Bluegrass United Church of Christ is a congregation in Lexington, Kentucky. We see the value and worth of all God's creation and practice our understanding of God's love toward everyone that "No matter who you are or where you are on life's journey, you are welcome here."
The first humans, Adam and Eve, made some bad decisions that they knew disappointed God and found themselves hiding in shame. Come to find out, even though there were consequences for their "sin," the God they were hiding from never stopped desiring to be with them and never stopped seeking them. These days it seems there is a heavy push by the more traditional and conservative-leaning Christian leaders to move America back to a more hardline version of Christian "law" and away from a more inclusive view of God and scriptures. Today, Pam helps us understand that God's intention is to lead us with love instead of strict laws and heavy-handed penalties.

Mother's Day is a wonderful celebration of all the women and others who have nurtured us, cared for us, loved us, and helped us through difficult times. It is the perfect occasion to show our love for those who've loved us so much. Then there are those who don't find reasons to celebrate Mother's Day - for whatever reason. But even for those, there is the promise that God loves us, cares for us, nurtures us, and helps us - so much so that our names have been written in the palm of God's hand.

We often try, but we know it is impossible to compare God's love to anything we can know or feel. God's love is not based on any conditions - there is nothing that can suppress it or keep it from being shown. Sometimes we have trouble reconciling the rejection we find in many churches with the radical inclusion we find in the bible's Easter story. Three days had passed. The women went to the tomb to anoint Jesus’ body, according to custom. No doubt the journey to the tomb was heavy. Perhaps they approached with heads lowered in defeat and grief. But then they looked up and it changed their lives. The barrier that they thought would be there was gone and what they discovered instead was life. Make no mistake, the powers-that-be in Jerusalem sat up and took notice at the actions of Jesus and his motley crew of palm-waving followers on that morning. It was a show of the "power" of love and injustice for the "least of these," in stark juxtaposition to the military might of the Roman rulers. It was a non-violent action featuring a man sitting on a donkey - an action that has offered hope throughout the ages. Will we sit up and take notice of the injustice of this world and work to eradicate it in ways that honor that first Palm Sunday parade? “When nothing else would help, love lifted me!” says the old Gospel song. To be lifted up is to be drawn into the love of God. Jesus drew all kinds of people to him during his short tenure on earth, drawing no boundaries for who was invited into that love. John 3:16 is probably one of the most famous and oft-quoted scriptures in the Bible. What follows that verse is important for our Lenten journey. God did not send Jesus to condemn the world, but to offer it saving light. The story of Jesus' response to the temple being made into a marketplace was profound and may have been another step toward his ultimate demise on the cross. He refers to raising up a new temple in three days - something his disciples later remembered as a foretelling of his resurrection. How might we raise up as the Body of Christ and be a holy temple - a holy dwelling place of God - in the world? We're excited to continue this new Lent series called What R U Up 2?

Jesus was very clear that following him might not be a smooth ride. He was bound to choose the just way, not the easy way, through life. To take up the cross was to lose one's life - to let go of certain expectations of safety and acceptance in order to stand for the Gospel message of love. On August 28, 1963, Dr. Martin Luther King gave what would become one of the great speeches of the twentieth century. Even though it seems our nation has taken steps backward in recent years, we still dare to march toward Dr. King's vision of America as a place that truly believes that all are created equal, is a place where former slaves and slave owners will sit together, where oppression will become freedom and justice, where everyone is judged by the content of their character, where while and Black children will join hands as brothers and sisters, where valleys will be exalted, mountains will be made low, rough places will be made plain, and crooked places will be made straight. For many, Christmas is over when the sun goes down on December 25th. But there is still more of the Christmas story to tell. Today we look at the experience that the magi had when they traveled from a faraway place in search of the rumored Christ child. We can be the gift of presence with those who are experiencing life as less-than-peaceful. But this might also be true of how we are personally feeling in this moment. Many of us who grew up around fundamentalist theology are familiar with what it means to be lost. We heard people talk about being lost and undone, lost without Christ, lost as in unsaved. Jesus told three stories in a row that were all about being lost - the lost sheep, the lost coin, and the lost boy. All three stories end with a party, a sheep party, a coin party, and a prodigal party.

