Greg Steele returns to the Out of Focus podcast so that we could check back in after our last episode together aged very poorly. In our last episode, we talked about the Grand Opening of Greg's law firm, which happened to be a week before the lockdowns began. Greg gives us a summary of the aftermath of the sudden shutdown of the country, and where he stands now (which is good by the way). We also discuss what our place is during a time of unrest, and how we are using social media during all this.

Great new episode for you this week! The incredibly talented Emily Boyd drops in via Zoom to talk about her artwork, the process, and daily discipline. We discuss social media and how to post around our particular process, in Emily’s case, her paintings take a lot of time and doesn’t necessarily fit the “feed the beast” social media posting strategy that we are often recommended to promote ourselves with.

Here's a weird one for ya! Past guest, Tim Rountree, wanted to interview me on my own podcast. It's really kind of a document of how I got here and what I'm doing now. Some of this stuff I haven't talked about in a long time, but I think it was a good exercise overall. Not only that, but I liked the perspective of sitting in the guest seat, so I got a good view of how to enhance my guest's experience. Hopefully, an episode like this makes me a better podcaster!

What is Failure? Here’s one of these “diary entry” episodes where I dissect why it can be easy to feel like a failure sometimes, and how it’s really a good thing to undergo at the end of the day. I also share my current beefs with the current preset “orange and white” color trends and give you some sneak peeks for what’s to come with the podcast! Thanks for listening!

Hey guys! In this week's episode, I talked to Andrew Bailes about his experience singing background for Willie Nelson and other bands, and then moving to China. It was an accidental interview (the best kind), because this episode was very unplanned, but that's half the fun! If anything, this episode of the podcast is a document of Andrew and I meeting, which is pretty neat. This is a two part episode, with the second being more with Tim who teaches me about hunting.
I came with the gear to record two people, so I had to switch to a different microphone mode on my recorder, so the audio quality gets iffy at some points, but I think it turned out pretty great for us being outside on Tim's porch.
Stay tuned for Part II which will be released later!

Hey guys! Sorry for missing last week's show! Have a brand new guest coming at you later this week!
In today's episode, I talk about the story of my photography career and discuss the recently released article about "Photographer" Being One of the Worst Jobs in the US right now by the numbers. You can read the article here:
https://petapixel.com/2019/04/22/photographer-named-one-of-the-25-worst-jobs-in-the-us/
I have a lot of questions about the data on this study and I don't believe it's entirely inclusive of the whole industry, but I do believe there's a lot of accuracy in it.
I give a few examples of pros who are leaving the photography world due to it's decline, notably Jeremy Cowart. I read his biography last week and you should too, check it out here:
https://www.amazon.com/Im-Possible-Jumping-Discovering-Purpose/dp/0785223746/ref=sr_1_1?crid=MYBR6TOMO64F&keywords=im+possible+by+jeremy+cowart&qid=1556035441&s=gateway&sprefix=im+possib%2Caps%2C139&sr=8-1

Short one this week! I've had a bunch of stuff going on, but I wrote a blog about how the world of "wedding photography blogging" I could talk about this topic all day, but you can read the post here: https://www.willmalone.com/blog/2019/4/9/blogging-its-just-what-you-do
I have a bunch of stuff I want to fix in the post, but it's out there, so I'll do a follow up later.
Basically, I just push back at the idea that people need to feel pressure to blog photo sets just because other photographers do it. You do you.

In this week's episode of Out of Focus, we talk about the dark hand of Facebook and the power it has over our businesses as seen by the blackout last week. I talk to Greg Steele, a lawyer in South Carolina about what it is that we can even do about the power that Google, Facebook, and Amazon have over all information. Spoiler: Probably nothing.
Greg also brings us insights from the world of Law Firm Advertising, a world known for cheesy commercials. Now that people are watching TV less and less, where do lawyer ads go from here?
