An open discussion on art and design education, creativity and design thinking by designer and lecturer Lefteris Heretakis, of the New Art school. Seeking solutions to contemporary #art and #design #education challenges.
In this episode of Design Education Talks, I am joined by graphic designer, publisher, editor and educator Esen Karol for a thoughtful conversation about what it means to educate designers in an age of distraction, artificial intelligence and accelerating change. Drawing on her experience at Pratt Institute in New York and through her independent cultural criticism journal Manifold, Esen reflects on the changing role of the design educator, the importance of editorial thinking, and why the future of design education depends on cultivating attention, curiosity and meaningful human relationships rather than simply teaching software or preparing students for employment.
Together we explore the value of studio culture, deep reading, writing, publishing and critique as essential components of creative education. Esen argues that students need more than technical skills or polished portfolios; they need opportunities to experience the world directly, develop confidence in their own actions, and discover their unique voice through making, reflection and dialogue. The conversation examines how joy, discipline and slow observation can become powerful teaching methods, and why publishing remains one of the richest educational frameworks for developing critical thinking, collaboration and cultural awareness.
More than a discussion about graphic design, this episode is an exploration of the future of art and design education itself. We consider how schools can resist standardisation, rebuild communities of learning, and create spaces where students learn not only to communicate, but to perceive, question and think independently. It is a conversation for educators, designers, students, researchers and anyone interested in how creativity is formed, how culture is transmitted, and why the most important work of education may still be helping people learn how to see.
Since its inception in 2019, Design Education Talks podcast has served as a dynamic platform for the exchange of insights and ideas within the realm of art and design education. This initiative sprang from a culmination of nearly a decade of extensive research conducted by Lefteris Heretakis. His rich background, intertwining academia, industry, and student engagement, laid the foundation for a podcast that goes beyond the conventional boundaries of educational discourse.

Simon Collins is one of the most internationally experienced figures working at the intersection of design education, creative leadership and innovation. His career spans global brands including Nike, Zegna and Polo Ralph Lauren, leadership roles at Parsons School of Design, advisory work with governments and major institutions, and his current position as Chief Creative Officer of the Design Innovation Institute Shanghai. Having lived and worked across Europe, the United States and China, Simon brings a rare perspective on how creativity, education and industry intersect across cultures.
In this conversation, we explore the evolving purpose of art and design education at a time when artificial intelligence, globalisation and rapidly changing industries are forcing educators to rethink long-held assumptions. Rather than focusing on software or technology, Simon argues that the true purpose of a design school is to teach students how to learn, how to remain curious, and how to approach complex problems with confidence and imagination. Drawing on decades of experience as both practitioner and educator, he reflects on design thinking, innovation, sustainability, industry collaboration, educational philosophy and the relationship between Western and Eastern approaches to creative education.
This is a conversation about far more than fashion or design. It is about the qualities that make creative people valuable in an uncertain world: curiosity over certainty, learning over knowing, and thoughtful action over fashionable rhetoric. Whether you are an educator, student, designer, researcher or creative leader, Simon Collins offers an honest and thought-provoking perspective on what art and design education can become when it refuses to separate imagination from reality, and creativity from responsibility.

Graham Fink is one of those rare creative figures whose career refuses to fit neatly into a single title. Creative director, art director, writer, artist, technologist, musician, filmmaker and educator, his practice moves fluidly across disciplines, cultures, and technologies. From global advertising leadership roles to experimental art-making, from working with robotics and AI to developing tools that allow him to draw using only his eyes, Graham’s work is driven by a restless curiosity and a deep belief in the power of ideas to cut through sameness.
Alongside his commercial and artistic practice, Graham has spent decades committed to creative education and mentorship. Through initiatives such as Think Different and the relaunch of his influential Art School, he has challenged conventional models of learning, advocating for experimentation, cross-pollination, and thinking before polish. In this conversation, we explore creativity as a way of seeing the world, the dangers of mediocrity in an age of speed and AI, and why difference, curiosity, and discomfort remain essential tools for the next generation of creatives.