There's an interesting story in the bible about a young man named Eutychus who happened to fall asleep while Paul the apostle waxed on what it means to be a follower of Jesus. The young man was sitting on a window ledge and fell three stories to his death. Even though Eutychus was considered to be on the margins, Paul stopped his talk to rush to the young man's aid. He fell on him, held him, and prayed for God's healing because that's what a person of God does when someone has fallen. Today, United Church of Christ Conference Minister Chad Abbott shares this story with us and how we can see it as an example and opportunity to mirror that extravagant love for those who have fallen around us.

We've probably all said it at some point; "If I knew then what I know now..." One of the great advantages of living a while is the number of opportunities we have to learn and adjust what we believe about our faith and religion, and our understanding of who Jesus is. It's hard to believe that it's been 22 years since 9/11. Many of us remember the events of that day but had the comfort of viewing it all from safe a distance from the actual destruction. But many didn't, including a man who grew up in Central Kentucky but experienced the horror of the day from his apartment just across the river from the doomed Twin Towers. All of us have times of unrest and chaos in our lives. Sometimes it seems those moments will never end. But it's reassuring to know that when we are in the middle of our personal storms, we are in the company of a God that loves us and would never leave us to survive alone. it's reassuring to know that when we are enduring the wind and rain, we are doing it as one of God's beloved. There is great disparity in our world, just as there was in the world that Jesus lived in centuries ago. There are several stories in the bible that speak to God's provision, but as believers, we count on God's ability to see us through difficult and needy times. Faith in God's radical, extravagant abundance is central to our relationship with God. But God also relies on us to do what we can for ourselves, but especially for others. That is how God's extravagant abundance is expressed - when we are available to and willing to express it.

Some of us are kinda spooked at the thought of God knowing everything about us. But it's probably because we've been warned of a god that gets some kind of strange delight out of taunting us with judgment, then punishing us for whatever kind of "sin" we've been secretly living in. But that's not the God we ever find in the bible. We can take comfort in knowing that God does in fact know us and takes great delight in loving us just the same.

Life is not and will never be problem free. We will know challenges and sometimes struggle to make sense of things. Things that should be simple can become complicated, and relationships that should be full of love can suddenly be in danger of ending. Most of us white Americans have only recently become educated on the significance of June 19th. As Black communities have celebrated Juneteenth, a day that could rightly be seen as America's true Independence Day, too many of us who never learned about the final pronouncements of freedom to the enslaved people of Texas simply lived without the knowledge and the inspiration it brings. Most Americans are also unfamiliar with Homer Plessy and John Marshall Harlan and their contributions to eliminating some of our nation's most racist laws. So let's learn together.

But just how righteous can it be to devalue and discriminate against a population of people who are already struggling to survive in a secular culture, much less a holy one? Sometimes it seems like Sunday will never get here - Easter Sunday that is. Jesus' followers really didn't understand or expect even that the Sunday following his execution would be so eventful. From their perspective, there wasn't really a Sunday surprise to look forward to. For us, we look back at that time and those days between Jesus' death and resurrection with anticipation of new life, new opportunities, and new hope. And that's what we need in 2023 - we need hope - resurrection hope.

We tend to think of Jesus' entry and ride into Jerusalem on a donkey as the beginning of the end for his earthy work and ministry. The events of that day will lead to his last meal with his followers, his betrayal, his execution, his burial, and his resurrection. But it seems we've forgotten the reason the people were most excited to see this peasant leader. It was because he was supposed to bring change. They believed he was coming to change the way the government and those in power were ruling over them. Today in the U.S., thousands of our children and citizens are dying senselessly because of guns. One of the most remarkable stories in the Bible is about a close friend of Jesus who had become ill and died. Jesus receives word of his friend's illness but lingers before going to check on him. When he finally arrives, his friend had been dead for several days. Then, in an act of compassion and community, Jesus commands those close by to remove the barriers that would hold a live man where a dead one should be. With the gravestone removed and the graveclothes loosed, Lazarus was now free to live again. It was an act of liberation and an act of coming together as community.

