Innovation Agency
Innovators and influencers who help to improve health and care feature in the Innovation Agency podcast. Most guests are from around the North West Coast - Cheshire, Merseyside, Lancashire and South Cumbria - sharing their stories and inspiring our listeners.
The way primary care services are delivered is changing, with different specialists on hand via GP practices and with a growing number of diagnostic tests, screening and treatments available in community pharmacies.
We explore what’s in store for primary care in Cheshire and Merseyside after the launch of a new strategic framework which offers a timeline of actions at both local and system level.
Dr Jonathan Griffiths, Associate Medical Director for Primary Care at NHS Cheshire and Merseyside, and Adam Irvine, Primary Care Partner Member (Pharmacy) at NHS Cheshire and Merseyside, are in conversation with Dr Phil Jennings, Chief Executive of Health Innovation North West Coast.

For anyone involved in an emergency or needing urgent treatment, the experience can be scary and prolonged. For those who have cancer, the prospect is far more daunting.
In Cheshire and Merseyside, health leaders have collaborated to create pathways and processes which ensure that cancer patients can avoid visits to A&E and potentially long stays in hospital awaiting decisions and treatment.
We hear how they created a model which is now being held up as an exemplar nationally.

An entrepreneurial doctor whose company is backed by the Innovation Agency, has become an Innovation Fellow with the NHS Innovation Accelerator.
Dr Michael Watts has helped to create a patient-centred, emergency-support software system designed to improve safety in maternity - Emergency Role Allocation (ERA).
ERA was the brainchild of midwife Caroline Lacey, of Somerset NHS Foundation Trust.
Michael is one of 17 new Innovation Fellows, selected to help spread cutting-edge solutions with the potential to transform healthcare.

The Innovation Agency is working with NHS Cheshire and Merseyside to help people at increased risk because of the combination of suffering a respiratory or cardiovascular condition and living in a cold home.
It’s part of NHS England’s Innovation for Healthcare Inequalities Programme (InHIP) which seeks to address local healthcare inequalities experienced by deprived and other under-served populations.

A significant number of people across the North West Coast are unaware that they have high blood pressure.
During the pandemic, the British Heart Foundation (BHF) reported that nearly half a million people in the UK missed out on starting medication to help prevent heart attacks and strokes.
In our region work is underway to tackle the backlog and suggest action which could lead to lasting change.
In this podcast Dr Andy Knox, a GP in Lancashire and Cumbria who is also the area's associate medical director, and the Innovation Agency's CVD prevention programme lead Dr Julia Reynolds tell Nigel Thompson how they hope to make a difference.

In the north west, a collaboration involving NHS England, Aqua, Health Innovation Manchester and the Innovation Agency are delivering the programme.

Helping establish productive links between businesses and health and social care to benefit patients is just one of the roles of the Innovation Agency's Enterprise and Growth team. At this autumn's Healthcare Excellence Through Technology conference in London, a number of businesses who have capitalised on close ties with the team exhibited their work. In this edition of the Health Innovation podcast Nigel Thompson met some of them and heard more about how the Enterprise and Growth team help bridge the gap between health and business sectors.
One of the keynote speakers at the Innovation Agency Bridging the Gap event was Lindsey Hughes, Director of Research and Engagement in the Innovation, Research and Life Sciences Group and Accelerated Access Collaborative at NHS England.

The Bridging the Gap conference heard from successful clinician and entrepreneur, Dr Mark Ratnarajah, who shared his story of combining his work as a paediatrician with building businesses. He is managing director of C2-Ai, a system which is recognised as providing best practice in waiting list and referral management by the NHS Getting It Right First Time programme.

Realising the benefits of remote monitoring
Identifying the benefits of using technology to monitor care outside hospital is vital in securing support and investment for spreading its use. This includes benefits to patients and carers and benefits to staff and health and care budgets.
This presentation at the Bridging the Gap event offered insights into how a multiagency approach and system support is helping to scale up technology-enabled care in the North West Coast. The speakers were Janet King, Regional Director of Digital Transformation at NHS England; Casey Black, Data Analyst at the Innovation Agency; and Tony Woods, Director of Ops and Digital at the Innovation Agency.