Our guest today is Jan Kubasiewicz, Professor of Design at Massachusetts College of Art and Design and one of the most influential figures in the development of dynamic media and motion design education. Born and educated in Poland, Jan has spent decades working at the intersection of visual language, time, information, and systems. He is the founder and long-time coordinator of the Dynamic Media Institute at MassArt, a programme that helped define how motion, interaction, and data could be taught as core design literacies rather than technical specialisms. Alongside his academic work, Jan’s practice spans exhibition making, research, and authorship, with his work exhibited internationally across Europe, the United States, and Asia.
Beyond the classroom, Jan has played a crucial role in shaping design discourse through lectures, publications, and curatorial projects at institutions including Harvard University, where he serves as an affiliate of the Minda de Gunzburg Center for European Studies and curator of the Giedrojć Gallery. His writing on motion literacy, information design, and dynamic media pedagogy has become foundational reading for design educators worldwide. In this conversation, we explore how design functions as a language over time, why research is inseparable from practice, and what it means to educate designers for complexity, responsibility, and meaning in a world increasingly defined by motion and data.

Nikolaus Hafermaas is a designer, educator, artist, and lifelong experimenter whose career moves fluidly between practice and pedagogy, Europe and the United States, the analogue and the digital. A self-described classic car romantic and spirited driver, his work is grounded in physical experience, curiosity, and resistance to comfort—values that shape both how he designs and how he teaches.
Growing up in Kassel, Hafermaas encountered art early as a source of awe rather than instruction. With a father who was an early computer engineer and a mother who worked as an illustration artist, his formative years unfolded between technology and craft. Childhood beach holidays spent building improvised objects from flotsam and jetsam laid the foundations for a mindset rooted in making, hacking, and learning by doing.
At eighteen, he left Kassel for Berlin to study Visual Communication at UdK, choosing breadth over specialisation at a time when design education favoured narrow paths. Alongside his studies, he became a partner at the emerging agency Triad Berlin, later working on cultural exhibitions, expo pavilions, and large-scale brand experiences for institutions and global companies. These spatial and narrative projects informed his conviction that graphic design cannot be confined to surfaces or screens.
Teaching emerged organically through talks, workshops, and his involvement in Berlin’s Young Creative Industries during the city’s “poor but sexy” era. In 2002, he became a professor in Bremen, embracing an integrated design approach shaped by trial, error, and what he calls productive ignorance. This trajectory culminated at ArtCenter College of Design, where he reimagined the Graphic Design programme as Transmedia Design, an education in orchestrating graphics, motion, interaction and space into holistic experiences.
Across institutions in Europe, the U.S., and Mexico, Hafermaas has championed fearlessness, collaboration, and critical engagement with technology. He challenges students to leave their comfort zones, distrust convenience, and resist tools that promise speed without depth. For him, design education is not about producing specialists for a market, but designers able to navigate complexity, uncertainty, and responsibility with courage and empathy.
A mentor who insists that experimentation and play are necessities rather than luxuries, Nikolaus Hafermaas continues to push design education beyond screens, silos, and safe answers, toward learning that remains restless, human, and alive.

Christian Dominique, co-founder of Digital Wellness and trained neuroscientist from McGill University, is on a mission to redesign education systems that have forgotten how to cultivate joy. In this compelling episode of Design Education Talks, Dominique reveals a startling statistic: adults laugh and smile more than ten times less than children, and traces this "domestication" directly to outdated educational models that prioritise compliance over creativity. Drawing on cutting-edge neuroscience, practical philosophy, and design thinking, he shares frameworks for building happiness at individual, relational, and communal levels, while offering a candid assessment of where educational innovation is thriving and where it's stagnating. Dominique also previews his pipeline of specialised AI wellness tools, including an education-focused platform launching in summer 2025. Whether you're an educator, designer, administrator, or simply someone who believes schools should inspire anticipation rather than dread, this wide-ranging conversation will challenge your assumptions about what's possible when we design learning environments with human flourishing at the centre. Listen now to discover why play isn't frivolous, why art and design must remain connected, and how removing systemic blockers can help students, and all of us, rediscover the inherent joy of being alive and learning.

Today on Design Education Talks, we’re joined by John McFaul , Executive Creative Director, Brand Consultant, Educator, and one of those rare, restless creatives who has never quite fitted into the neat boxes the world tries to offer. From the Wirral to New York, from art school misfit to brand visionary, John's career is a vivid testament to curiosity, risk-taking, and cultural immersion.
He began his journey believing he was a failure for choosing Art & Design over Oxford or Cambridge , until his foundation year transformed everything. Since then, John’s path has included studying at Kingston, a brief stint at Central Saint Martins, and pioneering the early fusion of illustration, digital tools and boundary-breaking design. He co-founded Black Convoy, then launched McFaulStudio, working with clients like Nike, Levi’s, New Balance, Brand Jordan, and more , often blending art, fashion, photography, and culture into truly genre-defying work.
After closing McFaul-Day in 2024, having led a decade-long partnership with New Balance and other major lifestyle brands, John now finds himself at a turning point , what he calls the “Second Mountain.” Diagnosed with ADHD and fuelled by a desire to create work with more purpose and community impact, he is exploring new models of creative leadership and education.
In the classroom, John is known for bringing raw honesty, boundless cultural insight, and a powerful message: that creativity is messy, emotional, and deeply human. He speaks openly about failure, process, and the dangers of marketised education, and he champions a design education rooted in risk, curiosity, and authenticity.
Whether consulting global brands or inspiring the next generation, John McFaul remains a passionate advocate for creative freedom, experimentation, and meaningful cultural engagement.
Welcome, John.

