Every human needs love and acceptance to survive, yet we all seem to have a different definition of what love actually is. This podcast seeks to explore various definitions of love through storytelling and conversations with visionary thinkers, artists, activists, leaders and explorers. We will investigate love through 3 frames: love of self, love in partnership and love in the collective and these episodes will seek to uncover important nuggets of love that will spread into the radio waves and beyond.

Ethan Russo, MD, is a board-certified neurologist, psychopharmacology researcher, and former Senior Medical Advisor to GW Pharmaceuticals. He served as study physician to GW Pharmaceuticals for three Phase III clinical trials of Sativex.
He is author of Handbook of Psychotropic Herbs, co-editor of Cannabis and Cannabinoids: Pharmacology, Toxicology and Therapeutic Potential, and author of The Last Sorcerer: Echoes of the Rainforest. He was founding editor of Journal of Cannabis Therapeutics, selections of which were published as books: Cannabis Therapeutics in HIV/AIDS, Women and Cannabis: Medicine, Science and Sociology, Cannabis: From Pariah to Prescription, and Handbook of Cannabis Therapeutics: From Bench to Bedside. He has also published numerous book chapters, and over thirty articles in neurology, pain management, cannabis, and ethnobotany.

Devin Ryan is living with Glioblastoma and uses the Optune helmet to treat her tumor. She loves being outdoors, lightsaber fencing and connecting with others facing a similar diagnosis.
Anne Donguy is the mother of a 12 yo boy named Anatole who was diagnosed in May 2018 with a Diffuse Midline Glioma (DMG) on the thalamus. At that time, the tumor was inoperable, incurable, and they were told soon enough after radiotherapy and a first line of chemo that nothing could be done. Now, with the help of xCures and the Musella Foundation, Anatole found a clinical trial drug he could use and his tumor shrunk by more than 80%. Anatole, despite important sequels (hemiparesi, bad vision, dizziness, fatigue), is a little guy who goes to school, has friends, plays checks and lives a life as normal as possible. He is a little miracle.
Anne wrote a novel (in French) that is inspired by their story, it is called an exceptional summer.

Pantera Sarah is a Wisconsin native who has lived in Los Angeles since 1994. For over 20 years she promoted some of the hottest nightclubs in Hollywood. She produced the Emmy award winning “Yes We Can” video in support of President Obama”s campaign in 2008 and produced two coffee table books with over 200 celebrities , The Beauty Book for Brain Cancer-Editions 1 & 2, (www.thebeautybook.org) that benefited brain cancer research.

Dr. Zain Allison is a Lakewood CO based neurosurgeon and spine surgeon who specializes in cranial and spinal neurosurgery with an interest in neurotrauma, neuro-oncology, open neurovascular surgery, and minimally invasive and traditional spine surgeries. Dr. Allison has worked in Madagascar and Bali, and founded a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, “Gratia Servo,” to help fund access to emergency medical care in Madagascar. Working in different regions of the world as well as the US has given Dr. Allison a unique perspective when caring for patients with different backgrounds, approaching difficult medical decisions by treating patients as if they are part of his family. His goal is to inform patients of all of their options, both surgical and nonsurgical, while guiding them toward realistic expectations.

He helped create the first online resources for brain tumor patients: The first online support group dedicated to brain tumor topics, the first registry of treatments and outcomes for brain tumor patients – called the brain tumor virtual trial, the first online directory of clinical trials for brain tumors (and helped the NIH create clinicaltrials.gov!) and the first video library of brain tumor topics. Dr. Jordana Jacobs is a clinical psychologist in private practice in New York City. Her approach is integrative, combining psychodynamic and existential therapy into her treatment of patients. Dr. Jacobs’ training at Memorial Sloan Kettering working with terminally ill cancer patients, her studies in Northern India, and her Vipassana meditation practice inspired her research on the complex relationship between death awareness and love. Her dissertation, entitled “Till Death do us Part: The Effect of Mortality Salience on Satisfaction in Long-term Romantic Relationships” specifically explored the ways in which priming for death has the potential to increase intimacy in partnerships. In addition to seeing patients, Dr. Jacobs gives presentations and leads retreats aimed towards helping people accept inevitable mortality so that they are able to live and love more fully.

Garett Reppenhagen is the son of a Vietnam Veteran and grandson of two World War II Veterans. He served in the U.S. Army as a Cavalry/Scout Sniper in the 1st Infantry Division. Garett completed a deployment in Kosovo on a 9-month peace-keeping mission and a combat tour in Baquaba, Iraq. Garett gained an Honorable Discharge in May of 2005 and began working as a veterans advocate and a dedicated activist. He served as the Chairman of the Board of Iraq Veterans Against the War, worked in Washington, DC, as a lobbyist and as Vice President of Public Relations for the Nobel Prize winning Veterans For America, as a Program Director for Veterans Green Jobs and was the Rocky Mountain Director for Vet Voice Foundation. Garett lives in Colorado where he serves as the Executive Director for Veterans For Peace.

Artie Gonzales is the creative who almost never was. A juvenile-tried-as-an-adult at the age of 16, he spent 21-years of a Life sentence in the California prison system, eight of which included housing within Pelican Bay’s notorious super-max Solitary Confinement unit. It was here that he evolved past the brutality of his surroundings, as well as the highly political stature he held as a gang leader, committing himself to rehabilitation and non-violence.
Released as a model prisoner by the Board of Parole Hearings in 2015, he then dedicated himself to building a new life. Applying the same acumen and intelligence that helped him survive the inhumane conditions of the prison system, he has become a leader in his community, an advocate for legislative reforms, and a member of several social justice organizations.
In this conversation Ethan and Artie discuss how he found love for himself and with others in prison, the politics of the California prison system, how he supports people coming out of the system and the work Artie is doing to share important stories of those on the inside.

