Welcome to BookFarmers, a podcast about books, farming, and other interesting things. Bringing you what's tasty from farmstand to bookshelf.
Join us during the Covid-19 lockdown as we read Boccachio's The Decameron, a collection of 100 short stories told by characters who are sheltering together to escape the plague. Written in 1353, the book takes place over ten days, with ten stories told per day, centering on a daily theme. Funny, raunchy, and heartbreakingly timely, The Decameron makes the Middle Ages come alive to the Modern listener.
And now we get into the stories themselves! The first story is a bit longer than most others, so settle in for a nice, long read.
We'll continue with the Introduction to day the first. It's a long one, giving us both the context and characters we'll be exploring for the rest of our journey through the Decameron--we'll get a quick look at the personalities of our different narrators, and a feel for the writing of the book in general.