I run MA illustration and teach on BA illustration. Also supervise practice-based PhDs. Specialism is in illustration/artistbooks/zines and teaching. My own creative practice is mostly as in artists book /artzines and as an artist. I work both digitally and also with real materials like drawing, collage and print. I think social awareness and research skills are an important part of teaching illustration. I initiated and curate the UoP Artzine collection Zineopolis, this is a research hub and a collection of over 500 artzines from lots of countries and makers. I include student zines as well. This resource is used for teaching (we have zine modules) but also to generate staff research both in conceptualising and disseminating. There’s a summary on the REF database since this was an IMAPCT case study in REF21

Gwen van den Eijnde is a French–Dutch artist and costume designer based in the United States. For the past decade, he has been teaching apparel design at the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD) in Providence, where he currently serves as Head of Programme.
While pursuing his artistic research at the École Supérieure des Arts Décoratifs in Strasbourg, he began creating costumes as sculptural works. His practice explores how the act of wearing a costume can transform one’s presence in space. Through performances, installations, and photography, he has constructed visual worlds and atmospheres in which the costumes form part of a complete scenography. His performances have taken place internationally—in artist residencies, museums, schools, festivals, theatres, and workshops—often in collaboration with practitioners from a wide range of disciplines.
In 2011, he led a workshop in the fashion department of the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw, where he introduced students to his interest in Polish traditional dress. This experience marked the beginning of his teaching career. He later taught textile design at the Haute École des Arts du Rhin in Mulhouse (France) and has carried out creative research for fashion houses including Hermès and Tiffany & Co.
In 2022 and again in 2024, he designed costumes for chamber operas produced by the Boston Early Music Festival: L’Idylle sur la Paix by Jean-Baptiste Lully, La Fête de Rueil by Marc-Antoine Charpentier, and Don Quichotte auf der Hochzeit des Comacho by Georg Philipp Telemann. Continuing to expand his research into folk and historical dress, material culture, and embroidery techniques, van den Eijnde will take part in a major group exhibition on eighteenth-century fashion and its contemporary legacy in Paris in 2026.

As an illustration educator, few figures stand out as boldly, and as impactfully, as Brian Grimwood. His work is not merely a reflection of evolving visual trends; it is a catalyst for change that helped define what modern illustration could become.
In an era when hyper-realistic, tightly controlled imagery dominated the commercial landscape, Grimwood dared to introduce a freer, more expressive line, loose, lyrical, and unmistakably human. Emerging in the 1970s, Grimwood’s early illustrations marked a radical departure from the status quo. His influences ranged from Chinese brush painting to jazz improvisation, and this breadth of reference infused his work with a spontaneity that felt both fresh and fearless.
It’s no exaggeration to say that Brian Grimwood didn’t just break the rules, he rewrote them, making space for a new kind of illustrative voice: emotional, intuitive, and full of personality.
His work is invaluable for teaching students about the importance of authorship in illustration. Brian’s style is instantly recognisable, yet it continually evolves, a powerful lesson in the value of experimentation over stagnation. He reminds us that technical skill is only part of the equation; the rest is vision, energy, and the willingness to take risks.
Brian Grimwood's impact, however, extends far beyond the page. In 1983, he co-founded The Central Illustration Agency (CIA), a visionary move that professionalised the role of the illustrator and gave artists greater control over their careers.
CIA was not just an agency, it was a platform that challenged exploitative norms and advocated for illustrators as creative equals in the commercial process. For educators and students alike, CIA's history offers a compelling narrative about the power of creative entrepreneurship and community.
His collaborations with global clients, Apple, the Beatles, The New Yorker, British Airways, Saatchi & Saatchi, among many others, prove that expressive, idiosyncratic work can succeed at the highest levels of commercial design. He navigated the often-precarious intersection of art and commerce without compromise, a feat that continues to inspire.
As a teacher, I often return to Grimwood when introducing students to the concept of visual voice. His work defies categorisation, equal parts fine art, editorial design, advertising, and storytelling and it speaks to the enduring power of dra

