You're Khloe Kardashian, you've been body shamed, bullied, and compared to your sisters for years. An unedited photo of you is accidentally posted to the Internet. What do you do about it?

This is an episode about the insidious effects of shame. And how body shaming and toxic beauty standards can only be resolved if we confront our shame, and don't let an unedited photo spark a legal reaction in an attempt to purge the entire Internet of a normal photo. Instead of a cease and desist of an unedited photo, how about a #ceaseanddesistonshame?

Comedian Erica Rhodes joins the podcast to talk about love, loss, and of course, laughter. Erica is the best comedian I've been in a car accident with. She has had a successful career doing stand up and performing, starting with appearances on "A Prairie Home Companion" alongside actors like Alison Janney, Martin Sheen and Meryl Streep. Since then she's toured the world, and released her album "Sad Lemon" and appeared on NBC's "Bring The Funny." We talk about what it's like recording a stand up special during the pandemic, which she did this Summer at the Rose Bowl. And life during lockdown, including our adventures going to get oxygenated baths and toilet paper right before everything changed. We also talk about the tough parts of pandemic, including saying goodbye to loved ones. Finding closure in difficult situations. And what we've learned about grief and love. We also give advice on dating, navigating toxic relationships and dodging men who have “your best interest” at heart. If a guy says this to you, RUN. Also, career advice! How to collaborate with your friends and how to make teamwork actually work, and not freaking out on your business partners. How to find effective partnerships with co-writers and managers. How to keep momentum in creative projects, and why it's important to turn hope into celebrations. Oh and the what to do if you get into a car accident right before a pitch meeting! This episode started out as a guide on how to take control of your social media experience, take your power back, and draw boundaries. But what it turned into was a story about my life, and the irony of spending time on platforms people scroll through for a second only to forget about 5 minutes later. Which, in itself, says something about social media so I decided to release it anyway.

Welcome to Season 3 of Hot Pizza Ass. Allow me to reintroduce myself. What is a hot pizza ass?

Hot Pizza Ass (n.) - Somebody truly in their worth, where outside expectations placed upon them or internalized expectations not in alignment with their their souls deepest desires have no relevance to the choices they make, how they see themselves or live their life. A truly free being.

Ten Commandments of being a Hot Pizza Ass

  1. Thou shalt eat pizza - no food is off limits for a hot pizza ass. She eats what she wants. She doesn’t go on Gwyneth Paltrow bullshit no food detoxes her body doesn’t need. She consumes as she pleases and understands she is beautiful and worthy at any size. At any size baby.
  2. Thou shalt love others and recognize the hot pizza ass inside of them too - real recognize real. And hot pizza of ass recognize hot pizza ass. everybody needs a cheerleader and people who are secure and feel good about themselves are more equipped to hype up ye fellow man or woman or non gender confirming individual. Taking care of your self on a soul level empowers you and empowers others creating a ripple effect, and a better world for all!
  3. Thou shalt not take any shit - when your neighbor comes you with some bullshit in the form of unwanted opinions about your life, your body, your sexuality, your relationships, you stop them right there. Thank them in advance for their concern and tell them to get to steppin', look in the mirror, and check themself for their unexamined internal misery. Wish them well, but wish them well on their way.
  4. Thou shalt be fearless in the pursuit of your own personal happiness - when one finds what truly lights up their soul, there is no going back. They must commit to their new path, step in to their being, and find community that will love and support them.
  5. Thou shalt find your tribe - not every hot pizza ass is born into a family, community, social circle or peer group that loves and accepts them. And that’s ok. Find your tribe of like-minded individuals.
  6. Thou shalt draw boundaries - boundaries are your new best friend, baby. You may need to draw boundaries with your family, old friendships, exes, or other people in your life who once served a purpose but now feel like dead weight. You may need to draw boundaries with time spent on social media. With your job. Or anything or anyone else you deem as an unhealthy influence for your personal growth. We don’t have control of every element of our life, that’s why God gave us boundaries. Use them.
  7. Thou shalt express thyself - Like Queen Madonna once said, don’t go for second best, baby. express thyself. Tell the world who you are, what you want, and don’t make a habit out of settling for less. Because when you really love thyself, you’ll want to sing from the mountain tops like Julie Andrews in the sound of music! Or post a picture on Instagram with a pizza pizza on your butt.
  8. Thou shalt educate yourself - I don’t care if you went to no school, a trade school, a community college, or one of the best universities in the world. Your education should be a priority and it should continue for the rest of your life. whether you choose to continue your education via YouTube university, Duolingo, audible, acting class, or traditional school, a true hot pizza ass values her mind and knows an expensive diploma doesn’t make you better than anyone else. Your relationship with learning is a lifelong journey. And like Oprah said, when you know better, you do better.
  9. Thou shalt have the courage to say no - when a hot pizza ass steps into her power, everyone wants a slice. Whether it’s a relationship proposition, a job opportunity, an investment of money or time, or a diet tea instagram collab. A hot pizza ass knows when to say no if it doesn’t feel right, or in alignment with her higher self
  10. Thou shalt stay inspired - Indulge your inner hot pizza ass, like Qveen Herby said “treat her real good because she is talented.” Listen to Hot Pizza Ass to stay inspired and to be introduced to others on our same journey. Take your inner artist on dates. Buy her some skin care. Meditate. Spend time in nature. Journal. remember that every day is a once in a lifetime opportunity. Spend them wisely. Cultivate them beautifully. And always, always be open to miracles.

