It's that time of year again, in which we love to invite our good friend, author, and speaker, Stephen Mansfield, to share with us the original story of Thanksgiving. We hope that this retelling can be a generational gift to your family, one that is passed down and retold through the years. From us here at Renovating Masculinity, have a happy Thanksgiving.

Talking about sex with guys is easy! We just stick to classic one-liners we learned at the barbershop or hanging out under the street light as teenagers. It was all oversimplified, filled with made-up escapades and things that other guys lie about! Yep, it was funny and we all walked away laughing, but did we really learn anything of value? I didn’t. Take those same guys and ask for some real advice on say, sex toys, ed, premature ejaculation or not being able “finish the job” for your wife and see if things continue to flow so smoothly.
So it is at that point that we pick up the discussion in this week's episode.

This week, JT and Anthony sit down with international leader and author, Steve Berger. As a public figure and confidant to many of our nation's leaders, Steve is often maligned, but he is still never afraid to confidently share his beliefs. With him, we discuss the foundations of courage, sacrifice, and why it's important as men to be more than just males.

There is a truth about chivalry and honor that you will not hear in the mainstream. The agenda of those in control of information seems to be content with the process of emasculation.
Today, the guys discuss how defining chivalry as a more modern term could help men and women understand the intent of those who practice this behavior on a daily basis without looking for something in return.
We can live honorable lives, and we feel that's exactly what the majority espouse to do. The real question is, what areas are you not living honorably and how can you change that?

Masculinity in 2022 is like a huge science project. Or is it more like a mad scientist's lab? There's so much that has been in this grand experiment that is no more. And much of it rightly needed to die.
But at the crux of masculinity has always been the idea of using what ever is inert in a man being used for the sake of others. Today, we look at the idea of chivalry and critically ask: has it outlived its usefulness?

What is it about the extremes of masculinity that culture seems to focus on? Men are either sex crazed, misogynistic, lazy buffoons or intelligent, handsome, Superman-like heroes.
In reality, it's the men who understand and accept personal responsibility that make the biggest impact in their own lives, and the lives of those in their sphere. It's those who overcome the common who become great!

With Tom Brady in the news for something other than winning a super bowl, the guys take this opportunity to ask important questions about themselves and the shared difficulties we face in our professional and personal lives.
The difference between our situations and Brady's is we don't have camera crews asking us personal questions in a public setting. However, that doesn't change the fact we all face the same difficult decisions when it comes to prioritizing work and family.
As always, we hold nothing back in this conversation.

There are sometimes dozens of interactions with people we care about in a single day, most of which are low level, superficial and phony. Even when we muster up the kindness to speak, and God forbid, actually ask “How are you?” we don’t really want to know. Do we?
You can change a life by simply creating space for real connections. That life might be your own.
This is how you create that space.

Andrew Tate has become a social media phenomenon, tapping into a large consensus of what masculinity has become. But is he right, or just a great marketer? Honestly, we love that he has the guts to say what he believes, but would we let him date our daughter? That's another story.
Like every other man, there are wounds and traumas that create a deformed masculinity that, left unhealed, will cause us to have opinions that live in the extremes. Today, we hit this subject head on and almost stayed out of trouble doing so. The real question is, will we be cancelled?

One of the 5 key elements that make up the maxim of character is perseverance. Perseverance is what builds mental fortitude, and the overprotection of our society has greatly limited this opportunity for men, resulting in soft males. Today, JT opens up about his season of stuck and the battle of perseverance he is facing through the grief and loss of his career and life changes. You don't want to miss this.

You're under the influence more than you realize: the influence of others. Influence, be it positive or negative, is happening to us and by us whether we realize it or not. But amidst the influence we may have, most every man asks the question, "Do I have what it takes to make a difference?" This week, JT and Anthony talk about how influence doesn't come by chasing it, but by building it.

Sometimes we undress sex down to sophomoric terms: position, duration, frequency, climax, ejaculation...Overlooking the deeper subjects. Man that's lazy! Also, is the whole idea of “happy wife, happy life” legitimate? We did accomplish work in this episode. I think we may have figured out a way for married men to sleep with a different woman! We added a few words to our lexicon like “marrying kind” and “that thang." This episode has all the ingredients to go out of bounds. Listen in and tell us, did it?

The 4th of July can conjure up admiration and respect for some, and for others distain and angst. It’s ok to acknowledge both. Seek reconciliation on a day that for some is of cultural importance, and for others, simply a reason to laugh and share a bourbon with your Band of Brothers. Thus, today we take a light hearted view of the holiday approaching and reveal a few nuggets about its historical roots that you might not know. Happy 4th of July!