Born and raised in Hamburg, Germany, Sven Ingmar Thies studied graphic design at Braunschweig University of Art and completed his final thesis in Tokyo and Yokohama.
Since his time at university, he has focused on a holistic design approach that seamlessly connects to other design disciplines, other specialist areas or even to handicrafts. This conviction was intensified further by two professional engagements at Henrion, Ludlow & Schmidt in London, where brands were holistically developed, and at Kitayama Institute in Tokyo, where he learnt about the interplay between architecture and design during a two-year postgraduate scholarship.
Besides being involved in project-related work for brand agencies Landor (today, Landor & Fitch) and Enterprise IG (today, Superunion), he founded Thies Design in 1998, which develops tailored brand experiences for enterprises and institutions (www.thiesdesign.com).
In addition to his professional activities, Sven Ingmar Thies has taught graphic design at the University of Applied Arts Vienna’s “Class of Ideas” since 2011.
He is author and editor of the book “Teaching Graphic Design”.

We are delighted to welcome back Phil Cleaver for this landmark 100th episode. A distinguished and multi award-winning figure in the world of graphic design, Phil has long been recognised as one of the field’s true heavyweights. A protégé of Anthony Froshaug, Phil refined his design and typographic expertise under the guidance of Alan Fletcher at Pentagram, Wim Crouwel at TD in the Netherlands, and Michael Wolff at Wolff Olins.
In 1984, he was appointed Creative Director of Branding at Allied International Designers. Just a few years later, in 1987, he founded CleaverLandor, a specialist design consultancy whose rapid growth eventually prompted Phil to return to hands-on creative work. In 1992, he established et al, a close-knit consultancy of like-minded design professionals.
Phil is a Fellow of the Chartered Society of Designers, a founding trustee of The Monotype Museum, a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts, and Professor of the Creative Industries at Middlesex University’s School of Art and Design.
He lectures internationally on design, and his early typographic work is preserved in the St Bride Printing Library. His book designs are held in the permanent collection of the V&A Museum’s National Art Library. In 2012, Phil was invited by the esteemed creative director David Holmes to collaborate as typographer and book designer on a special edition celebrating eight decades of Sir Peter Blake’s life and The Macallan – working alongside Sir Peter and four other master artists.
Phil is also the author and designer of What They Didn’t Teach You in Design School, published by Ilex Press and distributed by Thames & Hudson.

We recommend that you go over to our youtube channel and watch this particular episode.
This is the 4th and final episode in the series. Brad talks more in-depth about his work and how he took his work to the 3d dimension and beyond.
Bradford Hansen-Smith spent the first half of his life as a sculptor; then it changed. Inspired by the work of Buckminster Fuller he took ten years to educate himself in geometry and math seeing that it all goes back to the image we draw of the circle. The next thirty-two years he has been exploring folding circles with people interested. Without any degree, and no certification, he taught folding circles in and out of classrooms, from first grade through college level, working with teachers, presenting internationally a new approach to geometry and mathematics, a new way to do and think about what we do. During that time, he has written seven books and has published papers on folding circles.
He calls this approach Wholemovement, folding the circle for information. It is comprehensive through the hand-on experience of folding the circle as unity and observing what is revealed. This is about the transforming changes of order and organization all in one place; nothing is added or taken away. Information is not constructed or put into the circle. Through a principled sequence of folding, observing, and reforming, the directives for the process are inherent to unity in the circle, it is whole. Folding the circle demonstrates spherical unity beyond all other shapes and forms. It is about learning to see what is not seen, attending to what we do, and to use what is revealed to discover what we do not know. This provides any folder with experience to know circles are not what we are told they are, they are so much more: as it is with most information we are given.

Fraser Muggeridge is a graphic designer and director of Fraser Muggeridge studio based in London. Throughout a wide range of formats, from artists’ books and exhibition catalogues to posters, marketing material, exhibitions, websites, film titles and music, the studio prioritises artists’ and writers’ content over the imposition of a signature style. By allowing images and texts to sustain their own intent and impact, each project is approached with typographic form and letterform playing a key role in arriving at a sympathetic yet subtly alluring object.
Fraser Muggeridge founded and is a tutor at Typography Summer School, a week-long programme of typographic study for recent graduates and professionals, held in London (since 2010) and New York (since 2013). He is a visiting lecturer at The University of Reading (since 2003) on the MA Book Design Course and visiting professor at Iceland University of the Arts, Reykjavík, Iceland. He was appointed Professor of Design at Leeds Beckett University in 2023.
He completed a practice-based PhD entitled ‘A Knowing Wrongness: Innovation in graphic design through combinations of traditional mastery and deliberately unconventional techniques’ at RMIT, Melbourne, Australia, in January 2022.
Work is held at the Special Collections at Chelsea College of Arts Library, London; Tate, London; The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; The Museum of Modern Art Library, New York; British High Commission Dhaka, Bangladesh and The Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam.

