Walter Simonson is an actual living and working legend in comics, and the good news is that he doesn’t seem like he’s close to done. The man draws and writes this original graphic novel, The Judas Coin, which works a bit like an anthology that spans distant corners of the DC Universe, following the cursed payment for the betrayal of Christ, but also featuring Batman. Simonson is still very much pushing and challenging himself with comics at a point in his career where many would just sit back and put it on cruise control, and it’s incredibly inspiring.

We catch up with the artist to hear how a simple letter lead to bringing him not only to Daredevil, but to return back to Marvel with ongoing work.

As we slide into week #2 of the DC Relaunch, one of the titles I’ve been the most anticipating is Grifter #1by Nathan Edmondson and Cafu. As far as I can tell from the various images we’ve seen, Grifter appears to be the main Wildstorm character getting the biggest push (i.e. His appearance along with the Justice League in the pages of Flashpoint #5 most notably). When I read Grifter #1 while visiting DC Comics’ offices, my initial thought was that it wasn’t what I expected and I really did enjoy it. I did have questions for writer Nathan Edmondson though and got the opportunity to talk to him for this episode of iFanboy – Don’t Miss.

Writer Jeff Lemire explores the life of Smallville's new favorite son, and the relationships he has with it's residents in Superboy. Superman and Batman are all well and good, but what's got writer Josh Williamson excited about his upcoming issue of Superman/Batman #77 is that he's got Supergirl and Robin in his issue, and there might be no character more fun to write than Damian Wayne these days. Williamson is a name you'll become more familiar with in the coming months. Known for his work on Image Comics' Dear Dracula and Overlook, he's had some short stories published by Marvel and DC, but this is his first full issue published by DC Comics. Look for Superman/Batman #77 on shelves this Wednesday, with art by Ale Garza.
Fan favorite, the Incredible Hercules is back, and this time he's a super-god and rallying the entire Marvel Universe of heroes against an impossible foe in Chaos War #1. DC is bringing back some of their classic war titles in a series of one shots. Known as the longtime home for The Losers, Our Fighting Forces told some of the most exciting war tales during its extensive run in the 70s. Writer B. Clay Moore tells us about his experiences in bringing Our Fighting Forces back for one last adventure. Drawing mostly from the original Robert Kanigher stories, he discusses what makes The Losers so interesting and the difficulties in getting everything he wanted into one issue. Following up after the recent One Moment In Time story arc, Mark Waid and Paul Azaceta return as the creative team behind Amazing Spider-Man #642, the first issue of the next story arc called Origin of the Species. One of my favorite new series of the past year has been New Mutants, as written by Zeb Wells. Now that Second Comics is wrapping up, Zeb launches the New Mutants onto their next challenge with Fall of the New Mutants. With fan favorite artist Leonard Kirk coming on board to provide pencils, Zeb is set to take the New Mutants on another adventure, but does give us a moment to breathe in New Mutants #15. Zeb talks about his take on these established characters and how he's been able to make New Mutants matter again in the X-Universe.

Before Matt Fraction become a household name for comics fans by working on such titles as the Invincible Iron Man, Uncanny X-Men, The Immortal Iron Fist and others at Marvel, he and artists Gabriel Ba and Fabio Moon released a 14 issue series at Image Comics called Casanova. It was a 1960s espionage and psychedelia inspired cross dimensional adventure starring lead character, and Mick Jagger look a lot like Casanova Quinn. Now the series is getting not only a relaunch, but a remaster at Icon. Listen in to hear how Cass is being given the full color treatment as well as being hand lettered and expanded on.
This week, Josh talks to Paul Cornell just as his first DC work is about to hit the stands. Action Comics #890 marks Cornell's debut as a DC exclusive creator, on the legendary title. May 10, 2010 - The mystery of the Red Hulk's identity is coming to an end, beginning with Hulk #22. We chat with writer Jeph Loeb about what the state of the Hulk universe is and how the pieces are coming together for quite a finale with this new story arc, World War Hulks. Loeb explains how dating back to Hulk #1, the story has led up to this arc and gives us a tease of what to expect from the next few issues as well as some celebration of a history of Hulk artists who all pitched in on the upcoming books.
May 3, 2010 - Just when you thought there were no more original Zombie stories out there, Chris Roberson and Mike Allred present I, ZOMBIE. The new ongoing series from Vertigo mixes horror, mystery, romance and good old fashioned campy fun. Listen in as writer Chris Roberson sets up the adventures of Gwen Dylan, and 20-something gravedigger who also happens to be a zombie. Gwen has to eat a human brain once a month to keep her wits about her, but there's a catch. Find out about that and the entire cast of I, ZOMBIE, including a 60s Go-Go Ghost, a Wereterrier and a group of paintball playing vampires. April 26, 2010 - Fraggle Rock is making it's return to comics. This Wednesday Archaia is releasing the first issue of their take on the incredibly popular children's program. Writer Heather White and artist Jeff Stokely drop by to talk about the fun and challenging parts of bringing one of their favorite TV shows back to comics. April 19, 2010 - Writer Ron Marz talks to Josh about his new series from Top Cow, about a woman named Patience who kills demons with a big spear, Magdalena #1. But there's more to it than that. Marz has been running things in Witchblade, and the Top Cow Universe for about 5 years, and this is the book he's always wanted to write. There's some political, church intrigue, the aforementioned demons and spears, and a fantastic art team of Nelson Blake II, Sal Regla, and Dave McCaig. Also, a cover by Ryan Sook! April 12, 2010 - With a slew of one shots related to the SIEGE event at Marvel Comics, we check in with fan favorite artist, Jamie McKelvie to get some insight on the artist's point of view when tackling a chapter in a mega-crossover. Jamie explains some of his process in working with his writer, in this case Kieron Gillen, as well as his approach to using technology within his art. Jamie even reveals a bit of fanboy pleasure at getting the chance to draw some of the major villains in the Marvel Universe and wrestles with the physics behind Loki's helmet and those horns.
April 5, 2010 - Jonathan Hickman burst onto the comics scene with Nightly News from Image Comics, and was hailed for his imaginative and socially relevant writing as well as his graphic design influenced art. Following Nightly News, his other works including Red Mass for Mars and Pax Romana established him as a creator to watch. Marvel recognized this and wasted no time in putting him at the helm of their First Family, The Fantastic Four. He also helped bring Nick Fury out of hiding and back on the Marvel map with his current series Secret Warriors. Building on the big ideas and fun super hero action of those titles, he is now revealing the secret history S.H.I.E.L.D. Listen in to hear Jonathan talk about both building on the ideas of Kirby and Lee, and being inspired by them to create new ideas.