This episode is inspired by a Q&A question received for one of our live shows regarding handling grief. It's an emotional show that was tough for me to record due to recent life events, but I feel strongly that it's an important topic connected to mental health and emotional well being. Being yourself can be very tough in times like these when collectively we're dealing with pain, sadness, and loss, so in this solo episode I discuss my experiences with grief, healing, and processing emotionally difficult situations. I hope it provides some comfort for anyone experiencing something similar.

Hello listeners. On this episode of the podcast I'm giving my platform to the voices that need to be heard. Our country is in great need of reform and healing. Part of dismantling racism is the acknowledgement that racism absolutely exists, and if you aren't aware of that because you've been on the opposite side of oppression, please listen to these stories of racism and discrimination submitted by POC.

Additionally, it's important to be an active ally. Below I've included ways you can donate, get involved, receive information, and support organizations that seek change in police brutality, reform, and justice.

On this special live episode of Hot Pizza Ass we discuss the current state of America this week. Although we had a very different show planned, I felt it was unethical to proceed with the show as is, and instead we recorded this episode addressing the issues we are collectively experiencing across the country.

These are uncomfortable conversations to have, and for some people to hear. That's why we felt the need to have them on this episode. Thank you for listening.

Topics include: Police brutality, protests over the murder of George Floyd, the White House on lockdown, the lack of accountability, failing leadership, Amy Cooper falsifying events over a 911 call in an attempt to punish Christian Cooper for asking her to put a leash on her dog, celebrity involvement in these issues, social media strain, oppression, racism, and why it's so important to use your voice, your dollars (if possible), and your vote to make a difference.

Part of being a Hot Pizza Ass is taking responsibility and control of your finances. So, on this week's episode I'm doing a tell all on how I paid off over $5000 dollars of credit card debt in 6 months, even in a pandemic, even as a freelancer in an industry which has been shut down since March. HINT: it takes awareness (and actually reading your CC statements), and an aggressive plan to beat the interest game that the credit card companies want you to lose. Plus, why I got into debt in the first place, mistakes I made, what I learned about finances, interest, credit scores, and credit card companies in the process of getting out of it. Zach Harper (@talkhoops) joins in as well to share simple tips on financial lessons he's learned as well and what he did to improve his credit score in just 4 months. Corrections - There's a part in the pod where I say I made smaller payments in "April and May," I meant to say "April and March." Blame it on the celebration sake. Also, I said if I paid just the minimum on my credit card it would take like 40 years to pay off. I just double checked. The correct number was about 18 years. Philosophy professor Dr. Gwendolyn Dolske and Rudy Salo of Good Is In The Details Podcast ask their guests, "What does it mean to live life well?" In these trying times, I thought it would be perfect to bring their love of wisdom to Hot Pizza Ass where we can shoot the shit about what it's like living through a pandemic, but also dig into the philosophical aspects of "Love is Blind" and "90 Day Fiance" - we've got range.

Also, what it's like being a new mother in quarantine - taking advantage of the government mandated break, and editing out baby farts from podcast episodes. Zombie films and outbreak narratives, and how it's similar to our current reality. "Love is Blind" on Netflix - and lack of body types or age range - could they have done better? My theory on how TLC's "90 Day Fiance" unexpectedly combats xenophobia. The hot mess of getting tested for Covid in LA County right now. Examining how the influx of free quarantine content might be devaluing entertainment. Asking the difficult questions of escapism - are we all going to turn into alcoholics after this? And the power of podcasting. "I don't make sacrifices I make decisions to get to where I want to be." Today we're joined by UFC fighter Jessy Jess who pulls back the curtain on what it's like being a professional athlete and how she went from living in a van with her family in Australia to working 3 jobs and sleeping 1 hour a night to moving to the states and becoming a full time athlete. We also discuss her journey to sobriety, how she's able to train 4-9 hours a day, and how she's learned to lowered her overhead costs to be able to devote herself wholly to her goals. Also, what it's like being a woman in the male-dominated UFC, how listening to her body helped her make the decision to go up a weight division, and how she confronts mental blocks and challenges in a sport that requires so much focus and confidence. Of course we talk about what fighting requires of your body, including her experiences with sometimes grueling weigh ins with no water, being in a sauna for 16 hours straight to be able to fight at 125 lbs - a weight class she later decided to leave after learning her thyroid was shutting down, among other things. Through it all she takes complete control of her life, her decisions and approaches everything with the mindset of champion. Listen to this episode and TRY not to be inspired. I dare you. Three weeks have passed since we last spoke to Dr. Chelsea Shover. Since then, so much has changed in the research and information surrounding the novel Coronavirus. Dr. Shover joins the podcast again today to answer your questions submitted via Instagram. Questions discussed include: How long will this last? Did Covid 19 escape from a lab in Wuhan, China? Can drinking tea help? How will heat (or scarfs?) affect the virus? Is Covid in the air? Will staying home in a sterile environment affect our immune systems? Is it necessary to wear an N95 mask? Outside of age, gender, and immune health what are other triggers? Can you get reinfected? How screwed is Florida? We also discuss fake cures and clear up some rumors about what people are saying about Covid 19.