Tony graduated from Middlesex University in 1984 gaining a first in graphic design. He began work in the studio of his tutor Peter Gill. Eventually this association formalised into the design consultancy Root 2 Design (https://www.root2design.com). The consultancy was involved in many large-scale initiatives such as devising the visual identity and implementation for the London Research Centre. Tony was both an associate of Root 2 Design but also worked in a freelance capacity with clients such as the Icebreaker music ensemble; Decca Records; Andrew Haig Associates and the Institute for the Study of Drug Dependency.
Tony co-organised the International Society of Typographic Designers (ISTD) lecture series between 2000-2003. The series culminated with a lecture by Rosmarie Tissi held at the Cochrane Theatre. He co-organised the accompanying 100+3 posters exhibition from Siegfried Odermatt’s collection. In 2017 Tony interviewed pre-eminent book designer Jost Hochuli in front of a sell-out audience. At this event he was awarded a Fellowship of the ISTD. He was the former managing editor of ISTD’s Typographic journal. He has been a board member and is currently on the education committee.
In 2004 Tony co-curated Future Map for the University of the Arts London, which was part of the London Design Festival. In 2007 he was commissioned by innovative music ensemble Icebreaker to design the packaging of a commemorative CD for the composer Philip Glass.
In 2012, Tony presented a paper at Cyprus University of Technology's first International Conference on Semiotics and Visual Communication. He was invited onto the organising and scientific committee for the 2020 conference. He was also featured in the film Visual Rhetoric, a collaborative project between London College of Communication and the London School of Economics (LSE).
Tony has written numerous articles for publications such as Eye, Computer Arts and Typographic. In 2016 he was published in Taking a Line for a Walk (assignments in design education).
Tony has taught in many capacities over the years. His tutors Andrew Haig and Peter Gill both maintained professional practice whilst undertaking visiting lecturer roles. This connection between design education and the associated profession was formed early on in his outlook as a result. Tony cites Geoff White as an influence on his approach to the teaching of fundamental principles of design.
Tony was course leader for the Postgraduate Certificate and Diploma Design for Visual Communication courses at London College of Communication, University of the Arts London.
In 2020 Tony decided to embark on a new phase, away from employment in formal higher education, to explore his own personal work and collaborations locally with independent educators at The Margate School. He is currently completing a book with Ian McLaren on the subject of post World War Two Modernist graphic design in Britain. The book encompasses: societal developments; important schools; influential organisations; profiles of key individuals; and a discussion relating to an ongoing attitudinal leg

I studied for five years in total at art school in the 1970s, Graphic Design and Illustration. At Maidstone College of Art my tutors included Greenaway Medal-winning Gerald Rose and, by contrast, Brian Eno. I worked solely as a freelance illustrator for 15-20 years, across most areas of the field while gradually takin on part-time teaching alongside my practice, eventually taking on Course Leader role for BA Illustration.
I was always mystified as to why so little attention was given to children's book illustration and decided to design and take through validation the world's first MA Children's Book Illustration programme, which grew rapidly to a cohort of 180 students from around the world.
My driving force has been to widen awareness of the importance of illustration (especially authorial illustration) and drawing in the university context and in public perception, as an important academic and cultural field

Shalini Prasad is an educator, integrative designer, brand consultant, and graphic artist. She runs her own design practice under DeSha Consulting and teaches visual communication and typography at the College of Art and Design at Lesley University. In addition to her professional and academic roles, she is a classical trained dancer, and actor. She loves traversing the many modalities of the creative arts along with the performing arts and believes that each informs the other, fuelling her overall nebulous, no man's lands, trans-disciplinary artistic ideology (that she has finally made peace with! :)
Shalini’s collaborative and inclusive methodology enable her to seamlessly grasp, traverse, and interpret various modalities of design in both two and three dimensions, while fearlessly dismissing conventional boundaries, whether she is designing a brand, a space, or a curriculum. With over twenty years of diverse experience, an interdisciplinary education in architecture, graphic design and art, she demonstrates a deep passion for storytelling and an innate artistic and analytical sensibility, whether she is studying the minutiae of typography with her students or designing larger movements of design in space for her clients.
Shalini moved to the US twenty years ago from India, having lived in 15 cities including England, the Middle East, and the US, with Boston as her home for the past three. You can find her in a happy trance doing the following: improv cooking, singing, home decorating, doing word games, running, playing the guitar, solving math riddles and reading memoirs.

