In my podcast presentation, I will be breaking down the definition of a Black female protagonist, while using multiple stories from Kabu Kabu that introduce Black femininity. I will give insight on the importance of having a Black female protagonist centered story, that is written by a Black female author. Nnedi Okorafor a Black/Nigerian woman and the author of Kabu Kabu cleverly ties in many aspects of Black womanhood and resilience. To support Okorafor work I will be using some of the films we watched in class, to expand more on the topic of Black female protagonists. In the book, Kabu Kabu there are extensive differences and similarities amongst Black female protagonists. In thought, I would like to debunk the stereotypes and sexist interpretations of how a Black female protagonist should be. In light, I will be shifting the narrative, to show the complexity and versailities of Black female protagonists in artwork. Focus points of my podcast presentation shall include but is not limited to, topics around hair ‘Dada locs’, the term meaning hair that is similar to locs, was mentioned throughout Okorafor collection of stories many times. I would like to also touch on the topics of Black womanhood, polygamy, Black woman and their relationships, whether platonic or romantic, and reclaiming the defenition of a strong Black women. Nnedi Okorafor is unique in the way she introduces ‘Black Girl Magic’. Black Girl Magic in modern terms means the very versatility of Black women and their style. In Okorafor collection of stories, many of the Black female protagonists inherit some sort of ‘magical power’, which can be translated to the idea of Black women being so powerful they possess powers. In my podcast presentation, I will go over the very unique and futuristic ways Okorafor has presented the Black female protagonist in her book.
