Y'all,
Two industry leaders I'm absolutely fascinated by – Jennifer Williams, founder of Physique 57 (one of the best barre brands in the world), and Jack Thomas, creator of The Fit Guide (the gold standard for fitness excellence, like the Michelin Star guide for our industry). They're both revolutionizing how we think about hospitality in boutique fitness!
Tune in to our new series of conversations with amazing industry leaders: Episode 661: The Big Picture with Lise Kuecker, Jennifer Williams of Physique 57, and Jack Thomas of The Fit Guide.
● Building boutique from scratch: Jennifer started Physique 57 in 2005 when boutique studios didn't exist - told architects she wanted it to feel "like coming to my house to work out"
● Hospitality over amenities: Their most successful studio had wear and tear but sold the most memberships because of warm feeling and community - proves it's about connection, not expensive finishes
● Two types of training: What to teach (mechanics for safety) vs. how to teach (hospitality that brings people back) - "you can tell people to do 10 jumping jacks one way, or another way"
● Sales as service: Reframing sales from pushy to helpful - like a washing machine store, clients need guidance to find what's right for them, not to be left to figure it out alone
● The Fit Guide standards: 250 metrics evaluating every element of the member journey - only 90%+ scores earn five stars, representing the top 1-2% of the industry
● Modality gaps revealed: Yoga scored lowest across all seven cities (guru mentality putting teacher at center), while barre scored highest (natural teaching opportunities)
● Gratitude mindset: "We're just so grateful that you're here" - understanding everything clients go through just to show up for class creates servant leadership culture
Check out how both Physique 57 and The Fit Guide are elevating standards across our industry. The opportunities are massive when we focus on hospitality - and Jennifer's right, "the hero of the story is the client."

Y'all,
when someone tells me they can measure my body composition with just my phone camera, I'll admit I was skeptical. But after sitting down with Jason Moore (founder of Ren) and the fabulous data nerd herself, Deborah Roko, I'm convinced we're looking at the future of fitness coaching. And it's arriving faster than you think.
These two are solving the biggest pain point in our industry: what happens during those 163 hours when your clients aren't in your studio.
● Camera magic: Independently validated technology that measures body fat percentage, lean mass, and muscle distribution using just your smartphone - no more $12K DEXA scans or InBody machines
● AI coaching clones: Coaches can literally train their own AI that texts with clients twice daily, providing 24/7 guidance without burning out the human coach
● HRV mastery: Real-time biofeedback through heart rate variability that predicts recovery, stress, and aerobic fitness - plus instant meditation feedback through breath control
● VO2 max breakthrough: Get accurate VO2 max readings through a week of one-minute daily finger scans on your phone camera - no more grueling treadmill testing
● Enterprise scaling: Working with big studio chains to create on-brand AI coaches that embody company values and training philosophy across all locations
● Coach empowerment: 11 years of development focused on making coaches better, not replacing them - Jason's trained 3,000+ coaches as an accredited instructor with NASM, NSCA, and ACSM
● Glucose revolution: Coming soon - blood glucose monitoring through camera technology
● Data integration: Connects with all major wearables to create holistic health pictures that actually guide meaningful action
Jason's background as both a software engineer AND a coach gives him the rare ability to understand what coaches actually need versus what tech companies think they need. The result? Technology that amplifies human coaching instead of trying to replace it.
This isn't about replacing the human connection - it's about giving your clients the guidance they're craving when you can't be there, while giving you back your sanity. Because being a coach means wearing every hat from therapist to cheerleader to sales rep, and burnout is inevitable without better tools.

Y’all, a teacher training program can be a game-changer for your studio.
It can increase your cash flow, enhance your reputation, and you a wonderful group of trained instructors who can join your studio family.
But let’s be real – running a teacher training program is hard work.
It means extra hours, long weekends and a significant investment in energy and resources.
So if you put in all that extra effort and offer a teacher training program this year, you have to make sure it’s a doggone sell-out.
And that’s exactly what Studio Coach Allison Zang will help you do in this week’s episode of The Business Of Boutique Fitness. With 15 years of experience running a successful Pilates studio in Central Pennsylvania, Allison knows just what it takes to make a teacher training program a success. Believe it or not, there are leaders, politicians and policymakers out there who still think of fitness as recreation.
And worse, they tax it the same way too.
In reality, gyms and fitness studios play a critical role in empowering people to maintain their basic health, prevent chronic and acute illness and live happy, fulfilled lives.
That’s why we need people like Brett Ewer to advocate for our industry and convince legislators and policymakers that what we do matters. In the face of ever-changing legislation and regulations, people like Brett are working to make a case for our industry and demonstrate how we critically impact society at the local, state and federal levels.
Join me in Episode 557 of The Business of Boutique Fitness as I chat with Brett Ewer, Head of Government Relations at CrossFit, about the importance of shaping policies that protect the fitness industry and ensure that boutique fitness not only survives, but continues to thrive.