We are born with a powerful integrated set of tools and capabilities that help us read the world. The visual is often dominant, critical, logical, relevant and hard-wired. Schooling, however, privileges text by closing the visual (images, colours, symbols, and typestyles) aspects of content off, disintegrating and reducing its status and impact. Graphic design is a field of expertise that integrates pictures and words, using words as visual expression. Graphic design can help students access content, demonstrate knowledge, and construct meaning using a broader set of tools. To help educators develop and enhance communication skills and deepen core content knowledge and trans-disciplinary understanding within their classroom, Design Instinct Learning has developed a research-based approach, integrating the natural sciences, engineering and graphic design.

Bill Mazza is a professor of Critical/Creative thinking for thousands of students and instructors at the European Institute of Design in Florence and Rome, Italy. I have also conducted creative thinking workshops at Harding University/Florence Campus, F.U.A./Florence University of the Arts, Richmond University/Florence Campus, and SACI (College of Arts and Design) and Harvard University. I have extensive experience in unconventional creative marketing, promotional advertising, art direction, design, lifestyle shoots, corporate and event planning for international companies such as Salvatore Ferragamo, Marchesi de
Frescobaldi Wines, and Schonhuber Franchi to name a few.
I have developed a Creative Thinking Academy called the THINK ACADEMY that is actived in 4 countries. The THINK ACADEMY host 8 of my teaching methodologies based on my Theory called iMAZZiNATiON.
That being said I have an original approach towards aesthetics, intuitive skill to unite images and ideas-independently of the will and thus begin an unconscious metaphoric process.
I’m sure that you’ve heard of Creative thinking, design thinking, forward thinking, critical thinking, lateral thinking, out of the box thinking, mindful thinking are mostly taught in the higher education arena. These types of thinking approaches share a common concept of applying a structured procedure in thinking. It’s ironic to think that in school they teach you how to write, do math, about history, art, etc. They even tell you what to think about, but they don’t teach you HOW to think. The HOW part doesn’t come automatic. That’s what I teach… The How part.
I am a creative director, art director, designer, creative methodologist, theoretician and teach creative thinking. I have developed 7 teaching methods based on my theory using cognitive reframing exercises … Some of which I have implemented at the European Institute of Design in Rome Italy and conducted workshops at other universities with phenomenal success and am now part of the Cambridge Creation Lab.
Everybody can think and everybody can think creatively even though they don’t believe they can. Today’s world is extremely challenging with everything going on and requires thinking and rethinking skills. Thinking is the basis of whether you are a valuable asset to a company or not. Companies are desperately looking for the new and original ideas … If a company does not have a new idea they will never have an edge and are forced to rely on other fiscal marketing maneuvers to beat the competition. Ironic to think, if they had an original idea there would be no need to compete because there is no competition. My workshops train you HOW to think creatively and to become a valuable asset for a business of any sector.