Efforts to tackle the lasting effects of the pandemic were considered by delegates at the Healthcare Excellence Through Technology event held at the Excel Centre in London.

Core20PLUS5 and the Innovation Agency
Core20PLUS5 is a national NHS England and NHS Improvement approach to support the reduction of health inequalities at both national and system level. The approach defines a target population cohort – the ‘Core20PLUS’ – and identifies five clinical areas requiring accelerated improvement. Eileen O’Meara, Clinical Director of the NW Health Inequalities Hub explains what Core20PLUS5 is about and how it is being implemented. Andrew Cooper describes how the Innovation Agency is embedding this targeted approach in projects and programmes in the North West Coast.

A shortlist of proposals for the New Hospitals Programme in Lancashire and South Cumbria has been announced. This is a significant development for the programme, which plans to develop new, cutting-edge facilities, offering the absolute best in modern healthcare and addressing significant problems with the ageing Royal Preston Hospital and Royal Lancaster Infirmary buildings.
Caroline Kenyon talks to three of the people leading the programme about how they reached this important milestone – and how they are going to make the final decision on the best option for the region.

It’s the biggest cause of disability and premature death in the UK yet, in some cases, early diagnosis of high blood pressure could help reduce the numbers affected.
Home blood pressure monitoring, or BP@Home, has been launched in the North West Coast and across England. The process enables patients to remotely record their blood pressure without visiting their doctor.
In this edition of the podcast Caroline Kenyon talks to Jane Briers, a former specialist cardiac nurse, who is leading the blood pressure at home programme for the Innovation Agency. They're joined by Dr Jonathan Griffiths, a GP in Cheshire and clinical lead for Cheshire and Merseyside for the BP@Home project, who explains how the programme is already paying off.

Familial hypercholesterolaemia (or FH for short) is an inherited condition which can lead to extremely high cholesterol levels. It's passed down through families and without treatment, FH can lead to heart disease at a very young age. But it can be treated with medicines and a healthy lifestyle. The key is diagnosis. A pilot scheme supported by the Innovation Agency is aiming to help increase the number of cases of FH, detected at an early age. Dr Sue Kemsley, a GP in Cheshire, is leading the parent-child screening programme for FH and has been explaining more about how it works and the significant difference it could make. The man who leads the organisation which won recognition at the recent NHS in the North Excellence in Supply Awards has been talking about how the innovative use of digital technology is changing lives.
Health Call's systems allow care home staff to remotely monitor residents’ health, quickly identify signs of illness, and make electronic referrals to the appropriate NHS service and won the Patient Experience and overall Supplier of the Year categories.
The awards celebrate inspirational collaborations between the NHS and its suppliers across the North of England.
With almost 4,000 people now registered on the Digital Care Home system, the innovation has enabled more than 30,000 referrals to be made, cut community nurse visits by 30% and saved the NHS around £8 million due to a reduction in unnecessary hospital stays.
The technology has been developed by Durham County Council and the County Durham and Darlington NHS Foundation Trust, which is part of Health Call, a collaboration of seven NHS foundation trusts across the North East and North Cumbria.
Ian Dove is Managing Director and met Nigel Thompson at HETT 2021 to explain more about how support from the AHSN network was instrumental in the development of the flourishing scheme.
A care home manager and a care home owner in Lancashire share their pandemic experiences and talk about plans to improve the way information about patients flows between the NHS and social care.
They are part of a programme to introduce digital systems which can be accessed by different parts of the NHS and social care, made possible with funding from NHSx.

