GOD’S GYM 1. Godliness versus Greed [1 Timothy 4:6-10 (especially 7b-8); 2 Peter 2:14] A. Dangerous Training - Trained in Greed So…be nourished by the Words of the Faith/Good Doctrine B. Limited Good - Trained for Bodily Strength So…distinguish eternal value from temporary value C. Best - Trained in and for Godliness So…“work out your salvation with fear and trembling; for it is God who is at work in you, both to will and to work for his good pleasure” (Philippians 2:12-13) 2. Maturity versus Immaturity [Hebrews 5:11-14; Hebrews 12:7-13] So…Pursue Wisdom developed by Consistent Spiritual Disciplines So…Pursue Holiness and Fruit developed by God’s Loving Discipline
“We exist to Proclaim and Display Jesus”
Nike = Greek word for victory/overcome
A. 1 Corinthians 9:24-27 1. Winning/Competition as God’s Design Temporary Competition… Glorify God, Good for Others, My Joy Churches not afraid of success…but must define carefully 2. Winning/Competition easily Broken by Sin a) Perishable Reward b) Wrong Enemy c) Exposes our Sin and our need for a Savior *Things matter...some things matter much more than others APP - Your family should never fear your team losing
B. Revelation 12:10-12 (John 16:33; Ephesians 6:10-12) 1. Victory in Christ a) Defeat of the Ultimate Enemy b) No Condemnation for those in Christ (Rom. 8:1) 2. Victory in the Church a) By the Blood of the Lamb b) Word of their Testimony PROCLAIM JESUS c) Loved not their lives even to death DISPLAY JESUS
PLAY IS PRAISE 1 Corinthians 10:1-5 - Beware False Worship
1 Corinthians 10:6-12 - Beware Deadly Paths (James 1:14-15; Exodus 32; Psalm 115:8)
A. Idolatry (instead of looking to God) B. Immorality (instead of living for God) C. Testing God (instead of trusting God) D. Grumbling (instead of loving God/others)
1 Corinthians 10:13-30 - Better Path: Freedom in Christ A. Escape/Endure Temptation B. Flee Idolatrous Worship/Syncretism C. Embrace Freedom with Restraint/Limits •God’s Word / Spirit’s Guidance •Parental Leadership / Authority •Church (Multiple generations and perspectives)
1 Corinthians 10:31-33 - Better Worship: Playing to the Glory of God

B. The Good of Others (Spiritual Growth; Salvation) -How does this sport/activity/hobby help others know and follow Jesus?
C. My Joy (Zechariah 8:3-5; also Isaiah 11 & Revelation 21) -How does this sport/activity/hobby display the eternal joy and freedom that comes from God’s presence?
Sports? I hate Sports! *Think: Recreation/Leisure/Hobbies/Culture
Sports? I love Sports! *How do we glorify and honor God?
Options for Sports/Culture Condemn, Consume, OR Re-Create RECREATION IS PART OF GOD’S PLAN FOR RE-CREATION
Key Scriptures for Week 1 Genesis 1:1, 26-28 John 1:1-3, 14 Romans 3:23; 6:23 1 Corinthians 10:31 1 Timothy 4:4-5 Revelation 21:1-5
***When we’re finished today, I hope you will… 1. Give Thanks to God for the Goodness of His Creation 2. Recognize Signs of Brokenness in our Lives and World 3. Trust Jesus to Transform Your Life 4. Recover and Pursue God’s Design for Culture 5. Look to the Future (Now and Eternally) with Hope and Joy
Forgetfulness: We are prone to wander from God. Endurance requires daily maintenance, especially in light of…
A. UP// Hardships & Trials: REMEMBER God intends to perfect our faith, not crush it (James 1:2-4, Romans 8:28) B. IN// Temptation & Sin: REMEMBER 1) our temptations are common to others 2) God is faithful 3) Jesus is our escape 4) Catering to sin in not the path to endurance. (1 Cor. 10:12-13, Heb. 12:14) C. OUT// Persecution: REMEMBER we do not suffer in vain, we suffer with Jesus----therefore, we go to our neighbors and to the nations knowing the Kingdom reward is greater than any persecution (1 Cor. 4:11-13, Matt. 5:11-12)
Framework for Endurance from Matthew 28:16-20 Verse 20: Our hope for endurance--Jesus’ never-ending, never-forsaking presence. Verse 16: The most important thing about your faith is not it’s strength but it’s object.
We can Endure… 1. Up by acknowledging Jesus’ authority that His promise to be with us to the end can be trusted. 2. IN by observing Jesus’ teaching, and, therefore, trusting God is committed to our holiness and conforming us to Jesus. 3. OUT by forsaking our own kingdoms and realizing that God’s kingdom is coming.
How will we Endure? 1. God the Father is an Enduring God. Psalm 145:13, 118:1, 119:90 2. God the Son endured for the Glory of the Father & for our good. Heb 12:1-4 3. God the Spirit will enable our endurance as we seek to endure. Phil 2:12-13
What is My Next Step in Endurance? 1. Trust Jesus. Turn from sin. Be baptized. Then keep trusting/turning. 2. Invest time in reading, studying, meditating on, and memorizing the Word so that you may continuously REMEMBER Jesus. 3. Do not neglect weekly Corporate Worship/Groups/Family Worship 4. Spend time with those more mature in the faith than yourself. 5. Share your struggles of temptation and sin to others you trust. 6. Help others endure. Encourage the hurting. Contact the missing. 7. Pray for & create space for your neighborhood and the nations. 8. Talk to others about why you are following Jesus. 9. Keep pressing on---until He returns or calls you home.