Recently, several state governments across the country, including here in Kentucky, have passed legislation targeting the LGBTQ community. Bills that limit public school teachers to only discussing heterosexual relationships around students, bills that place strict limitations and heavy restrictions on trans individuals, their parents and caretakers, and their doctors, bills that remove multicultural and LGBTQ history from school libraries and curriculums, and bills that make drag performers criminals for appearing in public have all either recently become law, or are in the process. Oftentimes we believe that we must “deserve” the love we receive. We work, work, work to get approval and to feel like our life is justified — pulling our own weight, thinking that whatever life we create, and love we get, is only what we ourselves can conjure up. But the scriptures today offer the image of God as our “keeper” — always helping, always present. Nicodemus has followed all the rules and done everything HE can do, and yet he is still looking for love — for tangible connection with God. Jesus says that he must be born “of the Spirit.” It’s not all up to simply “doing the right thing!” It is about allowing the Spirit to help birth love in our lives.

The invitation was couched within an offer to help a group of failed fishermen who'd spent the night pulling empty nets from the water. Their weariness and frustration was growing more and more intense as the night sky began to brighten with the morning sun. That's when Jesus invited them to throw their nets back into the water one more time. After a moment of protest, they obliged and ended up with nets overflowing - all because they heeded the invitation.

Friends are important. Friends make sure we are not facing our issues alone. They provide support, encouragement, correction, and companionship. Jesus knew how important it was to have friends. When he called those who would be his disciples, he watched as they relied on each other and became fast friends. At the end of his life, it was the message that Jesus wanted them to know - they were his friends.

Twelve years ago this week, Marsha J. Moors-Charles started a new work in Lexington, Kentucky that continues today. She envisioned a place where questions could be asked, doubts would be welcomed, and healing could take place - especially for those who'd been injured by past church experiences. We are proud of the work we are able to do, and the healing that has taken place for so many. Today, as we celebrate our anniversary, we circle around a song that was composed out of despair but encouraged a civil rights leader to march on, fight on, and never give up. Many of us grew up believing that the moment of Jesus' birth was a crowded affair. Besides Mary, Joseph, and the baby of course, we place shepherds, wise men, angels, and livestock inside the barn and hang a star on top. We don't know exactly who was there or what that moment looked like, but we have strong reason to believe that the sages who brought aromatic gifts to the young Emmanuel had been traveling for a long time to find him. We call their arrival the Epiphany, and it was a special moment in the Christmas story. Guided by a shining star, they found him.

Our Christmas Eve service is always a special time to settle into the story of the coming Hope. It is a hope and a promise brought to us by the child who would grow to bring a message of peace, deliverance, and love. Before there was religion, a church, or even the bible, there was the earth and nature. The very first words ever known of, according to the Christian tradition, were uttered by the creating God. Those words spoke nature into being, set the planet into motion, and immediately set humanity up with the perfect sanctuary. There once was a farmer who went out to scatter seed. He was either really sloppy about it or just didn't mind that a lot of it was going places it could never survive. As a matter of fact, most of the seed was landing on unfriendly ground - only about a quarter of it made it to healthy ground. However, that does not mean that all the other ground was not holy. God's presence can be found even in the inhospitable ground.

In whatever currency we use, our economy is often unlike God's. Grace, compassion, worth, righteousness, sin... we all have notions of what all of those mean, but all of our notions are based on something very earthly and often not very "godly." The world changed on the morning of September 11, 2001. In New York, Washington, DC, and Shanksville, PA, hijacked planes were used as instruments of mass destruction, but at an unassuming airport in a small town in far eastern Canada, dozens of planes bound for the U.S. were forced to land. When they did, they found a community that would come together and take on the largest challenge imaginable. Almost 7,000 people from all over the world found themselves stranded in Gander, and the story of how the town's people loved them and served them is both beautiful and inspiring.