March 22, 2010 - Coming out of the shocking events of Justice League: Cry for Justice, writer J.T. Krul has taken the reigns on the Green Arrow family of books, and this week with Justice League: The Rise of Arsenal #1, he begins the journey of Roy Harper, or Red Arrow as he's been known recently, as he finds out about the death of his daughter and the loss of right arm. With the fall of Green Arrow and the rise of Arsenal, Krul is writing some of his favorite characters in the DC Universe and after hearing him talk about it, it's hard to not get as excited as he is for the upcoming stories featuring these characters.
March 15, 2010 - In early 2009 Jeff Parker and Tom Fowler created a despicable, hilarious and magical character named Mysterius The Unfathomable. The Wildstorm series is now available in a collected edition and Tom Fowler is here to talk about it. Listen into hear about the adventures of Mysterius and his new assistant Delphi as they travel around the world of modern magic. Tom discusses how he and Jeff Parker teamed-up for the project and how their mutual love of Douglas Adams served as inspiration.
March 8, 2010 - Take the hidden crevices of the former Soviet biological and chemical weapons, and add in a touch of the supernatural, add Steve Rolston and Dean Trippe on art, and a story by Joe Harris, and you've got Ghost Projekt #1 from Oni Press. February 15, 2010 - This week's Don't Miss book is the landmark 50th issue of Supergirl. One of the great things about comics can be the long history and deep continuity that characters develop. But that same continuity can also stand as a roadblock to new readers. Supergirl has been one of those characters in the past, but now Sterling Gates and Jamal Igle have turned the cousin of everyone's favorite Kryptonian into an accessible, interesting and ultimately entertaining character in the DC landscape. February 1, 2010 - Jason Aaron has already established himself as one of the better writers in comics with his work on Scalped, Ghost Rider and most recently, Wolverine: Weapon X. Taking the most overused character in Marvel Comics and delivering stories that are absolutely worth reading, Aaron has brought his gritty approach mixed with excellent characterization to make Logan a must read each month. Wolverine: Weapon X #10 is no different, with a perfect jumping on point, this one shot with art by C.P. Smith travels down Wolverine's romantic past, present and future, and will definitely suprise you along the way.
January 24, 2010 - G.I. Joe: Cobra II is the follow up to the fantastic 2009 G.I. Joe: Cobra mini series, one of three titles IDW Publishing offered in their relaunch of the Joe franchise. January 18, 2010 - When they announced the resurrected titles for Blackest Night this month, we were all shocked to see Starman #81 as one of the books being resurrected. The legendary run of Starman by James Robinson was one of the best comics of the 1990s, and one of his personal favorites. We never thought we'd see another issue, so the idea of how Robinson planned to return to Opal City and why was one of our foremost questions.

December 14, 2009 - Celebrating what made the Golden Age fun is the point of the Next Issue Project from Image Comics, led by Image founder Erik Larsen, along with some of comic's best talents, the second issue Silver Streak Comics #24 hits comic stands this Wednesday. Ron catches up with Erik Larsen to discuss what makes a good Golden Age story and character and what it takes to put together an anthology like the Next Issue Project.