Matthew 28:16-20 “Pentecost Sunday!”
Week 1 = UP (Worship; Trust Christ; Prayer and Praise) Week 2 = IN (Relational Discipleship; Teach to Observe) Week 3 = OUT (Missions; Pentecost; Serve Day) Week 4 = Enduring Together (Lord’s Supper)
An Acts 1:8 Strategy -Empowered/Sent by the Spirit (saves, gifts, sanctifies, sends) -You will be witnesses, not salespeople (proclaim and display) -Expansive, boundary-crossing vision
With Matthew 28:18-20 Purposes -Go = Be Intentional and Urgent (not Manipulative and Panicked) -Make Disciples = Baptizing and Teaching to Observe -All Nations = “The Great Commission is the most anti-racist phrase in the Bible.” - Nik Ripken
For a Revelation 7:9-10 Goal ***Neighborhoods and Nations “Missions is not the ultimate goal of the church. Worship is. Missions exists because worship does not. Worship is ultimate, not missions, because God is ultimate, not man. When this age is over, and the countless millions of the redeemed fall on their faces before the throne of God, missions will be no more. It is a temporary necessity. But worship abides forever. So worship is the fuel and goal of missions.” - John Piper
What about now? • Trust in Jesus - Pray for Forgiveness; Be Baptized; Grow in Faith • Live Intentionally and Urgently • Love Your Neighbors, Embrace the Nations • Open Doors for others if you can’t “go” as much as you want • Transformative Summer - Pray, Give, Go
Relational Discipleship from Matthew 28:16-20 1. A call to make DISCIPLES 2. A call to teach disciples TO OBEY 3. A call that involves more than ONE PERSON
Barriers to Relational Discipleship 1. Not practiced in building relationships 2. Requires sacrifice/humility 3. Not having the right purpose
Framework for Relational Discipleship 1. Private-together 2. Weekly Gatherings 3. Close Relationships 4. Family
Helps for Relational Discipleship 1. Determine your need 2. Embrace the awkward 3. Be real 4. Commit
What is my next step in Relational Discipleship? 1. Pray for relational discipleship in your life. 2. Consider how to grow your current relationships. 3. Think about how your current Sunday School class/small group can facilitate relational discipleship. 4. If you are not already in a group, consider joining or starting one. Email jeff@emmausokc.org
Matthew 28:16-20
Barriers to Prayer from Matthew 28:16-20 1. Not based on Jesus’ Authority • so it feels Powerless and lacks Faith 2. Not based on Jesus’ Mission • so it feels Meaningless and lacks Urgency
Framework for Prayer from Matthew 28:16-20 UP - Worship (both private and corporate) -Trust Jesus; Baptized; Behold IN - Discipleship / Spiritual Growth (for you and others) -Pulpit, Programs, Person, Parents, Private OUT - Missions / Evangelism (for you and others) -Go (Live, Learn, Work, Play); All Nations
*If God answered my prayers, what would be the impact for: Our Church, The Next Generation, My Neighborhood, My Life?
Helps for Prayer 1. Pray on the spot, in-person, whenever possible 2. Pray spontaneously through text, email, handwritten notes, social media, and phone calls 3. Pray strategically through reminders, lists, and “daily offices” 4. Pray the Gospel and God’s Word
What is my Next Step in Prayer? 1. Pray for Salvation/Repentance 2. Build and Evaluate a Prayer List/Journal 3. Set aside Times/Places for Prayer 4. Pray God’s Word as I read 5. Pray out-loud with my family or small group 6. Pray spontaneously with someone this week 7. Gather a Prayer Group or Cottage Prayer Meeting 8. Deacons Display Godly Character and Good Reputation D. Deacons Represent Service, they don’t Restrict It 1. Lead Teams and Get Others Involved 2. Increase (not limit) number of people serving E. Deacons Set the Stage for Growth
What do we hope you find at Emmaus? • Deacons intent on being Leading Servants • Pastors intent on the Word and Praye
1 Corinthians 15:35-54
Corrupted…but Changed. Wasting Away…but not a Waste.
What about the Resurrection Body? I. Two-Part Question - How? (Manner) What kind? (Quality/Substance) A. Dismissive; Mocking; No concept of future body B. “Which ‘you’ will be in Heaven? Senile you with dementi? Midlifecrisis you?” - Richard Dawkins
II. The Analogies and Answers A. Different but the Same 1. Analogies from Nature (Wisdom Lit; Jesus’ Parables) 2. Analogies from Genesis B. Transformed for the New Creation 1. Contrasts between Sown and Raised 2. Analogy from Adam and Christ 3. Natural (Soul/Earthly) and Spiritual (Spirit/Heavenly) a. Genesis 2:7 and Ezekiel 37 b. Philippians 3:20-21 C. All will be Changed 1. Clothing and Inheritance Analogies 2. 1 Thessalonians 4:13-18 3. Isaiah 25:8
Resurrection of the Dead isn’t irrational or meaningless…
So what? I. Live with Humble Hope A. Romans 8:18-25 B. This Life/World isn’t the End of the Story C. Remember: “Already/Not Yet” II. Don’t GIVE IN to Sin A. Luke 12:13-21 B. Live for What Matters Most C. Push Back against Corruption III. Don’t GIVE UP on Life A. 2 Corinthians 4:16-18 B. Wasting Away isn’t a Waste 1. Inward Change before Outward Change 2. Renewed and Prepared 3. Strength through Weakness 4. God Redeems and Sustains
“When the state of the world leaves you dismayed, it is not the time to worry, but instead to expectantly and excitedly pray. For God always builds in the ruins. Resurrection always bursts from a graveyard. Revival springs from a remnant.” - Mark Sayers
1 Corinthians 15:20-34
Adam - Sin - Death - Away from God’s Glory Christ - Cross - Resurrection - Toward God’s Glory
Order A. Christ’s Resurrection and Reign B. Christian Resurrection at Christ’s Return C. The End Goal (which is really just the beginning!) • Destruction of Sinful Power and Death • Deliverance of Kingdom to God • God’s Glorious, Ultimate Reign
So what? A. Live with Hope and Stability in the Resurrection B. Pursue Holiness C. Sacrifice and Risk to make the Resurrection known D. Get around people who help you do these things
1 Corinthians 15:12-19
A. Paul’s Argument: No Resurrection = No Hope 1. Proclaiming Christ is a Waste 2. Faith has No Real Effect 3. We are Lying about God 4. We are still in Our Sins 5. Those who have died have Perished 6. We have Only This Life •So we should be pitied for suffering and sacrificing for something that is a lie
B. Paul’s Message: Jesus is the Resurrection and Life 1. Proclaiming Christ is Crucial 2. Faith is Effective 3. God’s Power and Word are True 4. We are Free from Sin in Christ 5. Death is not the End 6. We live for more than This Life •So we should endure suffering and make sacrifices with eternal perspective

1 Corinthians 12:14-31
I. Unity in Diversity A. Needed 1. Recognizing one’s own value = not saying “I don’t belong” Danger- become bitter/envious; become disengaged Continually ask: “God, how do you want to work in and through me to build up others and proclaim and display Jesus? 2. Recognizing the value of others = not saying “I don’t need them” 3. Recognizing God’s Authority and Plan Downplaying our place in the Body means not trusting the goodness of God’s plan. Overstating our place in the Body means not trusting the wisdom of God’s limits.
B. Known 1. Honoring one another 2. Same care for one another 3. Suffering, Mourning, and Rejoicing with one another

Joshua 11 / Hebrews 4 - The God-Who-Saves gives Rest
Joshua 11:23 So Joshua took the whole land, according to all that the Lord had spoken to Moses. And Joshua gave it for an inheritance to Israel according to their tribal allotments. And the land had rest from war. (see also 21:44 and 22:4)
Rest in the Old Testament Creation - Promised Land - Sanctuary/Temple -Sabbath
Hebrews 4:8-10 For if Joshua had given them rest, God would not have Spoken of another day later on. So then, there remains a Sabbath rest for the people of God, for whoever has entered God's rest has also rested from his works as God did from his.
Rest in Hebrews/New Testament Already (Resting in Christ) - Not Yet (Heavenly Rest)
What prevents Rest? A. Fear- what we see overpowers what we believe B. Unbelief- unfaithfulness to God’s promises and power C. Disobedience- failing to heed God’s Word and Good News
What empowers Rest? 1. UP (Worship) -Looking to Christ’s Victory and Salvation -Worship of the Creator, Redeemer, and Judge 2. IN (Discipleship) -Commitment to one another / Mutual Encouragement -Spiritual Disciplines (abide, meditate, rest) 3. OUT (Mission) -Speaking about peace and hope in Christ -Showing an example of rest and fulfillment
Everyone strives for Rest/Stability The question is, Do you find this Rest in the worldly pursuit of goods and power, the spiritual pursuit of personal peace, or the Christian pursuit of God’s Kingdom made possible by Christ’s victory?