Tiffany Trenda is a multidisciplinary performance artist born in 1979 in Los Angeles. She received her BFA from Art Center College of Design and her MFA from UCLA Design and Media Arts program. Tiffany has won countless awards for her innovative work across the globe with exhibitions in Asia, The Americas and Europe and inclusion in the permanent collection of the Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art. Trenda’s work explores the relationship of the body to today’s ever-changing technologies by creating living sculptures with wearables, donned with screens. This represents how our bodies are constantly shifting between the physical and the simulated, making unconventional forms of presence and embodiment. She explores the phenomenology of the body and how simulation affects our intimacy, memory, and our senses.

The internationally known sex educator Maggie Tapert has been leading her own brand of unique seminars and workshops for more than twenty years. Her pioneering work in the field of female sexuality is rooted in a profound focus on feminine pleasure and desire. Maggie Tapert was born in the USA and spent most of her adult life in Switzerland. Crash Barbosa is a political activist, abolitionist, organizer, rapper, writer, and actor.
Born in New York and raised in Los Angeles, Crash started writing poetry at a young age. When he turned 18 years old, Crash turned down an offer from Columbia University after realizing his morals didn’t align with many educational institutions and decided to focus on building himself. Over the span of his career, Crash has been an outspoken political activist and mental health advocate. By working in film/music and having family ties to the Hollywood scene, Crash is fully immersed when it comes to understanding the entertainment industry.
Currently, Crash is partnered with “Underground Railroad Entertainment Group” while Executive Producing a Documentary Series and working on his upcoming Album “How to Be an Activist.”
Early on, Crash decided to use his platform and large following/fan base and focus on changing the world. While only speaking truth to the masses, Crash stands behind his words, his politics, and his character.

rev alison lee schuettinger is an ordained interfaith minister, faculty of sustainable systems at Parsons School of Design, professional photographer, writer and artist pursuing a Doctorate of Ministry in Women's Religious Leadership at Drew University. Her ministry is grounded in nature based principles and focused on gender reconciliation as a needed solution to climate change. She has over ten years of experience working in education for sustainability across a variety of organizations including National Wildlife Federation, The New School, Department of Education and local non-profits. Jomana Ismail is an author, endurance sports athlete and a business trainer. She wrote her book 24 Days: Following the Nile on Foot based on a true story. In 2018 she walked 900 km, almost the length of Egypt, on foot. The walk was both a physical and mental challenge that was fueled by the people she met and the insights she gained around acceptance or lack thereof.
Jomana was raised in Cairo, Egypt in a middle class family and currently is a standup paddle athlete having won the national championship and participated in the first ICF World Championships in Qingdao in 2019. Jomana often participates in endurance sports challenges; she has paddled from Minya to Cairo, 250 km, in 5 days and she has hiked the highest and toughest mountains in Egypt. She is currently working as an instructional designer and a business trainer and consultant.

Atoosa Rubenstein is the former Editor in Chief of Seventeen Magazine and Founder/Editor in Chief of CosmoGIRL! In 1998, Rubenstein created a prototype for CosmoGIRL! within 48 hours and was offered the job on the spot making her, at 26, the youngest Editor in Chief in the over 100 year history of Hearst Magazines. After a successful run at CosmoGIRL!, Hearst acquired Seventeen and tapped Rubenstein to turn the venerable title around. After just one year at the title, Rubenstein reversed a five year decline in Seventeen's newsstand sales and delivered a total newsstand growth of 23% within two years. The following year, Rubenstein left the industry altogether to undergo a grueling 13 year personal excavation and discovery mission that lead to three of her own daughters and now, a twice-a-week love letter Atoosa Unedited, written for her beloved readers, now adults in their own right.

Can love exist when two people have completely opposing beliefs and views? Scott Keoni Shigeoka spent a year on the road meeting people with different perspectives. He went to Trump rallies (he's a Democrat), lived in rural Appalachia (he lives in the San Francisco Bay Area), and conversed with religious leaders (he's queer). Through his journey, surprising and illuminating conversations and relationships emerged. His takeaway? Even in a time of immense division, we can tap into the learnable skill of curiosity. From higher education campuses to elected officials, Scott works with communities across the country to harness the power of curiosity to heal our wounds, strengthen relationships and reunite the country.

John (who Ethan knows as Matthew) grew up going to schools around the Boston area. From Kindergarten to 2nd grade Ethan and John were best friends as John was bussed into the suburban Brookline school district as part of the METCO program that brought inner city kids into suburban schools. Michael Novick has been an activist all his life. Growing up a working class Orthodox Jew facing personal questions about sexuality and justice in New York, he became an advocate for human rights as a student at Brooklyn College where he joined the fight to admit students of Black and Puerto Rican descent in the 1960s. This advocacy hasn't stopped as Michael has been a strong voice in the movement for gay rights, finding solidarity with union workers and Chicanos, standing in support with Black Lives Matter and pushing against overt and covert white supremacy in police and groups across the country. Michael has been the publisher of Turning The Tide, a newsletter fighting fascism, colonialism and white supremacy as part of Anti-Racist Action-LA and People Against Racist Terror. This conversation explores Michael's long life in activism and the lessons he's learned grappling with self-criticism, class struggle, sexuality, settler colonialism, bioregionalism and ultimately love.