Typography is a central part of graphic design: creating and organising letters, words, sentences and simple and complicated texts in a given format. My professional work has many facets, and all of them, one way or another, are connected with words.
Consulting on Complex Typographic Design
Visual editorial planning and art direction for magazines, newspapers and books. These products tend to include various content and wording which require large scale thinking and meticulous typographic planning. Among the studio’s clients: Little Brown and Co., Globes financial newspaper, Maariv newspaper, Makor Rishon newspaper and Open TBE.
Font Design for Designers
Since 2000 I have been involved in the field of typeface (fonts) design and distribute my fonts independently.
Among my best known Hebrew fonts are: Doo, Rutz, Alchemist, Meoded, Sussita, Na, Ezer Block, Frankrühliah, and many more. Among the clients who use my fonts are leading advertisement and online design companies, daily newspapers and magazines, book publishers, TV channels and many independent designers. Some of my fonts have won excellence awards from the New York Type Directors Club, the Association Typographique Internationale (ATypI), as well as the Israeli Ministry of Education Award.
Corporate Fonts for Companies
Custom made, unique fonts that reflect the company’s values are an essential tool of its entire branding, and upon which all the company’s visual and advertising material is based.
Thus, I have created an automatic visual connection between the product, its commercial message and the company. A perfect match between the font and company’s values is a cornerstone
in the process of building a visual concept that will be created according to specific criteria for each company, such as the nature of its products, its potential customers, the purpose of advertising, etc. Among the studio’s exclusive font clients: mSystems, Migdal insurance company, YES, Globes financial newspaper.
Logo and Trademarks Design
Since 2000, I have been involved in the field of Branding in general, with special focus on Logo Design for small and large- sized companies. Among the logos I have designed throughout the years are logos for Bank Hapoalim, Open TBE, YES, Channel 10, Channel 2, Netex, Promotheous, Magnolia, Globes financial newspaper and many more. The studio works are published in books, catalogues and design magazines all over the world.
Poster Design and Printed Matter
This comprises poster design for cultural events, companies and mainly as part of my experimental activities. Some of the posters are kept in private collections of the largest and most eminent museums in the world such as MoMA, Museum für Gestaltung, Zürich and Israel Museum.
Teaching Typography in Israel and Abroad
In 2001 I began teaching typography and magazine design to 3rd-4th year students at Shenkar College of Engineering and Design, at the newly established Graphic Design Department, as part of the founding team.
Later on, I taught magazine design and experimental typography to 3rd-4th year students at the WIZO Academic Center in Haifa, and for a short term, logo design for 3rd-4th year students at the Bezalel Academy, Jerusalem.
Currently I am teaching at HIT - Holon institute of Technology, in the Visual Communications Design department: Typographic Foundations to 1st year students, Advanced Typographic Design to 2nd year students, Typography for Screen and Branding for 3rd year students and as a final project instructor to 4th year students. I am invited by design faculties abroad to lead short-term workshops and Master classes (Austria, Turkey, Korea, Italy an

I started a series of posts/posters "Creative Advantages" during isolation mood, which i refer to them as "shapes of personal thoughts". I write what happens with/to me that day and latter interpreted thru design. This whole quarantine is affecting us in a different way, but for an artist it is upmost to be clear in his thought, idea and execution so it could contribute to a community, surrounding and even the wider audience . The reactions from people were very positive, they started to recognise themselves and identified with them. my personal thoughts probably helped them to absolve the reality thru art, to accept mind objects as a mirror of them. to be honest, I did not expect that much. I was really surprised, and therefore I am glad for it. It made me also understand, that the social anxiety, was not because of the digital technology, but of people starting to understand the seriousness of reality, and looking at the power of the real nature...

Design Education Talks Ep. 6 - Pivoting to Online, with Meaghan Dee & Meena Khalili
It is our pleasure to share with you a podcast that was created and recorded by Peter Bella, designer, lecturer and host of the Design Dedux podcast, partner of Design Education Talks podcast.
Meaghan Dee is both a practicing graphic designer and a design educator. Currently, Meaghan serves as Chair for the Graphic Design program at Virginia Tech and as Co-Chair of the AIGA Design Educators Community (AIGA DEC) Executive Board. Meaghan received her Bachelors at University of Illinois, with a focus in Graphic Design, and a Masters of Fine Arts at Virginia Commonwealth University, with a focus in Visual Communication Design.
Prior to joining Virginia Tech, Meaghan worked professionally as a designer for the Architecture and Design firm, Marnell Companies, where I regularly worked with Architects, Interior Designers, and Industrial Designers on large-scale resorts. Meaghan specialises in design and systems thinking, typography, branding, user-experience design, cross-media design, packaging, and editorial design, but she loves learning new methodologies and finding ways to incorporate them into my classroom. I’ve experimented with many different materials and methods, such as taking my typographic studies into the realms of motion design, AR, and Processing. Regardless of the final output, I emphasize core values, process, and design thinking.
Her work has been awarded nationally and internationally by the American Advertising Federation (AAF), the American Institute of Graphic Artists (AIGA), Graphic Design U.S.A., Graphis, Hiii Typography, HOW Magazine, Indigo Design Awards, Print Magazine, the United Design Alliance, and the University & College Designers Association (UCDA).
Meena Khalili is a professor of design and interaction, who makes daily drawings of things. She is an artist who uses design as a strategy for creation, and a designer who brings artistic methods to her solutions.
A native of Washington, D.C. and Assistant Professor at the University of South Carolina School of Visual Art + Design, Meena holds a BFA in Illustration and an MFA in Visual Communication + Graphic Design from VCUarts. She currently serves on the AIGA Design Educators Community National Steering Committee.
Khalili is the recipient of the 2019 National Award for Outstanding Professional Achievement in Graphic Design by the Southeastern College Art Conference. Her work has shown at the Type Director’s Club of New York, Chicago Design Museum, and galleries throughout North America, Canada, China, Indonesia, Croatia, Australia and Moscow, with illustrations and book art in permanent collections at the VCU Libraries Special Collections and Archives, the Omni Hotel Louisville, and recently inducted artwork in the Library of Congress.
Her interdisciplinary research moves between traditional design and studio art practices and explores UX, storytelling, typography and language through design, illustration, moving image, and book art. She completed study at the Illustration Academy, and the LdM Institute in Florence, Italy, and finds inspiration in travel, culture, and her experience as a first generation Iranian-American.
In addition to her international exhibition schedule, she maintains an active speaking schedule with engagements and workshops held in Qatar, Italy, and throughout the U.S.