JOSHUA 10
First Sunday of Advent -Advent is part of the Church Calendar. -Advent is the slow, purposeful approach to Christmas, in a frantic, often purposeless world. -Advent draws us to watchful hope.
Promise of Defeated Enemies. Genesis 3:15- (The Lord God said to the serpent,) “I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and her offspring; he shall bruise your head, and you shall bruise his heel.”
Picture of Defeated of Enemies. Joshua 10
The defeated kings/evil powers are overcome.
Defeated Enemies at First Advent. Matthew 2:1-12
The defeated kings/evil powers are overcome.
Defeated Enemies at Second Advent. Mark 13:24-37 (this is one of the Year B, First Sunday of Advent readings in churches around the world) Romans 16:20- The God of peace will soon crush Satan under your feet. The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you.
Response In a world that makes you want to look away, we close our eyes in prayerful and worshipful trust, and we open our eyes with purposeful and missional hope!
JOSHUA 9 Lack of Spiritual Discernment hinders the mission, but God remains Merciful, Powerful, and Faithful.
Key Phrase -Joshua 9:14 “…did not ask counsel from the Lord.” Key Words -Heard (v. 1) -Cunning (v. 3) -Covenant (v. 6-7, 11, 15-16) -Delivered/Saved (v. 26)
TWO NEEDS OF GOD’S PEOPLE ON MISSION 1. Need for Spiritual Discernment Areas of Primary Spiritual Discernment: + Does it add anything to God’ Word? - Does it take away from who Jesus is and what he has done? x Does it multiply the requirements for salvation? / Does it divide the Body of Christ?
How to Discern: - Elders/Pastors to shepherd, feed, and lead the Church - Members discerning teaching based on Scripture (Acts 17) - Members using the Spiritual Gift of Discernment - Distinguish Heresy, False Teaching, Mistakes, and Disagreements - Evaluate the Person’s Character and Direction of Life - Discern the Discernment Ministries - Learn from Historical, Global, and Theological Voices - Determine the Origin- Inside or Outside the Church - Operate with Humility and Love within the Church, even as we Speak the Truth and Pursue Holiness
THE CHALLENGE: How do we become a church/individuals of Truth and Spiritual Discernment AND Mercy and Spiritual Humility? *By worshiping Jesus and following Him!
JOSHUA 8 / 1 SAMUEL 17 “Jesus is coming to wage holy war on Babylon. Holy War is more than an Old Testament phenomenon; it is New Testament hope.” - Joshua Ryan Butler *If God’s Character is Good and His Plan (Gospel) is Victorious, how do passages of “war” impact our lives/church/society?
We pray, “Come, Lord Jesus”
Sermon on the Mount and Romans | Matthew 5:38-39; Romans 12:18-13:4 Turn the Cheek & Protect the Weak
Just War Theory must uphold these for a society
Ephesians and 2 Timothy/1 Peter | Ephesians 6:10-19; 2 Timothy 2:3-4; 1 Peter 5:8-9 Spiritual Warfare = Spiritual Means for Spiritual Purposes
What should we do? “We exist to Proclaim and Display Jesus” - We proclaim Jesus as Savior and Lord (‘holy war’ language!) - We display Jesus through suffering and sacrifice. - Up - We worship God as the Creator, Savior, and Judge. - In - We separate from idolatry. We do justice, love kindness, and walk humbly with our God. - Out - We share Good News—urgently, widely, and freely.
JOSHUA 8 / PSALM 46 - What about “Holy” War
What’s the Big Deal? • The Divine Command to Joshua/Israelites to Kill the Canaanites • In a world and country full of violence, including religious violence • In a social culture that leaves no room for serious dialogue • In a church culture that often suppresses questions or doubts
**We must Erase the Caricatures In order to Embrace God’s Character (Good) and Plan (Gospel)
Erase the Caricatures I. The Caricature of Canaan and Israel A. Canaan was an innocent, idyllic paradise Actually was a powerful, violent empire (Gen 15:12-16) Attacked Israel while Israel was vulnerable B. Israel was Powerful and Aggressive They were Oppressed and Relatively Weak
II. The Caricature of Holy War A. Holy War is Pervasive in the Bible The phrase “holy war” only found in Joel 3:9 Israel’s attacks were limited in scope and breadth “Drive out” is more common than “kill off” B. Attacked Cities were Filled with Innocent Women/Children Most “cities” in Joshua were Military Outposts and Small C. Thousands involved and Everyone/Everything killed War Rhetoric and numbers often hyperbolic/exaggerated
Embrace God’s Character and Plan 1. God is Patient 2. God is Merciful 3. God is Compassionate to the Widow, Orphan, and Foreigner 4. God is Just—He addresses/eradicates Evil to Protect His Creation 5. God is Consistent—Doesn’t “change” in the New Testament 6. God is Savior—His Suffering Servant ultimately brings Life and Victory!
Psalm 46!!! • He is our Refuge for the Hurting and Fearful • He is the Source of Stability and Peace • He is the Ender of All Wars • He is the Rest for our Souls
“For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.” - Romans 6:23
I. People in General A. Sin Rejects God’s Glory and Ownership B. Sin Incurs the Anger of God 1.Why might we struggle with Achan’s punishment? a. Don’t take sin seriously b. Don’t live in a group culture c. Don’t know the attitude of his confession d. Don’t see from God’s perspective 2. *The God Who Saves is a God of Holiness C. Sin Leads to Death 1. III. What won’t “fix” the problem? A. Ritual Worship (verse 10) B. Ritual Confession (verse 20) IV. Where’s the hope? A. Cross and Resurrection (1 Corinthians 15:54-57) B. Confession and Repentance (2 Corinthians 7:10) C. Cleansing and Reconciliation (1 Corinthians 5)
Response 1. Repent of Sin and Trust in Jesus for Salvation 2. Personal Confession- Have you taken sin seriously? 3. Corporate Confession- Is there sin in our camp? 4. Are we committed to pursuing holiness together for the Glory of God, the Good of Others, and Our Joy?
God, give us the city and the nations, and do it in such a way that only you get the credit for it. -Edgewater Baptist Church, New Orleans
God’s Victory is Certain (vv. 1-2) “The Gospel is not good advice; it’s good news. It’s not spelled DO or DON’T, but DONE.” - JD Greer.
God’s Ways are Surprising -His Methods (vv. 3-16) -His Mercy (vv. 17-25) (We’ll deal with “holy war/destruction” on Nov 12 & 19) -His Messiah (v. 25 / Philippians 2:6-8)
God’s Glory is Expansive (vv. 26-27 / Philippians 2:9-11) ***What might God do in and through Emmaus that people would look and say, “Only He could do that”?
Response 1. UP/Worship = Celebrating His Victory -Faith, Confidence, Joy, Freedom, Hope, Humility -He is the Focus of our Praise 2. IN/Discipleship = Trusting His Ways -Often a slow process -Learning to discern and obey together 3. OUT/Missions = Spreading His Glory -Are we living for God’s glory or our name/fame? -Are we living as if He’s victorious, active, and worthy?
Therefore, Go and Make Disciples of All Nations… 1. Baptizing them in the Name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit (Matthew 28:19b) A. Understanding Circumcision in Joshua 5:2-9 B. UP (Worship) C. Ancient = Same Gospel and Holiness D. Future = New Generations

And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age. (Matt. 28:20b) A. Understanding Divine Encounter in Joshua 5:13-15 B. OUT (Mission) C. Ancient = Same Power and Purpose D. Future = New Opportunities
*Would we be perfectly fine if everything continued ‘as is’? To those younger than you, can you say: “I am committed to future generations who will live with greater dedication and passion than ever before.”
To those older than you, can you say: “I am committed to the Gospel, the Word, and the Church with greater dedication and passion than ever before.”
Big Idea: The God who has been Faithful in the Past will be Faithful in the Future.
How Should We Remember? 1. Meditate on God’s Word (Filter & Foundation) 2. Worship Gathering 3. Ceremonies/Key Moments 4. Gospel Conversations

What are you facing now for which you need to be reminded of God’s faithfulness? 5. How do others see God’s faithfulness and power at work in your life?
Big Idea: The God-Who-Saves is Miraculously Powerful
Joshua 3:5 1. An Expectant/Prepared People Holiness is a Key Theme throughout Joshua • Ark • Priests • Consecrate (Prepare/Set Apart) We can’t truly understand God’s Power apart from Holiness
Response #1- Don’t Neglect Salvation Hebrews 2:1-4 how shall we escape if we neglect such a great salvation? (v. 3a)
Response #2- Celebrate the Joy of Salvation ***May God make us a Holy, Expectant People, who Experience His Miraculous Power through Worship, Discipleship, and Missions!
I. What does this teach us about God? He is Shockingly Merciful Merciful to the outsiders Merciful to the insiders Merciful in harmony with His other characteristics Mercy Forgives (but isn’t passive!) // Grace Gives Mercy says, “I am with you and for you.” Compassionate, Kind, Faithful, Patient II. What does this teach us about people? We Desperately Need God’s Mercy III. What does this teach us about the relationship between God and people? Fear of God’s Judgment/Power Faith in God’s Salvation IV. How should I respond with my head, heart, and hands? Head- Do I believe God is Merciful, Good, and Just? Heart- Does God’s mercy drive my worship of Him and my attitude toward myself/others? *Hands- Mercy from God should make us merciful toward others. How can I proclaim and display mercy,