“I’m disabled. I don’t have feet. I have a manual wheelchair. I’m fat. I’m Afro-Latina. You don’t get to see women like me in roles that are sexy, fun and powerful. The showcase is about casting directors and making that first impression. It was important for me to come across that way" - A quote from comedian Danielle Perez in the article in the LA Times this week that chronicled her journey from CBS Diversity Showcase, the opportunities it led to, and how she's dealing now that everything is on hold due to a worldwide pandemic. Danielle is inspiring, vivacious, and hilarious, and I'm so happy she joined us this week on Hot Pizza Ass to talk to us about how she's dealing as an extrovert in a time that requires introversion, how she did a social distancing photoshoot for the LA Times, how she's spending her time right now cooking and indulging in a bomb skin care routine (yes, we get details!). We also swap Korean spa stories, being comfortable in your body, embarrassing networking stories, industry lessons learned, and how social media has changed and becoming super entertaining during the times of the pandemic, and of course, pizza! Carlos Santos grew up in Puerto Rico with no family members in entertainment - he had to blaze his own trail and figure out how to navigate a career as a performer which led him to hosting gigs on MTV Tres, a career in comedy, and now he's on "Gentefied" on Netflix. He was also my co-star in "Border Patrol" which has had a very successful festival run - I had a blast working with Carlos, he's a very talented performer, a great friend, and I'm so proud of him and happy to have him on the podcast. Our conversation covers a lot of ground, and we talk a lot about growth, including: How life changes and energetic shifts brought him a new mindset and fresh start, how shedding things that don't serve can you lead to positive change, how he made the scary decision to leave a successful career as a host and make the transition to acting and comedy, and why it's so important to appreciate the good things when they happen. We also get an IG Live call from Russell Simmons for 2 seconds who wanted to tell us about "Healing The Hood Through Comedy" with DefComedy Jam, but connectivity interfered. This week's episode is a conversation with Ben Gleib - comedian, actor, host and former Presidential candidate, in his first in-depth interview after completing his run for office just a few weeks ago. He gives us a fascinating inside look at what life is really like on the grueling campaign trail. Ben put his life as a comedian on hold for 8 months in an attempt to do something for the country fueled by his belief that we are in dire need of change and better leadership - a belief that many Americans share. But does our democracy actually support change when money and special interest groups heavily influence who gets a voice in our political process?

Conversation topics include: How money and big business affects politics, getting priced out of the big leagues, getting arrested while protesting in Washington DC, who was a dick on the campaign trail, behind the scenes stories including his most embarrassing (hilarious) moment of the campaign, platforms he believes in, perspective on the current election, and what it's like to come back to normal life as comic, social media censorship and our Orwellian future. This week's episode is all about intuition - What can we learn from it? Why do we tune it out so often? What's the difference between listening to your gut and being judgmental? Why do we talk ourselves out of listening to our gut feelings and how do we get back in touch with it?

My guests this episode (podcaster Zach Harper and singer/songwriter Dina Renee) join me to talk about listening to your inner voice when it comes to friends, dating, and career. Specifically - scary situations where intuition helped or saved us, going with your gut (or against it) while navigating tricky job situations, or how a gut feeling informed us in our interactions with people who have questionable intentions. We live in a society that's obsessed with control and power - these themes show up in everything from our relationships with our careers, our bodies, and our sex lives. This week's guest has a lot to say on the topic. Filmmaker Alex Lehmann joins Erin on the podcast to discuss the tough questions about the body positivity and body neutrality movements - can we look at these movements objectively? Can you identity with body neutrality and still accept compliments on your appearance? If we assign a value to beauty, does that also mean anything that doesn't fit into those parameters is not beautiful? How do we celebrate ourselves in a way that doesn't make another group "less than"? Is it possible to see people as they are with no judgement on their appearance? We also talk about the one kind of body shaming many of us still participate in - male genitalia shaming. How do we fix these problems? Is there an answer? We attempt to tackle these topics in this episode! www.patreon.com/erindarling instagram.com/ahotpizzaass

Erin also explains the importance of the image of her body she chose to use when she was asked to participate in the movement, and why the male gaze, and hyper sexualization of the female body is problematic especially when it comes to images we see on social media, in advertisements, or on TV and movie screens.

Welcome to Hot Pizza Ass with Erin Darling Torralva - a podcast where I'll be interviewing people about their obstacles on their journey to self-love. We'll cover topics like body image issues, sexual orientation, and the ways society makes us feel marginalized, and how inspirational people work through these challenges every day to shine their light, and become who they are meant to be in this world.
