Your purpose isn't something you find. It's what's left when your ego finally gets out of the way.
In our next episode of JUNG ON PURPOSE, Why The Ego Blocks Your Purpose, we unpack what purpose actually is, and why so many people confuse it with career success or a life plan. Drawing on the Upanishads' concept of dharma, Jungian individuation, and the hero's journey, they explain the four pillars of a whole life (relationships, success, wellness, and dharma), why the "call" to purpose usually shows up as a midlife wall around 30, and why the ego resists that call at every turn. Discover why discomfort and resistance are often a sign you're on the right path, why mentors and coaches matter more than any tactic or strategy, and how true purpose requires the ego's version of you to symbolically die so a deeper, soul-led version can take over.
In this episode, we will unpack:

You keep hearing that you have to "let go of the ego," but do you actually know what your ego is?
In this episode, we take on one of the most misunderstood words in personal growth: ego. Rather than picking one definition, we walk through four completely different lenses (neuroscience, Freud, Jung, and non-dual Eastern philosophy) and unpack how each one changes what "working on yourself" actually means.
We start with why neuroscience calls the ego an "emergent property," something that can be observed but never fully explained. Then we get into the real Freudian model: the ego as the exhausted middleman between the id's pleasure-seeking and the superego's internalized parent, and why the ego, in Freud's view, actually loves keeping you confused. From there we unpack Jung's very different take: the ego as the sun rising and setting, the persona we wear, the shadow we disown, and why real growth in midlife isn't about destroying the ego but shifting its center of gravity toward the larger Self. We close by unpacking the non-dual perspective: the idea that the ego isn't something to fix at all, but a misperception to see through, so you can create from wholeness instead of lack.
Whether you're a coach, a client, or just someone tired of hearing "ego" thrown around without context, we give you the actual map, so the next time someone says "check your ego," you'll know exactly which model they're (probably not) talking about.

What if the person you fell in love with was never who you thought they were? In this episode of Jung on Purpose, we explore romantic love through the lens of Jungian psychology and non-dual philosophy, revealing that the overwhelming pull of attraction is actually your own soul image projected onto another person. We trace how the templates we absorbed from our parents quietly shape who we choose, why the honeymoon glow fades, and what surfaces in a long relationship once the projection falls away. Rather than treating relationship struggles as evidence that something needs fixing, we offer a more liberating view: your partner is a mirror, your patterns are an invitation to know yourself, and relationships may be the most powerful path to growth there is.

In this episode of Jung on Purpose, Debra and Dr. Rob explore a profound insight from Jungian psychology and Eastern non-dual philosophy: the reason we're still suffering may be that we're looking for happiness in the wrong place. They discuss how online spaces magnify both connection and suffering, why social media can intensify the ego and persona, and how depth coaching and inner work are essential if we want technology to serve human awakening instead of division. Rather than rejecting technology, they invite us to consciously engage with it as a mirror of the mind and a tool for transformation.

In this episode ofJung On Purpose, we explore the profound difference between self-improvement and individuation—and why endlessly “working on yourself” often leads to exhaustion rather than fulfillment.
Drawing from Jungian depth psychology and Eastern philosophy, we challenge the modern self-help model that treats the ego as something to fix or perfect. Instead, we introduce individuation as a living process of becoming whole, integrating the conscious and unconscious, and aligning with a deeper intelligence within the psyche.
We reframe personal growth as a meaningful, embodied journey—not toward a better persona, but toward a richer, more authentic experience of life itself.

In this episode, Debra and Rob discuss the first stage of the Hero’s Journey, Departure, exploring its powerful connections to Jung’s concept of individuation. Together, they break down what it truly means to heed the “call to adventure,” grapple with the natural impulse to refuse that call, and why venturing into the unknown is such a pivotal moment for personal growth.
Drawing from Joseph Campbell’s celebrated framework, our hosts discuss the fears, resistance, and life changes that often spark the journey toward transformation—whether it’s a breakup, a new opportunity, an illness, or the desire for a more meaningful life. Debra and Rob illustrate how these external events become invitations to look inward, confront our unconscious, and begin the path toward authentic self-discovery.
You’ll hear thoughtful insights on why true change requires moving beyond comfort zones and external markers of success, and how the support of mentors and guides—especially those skilled in inner work—can help us cross that critical threshold. Whether you’re navigating a challenging transition or searching for deeper purpose, this episode offers both practical guidance and soulful inspiration for embarking on your own hero’s journey. In this conversation, Debra and Dr. Rob dive deep into the nature of consciousness from both Eastern and Western perspectives, exploring the fascinating concept of “self-luminous consciousness.”
They break down how past experiences condition our minds to prioritize survival and fear, often shaping our perceptions of reality in limiting ways.