We exist to Proclaim and Display Jesus Big Idea: God uses a social network to sustain and expand His Kingdom. Key Phrase: Partnerships in the Gospel (Philippians 1:5) *The Gospel (Good News of Jesus) is displayed through a Social Network called the Body of Christ. Christianity is a public and corporate reality (not private and individualistic).
Good Partnerships are: A. Personal- you deal with real people, in real places B. Faithful- you can depend on them C. Humble- you can respect them D. Enlightening- you avoid out-of-sight, out-of-mind - lp.namb.net/subscribe-to-on-mission-today - imbstudents.org - bpnews.net E. Encouraging- you build up F. Reconcilable- you experience restoration G. Diverse- you value one another - okbu.edu/president/convocation/2017-convocation-address H. Prayerful- you labor in prayer I. Emotional- you care deeply J. Not-always-perfect- you face reality K. Reciprocal- you give and take L. Evangelistic- you proclaim and display Jesus’ Grace
The Results: 1. Sustain (Endurance) 2. Expand (Multiplied Impact)
Response -Have you experienced God’s salvation that makes you part of His people/family? -Who are your partners in the Gospel? -How would someone describe you as a partner in the Gospel? -What would someone learn by observing your social network?
Colossians 4:2-6 Monday Morning Prayer “Open a Door, Open my Eyes, Open my Mouth”
“Open a Door” -Devotion to Prayer -Focus on Evangelism (Good News) -Partnerships
“Open my Eyes” -Wise (Watchful) Conduct -Outsiders -Make the most of every opportunity
“Open my Mouth” -Grace -Salt -Answer Each Person
Response 1. Have you understood and trusted in the mystery of Christ—that God has made a way for you to be made right with Him and experience full and eternal life? 2. Will you commit to the “Monday Morning Prayer” for the remainder of 2017? 3. How does God want to change your life or speech to share the Good News of Jesus with the world around you?
Colossians 2:16-23
Sabbath- Biblical Mandate? Church Tradition? Something More? Prescriptions- Gen. 2; Ex. 16; 20, 31; 35, Lev 16; 23; 25; Num. 15; 28; Duet. 5; 15; Neh. 9; 10; 13; Ezek. 20; Amos 8; Matt. 12; Mark 2-3; Luke 6; 13; 14; John 5
+Romans 14:5-6 +Hebrews 4:1 -10
Pattern #1 = Already/Not Yet Pattern #2 = We work from Rest, not to Rest
Principle #1 = Rest/Remember/Refresh Principle #2 = Set something aside to pick it up again *Principle #3 = Gather Regularly for Worship/Community
-What about those strict toward the Sabbath? -What about those less strict?
Response 1. “Today” is the clay of salvation. Raise the white flag; believe completely in Jesus’ power to save and transform you.
How can I control my schedule and embrace both rest an bring glory to God and advance His Kingdom?
What does my use of time/Sabbath communicate to those my beliefs in God?
Colossians 2:16.23
Making Holy Decisions with Christian Freedom 1. Prescriptions- What Scriptures deal directly with my topic? How do these verses fit within the scope of Scripture? 2. Patterns- What is the overall direction of Scripture? How do we see the Bible's story unfolding? 3. Principles- What Gospel lessons do we learn from Scripture, even if the exact topic in Scripture is different from the question I’m addressing?
The Gospel Foundation for Money 1. Salvation is FREE; you don’t buy or earn it 2. Jesus paid your tithe; in Christ, you are free from the law, guilt, sin, and shame 3. We become “rich” in life and salvation, because He became “poor” on our behalf
Tithing- Biblical Mandate? Church Tradition? Something More? 1. Prescriptions- Lev. 27; Numb. 18; Deut. 12; 14; 26; 2 Chron. 31; Neh. 10; 12; 13; Amos 4; Malachi 3; Matt. 23:23; Luke 11:42; 18:12; Hebrews 7:5-9 2. Pattern- “Everything we have is from God; everything we have is for God” 3. Principles- Planned/Purposeful (first-fruit, proportionate, consistent giving); Complete Stewardship; Sacrificial Generosity; Kingdom Investment through and with the Church
Key Passage = 2 Corinthians 926-15
Response 1. Have you received the FREE GIFT of salvation by turning from sin and giving yourself fully to Jesus Christ? 2. Do you recognize your dependence on God and your inter-dependence with other Christians?
Take the next step...Give to the Church as God’s Plan A for His Kingdom. Limit or eliminate debt so you can be radically generous. Invest in what matters so you can care for those in need and extend your influence in the world.
Colossians 2:16-23
Pharisee Danger- Confusing Christian holiness with Victorian or mid-20th century values Prodigal Danger- Confusing Christian freedom with personal pride ***Only Christ brings spiritual power, fulfillment, and victory -So…I can do anything I want? Or not? -Does God care what I eat? What I put on my body?
How do we make decisions about things dealing with the body (food, tattoos, sex, etc.)? 1. Prescriptions- What Scriptures deal directly with my topic? How do these verses fit within the scope of Scripture? 2. Patterns- What is the overall direction of Scripture? How do we see the Bible’s story unfolding? 3. Principles- What Gospel lessons do we learn from Scripture, even if the exact topic in Scripture is different from the question I’m addressing?
1 Corinthians 6:12-20 Other Scriptures to consider= Leviticus 19:28; Mark 7; Romans 14; 1 Corinthians 10:23-33; Ephesians 6:1-4; 1 Peter 2:12; 3:3-4
Key Pattern- “Everything we have is from God; everything we have is for God” Key Principles- Stewardship; Holiness; Weak/Strong Faith; God’s Glory; Evangelism
Response -God, make be a good steward of the body you’ve given me -God, call me to holiness in every aspect of life -God, help me to live for the good of others, not myself -God, use me for Your Glory and Your Kingdom. I am not my own; I was bought with a price. In my body, whether in sickness or health, I want to honor you in every way.
Gospel Core- Participating in the Lord’s Supper -The Cross = Christ gave His body for us -The Resurrection = The body will be made new for Eternal Life

Colossians 2:11-15
We are complete in Christ by Christ alone because… 1) The Old Are Made New (v.11-12) Circumcision was a sign of the covenant made between God and Israel. Genesis 17:10-11 Circumcision was a picture for what God desires spiritually in His people. Deuteronomy 10:16, 30:6. Jeremiah 4:4, Romans 2:28-29, God accomplishes spiritually what physical circumcision never could. He cuts off our violent disposition towards God by violently cutting off Christ. Isaiah 53:1-10, Ephesians 2:13-14 Baptism in v.12: Literal meaning (water emersion) vs. Figurative meaning (to be identified with Christ).
2) The Dead Are Made Alive (v.13) We cannot fully know what it means to be alive with Christ until we fully know what it means to be dead to Him. Ephesians 2:1-5
3) Our Debt Is Canceled (v.13b-14) Romans 3:19-26
4) Our Enemy Is Disarmed, Disgraced, & Defeated (v.15) Colossians 2:10, 1 Peter 5:8
Response: -Have I recognized Jesus as superior and submitted to His authority? -Am I looking to things outside of Christ for my completeness/security in Him? -Do I grow tired of hearing of the work of Jesus Christ?

Wisdom and Home 1. Home is where Wisdom is Made and Matures 2. God created the world as a home in which we would live wisely for and with him…but sin has corrupted life in this home and broken the connection between Heaven and Earth 3. A Future, Perfect Home Awaits when God reconciles Heaven and Earth 4. In the meantime, we live in our homes and in our churches in such a way that others can see God’s Glory and Love
Response -Have I accepted the life God gives through Jesus Christ? -Am I experiencing this life fully according to God’s Wisdom, while I look ahead to the time God will make all things right? -What keeps me from experiencing the wise, full life God intends?