Men get mixed signals. Do we specialize? Do we get a general education and work on specific certifications? Should we just give up and admit “I’m just not handy” and be satisfied?
To a hammer, everything is a nail; to a mathematician, everything is an equation to be solved; but they both call a plumber when the water pressure tanks. Join us as we discuss the fallacy that is “A Jack of all trades," because this question is important in life, marriage, professional, emotional matters, and even our sex lives.

There are families in Uvalde, TX that have an empty bed in their homes tonight, never to be filled with bed time stories, tickle fights, or prayers. Is there a right way to respond in situations that are this horrific and evil?
We have definitely seen the wrong way to respond over the past several days that include our country's highest officials. The real question is: is there a solution that goes beyond a passing another law? The answer is not simple. But we do believe that, in part, we have failed our boys. We, as a society, have caused so much mental fragility, social isolation and confusion, it's no wonder anxiety, depression and a loss of hope runs rampant amongst our young. We believe that until the collective community of men take responsibility to raise righteous, capable and noble young men, we will continue to watch our boys burn the village down, just to feel its warmth.

Leadership is a fluid and elusive skill set, always evolving and adapting in response to those you lead. Your personal leadership style (if you are wise) is always shifting and growing as you enter different seasons of life.
Rage, sarcasm and abdication are 3 of many LAZY @#$% leadership styles that we dig into here: styles that will make those you lead frustrated with a lack of personal progress and confused about the larger goal of the organization. But most importantly, your behavior can create resentful teams and leave the entire organization ripe for abuse, intentional waste and a brooding desire to sabotage you. And that's if you have great employees! If you lead, #leadwithpassion.

I, Anthony, am emotionally “raw” and minutes out of my first therapy session on this week’s episode. Luckily, my friend, Keith Anderson, met me in the hallway and volunteered to join me on for this debrief of my inaugural chat with a clinical phycologist.
Therapy is a thing that can make grown men shiver. We hope to change that. It’s an option that it seems every man contemplates. It leaves us wondering whether we are mentally ill. All of us have heard the voice that tells us, “Come and see what it’s like,” and many of us fail to ask ourselves, "Then what?" This week, we are joined by crisis counselor, Dr. Ray Rodriguez, a former Marine who specializes in counseling military personnel, to break down why the allure of suicide is a lie.

The movie will be titled: From Paddington to Patton
We all meet moments in our lives that ask us to reinvent and adapt. Our response to those moments can change a life, a people, a country and literally the world’s history. President Zelensky was better known as the voice of Paddington the Bear (Ukrainian Dub) than the voice of Ukraine’s incarnation of Patton before he leapt onto the world stage. He simply set his heart and the heart of his people aflame with the hope of liberty!
We learn things about him that only a historian the caliber of Stephen Mansfield would know. Listen and learn.

This week, we continue our discussion and dissection of the fatherless effect. The effects of a fatherless mindset are not just for those who grew up without a father in the home. In fact, all of us have symptoms whether we realize it or not.
We would dare say that most of our issues stem from our condition of being spiritually orphaned. As men, we need the weight of a father’s affirmation, acceptance, and love to keep us grounded when life attempts to ravage our souls.
Listen in as we breakdown how to assess and recognize the characteristics of a fatherless identity and how to stop it at its source and rather than just trying to manage the damage it brings.

This week, we're throwing it back to a vitally important episode. "Why do men cheat?" Cheating may be one of, or possibly THE #1 issue destroying marriages and monogamous relationships.
The three host of Renovating Masculinity reveal why we have cheated in the past, while funny guy Addison Tweedy keeps us from falling down the rabbit hole and getting too heavy. We looked at our personal motives and the reasons why men are cheating on women they "say" they love, on women they "say" are important, and in reality, why men are choosing to destroy the hard work they put into their relationships.
Could there be a simple answer, or as many reasons as there are cheaters? Women asked us and we are telling ALL! This discussion uncovered more questions like, are we honestly creating what we like least in women, "she doesn't trust me"?
Join in the conversation on why we think men cheat.

The more you've been hurt, the more difficult building healthy, viable friendships becomes. Wounds of the past hinder us from giving others the chance to know anything remotely personal about the depth of pain we've encountered and its effects within our minds and actions. We then settle for shallow acquaintances rather than meaningful friendships. Why? The fear of being known isn't worth the risk of rejection. In this episode, we discuss the difficult road that Anthony has had to navigate to overcome wounds inflicted by so-called-friends throughout his past, so he could take the risk of being known by other men.