According to the beginning verses in the Bible, the earth's inhabitants got off to a pretty rocky start, at least after the first several pages. It seems it didn't take long into God's new creation before humans and human relationships turned God's new paradise into a sea of mistrust and doubt and turmoil. Just like many of the people in the scriptures that God called into the good work of ministry, we sometimes find reasons to say "no" to that call. We feel inadequate, unprepared, and ill-equipped to take on the challenge of being God's voice, hands, and feet in the world. You never know who God may use to teach you about yourself. Several years ago Kenny met a young lady on a flight to Minneapolis who changed his life. It wasn't until sometime later that he realized just how impactful that chance encounter had been on his attitude and his spirit. Is pride a sin? It could be if it is arrogant pride. We are warned several times in the bible to avoid pride and to not be proud. But is pride really something we should be afraid of? If any church desires to be relevant, it must speak to the issues at hand. If any church wishes to make a difference in the world, it must stand with those who have been abused and marginalized. It is a calling that, when heard, cannot be ignored by a church that seeks to be thoughtful and caring. Moving in that compassion is moving with radical vision. It's a lesson we need to learn on this Juneteenth.

Try as they might, the religious leaders of Jesus' day were never able to use Jesus' words against him. That's mainly because he used their words to prove his point. When the religious leaders attempted to use a woman accused of prostitution to force Jesus into angry judgment, the tables were turned when he told them that only the sinless and pure should start the punishment. In the end, religion walked away and mercy was left standing next to the accused woman.

Until the experience we read about in the second chapter of Acts, Pentecost was only a traditional feast day celebrated by the Jewish people. Then, fifty days after Passover, the same time Jesus was crucified, the Spirit descended on the people gathered in the Upper Room, and the definition of Pentecost was changed forever, especially by those whose faith is Christian. And from that day, Pentecost has been equated with power.

"How do you define 'neighbor?'" "Who is my neighbor?" These were questions that were asked of Jesus when he was instructing his followers to minister to those around them. Jesus Saves! Many of us who've grown up in church, especially the more fundamentalist evangelical ones, have heard that phrase. To us, it simply meant that Jesus died so we could go to heaven - for many of us, the goal was more about avoiding hell. But have we missed the true meaning of those words? Is there more to them? Woke is a term we seem to hear a lot lately. What does it mean? What does it mean especially in the context of our faith as followers of Christ? Sometimes we question if all of Jesus' decisions were good ones. Why would he choose to surround himself with people so prone to making bad decisions? But he knew just what he was doing. And he knew what he was doing when he asked one of his closest friends to affirm his love by giving him a chance to know God's forgiveness and his own self-forgiveness before he was even aware he needed it.

It's Easter Sunday. During the season of Lent, and this last week in Holy Week, we focused on growing gardens, tending the life that is right in front of us, rather than constantly climbing ladders of what this world defines as success. We have been embracing “good enough” lives and “good enough” selves that are worthy of love, no matter what. We have been acknowledging the suffering that is a natural part of life, and we have practiced compassion as we deal with the realities and limitations that invite us to let go of perfectionism and the incessant drive toward something other than our own real, holy, and “blessed-regardless” lives. And now we encounter Easter. It is a day we proclaim that while death is a part of life–even little “deaths” along the way of dreams, of love, of the way we thought life would go–even though this is a part of life, we are part of a faith that invites us to consider that the Good Gardener is always tending us, abiding with us, beyond any kind of death that faces us.

This is the sixth Sunday of Lent. It is Palm Sunday. We stand at the precipice of Lent and Holy Week. This day moves from shouting and praising to a time of crying and lament. The drama of the story of Jesus’ last week reads like the book of our lives. Feeling hopeful one moment, we plummet the next as we deal with disappointment, danger, and grief. God’s incarnation on earth was not immune from this roller-coaster we call life. One thing we know, when the going gets rough, the last thing on our minds is climbing the ladder of self-improvement. We just want to survive, to be comforted, to have our pain known and embraced. And so we turn from the isolation of perfection and turn toward deep love. It is never too late to nurture the garden of relationships, for we are all a group project.