Titus 3:12-15
-On the basis of the Gospel (1:1-3) -Paul invests in and commissions Titus (1:4) -To set things in order (1:5a) -By appointing elders (1:5b) -Who have a good reputation (1:6-8) -Including the ability to instruct and correct (1:9) -Why? False Teachers endangering Church/Families (1:10-16) -In contrast, Titus/Church should be and do Good (2:1-10) -Because of God’s Grace and Salvation (2:11-12) -In Active/Holy Anticipation of Jesus’ Appearing (2:13-14) -Remembering and Living Out the Gospel (2:15-3:8) -Guarding Against Worthless Divisions (3:9-11) -In order to Live Fruitful Lives for God’s Kingdom (3:12-15)
How to W.I.N. (What’s Important Now) 1. Partnerships (3:12-13, 15a) Form Partnerships in the Gospel (3:12, 15a) Practice Hospitality (3:13)
Everything we have is from God Everything we have is for God
Titus 3:9-11
-On the basis of the Gospel (1:1-3) -Paul invests in and commissions Titus (1:4) -To set things in order (1:5a) -By appointing elders (1:5b) -Who have a good reputation (1:6-8) -Including the ability to instruct and correct (1:9) -Why? If…the Church is put in order, If…the Gospel is preached, If…the Gospel is lived out, What could stop the mission? Worthless Divisions!
Guarding Against Worthless Divisions 1. Avoid getting sucked in (Titus 3:9) 2. Reject those causing the trouble (Titus 3:10-11)
How? 1. Know the difference between a worthless division and a Gospel defense 2. Know the difference between a growing disciple and willful troublemaker 3. Know the signs of divisiveness A. Turn inward and stop doing good for others B. Petty arguments, usually over personal preferences C. Forget the Gospel that saved us
Instead…Proclaim and Display Jesus!!!
Titus 2:15-3:8 -On the basis of the Gospel (1:1-3) -Paul invests in and commissions Titus (1:4) -To set things in order (1:5a) -By appointing elders (1:5b) -Who have a good reputation (1:6-8) -Including the ability to instruct and correct (1:9) -Why? What happens after Easter? 1. You're Reminded and Prodded to Keep Going (Titus 2:15; 3:1a, 3:8a)
You Learn the Gospel More Everyday (Titus 3:3-7) More about my Condition without Christ More about God's character More about God's Transforming Work in my Life
You do Good to Display Jesus (Titus 3:1b-2, 8b)
Titus 2:13-14 -On the basis of the Gospel (1:1-3) -Paul invests in and commissions Titus (1:4) -To set things in order (1:5a) -By appointing elders (1:5b) -Who have a good reputation (1:6-8) -Including the ability to instruct and correct (1:9) -Why? Easter Assurance in a World of Doubt Shaky Foundations for Assurance 1. Previous experiences 2. Current emotions 3. Future efforts
Firm Foundations for Assurance 1. Waiting Expectantly in Hope (v.13a) Faith, but not "blind faith" *Look at Romans 8 for more about Hope 2. Worshiping Christ Exclusively (v. 13b-14a) 2A. Our Great God- He alone is worthy 2B. Our Perfect Savior- He alone saves 3. Working Eagerly with the Church (v.14b) Work from Salvation, not for Salvation Emphasis in Titus: Theology leads to Action
Response * Am i currently doubting my salvation? Am I relying on my own experiences, emotions, or efforts? If so, am I ready to repent and trust in Jesus, living in the Hope of Easter? * How is my life being transformed as a result of salvation AND a sign of this salvation? Worship? Church? Eagerness to do good for God's Kingdom, not my own?
Titus 2:11-12
-On the basis of the Gospel (1:1-3) -Paul invests in and commissions Titus (1:4) -To set things in order (1:5a) -By appointing elders (1:5b) -Who have a good reputation (1:6-8) -Including the ability to instruct and correct (1:9) -Why? False Teachers endangering Church/Families (1:10-16) -In contrast, Titus/Church should be and do Good (2:1-10) -Because of God's Grace and Salvation (2:11-12)
The Why Behind the What 1. Grace Appears (Palm Sunday-John 12:12-19) Though Jesus Christ and the Preaching of His Good News *Have I truly seen God's amazing, free grace?
Grace Saves *Have I experienced the power of God's salvation?
Grace Transforms *How is my life being transformed by God's grace? -To what am I saying "No"? -To what am I saying "Yes"?
Titus 2:1-10
-On the basis of the Gospel (1:1-3) -Paul invests in and commissions Titus (1:4) -To set things in order (1:5a) -By appointing elders (1:5b) -Who have a good reputation (1:6-8) -Including the ability to instruct and correct (1:9) -Why? False Teachers endangering Church/Families (1:10-16) -In contrast, Titus/Church should be and do Good (2:1-10)
What’s the Big Idea? Right Doctrine leads to Right Actions
So what? Ordered churches, families, and lives will… 1. Honor Christ (Up) 2. Build up other Christians (In) 3. Display the Gospel to the Community (Out) -Older Men (v. 2) -Older Women (v. 3-4a) -Younger Women (v. 4-5) -Younger Men (v. 6-8) -Bond-Servants (v. 9-10)
Now what? Head -How am I currently learning sound doctrine that leads to good works? Heart -How would I describe my attitude toward those older/younger than me?
Hands -How do non-Christians view Christ/the Gospel based on my life? -Am I committed to taking the Lord’s Supper in reverence to Christ and in unity with those around me?
Titus 1:10-16
-On the basis of the Gospel (1:1-3) -Paul invests in and commissions Titus (1:4) -To set things in order (1:5a) -By appointing elders (1:5b) -Who have a good reputation (1:6-8) -Including the ability to instruct and correct (1:9) -Why? = 1:10-16
Danger of False Teachers to a Gospel-Based Church Danger #1- Do as I say...not as I do
Danger #2- You're missing out...Need more/different knowledge
Danger #3- You haven't done enough...Need to be purified
Recognizing False Teaching + to Scripture (need extra knowledge/revelation) - from Christ (less than divine; or not truly human) x requirements for salvation (other than faith in Christ) / the body of Christ (separatism; only one human leader)
Healthy Christian Life and Church -Trust in God's Word (not seeking new revelation) -Made Pure in Christ (not striving to be more religious) -Receive God's Gifts as Good (not rejecting or abusing these) -Good Deeds based on True Faith (not unproductive)
Titus 1: 5-9

Mark 12:41-44
Religious Power… -Devours the needy and marginalized -Builds up those who already have -Invests in what will pass away
What can we do? A. Guard our hearts against power and oppression B. Look out for and Care for the marginalized/hurting C. Focus on Eternal, not temporary
B. Give yourself fully to Jesus in worship and obedience -Dangerous Tithing- give God 10%; keep the rest -Dangerous Religion- give God Sunday morning; keep the rest -Biblical Giving- give God everything; invest a consistent portion in local church -Biblical Worship- give God everything; invest a consistent portion in local church
C. Account for all your money/resources -Responsibility- Someone will control your money -Budget- Do I know where it’s going now? -Legacy- Do I know where it’s going in the future?
D. Begin giving now- consistently and joyfully E. Build toward additional, sacrificial giving F. Create margin for extra, spontaneous giving

