End Harvest Market.
The North End Harvest Market is a free fruit and vegetable market intended to support low income families and individuals to meet their healthy food needs. The Market is open on Wednesday nights from 6:00 to 7:30 at the small parking lot beside Waverley Drive School at 140 Waverley Drive. In bad weather it will be held at Portable # 6.
Families and individuals can register and only need your name and address to qualify and although the market is open every week, registrants can come every second week.
Primary funding for the Market has been generously donated by Guelph United Ministries, an umbrella organization of Guelph’s United churches and ministries. Other local groups that support the market are Guelph Neighourhood Support Coalition, Chalmers Community Services Centre, Trinity United church, Holy Rosary Church, New Life Church, Waverley and Brant Neighbourhood Groups, and the Upper Grand District School Board.

Tracey grew up in Guelph, over in the Parkwood neighbourhood back when Imperial Rd. was divided by the railroad tracks, and back when there were trees and ponds where the West-End-Community Centre now stands. We had a conversation about how the parks used to look, reminisced about our childhood playground equipment, and talked about the variety of ways things have changed for us as parents and for our children compared to when we were young. Sue is AWESOME and has a crazy unique history - her family in Guelph dates back to 1878, being one of Guelph's earliest black families - however every generation folks in her family leave to lead lives passing as white, and only those who maintain a relationship with their black heritage remain here in town. Her own sister has moved away, but Sue has lived in Guelph her whole life. She's a great character, and goes into incredible details describing old Guelph, skating rinks, movie theatres and bars. So wonderful. One of my favourites.

Owen is a volunteer at Parkwood, as well as summer staff for Neighbourhood Support Coalition day-camps. Inspired by his cousin - Parkwood Program Coordinator and former radio guest "Lindsay" - he enrolled in "Recreation" at College, and is just finishing up his first year. Andrew and Josh are two brothers with physical disabilities that are starting their own company called Andosh Accessible Gaming, specializing in modifying game controllers to match people's specific needs. The brothers live with "Hypermobile Ehlers Danlose Syndrome", which means they live with chronic pain and frequent dislocations. Instead of letting that defeat them, they have turned it into a passion. I am in total awe of these guys, and can't wait to see where their business takes them. Thanks for being my guests guys!
Here is some more about Josh and Andrew, taken from their "Andosh Accessible Gaming" facebook page:
"When we were growing up, I spent months out of every year without use of my hands.Apart from losing independance and slowing school work, it took away one of my favourite pass times; videogames. We spent years looking for answers, approaching many organizations. Most leads came up with nothing. Others offered an overly convoluted solution that would cost hundreds or thousands of dollars and take a very long time to implement.
After years of searching we began building our own solutions. Early modifications came in the form of tools to allow access. By attatching a popsicle stick to a resting splint, I could press the keys to play Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire on the computer. The first attempt at a custom controller was made by Josh, at about age 8. Josh plugged a dead calculator (which had died due to a short circuit) into our Nintendo GameCube using alligator clips. The controller worked... until he broke the circuit board. It was decided soon after that Josh should be taught basic electronics before he hurt himself or started a fire.
It wasn't until 2013, that we actually modified our first controller. We modified a GameCube controller to allow me to play without rotating my wrist (see pictures). We moved a joystick and altered the grip. The first model was complete within a day of getting the idea. Since then, we have experimented with ways to make the shoulder buttons trigger more easily. Looking online, we found an adapter that would allow the controller to connect to the Nintendo Wii U by using it in place of the Classic Controller accessory for the Wii Remote. Two years later Josh built a hands-free controller for the GameCube using a number of Staples Easy Buttons (see pictures).
We have lived through a lot. We understand what it is like to live with a physical disability. We know how frustrating it is to sit on the sidelines wishing to play videogames with friends. That is why we have started Andosh Accessible Gaming. We get it and we want to help."

Jeremy is a Brant avenue resident who is part of a group who – with support from the Mennonite Central Committee – have sponsored a six-person refugee family arriving to Guelph from Syria (via Jordan) He came to talk to me about the excitement (and challenges) of the sponsorship process, and some of the various ways we can help out.
We are really lucky to have multiple groups and organizations assisting with this process. The Guelph Wellington Local Immigration Partnership has a great site with many links to information, other groups, and FAQs. This is from their website:
“Millions of Syrians have been displaced by the ongoing civil war in Syria.
Canadians have opened their hearts and communities before to people experiencing war and persecution, and we have benefited beyond measure when refugees have been settled and integrated into the Canadian fabric. The Government of Canada has committed to welcoming 25,000-35,000 Syrian refugees by the end of 2016, many of whom will be privately sponsored. Guelph Wellington will receive between 300 and 400 refugees.”

This amazing episode was put together by the fantastic “BANG Youth Empowerment Team”, otherwise known as the “BANG Youth Group” The BANG youth group is run by Drew, and aims to give teenagers some opportunities to work on life skills, in the context of hanging out with their friends. I went to one of their hang out nights, and it struck me as having the magic of “The Breakfast Club”. It was really fun. This radio show has quizzes, interviews, beats by DJ N’Quake…so many highlights, but I especially enjoyed the exclusive interview with “MC Milkdud” and N’Quay’s advice to would-be-bullies.

Peggy and Gael came to Brant with a message: They would like the mouth put back in the body – for oral health to be covered and cared for in our current medical system. There are (thankfully) some wonderful programs that address this problem for children, but similar programs don’t exist for our adult and elderly community. This is an issue that doesn’t just affect our low income-community – very few people without dental plans can afford to have any of their oral health issues addressed, and as a result many people leave problems unaddressed, living in chronic pain, which can lead to more severe issues like depression, an inability to effectively work or eat, and additional major medical problems.

The “Indigo Girls Group” is a program for young girls grades six to eight, run by amazing young women volunteers who are students at the University of Guelph. Addressing subjects like sexism, self-care, and the portrayal of women in the media, the program aims to raise awareness of these issues to young girls in their pre-teen years, helping secure their self-esteem, so they hopefully can keep a confident approach to these subjects as they approach their teenage years. The two sisters who attend this program at Brant chose all the music for this episode.

Leo recently moved to the city of Guelph to live with his partner Deb. In an earlier part of his life he founded the “Ontario Wrestling Federation” where he wrestled under the name “The Cobra Brother”.

Kim used to volunteer for CFRU many years ago, and is now a frequent supporter of the Brant Avenue Neighbourhood space. She has this awesome idea for “Cultural Correspondents” to report radio from events across the city. I think it’s a GREAT idea, and I’m brainstorming how to implement it. The second half of the episode was an undeniable Mobile Radio highlight – Dorota and “Dr. Mike” came down to the coffee hour equipped with drums, and performed some beautiful songs and chants. The diversity and magic riddled through the Brant avenue neighbourhood is super inspiring.