The number of Blackpool mums classed as smokers when they give birth has shown a dramatic decrease.
Up to 3,000 women give birth in Blackpool each year. The percentage classed as smokers once stood at 31 per cent. Now the figure is closer to 21 per cent and falling, making the resort one of the most improved areas in the country.
The success is down to the efforts of a dedicated nine-strong team who work closely with expectant mums to explain the health benefits of not smoking during pregnancy on their baby. Research shared by the Innovation Agency, the Academic Health Science Network for the North West Coast, has helped provide the Blackpool team with additional insight to help mums make potentially life-changing decisions as Nigel Thompson reports.
Collaborations between NHS organisations and their suppliers have resulted in some remarkable examples of innovation as shown by the shortlist for the NHS in the North Excellence in Supply Awards.
They include innovative health and wellbeing checks for health staff in York; the creation of a regional hub in the north east to supply vital PPE; the use of digital tablets to provide music for children, their families and staff at Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital; and a shop continuing to supply wigs for patients undergoing chemotherapy.
Innovation has been at the heart of response to the pandemic.
In his keynote speech to attendees Sir James Mackey, Chief Executive of Northumbria Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust and Chair of the NHS Customer Board for Procurement and Supply, will tell the NHS in the North Excellence in Supply Awards that he hopes the spirit of collaboration and cooperation will continue.

The NHS Clinical Leaders Network has published a call for action to improve the mental health resilience of frontline healthcare staff caring for patients during the COVID-19 pandemic. Its report is based on surveys, interviews and action learning sets with clinicians and managers and as well as the call for action, it includes some stark testimonies and a series of suggestions for managers and leaders to improve mental health support in the workplace. An emergency medicine consultant describes how he and two nurses took action in their own time to help their colleagues cope with the stress of their work. The consultant, Dr Terry McLoughlin of Liverpool University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, explains how their offer of talking therapy and on-demand yoga and meditation grew from three volunteers into an established service across two hospitals. More than a quarter of all COPD admissions in Greater Manchester are for flu. Dr Hoyle and her colleagues explored how to overcome the barriers to taking the flu vaccination and launched a project to promot uptake in secondary care settings. The project is proving so successful the team now plans to extend it to all respiratory outpatient clinics.

Estimates suggest that the lives of up to 234 patients with respiratory disease in Cheshire and Merseyside could be saved each year by doing things slightly differently. An NHS Test Bed in Lancashire and South Cumbria shows that a combination of digital and traditional care for respiratory patients can be highly effective. However, one size does not fit all, patients benefit most from personalised care plans, and giving patients information in a variety of ways increased their ability to manage their condition.

The devolution project in Greater Manchester allowed for a reassessment of priorities. Health Innovation Manchester worked with health and care and industry partners to determine those priorities: the system agreed that a radical shift was needed in how COPD patients are managed and a move from doctor-centric secondary care models to continuous community-based team support.

Teletriage is a 24-hour system offering clinical support to care homes. Its benefits are clear, and include a 78 per cent reduction in NHS 111 calls from care homes. Care home feedback has also been positive, with 93 per cent of staff saying its use has improved the care experience for residents.

Mike Baker talks about a spin-off of the ‘We are the NHS’ campaign which had a big impact on recruitment, particularly of nurses.
Mike, Associate Director of Communications at Wirral University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, delivered an intensive two-week campaign across different social media campaigns using the slogan We are ‘WUTH’. It resulted in a 168 per cent increase in completed applications for band 5 nursing posts compared with the previous two weeks.

Consultant psychiatrist Dr Johannes Cronje of Mersey Care NHS Foundation Trust describes ‘Selling the sizzle not the sausage’ – a different approach to recruitment. Their traditional method of placing ads in a national journal was expensive and not having the desired impact.
They worked with The Guardian on sponsored editorials, using testimonials from staff and supporting with a range of promoted posts on social media. A key feature was video interviews by Deputy Medical Director Dr Arun Chidambaram with consultant colleagues about working at Mersey Care. The result was a huge increase in consultant recruitment.

NHS England Lead Campaign Manager Ian Hampton describes the biggest highlight of his career – leading on the creation and delivery of the ‘We are the NHS’ campaign. He tells how the NHS’s first recruitment campaign for over a decade was delivered at break-neck speed and how retaining a focus on specific audiences directed the creative development. It was important to retain an impartial and evidence-based focus in a complex political environment, to deliver real results.

Georgina McNamara, Executive Lead Nurse for Education at the Sepsis Trust, describes the huge impact of sepsis, a deadly infection which can often be successfully treated if spotted early. She urges families to be alert to the signs of sepsis and to follow their instincts if someone has the symptoms. Her message to health professionals is to use their screening tools and take early action if a patient shows signs of deterioration.