You’ll hear powerful metaphors and practical examples—including the intriguing analogy of the mind as a customizable app—that help demystify abstract concepts and show how they can be applied to your everyday life, especially when it comes to wealth, self-perception, and personal growth.

What if everything you knew about reality was an illusion?
Continuing our series on Consciousness and Non-Dual Philosophy, In this episode, “Why is there suffering?”, we answer some common questions asked on this topic:
Here’s a quick recap of what we covered:
The Three Principles of Non-Dual Philosophy
We explore why the intelligence that created the world would allow bad things to happen. Why is there war and evil? How am I responsible for the events that happen to me in my life?
Dr. Rob breaks it down for us that these tough questions usually come from the ego’s limited perspective. Instead of blaming ourselves, we are invited to see that we are part of the whole, much like branches on a tree. Yes, tragedy and injustice exist in the play of Maya (illusion), but our awareness of them is what connects us, not makes us to blame.

This is the last of our current series on the parent-child dynamics that shape our adult life. In this last installment we examine the Mother-Son relationship.
For men, the mother is his first experience of the Anima, their unconscious feminine principle in their psyche. Depending on their relationship with the mother, the man either cultivates their emotional intelligence or it stagnates which creates difficulty in connecting to others on a deeper level.
Eros is another term that Jung used to describe the feminine principle. If a man isn’t in touch with this principle, they are not consciously connecting to the soul within. This lack of connection leads to unfulfilling relationships, pursuing careers without meaning and establishing a sense of their own soulful nature.
Questions:
How would you describe your relationship with your mother growing up?
How do you project the assumptions about that relationship onto the women in your life, both romantically and otherwise?
How would you describe your relationship with your inner life, your soulful self?
In Jungian Depth Coaching we first begin with Shadow Work on the mother relationship and then the man can be free to pursue a deeper inner connection to his Anima. This frees us emotional availability, creativity and the ability to connect with others in a meaningful way.
In this week’s Soul Sessions by CreativeMind, Emotional Intelligence in Men and the Anima. Check out this episode to learn more, including:

In our latest episode, “Envy and Authority: Your Shadow at Work,” we discuss the intricate dynamics of how our hidden self—our Shadow—plays out in the workplace. If you’ve ever found yourself resenting a colleague, feeling unappreciated by your boss, or struggling with envy and competition, this episode is a must-listen. Here are some key insights we discussed:
🔍 Unpacking Projections:
We explore how individuals project familial dynamics onto workplace authority figures. Your boss might unconsciously represent a parental figure, influencing your interactions and behavior in unexpected ways. If you had a difficult boss or envied a co-worker, understanding projections can help you gain insight and freedom.
🌱 Persona vs. Shadow:
Understand the critical Jungian concepts of Persona and Shadow. Your Persona is the face you present to the world, particularly in professional settings, while your Shadow houses the parts of yourself you tend to hide. The tension between these can lead to significant professional challenges.
🌟 Personal Development and Self-awareness:
Debra shares her personal journey towards self-improvement and how it enhanced her work relationships. Recognizing and mitigating unconscious patterns through personal development can lead to a more fulfilling professional life.
🌿 The Role of Family Dynamics:
Learn how critical parental figures shape your responses to authority and feedback in the workplace. Addressing these projections can help improve your interactions with superiors.
🏆 Envy and Competitiveness:
Competition and envy are natural but can be detrimental if left unchecked. By understanding these feelings and engaging in shadow work, you can transform negative emotions into empowering actions.
🔑 Effective Communication:
Effective leadership and professional relationships hinge on clear communication. We discuss the importance of understanding your reactions and motivations before engaging with colleagues, to avoid projection and enhance clarity.
Explore how you can make your work relationships more productive and enjoyable by understanding a little more about yourself and Jungian Psychology.

We all have the one family member that seems to be challenging us. Whether it is a parent who we still hold resentment from childhood or a sibling who always brings out the worst in us, we feel that the situation will never change.
The biggest mistake people make when trying to heal family conflicts is projection. They believe if the other person would change, everything would be better. If they were nicer, more understanding, more loving or even respectful then life would be easier.
The problem with this projection is that it robs us of our power. We feel powerless unless they change.
That is the beauty of shadow work. In shadow work, you get to recognize your own projections in the dynamic because as the saying goes, “It takes two to tango.”
A great question to ask yourself in a difficult relationship is what I am bringing to this dynamic? What triggers me about that person that I deny about myself.