The Foundations of Musical Worship -Beware of Envy -Word AND Spirit -New Covenant
The Purposes of Musical Worship -UP -IN -OUT
The Goal of OUT- All People Know and Worship God Psalm 96:1-3; Revelation 5:9-10; 7:9-10 “Missions exists because worship does not.” -John Piper Here—Near—Far // Corporately & Individually Musical Worship is one of the ways we Proclaim and Display Jesus!
The Plan of OUT- Musical/Corporate Worship is part of Missions 1. Worship displays Jesus in all circumstances Acts 2:46-47; 16:25-31 2. Worship proclaims Jesus in understandable ways 1 Corinthians 14:20-25
Key Question: Is evangelism the purpose of a worship gathering? Goals: Open; Understandable; Convicting
How? -Invite Others & Practice Hospitality -Set Aside Selfishness/Preferences -Worship Wholeheartedly & Pray for Transformation -Follow up by sharing the Gospel personally
Response -Are you experiencing conviction of sin and searching for hope and forgiveness? -Are you worshipping here and throughout the week in such a way that others would be drawn to the Good News of Jesus? -Are we willing as a church to be mature and unselfish in order to make the Good News of Jesus as open and understandable to people as possible?
Hebrews 10:24-25; Ephesians 5:18-21
The Foundations of Musical Worship -Beware of Envy -Word AND Spirit -New Covenant
The Purposes of Musical Worship -UP -IN -OUT
Corporate (Group), Musical Worship draws us together and propels our spiritual growth.
What does corporate worship provide? (Hebrews 10:24-25)
Ideas: -Remember some of the most important worship happens before 10:30 and after 11:45 -Greet one another and Sit close to one another -Minister to the people in your area (help, support, share) -Be Engaged -Mix/Match seating and groups from time to time
How does corporate musical worship motivate/encourage us? (Ephesians 5:18-21; also, Colossians 3:15-17)
Response: -Have I experienced the Good News of Jesus’ forgiveness and salvation in my life?
-Has this Good News transformed my life so that I motivate and encourage others to follow Jesus?
-How can corporate, musical worship draw me closer to other Christians and empower my spiritual growth?
Exodus 15; Revelation 15
Previous 3 Weeks: The Foundations of Musical Worship -Beware of Envy -Word AND Spirit -New Covenant
Next 3 Weeks: The Purposes of Musical Worship -UP -IN -OUT
Question #1: If worship is "always" and "everywhere," why do we gather regularly as a church? 1. God has created and rescued a People, not just individuals. 2. Jesus died for the Church (Ephesians 5:25-27). 3. We are prone to forget and wander. 4. Scripture commands/models it.
Question #2: If worship includes all of our actions, why do we highlight music/singing? 1. Musical worship engages our emotions/heart 2. Musical worship engages our memory/mind 3. Musical worship engages our bodies/participation 4. Musical worship is a key way God’s people respond UP to Him “Worship is our response to who God is and what He has done.” — adapted from Chris Tomlin, The Air I Breathe
EXODUS 15 We gather and sing... 1. In Response to God's Creation 2. In Response to God's Character 3. In Response to God's Salvation
Saved People Sing -Past ("old" songs); Present ("new" songs) -Future/Eternal Salvation ‘UP Worship’ focuses us above/beyond our circumstances, while reminding us to trust in God’s Victory and Love
Salvation- God created us to live for Him in His world. In our rebellion against God, we are separated from Him and we are dead in our sin. Jesus Christ defeated sin and death through His life, cross, and resurrection. When we turn away from our sinful rebellion against God and look to Jesus, we are rescued and given true, eternal life.
Romans 12:1-2; Hebrews 8-10, 13:15-16
New Covenant A. We no longer live under God’s agreement with His people through Moses (Ceremonial/Civil Laws, Temple Worship/Sacrifices, Circumcision, Food Laws, Sabbath) B. Jesus fulfilled that Agreement by becoming the Perfect Priest, Sacrifice, Temple, and Law Keeper C. Through Jesus, we are made right with God and enabled to live out God’s purpose for His creation.
New Covenant Worship A. The God who is Worshipped doesn’t change, but Worship is Focused on Jesus B. Worshippers continue to worship wholeheartedly, individually and in groups, but the Language and Actions of worship are used in new ways C. “Place,” “Time,” and “Actions” of Worship are Extended/Changed
New Covenant Worship Music A. The Old Testament isn’t Our Blueprint for Corporate Worship B. Reinforces the Danger of Performance vs. Participation C. Our Words must match our Actions “We exist to Proclaim and Display Jesus”
-Do I live under the freedom and hope that Jesus has completely taken care of sin and made me right with God? -Does this salvation drive me to worship God everyday, in everything I do? -Do I celebrate this salvation by gathering with other Christians?

Dry and Dead apart from God’s Word and Spirit (Ephesians 2:1-10)
God gives Life through His Word and Spirit (Gen. 1:1-2; Luke 4:18; John 4:23-24; Acts 1:15-16; 1 Cor. 2:4-5)
Danger #1- Word without Spirit Danger #2- Spirit without Word
What does this have to do with church music in the 21st century? Everything! A. Singing must be based on God’s Word B. Singing must be empowered by God’s Spirit C. Singing and Preaching aren’t separate/competing parts of “Worship”
UP = Know and Worship Him -Am I “dry” because I’ve been rejecting God’s Word and Spirit? -Do God’s Word and Spirit empower me to focus my life on Him?
IN = Be Transformed as part of His People -Is my life being changed through God’s Word and Spirit? -Am I connected with a group of people committed to Word and Spirit?
OUT = Make His Greatness Known to All People -Do I make known God’s Word and Spirit to those around me? -Do I trust God’s Word and Spirit to transform a person’s life?
Why is envy such a big deal? 1. Poisons and destroys your life (Proverbs 14:30; John 10:10) “When we can’t see God’s goodness for others, we can’t see it for us either.” - Ed Litton 2. Kills relationships (1 Samuel 18:7-9; Galatians 5:19-21; 1 Peter 2:1; Titus 3:3; 1 Timothy 6:4) “We don’t just want what someone else has, we don’t want them to have it either.” - Ed Litton 3. Can lead us to meaningless activity (Ecclesiastes 4:4; 12:13) 4. Reveals a distrust of God’s love (Genesis 30:1-6; Psalm 37:1-5; Psalm 73; Proverbs 3:31-32; 23:17-18; 24:1-2; 24:17-20; Matthew 6:33) 5. Can hinder the spread of the Gospel (Philippians 1:15-18)
How do we recognize envy? 1. Am I obeying Romans 12:15 (Rejoice with those who rejoice; mourn with those who mourn)? -How do I respond when something goes well for someone? -How do I respond when something goes badly for someone? 2. How does my body feel (hot, tired, depressed, etc)? 3. Am I becoming combative or dismissive toward someone?
How do we fight envy? 1. Establish Our Identity in Christ (Galatians 2:20) 2. Worship/Give Thanks to God (Colossians 3:1-3) 3. Love/Appreciate/Know others 4. Follow Jesus and fulfill His mission (Matthew 28:19-20)

"Most people want Jesus as a consultant rather than a king and he does not come that way.” -Tim Keller
Response “I believe Jesus did what I could never do for myself. He has saved me, and I want to trust in Him and worship Him for the first time.”
“I believe in Jesus but I’ve been treating Him as a consultant rather than a king. I want to live fully for Him and I need to take the next steps in my Christian faith—baptism, gathering with a church for worship, Bible reading, living a transformed life.”
Proverbs 30:1-14; Luke 1:46-55

1 Peter 1:22-25
A RESCUED PERSON IS : -Able to identify what is Worthy (vertical; last week) -Able to freely love others and do good deeds (horizontal)
One Command 1. Love one another fervently (John 13:34-35; 1 John 4:20-21) Fervently = earnestly; effort AND endurance
Two Supports 1. Purified by Obedience to the Truth (1 Peter 1:2; John 17:17; Matthew 28:19-20) 2. Born Again by the Word of God (1 Peter 1:3; John 3; 1 Corinthians 15:42; Daniel 6:26-27)
One Caution 1. Love (and Faith and Words) without Action is dead Titus 2:14- Christ Jesus…gave Himself for us to redeem us from every lawless deed, and to purify for Himself a people for His own possession, zealous for good deeds. (Hebrews 10:24-25)
Rescued people who are purified by obedience to the truth and born again through the power of God’s Word will be generous with love and zealous for good deeds.
Two Suggestions 1. Practice saying, “I love you, and…”, not, “I love you, but…” Ephesians 4:15- speaking the truth in love, we will grow to become in every respect the mature body of him who is the head, that is, Christ. 2. Learn to say, “Everything we have is from God; everything we have is for God.”
1 Peter 1:17-25
One Command 1. Live in Fear (Reverent Worship)
Two Supports 1. God’s Character- Father and Judge 2. God’s Actions- Rescue/Redemption From worthless ways of life By the worthy sacrifice of Jesus Precious Permanent
One Caution 1. Counting something as Worthy that is actually worthless Two Strategies 1. Learn to say, “This is a good gift, but a terrible god” 2. Move from ‘God’ as a priority in life to Jesus as Lord of your life
Response -Are my faith and hope completely in the precious and permanent sacrifice that God provided for me through Jesus Christ? Do I worship the Worthy or the worthless?
-What is one good gift in my life that I’m most likely to treat as a god? -Ask yourself: What do I truly fear losing? -Ask someone else: What do you see me fearing or valuing more than God?
Acts 17:16-34 Jesus' Resurrection has Power…
To Perplex (v. 18; also John 11:25-28) A. Perplexed the Gentiles, because it didn’t fit their ideas of body and soul B. Perplexed the Jews, because they expected it only at the end of history