DESIGN EDUCATION: A FRAMEWORK FOR THE FUTURE.
A special off the series podcast from the
DESIGNSCAPES POLICY FORUM: DESIGN AND PUBLIC POLICY A TWO WAY STREET.
Co-hosted organised by the Econcult of the University of Valencia and the Valencia Capital Association of Disseny, with the support of Centro Cultural La Nau of University of Valencia, La Ciutat de les Artes i les Ciencies, and the municipal government from Valencia.
This forum aims to explore a two-way street approach for design policy, advocating for favourable public policy to foster urban design-enabled innovation on the one hand, and on the other hand, using good design to empower public policymaking.
By doing so, the forum creates a public arena to debate, discuss and explain why and how innovators in the public and private sectors in Europe can benefit from integrating design with the urban dimension and further to formulate proposals for vertical policy measures – to be adopted at European Union (EU), Member State (MS) and Regional levels – that can boost the design capacity and capability of European innovation actors and systems.
Based on the latest results of the #DESIGNSCAPES project and other parallel studies, the forum will deliver scientific and empirical evidence around the world to show how design enables urban innovation to address a series of global challenges, with a particular focus on environmental sustainability, digital economies, wellbeing and European values.

What is visual communication about, if not to subvert the familiar, shed new light on commonplace situations. We have the possibility to store entire libraries in a pocket-sized disk, but our own memory is constantly written and deleted by the overwhelming flow of images and sounds, rushing before us. This has resulted in us ignoring and dismissing a large amount of information a priori, without looking closely at the meaning it may possibly contain. It is our responsibility to remedy this consumption. One of the solutions, is to alter the amount, content and quality of what we are bombarded with everyday. We live in our cosily created reality bubble. It is time to burst it and see what happens...

Michael Johnson has pretty much seen it all. He’s had nine jobs and was fired from three of them, before deciding he’d become unemployable. He started Johnson Banks in London 28 years ago. He now has clients across the globe. His company is known for how they define, then design, brands that make a difference. They work with people who want to do big things: tackle hunger; fight for an open internet; address child poverty; raise billions for innovation and education; bring culture and enlightenment to the world; create products that question the norm; shift paradigms and change lives.
He has rebranded Mozilla entirely in the open and launched a world-beating campaign raising billions for the University of Cambridge. In 2019 alone, Johnson Banks rebranded one of the UK’s largest graduate employers, Teach First, the world’s favourite language app, Duolingo – whilst producing album artwork for Pink Floyd.
Johnson wrote a book on problem solving then lifted the lid on the branding process with his international bestseller, Branding: In Five and a Half Steps (Thames and Hudson). His third book, Now Try Something Weirder - How to keep having great ideas and survive in the creative business (Laurence King) came out in 2019 and gathers 233 thoughts, hints and tips on ideas, design, communication and branding into one small, affordable handbook.
Over his career Johnson has won most of the design world’s most desirable bits of wood and metal, including seven ‘yellow’ and one ‘black’ pencil from D&AD. In 2017 he was awarded the Gold D&AD’s Presidents Award, joining a list of previous recipients that includes Sir Terence Conran, Ridley Scott, Alan Parker and Wally Olins. Within education he has been D&AD President, an external examiner at Glasgow School of Art, Kingston University and LCC and lectures at countless others. He runs a branding workshop for D&AD that has lasted a decade, once helped revalidate the RCA’s communications course and is now an Honorary Professor at Glasgow School of Art.
In his spare moments he wields old-fashioned yet wonderful cameras, and wonders why, after 48 years of trying, he isn’t a better guitar player.