All of us have the opportunity to learn from life's tough lessons. Our guest today, former NFL player Chris Sanders, shares some hard lessons he learned through failure.
Although his life seemed put together on the field, tumultuous times off the field led to an identity crisis that sent him on a difficult journey of deconstructing and rebuilding his life. Chris' story goes well beyond him as a world-class athlete. The lessons he learned will inspire, strengthen and encourage you that whatever your past or background may be, you're just one decision away from beginning the journey to greatness.

As men, we have honestly had our fill of F. I.O. (figure it out) when we express our “feelings.” We want to be acknowledged and affirmed in our confusion and insecurities by the women we love and the men we call friends. Men: we have to create our own space that allows for us to speak to each other on this topics. Who do you call when you are at your lowest?

You don’t have tell me your favorite football team; you wear it on your shirt. You don’t have to tell me what you believe; you wear it in your everyday life. The problem is some of these beliefs are built on lies, which limits our potential. Today, we talk with Aaron Davis, author of “Limitless,” about overcoming the thoughts and lies that we believe, and how they actually keep us limited.

Ugh! Those dreaded 'gotcha' moments! Every relationship, whether significant or casual, has its share of moments when we get caught with our hands in the proverbial cookie jar. Your response in that moment can be the "make it or break it" reaction of a lifetime. But even more crucial are those moments when we get caught doing something…. GOOD! Yeah! GOOD. After listening to today's episode, "catching people doing something good" may be a habit that you find more attractive, fulfilling, and fruitful. Listen in as Anthony is caught completely off guard by an unexpected live on air “living eulogy.” Very powerful episode that every man needs to hear.

Men have a talent for creating mental distractions and careless obstacles to ruin every great thing that we could accomplish. These moments are most commonly accompanied by a man's proclivity towards passivity, excuses, and poor time management. Every man could use a coach and a great personal challenge in his life. So Coach JT gets into it all a bit. Let's get to work!

This week, we continue our look at the mindset of NBA legend Kobe Bryant and examine his approach to work ethic and leadership. There is so much wisdom to glean from his experiences throughout his career, and we focus on how he addressed his own weaknesses and applied himself very intentionally to transform those weaknesses into strengths.

In light of recent events this month, we want to continue to press into the issue of inequality and racial tensions that our country is wrestling with, and we decided to revisit one of our discussions from last year to frame our thought process. These issues run deep into the fabric of our society and they are entwined with our everyday lives and relationships, whether we acknowledge them or not. We must be vigilant in keeping our minds and our eyes open to these issues, and continually work on the posture of our hearts in walking them out relationally and culturally.

We spent three weeks with Chad Karger, a professional counselor to many touring musicians and their families. To say that Chad filled our cup with insight and practical wisdom is like calling the Atlantic Ocean a puddle! It can be dangerous to trust three “getter done” types like the host of Renovating Masculinity with that kind of wisdom. So we took some of those suggestions home and for a spin in our personal lives, and let's just say, you are “gonna wanna” hear this!

We continue to glean from our resident counselor, Chad Karger, as he expounds on how trauma plays out in our lives and how it only takes incremental changes to start making movement and improvement. There is such a power in making 1% changes, and Chad encourages us how to take those steps and what we can do for ourselves as well as for our family and friends closest to us.

“Men neglect themselves.”
That’s what Chad Karger, counselor to high-level music industry entertainers, had to say about what field of responsibility he sees men neglecting the most. So why is this such an issue for men? Our discussion brought up many reasons for the struggle of “self-care.” Some of them were very personal as Anthony, Chris and JT continue to get vulnerable with Chad. Listen in as we frame these powerful lessons and learn how to struggle well!

Most of us can take action and push through struggles if it helps us build physical strength or if it brings us a profit. But what about working and struggling with our emotional health and building emotional strength? Most of us cringe and pull away from anything relating to counseling, therapy, or just having to “talk about our feelings.” Many of us can relate that our culture tells us that counseling or therapy is a sign of weakness or brokenness; but if we are honest with ourselves we can all admit to having thoughts and feelings within ourselves that are difficult to unpack and even harder to verbalize.
This week, Chris brings his counselor, Chad Karger, to the table to give us a fresh perspective of counseling that can be intentional and immediately applicable to our lives and relationships. It doesn’t take years of going to counseling to make progress and to glean wisdom from this area, and there is tremendous opportunity for growth if we will just take a minute and check ourselves. Chad gives practical insight into how he approaches counseling other men as he offers us a ton of really helpful advice for us to apply right away to our lives, and shows us what it means to actually take-off our superhero cape and ask for help.