Untangling Verse 30 -Ignorance (Acts 3:17-21; 13:26-27 14:15-18; Rom. 1:18-32; Eph. 4:17-24; 1 Pet. 1:13-21) =Not merely lack of knowledge, but rejection of God’s character and will as made known through creation, conscience, and covenant; time before the mystery of Christ was revealed
-Overlooked (Rom. 3:21-25; 16:25; Gal. 4:4; Eph. 3:4-6; Col. 1:26) =God did not bring immediate judgment; allowed time of ignorance to continue as His perfect plan for redemption through Jesus unfolded
Understanding Verses 30-31 1. God will Judge the World in Righteousness through Jesus (Daniel 7:13-14; John 3:16-19; John 5:22-24; Romans 2:1-5) -Judgment of Sin (Idolatry; Rebellion against God and His Design) -Brokenness, Death, and Eternal Separation from God -Judgment is Certain and Righteous 2. How does God’s Design (Creation) impact our lives? 1. God’s Design (Creation) focuses us UP in worship So we learn to Trust Him as God Because otherwise we give our lives to lesser things -Engage people on the question of worship/life purpose
God’s Design (Creation) shapes us IN through discipleship So we learn to Give Ourselves fully to His Way of Life Because otherwise we live in sin apart from true life -Engage people on how worship shapes our life choices
God’s Design (Creation) sends us OUT on mission So we learn to find Joy in Pursuing His Will Because otherwise we chase after meaningless pursuits -Engage people on what we’re aiming for in the future

Do i understand and celebrate the Good News of Jesus Christ? This week, how can I engage my culture with the Good News?
Psalm 51: 1-19
David is convinced that God’s mercy is his only hope. (v.1-2)
How has he become convinced? (v.3-6) David has a keen awareness of his sin and more importantly who his sin has offended. (v.3-4) In sinning against the Lord David knows he deserves God’s judgment and it would be fair of God to condemn him forever. (v.4) David knows that his sins aren’t the only problem, but are symptoms of a greater problem…his sinfulness. (v.5-6)
God’s mercy makes the impossible possible. (v.7-12)
Psalm 51 Gospel Observations #1 This isn’t so much a Psalm about David finding the mercy of God but about the mercy of God finding David. (Psalm 32:1-5) #2 David’s sins were not swept under a rug to be left unpunished. (Romans 3:21-26)
God’s mercy is not a dead end. (v.13-19) Those blessed with the mercy of God are especially positioned to share God’s mercy with others (v.13). Those blessed with the mercy of God understand the need to boast in God alone and worship Him only. (v.14-15). Those blessed with the mercy of God fight to resist the temptation to improve upon the mercy of God with good deeds, religious activity, or the like. (v.16-17). Those blessed with the mercy of God have a renewed concern for the people of God. (v.18-19).
Revelation 3:14-21
The Continuing Witness of the Church: “Jesus is Enough” -Jesus as the Faithful/True Witness -Laodicean Church as the Lukewarm/Useless Witness What makes us lukewarm? 1. Think we’re great when we’re actually wretched and miserable So we need to look to Jesus as the source of truth 2. Think we’re rich when we’re actually poor So we need to look to Jesus for true wealth 3. Think we’re clothed when we’re actually naked So we need to look to Jesus for white garments 4. Think we’re able to see when we’re actually blind So we need to look to Jesus for eye salve
What’s the solution? 1. Recognize the love of Jesus’ correction and discipline 2. Become Zealous and Repent
What’s the result? 1. Fellowship with Jesus and His Church 2. Sharing in His Eternal Glory and Kingdom (when worldly riches and power will do no good)