This is the fifth Sunday of Lent. The story of Jesus includes many moments around tables, as this was part of his ritual of relationship even to the last. In this fifth week of the Lent season, we will hear a story of love and devotion from the disciple Mary, directed at Jesus at the table. As we will see, Jesus tries to prepare his beloved companions for his death. Talk of death is like a gut-punch to many of us; we would rather believe we and our loved ones are invincible, are able to will ourselves into being strong. We all know that isn’t always how the story goes. We are fragile. Our lives, like the plants in the gardens we tend, are susceptible to elemental dangers and a life-cycle of letting go in order to live.

Each week of this Lent season, we are focusing on ways that we can practice a counter-cultural theology that emphasizes the beauty and grace of the reality of life-right-now rather than waiting with increasing judgment to reach some vision of a perfected existence. This is the third Sunday of Lent. As we continue our look at what it means to release oppressive expectations about perfection in our lives and in our faith, this week we turn to a harmful idea that the prescription for our fear of failure is to simply work harder. As the book Good Enough reminds us, “We might feel we are climbing an ‘endless staircase’ of achievement, for high grades or success...[in] caregiving, work, or social pressure.” This Lent, we are taking some time to stop climbing ladders and staircases, to tend our souls slowly and lovingly, tilling the soil and fertilizer, and embracing our holy, “good enough,” lives.

This is the second Sunday of Lent. We continue our movement through the Lent season this week with another kind of “letting go.” This week we lament that so much in life is out of our control. This is frustrating to us and so sometimes we have been tempted to believe the sayings that tell us if we just “think positively,” we can turn it all around. Yet our experience tells us that this doesn’t always work. Let us turn ladder-climbing toward the expectation of a perfect life into garden-tending, nurturing “what is” and embracing our holy, good enough, lives.

Lent has begun, and this is the first Sunday. We find ourselves hungry for many things that we believe will bring us satisfaction. In today’s Gospel, the devil lays a bet that Jesus will jump at the chance for glory, fame, and the quick fix. Who wouldn’t? But Jesus keeps up the pithy one-liners long enough that the Tempster just has to slink away. What are the temptations that catch your ear, singing out promises that your life should be more special than it is? What if ordinary life is already holy–as is?

It's the Sunday before Lent. The days leading to Ash Wednesday are filled with indulgence and joy. At BUCC, we gathered around tables and had a big country breakfast. We enjoyed the fellowship, the food, and the opportunity to worship alongside the meal. It was morning worship in a different way, but it was worship. Sometimes the branches of different trees touch each other, often they do not. In our view, they look like separate beings doing separate work, surviving on their own. What we don't see are the many roots below the earth that are reaching out, different roots of different trees, intertwined, supporting each other, nourishing each other. What are your thoughts about social media? For most folks, it usually depends on what they saw last, who posted it, and what they were trying to say. One of the dangers of social media is that it causes us to compare our lives and worlds with everyone else's. It's an unfair comparison because most of us share the best parts of our lives. It's a new year! That means the expectation to set new goals and accomplish new things. What do we do with those expectations, especially when the usual outcome is not so good? We try anyway. And sometimes in trying, we find unexpected blessings along the way. That's part of the Samaritan woman's story. She went to the well one day expecting nothing more than a bucket of water. Words are important. Over the course of our nation's history, some of our most challenging moments have found us in need of words to comfort us, calm us, help us grieve, and to inspire us. Many of our national leaders have stepped up as leaders should and offered that kind of support. In September of 2015, a gunman joined a prayer group at the Emanuel AME Church in Charleston, SC, and opened fire. Seventeen church members died, including Pastor Clementa C. Pinckney. In the days following, President Barack Obama offered words of comfort and hope, and he ended his speech by singing "Amazing Grace."

Back in the early 2000s, Lee Domann wrote a song from personal experience about the regret he was feeling for bullying a classmate as a kid. The song, "Howard Gray," ended up becoming somewhat of a catalyst for anti-bullying campaigns all across the country. Today, Kenny tells the story of the song, and how that bullied kid was more God-like than anyone could have guessed.