Debra and Dr. Rob discuss the benefits of incorporating Jungian coaching principles as a relationship coach. Understanding attachment styles, the unconscious mind, and the deeper dynamics of relationships can help coaches guide their clients more effectively, whether they are single, going through a divorce or seeking to improve their current relationships.
The key is to focus on the client's relationship with themselves, as this is often reflected in their external relationships. This depth-oriented approach goes beyond basic "positive thinking" strategies to address the root causes of relationship challenges. Self-understanding and the Jungian concepts of the shadow and the anima/animus in relationships are important for deeper growth.
The persona we present to the world can lead us to attract the opposite, or "shadow" parts of ourselves that we've repressed. By integrating the shadow, we can then work on connecting with others at a deeper, soulful level through the anima/animus - the universal, divine force that drives us to merge with another person. This process of self-discovery and integration is key to forming truly meaningful relationships.
We discuss the importance of doing inner work and integrating one's own shadow before seeking a soulmate connection. When we project our ideals onto others, we give away our power and set ourselves up for disappointment. By reclaiming our projections through shadow work, we can meet others from a place of wholeness and authenticity, leading to more fulfilling and lasting relationships
The journey of self-discovery is challenging but essential for finding a true soul-to-soul connection. It's important to take personal responsibility in relationships, rather than blaming external factors or seeking an "ideal" partner. Growth and strengthening bonds can happen even through difficult times, as long as individuals are willing to do the inner work and not put all their needs on their partner
The key is to empower oneself, accept responsibility, and approach relationships with an open and positive mindset, rather than fear of getting hurt again. We share the importance of healthy, conscious relationships and how to guide others through the process of personal growth and shadow work.
By doing this inner work, individuals have found meaningful relationships and strengthened their existing partnerships. The focus is on normalizing human patterns and empowering people to transcend their conditioned behaviors, rather than dwelling on trauma or inner child healing. This process leads to lasting change, rather than just addressing symptoms.

This extra-long episode is split into two parts. This is Part One where we discuss how love is a projection of our mind and the experience of another person can only be from within our mind. Learn how our mind filters your perception of the person you are dating and distorts who they are - either putting them on a pedestal or being triggered by them in a negative way.
We also discuss how we learn to look externally for love since the day we were born, relying upon our mother for love and comfort. We continue that search for love and comfort in others and the way we approach relationships is from that early mother-child bonding time.

If you are feeling anxious about things being out of control in your life, this episode explains the three qualities of being according to The Bhagavad Gita, specifically the Gunas - Sattva, Rajas and Tamas.
Tamas is inertia and depressed, static, non-active state. Rajas is the hurried state chasing things, spinning and reacting to life circumstances. Sattva is the highest state which is love and happiness and perceiving the world with the right understanding.
Explore these concepts with us as we explain how to apply this in your every day life to cultivate that "enlightened mind" so you can make better choices, feel more at peace and create your life in a conscious way.

Do you find that some emotions are easier to deal with than others? In the personal development space there are two ways to deal with emotions. First, they may tell you to reframe the story or use your ‘emotional intelligence’ to deal with them. Or, you may hear that you should get rid of your negative emotions through healing or clearing them away.
Recently, Debra heard an expert talk about emotions and giving the advice to not feel them, just ignore them and feel good. Just stop feeling bad! This type of glib advice can be very harmful long-term for your personal development. After all, life is about feeling a range of emotions.
In this episode we talk about:
Episode Exercise: Debra talks you through 'digesting' emotions by neutrally examining and experiencing them.

Our purpose is tied to an archetypal pattern and if we do not choose to activate it, it remains dormant in the psyche and is unrealized potential. Understand how dreams help us become aware of our true selves so we can express that potential.

Are we living in a computer-driven simulation? That seems like an impossible hypothesis to prove. But let's just look at how impossible that really is. For some machine to be able to conjure up our whole reality, it needs to be amazingly powerful, able to keep track of an incalculable number of variables. Consider the course of just one human lifetime, with all of the events it entails, all the materials, ideas and people that one interacts with throughout an average lifespan. Then multiply that by about a hundred billion souls that have graced this planet with their presence so far. The interactions between all these people, as well as the interactions between all the animals, plants, bacterium, planetary bodies, really all the elements we know and don't know to be a part of this world, is what constitutes the reality you encounter today.
If you think this proposal sounds plausible, you would not be alone. Elon Musk and many others are fairly convinced we are just sophisticated self-aware computer programs or maybe even video games.
Journalist PAUL RATNER wrote this about Reality vs. Simulation for BigThink. Debra and Rob take the subject further, exploring the concept from ancient and global spiritual and philosophical perspectives, including:
Grab a cup of tea, open your mind and join us for a deep conversation on the nature of reality.
Episode Exercise: Pure Awareness. Debra takes you through a simple exercise you can do to access the true nature of who you are, the unchanging spirit.