Revelation 1: 9-20 Revelation is a Competition for True Worship Will we worship… the One True Eternal God--Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, or the Temporary Comforts/Circumstances of this World?
Worship God, not angels (Rev. 22:8-9) -no created being is worthy of worship
Worship God, not idols (Babylon; Rev. 17-18 vs. 21-22) -don’t allow something of this world, no matter how pleasurable, profitable, or powerful to control your life
Worship God, not Rome/Caesar (Rev. 1:9-11) -no human institution can bring true security or salvation
Revelation is a Call to Active Worship (UP) Am I proclaiming (words) and displaying (actions) Jesus? Do people recognize this in my life as a contrast to the world?
Worship Personally (Romans 10:9-10)
Worship Corporately (Hebrews 10:23-25)
Revelation 1: 1-8 Understanding the Good News What? Revelation (singular!) of Jesus Christ The Gospel Remixed and Climaxed
Who/When/Where? Primarily- Christians in 1st Century Asia Minor Including- Christians at all time in all places Revelation given to Servants, not Speculators
How? Letter- addressing an actual situation Prophecy- speaking into a situation, not just beyond it Revelation/Apocalypse- making sense of the situation
Why? To sustain the people in the midst of hardships/persecution Don’t Give Up; Don’t Give In
We don’t need a key to unlock Revelation. Revelation is the key to unlocking faith in and obedience to Jesus.
Revelation is the Ultimate Good News 1. The Good News of Jesus’ Victory (v. 1, 5; John 20:30-31) Call to Saving Faith- Have I trusted in Jesus for salvation?
The Good News of Jesus’ Message and Work (v. 2) Call to Active Faith- Do I proclaim and display Jesus?
The Good News of Jesus’ Blessings (v. 3; Heb. 12:1-2) Call to Joyful Faith- Do I have life abundant and free?
1 Thessalonians 5:1-11
-Signs of Darkness Asleep [vv. 6-7] Drunk [vv. 6-7] False Security [v. 3]
-Darkness Leads to Destruction [vv. 3, 9]
EASTER IS THE CELEBRATION OF LIGHT DEFEATING DARKNESS THROUGH THE DEATH AND RESURRECTION OF JESUS
-Signs of Light Salvation through Jesus Christ [v. 9-10] Battle against Loving Darkness rather than Light [v. 8] *Expose yourself to Light (Bible; Church) Shine Light into a Dark World [vv. 8, 11]
Response Am I living in darkness, or am I prepared to stand before the Lord because of trusting in the death and resurrection of Jesus?
If I’m still uncertain about needing to be prepared for the Day of the Lord, what are my main objections/questions?
If I’ve experienced the light of Jesus’ salvation, am I living to show that light to others?
1 Thessalonians 4:9-18
Sources of Encouragement 1. Grief and Hope can go together (v. 13) 2. Jesus’ Resurrection (v. 14) 3. Jesus’ Return/Coming (vv. 15-16a) 4. We will Experience Jesus’ Return Together (vv. 16b-17a) 5. We will Be with the Lord Forever (v. 17b)
Results of Encouragement 1. Set Free to Trust God (v. 18) -No need to fear death -No need to doubt God’s plan -No need to live without hope
*Do I trust in God’s defeat of death through Jesus Christ?
*Do I live in Christ’s victory by loving and caring for others?
What our world desperately needs in a time of fear-based prophecy schemes and self-centered profit strategies are people set free to love and live freely for the good of others, without fear of death and with living hope for today and tomorrow.
1 Thessalonians 4:1
Danger of Doing More -Trying to impress God or others -Appeal of the New and Next -Grow Tired or Just Become Busy
Danger of Not Doing More -The stories we tell are only about the past -White fence post syndrome -We naturally coast and drift; God calls us to strive. Philippians 3:12-16
So, What do we mean by More? -Pursue Faith, Love, and Holiness -Proclaim and Display Jesus to a broken and hurting world
John 14:12- “Truly, truly, I say to you, whoever believes in me will also do the works that I do; and greater works than these will he do, because I am going to the Father.
Where do we go from here? -We do the little things well…love, faith, and holiness in action -We celebrate God’s faithfulness and power -We pay off the building -We trust one another as we find our way into this new season of ministry -We develop a long-range planning and prayer process -We ask God to do more in us and through us than ever before
1 Thessalonians 2:17-3:10
-The Gospel (Good News of Jesus) -Gospel Prayer that Destroys Cynicism -Integrating Our Soul with Our Life Roles -Being God's People for God's Purposes -Proclaim Jesus: Method and Message Matter -Display Jesus: Invest and Influence -God's Word
God Works IN Our Lives to... Strengthen Us in Times of Trouble Concern- Temptation leading to Sin "Lead us not into temptation, but Deliver us from the Evil One." -Matthew 6:13
God Works THROUGH Our Lives... Spread the Gospel in Times of Trouble Concern- Labor in Vain "I do not ask that you take them out of the world, but that you keep them from the evil one... As you sent me into the world, so I have sent them into the world." John 17:15, 18
Two Things that crack the foundation of God's Word... 1. Internal Distrust in the Power of God's Word. 2. External Attacks on the Victory of God's Word
Response A. We receive the Good News of Jesus as the Powerful, Life-changing Word of God. -Read God's Word in Light of Jesus -Obey God's Word by displaying Jesus -Share God's Word by proclaiming Jesus
B. We expect opposition to the victory and Spread of God's Word
C. We respond in Love, Good Deeds, and Trust in God's Ultimate Judgment and Victory.
Romans 5:8-10- God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. Since, therefore, we have now been justified by his blood, much more shall we be saved by him from the wrath of God. For if while we were enemies we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more, now that we are reconciled, shall we be saved by his life.
1 Thessalonians 2:7-12 Display Jesus by Investing (2:7-10), Influencing (2:9-12), For Eternal Purposes (2:12).
Why do we not invest and influence with eternal purpose? Busy, Private, Perceived Inefficiency, Uncertain about our own lives. How do we invest and influence with eternal purpose? Allow others to invest in and influence us, Work together, Say no in order to Say Yes, Take long-term view and remember seasons of life, Don't lose focus of the message and the goal.
1 Thessalonians 1:4-10 Gospel of God. Experienced Gospel Themselves. Entrusted with Gospel by God.
Method: Confidence not cowardice Authentic Appeal, not deceit, impurity, or craftiness Please God, not man Server others, not flattery, greed, or personal glory
1 Thessalonians 1:4-10 God's People- Family, loved, Chosen.
Dealing with Difficult Subjects- Build side rails and bridges. Guard against the "dangerous opposite." Be humble. Be extremely careful about choosing up sides.
God's Purpose- Chosen, to Worship, to be conformed to Christ, To make the Gospel known.
Display (Action)- Powered Convictions of the Holy Spirit Joy in affliction
Proclaim (Message) Turn from idols Serve Living and True God Wait for Christ's coming
1 Thessalonians 1:3 Soul- Faith, Love, Hope 1 Thessalonians 5:8; 1 Corinthians 13:13 Internal, Heart, Mind, Will
Role- Work, Labor, Endurance Revelation 2:2; Philippians 1:6; Ephesians 2:10 External, Job, Volunteer, Household Theology of Work 1) Work is part of God's Kingdom, from Creation to Eternity 2) Work is Worship (giving glory and thanks to God) *Work is a Great Gift, and a terrible god 3) Work is Discipleship (following Jesus) 4) Work is Missional (sharing faith, love, and hope with others)
We tend to emphasize one or the other -'False battle' between James 2:18 and Galatians 2:16 -We hide an unhealthy soul behind our role -We use our soul as an excuse for having no role
They should work together, almost as a cycle -There is no true Christian work, labor, and endurance without a healthy soul -There is no true Christian faith, love, and hope without an active role
Application: 1) Use Soul and Role as a Check-Up for your life, family, team, and church. 2) Employed- be excellent, present, and ready; learn to be specific in applying faith, love, and hope 3) Students- soul development and active faith; live for more than an easy job and early retirement 4) Moms- home as a place of production and character development 5) Unable to Work (disabled/unemployed)- enduring hope is powerful; what unseen roles allow you to impact others with faith, love, and hope? 6) Retirees- guard your heart against finding worth and identity only in your previous roles; what roles do you have now?
1 Thessalonians 1:1-2
Gospel Prayer -Based on God’s Character and Actions (1:1) -Belief in God’s Word (1:1; 2:13) -Thankful (1:2; 5:18) -Always (1:2; 5:16-17) -Everyone (1:2)
Cynicism is our Greatest Threat to Gospel Prayer -Cynicism = doubt, skepticism, “it doesn’t really matter” -Cynicism comes from: misunderstanding of the Gospel, unmet expectations, rationalism, positivity -Cynicism steals child-like faith and leads to sarcasm, bitterness, withdrawal
Application -Pray God's Word -Don’t separate prayer from action/from the rest of your life -Pray with others, especially those in other life stages -Make prayer the beginning and end of everything you do -Pray for Eternity
(Relationship between Prayer and Cynicism is addressed in Paul Miller, “A Praying Life”)
Luke 1:26-38,46-55
Foundational Pattern (vv. 26-38, 46) = God Acts, We Respond- -Reverse the Pattern- Prosperity Gospel -Eliminate the First Part- Moralism/Being Good -Eliminate the Second Part- Dead Faith
Subversive Pattern (vv. 47-55) = Through the Humble, For the Needy- -Mary was Afflicted/Needy - She represented all of Israel in this way -God had Promised Salvation and Blessings for His People -Jesus’ Coming meant His Followers would Subvert the Values of the World by Showing Mercy and Love to those in Need
Response- -Have I responded to God by trusting in His gift of Life and Salvation through Jesus and worshiping Him completely? -How is God working through me and those around me as we humble ourselves and allow Him to use us to minister to those in need? -How will Emmaus respond to meet the needs of vulnerable children and families in need of healing and the hope of the Gospel?
Creation- Responsive Reading- Psalm 136:1-9, 23-26
Fall- Genesis 3:1-7; Ephesians 2:1-3
Grace and Mercy- Genesis 12:1-3; Isaiah 30:18; Ephesians 2:4-10
Confession and Repentance- Isaiah 6:1-6
Celebration of Salvation- John 3:16; Romans 10:9-10
Church- Acts 17:1-15
The Gospel is... The Source of our Gathering (vv. 1-4 The Reason for Opposition (vv. 5-9) The Foundation for our Future (vv. 10-15)
Psalm 3-4
Rest and Salvation, now and forever Rest is Christological (based on who Jesus is and what He has done) It's a dangerous lie to say that if we just work hard enough, we'll be able to reach the point of rest. Hebrews 3:7-4:10; Ephesians 2:8-9
Rest and Sanctification, now and forever Sanctification- make holy; separated from sin, dedicated to God Rest is a purposefully good gift from our loving and wise Creator and Father. “Sleep is a daily reminder from God that we are not God.” -John Piper “I have often thought that if the Devil can't make a man bad, he'll make him busy.” -Kenny Luck Hebrews 4:11-13; Ephesians 2:10
Response -Have you experienced the rest and peace that come from trusting in the Salvation provided by Jesus Christ? -Are you working and living each day from a foundation of rest in the God who created you for His glory, the good of others, and your joy? -What steps do you need to take this season to rest in Christ?
Psalm 1:2
What?- Law- the fullness of God’s Character and Will Delight/Meditate Engaging versus Emptying Internalize in order to Externalize
Why?- Loving- John 10:3-4 True- Psalm 33:4; John 17:17 Thinking biblically doesn’t mean every thought is about the Bible; it means every thought is shaped by the Bible. Powerful- Hebrews 4:12 Hopeful- Romans 15:4 Eternal- Isaiah 40:8; 1 Peter 1:22-25 The good things of this world make great gifts but terrible gods
How?- Individually: Ingest It- Reading and Listening to God’s Word Digest It- Praying and Practicing God’s Word
Corporately:- Delight in the Word more than Study of the Word Delight with those who are Delighted for the first time or in a fresh way