How do the most prolific athletes sustain and continue their success? Coach Lowry continues to share stories from his NFL career of some of the most successful players he’s coached and the reasons why some players are able to sustain much longer careers than others. Coach uses the acronym “A.S.K.” and gives us insight into how humility, mental outlook, and “buying-in to the program” can really transform our potential and the ability to expand in our skillsets, in every aspect of life.
Don’t be dependent on your talents, and don’t rely solely on your skill level and strengths; take an inventory of your ego. Then seek out coaching/instruction and press yourself to grow and continue to develop, no matter how “skilled” you think you are.

Did you write off 2020 and slip the pessimistic lenses on your shades? #notalonebro After looking back at 2020, The Crew of RM is taking a swing and reaching for more in 2021! JT commits to being intentionally aware of himself, good or bad. It boils down to personal humility, and not allowing pride and arrogance to creep into even the most wholesome and honorable efforts. Chris admits he's dragging his feet and doesn't want to schedule a doctor visit-- out of "busy-ness," but also out of some underlying fear. Anthony “opens up” and recounts a time his wife was undressing and waiting on another man to walk in, while he sat there silently.

Is this the new year, or is it just the 13th month of LAST year?! The guys are back and jumping right into discussion, giving a recap of their lives the past few months: what it was like having The Vid, what our takeaways are from 2020, and where to get cool clothes online (#rootsofFight). Anthony found a lost passion of board games, JT still hasn’t gone turkey hunting, and Chris is walking around his house in a man-kini…but we’re still a band of brothers, figuring out how to be purposeful and how to tackle our problems, tend to our fields, and chase after honesty and intentional vulnerability. We all need to take some inventory of 2020: being honest about our greatest challenges and our heaviest fears, but also acknowledging the positive and productive things that came out of such a crazy and challenging year.

So it is at that point that we pick up the discussion in this week's podcast.

We added a few words to our lexicon like “marrying kind” and “that thang" This episode has all the ingredients to go out of bounds. Listen in and tell us, did it?

Look. Sex is really good! And honestly, most things that we find pleasure in, we can easily push to extremes and turn them into something that harms us, including sex. Sex is natural, wholesome and incredibly enjoyable! It is normal and healthy to desire it, think of it and look forward to it, but not at the expense of all other pursuits. If we choose JUST SEX over relationship, commitment, honesty, integrity, we wondered aloud in this episode... “is this what gets us in trouble?”
We also touch on the “ancient molecules” vasopressin and oxytocin and the roles that these peptides play in sex, porn, multiple partners, hook ups and several other expressions of sex in the current culture. And finally, we look at the “outdated” idea that sex is best in the confines of marriage and the pros and cons of premarital sex.
Are sex and intimacy the same? Listen in as we disagree!

This week we discuss another question that our female listeners asked: "Why do men cheat?" Cheating may be one of, or possibly THE #1 issue destroying marriages and monogamous relationships.
Join in the conversation of why we think men cheat.

Our female listeners (yes, we have them) are brutally honest! They want to know "Why are men intimidated by powerful women, female leaders, and women that out-earn them?"
Is this true? Do women contribute to it or play any part in it? Or is it ultimately just the reaction of an insecure man?
Women want to know!

We made this crazy enquiry of women on Facebook:
"Ladies: I need 25+ hard hitting questions you have about men or Masculinity that you want an honest answer to."
Oh boy! We got over 60 responses and climbing.
You know the questions we're always asking when its just us guys. "What is she thinking?" "What is wrong with her?" And the classic "Why is she tripping?" As it turns out, women are doing the exact same thing.
So we decided to bravely answer some of these questions that women are asking. The first one: "Do you put your mom before your wife?"
So take your tool belt off, pull up a chair, take a break and listen up.

Leadership is a massive term that can can be defined and discussed in a plethora of ways. We continue this next miniseries by defining leadership as influence, and share examples of how this definition rings true in our lives. Titles and authority can be mishandled, and do not embody the entirety of true healthy leadership. No matter your age, title, job description, or friend groups, we all wield influence and we all are influenced BY others. As noble men, we must take inventory of how we are using and possibly abusing the influence we carry.

What are your motives? In your job, in your relationships, in your family— what things are driving you to succeed and pursue greatness, and are there any ways you can (or should) challenge those motives? JT: When you’re upgrading a house, there’s a key difference between remodeling and renovating. A remodel is to change the function of a space, whereas a renovation is to restore back to good condition; to make new; to invigorate or to revive. For men in our culture, we have come a long way from what we were originally designed & built for.
It's time for a Renovation.
This is Renovating Masculinity. We'll bring three different perspectives from three different personalities, to raise your awareness, call you to action and increase your accountability. And we're going to give you all the tools to Rethink, Remove and Replace.