Here’s what we’re talking about in this episode:
The guest, Brian O'Rourke, is the CEO of Vedere Ventures, president of the Fitness Industry Technology Council, and co-founder of Moon Mission Media.
Brian discusses how growing up in a military family taught him perseverance and adaptability and how hospitality has influenced his experience-driven fitness businesses.
The importance of understanding which numbers matter when it comes to running a business is emphasized, including operating margin, lifetime value of customers, and acquisition costs.
The challenges of reducing cost per acquisition in digital marketing are discussed, with Brian noting that not all attribution models from Meta or Google are reliable.
The fitness industry has been built on venture capital models, but the importance of building sustainable, profitable businesses is emphasized.
Knowing how to see is a guiding principle for Brian's investments, and he emphasizes the importance of understanding what numbers really matter when it comes to profitability and sustainability in a business.

Y’all, studio owners are often super reluctant to embrace new technology.
I get it – the idea of adding another tool to your already overflowing plate can seem like a lot. Not to mention the fear that technology and automation will diminish the human element in your business.
But I wanna let you in on a little secret today.
The truth is, if you use it right, automation platforms can actually help you strengthen your relationship with your clients.
These platforms can automate repetitive tasks, streamline studio operations and organize data efficiently, so you can free up your time to focus on what matters most – connecting with your clients and building your community.
And that’s exactly what we’re discussing in this week’s episode of The Business Of Boutique Fitness! Join Studio Grow Coach Peter as he chats with Nathan from LoyalSnap, an automation platform designed to help boutique fitness studios build stronger relationships with their clients. Learn all about the role of automation in boutique fitness, the pitfalls you need to avoid, and how simple, functional tech tools can be a game-changer for studio owners.

There’s more to living than not dying.
That’s what Susan Holden told herself after being diagnosed with invasive cancer in 2004.

Susan’s battle with cancer made her realize there had to be more to life than just avoiding death. She built Surviving Strong as a safe space for anyone who’s struggling – to help them live life to the fullest and give them a community that will be there for them no matter what.
Tune in to this week’s episode to learn about Susan’s mission, understand Surviving Strong’s unique philosophy and get a glimpse into what marketing looks like for mission-driven businesses like Susan’s.

Now, this may not sound like a lot to you, or it could sound like a fortune, but this amount literally can be a life-changer. Today, I want to show you how you can create more freedom in your life and business!
On today’s show we’re deep diving back in to one f the most important and impactful episodes we’ve had over our last 100 shows! We’re looking at 7 mindset shits you’ve got to make to build an epic empire. One thing that I’ve learned extensively over this last decade is that the biggest thing holding you back is what’s sitting in your head!
It’s time for another “Best of” and we’re heading back to part two of our series on how to deal with low cost competitors. So let’s wrap up exactly what your strategy should be to stop competing in a price-sensitive market and to start owning your value!
Today it’s time for another “Best of” episode, and we’re looking back at what you can do when a low cost competitor is killing your business. Why? Because this is probably the #1 biggest concern clients come to us with. So how do you compete in an oversaturated price-sensitive market? Today, we’ll learn how you don’t even have to!
Today it’s time for another “Best of” episode! Over the years, we’ve learned that 20% of our clients brought in 80% of our income. Without a doubt, these are our highest-paying customers and the ones that we’re most protective of. So let’s take a peak inside of your own business and determine your top tier clients. There’s so much more that you can do once you have this information!
Today it's time for a "Best of", and we're going back to an Epic Mindset Shift I recorded on embracing your real value. Why is this so important? Until this shift can happen, you're never going to be able to own what your services are truly worth! So let's make a breakthrough today and guide yourself to finally changing what you're worth.
In this “Best of” episode you’ll learn:
How to leverage your time and business to make so much more (and work so much less)
The way to do business on your own terms
In this “Best of” episode you’ll learn:

The difference between good debt and bad debt
Over the next four weeks, we’ll be deep diving back in to some of the most important and impactful episodes we’ve had over our last 100 shows! This week, we’re talking about the epic mindset shift of avoiding the “People Pleaser Plague”. I think it’s actually more common with entrepreneurs than we could ever think, so we’re sitting down and tackling how you provide amazing customer service and an amazing experience, without falling prey to every demand a customer asks of you.
Over the next four weeks, we’re deep diving back in to some of the most important and impactful episodes we’ve had over our last 100 shows! This week, we’re looking at referrals done right, because you do not have to do this in a sleazy way. Every client has an opportunity to literally become three more clients if you just inject in these simple systems to draw word-of-mouth marketing right into your business.
In this “Best Of” episode we’re joined by Amber McCue. Amber is the founder of NiceOps and a business operations expert, and she shares how you can do what you love AND follow the money, how you can gain from creating a time budget, and the best way to focus and take action!
In this “Best Of” episode, we’re looking at the ways we use email marketing to rapidly grow our company. Automated systems, funnels, surveys and more – it’s all covered here!
We’re ending 2017 with another of the “Best Of” series, and today we’re talking all about marketing funnels: what exactly they are, why you need them in your business and how you can implement them to achieve maximum results!
We’ve been moving through the best of the best episodes of this year, and I have to say that it was no surprise to me when this one jumped to the very top of the list. The fact of the matter is, most of us are confronted with one question by new prospective clients: How much do you cost? There are three ways you can answer this that will make all the difference to turning that prospect into a long-term client!
We are right in the middle of our “Best Of” series, and I am so excited to reshare this episode with you! One of the biggest questions I get: I’m ready to expand my team, but I have no idea how to pay them?