The scriptures challenge us as believers to be God's change agents in the world, to do all we can to make the world a better place, especially for those who have been wounded. Many of us grew up in a very strict church and religious environment. The rules of our faith told us what we were allowed to do and what we weren't, and the "do not" list was usually pretty long. Now that we have examined and have a better understanding of who God is and what God expects from us, we've discovered that if there are any rules, they can be best summed up with Jesus' own words, to love God, love others, and love ourselves. Keeping those rules goes a long way toward helping us deal with the harsh and binding religious juxtaposition we face.

Anyone old enough to remember knows where they were on September 11, 2001. They remember the morning being interrupted and the rest of the day being consumed with horrific reports of hijacked planes and catastrophic deaths and heroes in action. In today's message, Kenny shares the words of a friend, Tim Brumfield, who lived that day on the ground, in real-time in New York City. In the end, the horrors of 9/11 gave an opportunity and rise to a group that would make it possible for us to see September 12th.

The Covid pandemic has taken a lot from us. The most important and the most tragic has been the lives we've lost as a result of the disease. We've had to do without many other things this last year and a half, and one of the most meaningful has been the loss of human interaction and human touch. There is so much that can be gained and felt when we're able to touch one another - when we can embrace each other and hug. Today, Kenny tells the story of the hug known around the world when a wayward son shunned the guidance of his loving parent and left home. When he found himself hungry and alone, he made the hard decision to return to his father and accept the treatment he deserved. But instead of coming home to judgment and shame, he found himself in the arms of a loving parent ready to forgive. He came home to a hug.

Jesus had a special relationship with Lazarus and his sisters Mary and Martha. The story that Pam shares with us today is one of pain and loss, death and resurrection. Even as close as they were, Jesus hesitated before responding when he heard that Lazarus had a sickness that was about to take his life. Why did he wait? Why did he hesitate? Pam is about to tell us.

Sometimes we may struggle with God's methods, especially when we look back at the episodes of the First Testament. We preach about a God of love, but the bible also includes stories of a god that seems to endorse violence to achieve the best end. The politics of recent years has exposed divisions and disagreements that many of us didn't know existed, or at least not as intensely. People who once got along, or simply agreed to disagree, have found themselves at impassioned impasses. Some once close family members and friends have walked away from longtime relationships. The Covid pandemic has caused even more tension as the debate over masks and vaccinations moves the conversation from the medical field to the political. Whichever side you find yourself on, it's likely that your judgment of the other's point of view is sharp and critical. Today, Kenny encourages us to see the human behind the argument and to try and resist the urge to judge.

Kenny shares a Max Lucado story he read many years ago about a parakeet named Chippy. All was well in Chippy's world until the day he was swallowed up by a vacuum cleaner. That was the day that Chippy stopped singing. These days, we sometimes find it hard to sing. The law of the First Testament provided a framework and a standard for the people of God to live by. The intention of the law was to keep the people safe and reliant on their god. The law was also their religion, and we know that religion can put you in and keep you in a box. Today, Pam reminds us of the story of King Ahab, his wife Jezebel, and the Prophet Elijah. These characters ended up being the main players in a fascinating story of fear, pain, and loneliness. It was only when the prophet found himself in a place of quiet and stillness that he was able to hear God and feel God's assurance.

True friendship is priceless. According to a recent survey, the average American has about 16 friends, but most people say that only half of those are people they enjoy spending time with. There are many stories of precious friendships in the scriptures, which means having friend relationships is very important. Philosophers, poets, psychologists, and even songwriters tell that one of the most valuable things we can have in our lives is friends.

Dr. Lisa W. Davison, Professor of Hebrew Bible at Phillips Theological Seminary in Tulsa, Oklahoma brought an accurate understanding and an honest perspective to what the Bible really says about gender and homosexuality.
Dr. Davison's expertise lies in the fields of Hebrew Bible (Christian First Testament), Women in the Bible, Sexuality and the Bible, Contemporary issues (justice, gender, race, economics) and the Bible, and Christian use and mis-use of the Hebrew Bible (Christian First Testament). Her writings include the book, Preaching the Women of the Bible, along with commentaries, essays and entries in major theological books and bible commentaries. She is currently working on her second book, this one about women in the Hebrew Bible who are remembered without being described as mothers or “barren”.