Are you or someone you know asking, “Am I too old for love? Marriage? A meaningful relationship? My forever partner?” It may surprise you to know that many women, regardless of their actual chronological age, are asking themselves these questions. They are at a ‘certain age’ (in their own minds and belief systems) where they start measuring themselves against societal norms, family expectations, or peer pressure — whether they be Thirty-three or Seventy-three! Many believe that they are falling behind all of their friends who have found their soulmates or who have gotten married and had children. Debra and Rob break down the reality of the matter and explore the age factor in finding true love.
Episode Exercise: Embrace your age whatever it is and look at your triggers around age and beauty to help you reveal your shadow that is influencing your dating life.

The internet has given us so many gifts and ways to connect but it also comes with a dark side. We are more connected than ever but sometimes we feel bad when we spend too much time on Facebook, Instagram or Twitter. The false persona that we present online can be confused with our real self and we can get caught up in identifying with our ego instead of our true spiritual self.
In this episode we discuss the three main issues people have online that keep them from evolving:
Episode Exercise: What to do when you are triggered by someone online.

Do you feel guilty saying “no” or do you allow others to make decisions for you and feel resentment? Many people think that lack of boundaries is an indicator of low self-esteem, but as social creatures, everyone has problems with boundaries. If you do not have the ability to set healthy boundaries in relationships you may just avoid relationships all together or just wait for someone to behave according to your rules without having to express yourself.
We all act in relationships based on our past experience by default and that is how we learned to tolerate certain behaviors through example of the adults around us when we were young. This fixed mindset will only lead to the same type of relationship patterns. By setting and expressing boundaries, you get to use your Creative Mind to create your own path and example in how you want to be treated and how you treat yourself.
In this episode, Debra and Rob will lead you through an honest talk on boundaries in relationships and how to set boundaries to make you feel empowered.
Episode Exercise: Debra will give you an exercise to begin to address where boundaries are not being expressed and how to start setting them so you can be more empowered in relationships, have more self-respect and surround yourself with people who honor you.
In our Love+Purpose Facebook Group, Debra and Rob offer free micro-trainings, including one on how to master the art of love by learning how to access the Creative Mind. The reason you do not have the love or life you want isn’t because of any external circumstances or that something is wrong with you. You don’t need to date more or change your profile as much as look within yourself to see the REAL YOU. If you are someone who wants more in life and wants to make a difference in the world, you will be a part of a community of educated women who are on the same journey to love and purpose. Have you wondered if you could get hypnotized to change your life? You see it in movies as some blank state where the person is powerless to control of the hypnotist or something than can erase memories. In this episode we explore the state of hypnosis and how it can change your life.
Debra Berndt Maldonado is a highly-trained clinical hypnotherapist and has personally helped thousands of people with her hypnotic tools. Her book, LET LOVE IN: Open Your Heart & Mind to Attract Your Ideal Partner (Wiley 2010) is all about how to use hypnosis to attract love.
Episode Exercise: Self-hypnosis. Debra leads you through a quick self-hypnosis exercise you can do every day to shift your mind and get into a relaxed state instantly. She explains how to write affirmations that work in your hypnotic state for faster results.
One of the main tools that we teach our students in our Creative Mind Coach training program is how to effectively use visualization to help a client make changes in their life. Debra has developed hundreds of visualizations and her visualization videos on YouTube have received millions of views. There is extensive research on visualization and its effectiveness. While athletes use it to prepare for a sport, any person can use it to master their life. Visualization enables a person to use their Creative Mind to shift their perspective, work with emotions, uncover what is unconscious and focus their mind on what they truly want in life so they can achieve their desires.

In this episode of Creative Mind Living, feminine psychology and women's empowerment experts Debra and Rob explain the difference between true intuition and a 'gut instinct' and how you can make the most of your own woman's intuition. Debra also shares a bit of 'Let It Be' insight from Sir Paul McCartney.
Did you know...
The 'collective unconscious' is a concept originally defined by psychoanalyst Carl Jung. It is sometimes called the objective psyche. It refers to the idea that a segment of the deepest unconscious mind is genetically inherited and is not shaped by personal experience.

In this episode of Creative Mind Living, Debra and Rob warn against boxing yourself in or limiting yourself (or others!) with personality tests and assessments. Debra also gives in to her fangirl side and admits her addiction to Game of Thrones and her inner turmoil over the final season.
Did you know...
Many people associate the popular Myers–Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) 'personality test' with the work of Carl Jung, the Swiss psychiatrist and psychoanalyst who founded analytical psychology. But it was actually created by mom+daughter team Katharine Briggs and Isabel Briggs-Myers — neither of whom were trained or educated in psychology or psychiatry. The test has become a popular way to classify and label people but is no more accurate or authoritative than an Astrology horoscope!
“Every individual is an exception to the rule... this kind of classification is nothing but a childish parlour game.”Carl Jung. Psychological Types. Routledge, 1921.
