Nicole chats to Janet, the creator of the Happy Strap. The Happy Strap was designed as an aid for infants and children with hypotonia (low muscle tone) to assist the control of ligament laxity and joint flexibility in the hips. A degree of stability is given to the hips by the Happy Strap and this greatly assists in stabilising little bodies and helping them through their developmental milestones of sitting, crawling and walking. Worn while sleeping it counteracts any tendency of the legs to splay. The Happy Strap may be worn either over or under clothing, day and night. It is recommended that “pre-walkers” wear the Happy Strap over their clothes and then under clothes once walking. The adjustable Happy Strap is available in various colours and sized from newborn. The same principle demonstrated in the sitting position applies to the walking base – reducing a broadbase to a more normal walking gait. The Happy Strap also facilitates the automatic bending of the knees when walking. Because the Happy Strap keeps the hips in the right position in relation to the legs, the ankles do not roll the feet inward on the instep as they tend to do when walking with a broad base.

Wendy is a qualified Midwife, Nursing Sister and has also worked at a Paediatric Unit at a clinic in London, UK. Caring for the balance of life and couple with a desire to take care of the needs of vulnerable people has always been an intimate part of Wendy Hicks’ life purpose, career development aspirations and wider social vision.

Her close personal encounter with a disability came when she and her husband Donald became aware that their young daughter couldn't remember nursery rhymes like the others in her class could. They later consulted Educational Psychologists, Speech and Occupational Therapists for help. The diagnosis finally came and their precious daughter was confirmed to be suffering from ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder) with learning barriers.

It became clearer that they had to find her a schooling environment especially and specifically suited to catering for the needs of children who require special education. Yet through this storm Donald and Wendy Hicks found the inspiration. to take the initiative and set up a holistic, caring and high quality educational environment that would meet the specific needs, not only of their child, but many other children with special physical, educational, and social needs. Together they founded Wendon Academy which opened its doors to students in January 2003.

Wendon Academy, whose motto is ‘Moving Forward with Pride’, is an independent self-funded school for children who experience specific barriers to learning and who are not able to flourish in the mainstream educational schooling system. The aim of the academy is to develop learners who are equipped with the necessary knowledge and life skills to cope as balanced and confident individuals in both their personal space and wider communities.

Bernadette was born in 1980 with a rare condition called Arthrogryposis, which affects the joints and limits the range of motion in her hands and legs. The condition in no way affected her intellectually and she initially attended a mainstream school. However, in Grade 3 it became apparent that getting from class to class was becoming a challenge. Her parents reluctantly placed her at a school for the physically disabled in Cape Town.

She completed Matric at Hope School in Parkhurst, Johannesburg. Upon finishing she had the opportunity to travel and live in the United States, North Carolina. Here she realised how much technology made daily living particularly of persons with disabilities easier. She returned to South Africa in 2000 and in 2006 she applied for a position at the City of Johannesburg and was appointed as the Transformation and Disability Officer for the City. This allowed her to get involved in several large scale projects where she made an impact on the lives of local persons with disabilities.

In 2014 she was appointed as a Casual Day Ambassador because she is a role-model with the ability to generate enthusiasm about projects wherever she goes.
