Twins Cynthia Hennon Marino and Stacy Hennon Stone host a weekly podcast talking to the people behind the curtains. Take a trip back stage to learn what it takes to put on a production: design process, music study and execution, paperwork, meetings, management, unions, and all the excitement backstage that the audience doesn’t get to see. Enjoy the show!
Marcus Shields grew up with a piano playing mother and sheet music always around. In High School choir a friend said "this is easy, you should try opera, that's the hard one!" So of course Marcus got into opera and fell in love with it! In grad school, he realized he was good, but not THAT good, but he could help teach his fellow students how to stand, and act and create a character. He believes there is no clear path to directing, but he is the creator of an artistic idea. Marcus has directed operas for every major company in America. He is a cofounder of Ossia Production Company. And a founding member of Catapult Opera.

Tina Scariano can do anything, because she never lets anything stand in her way. Want to be an actress? Done! Can you stage manage a show? Sure! How about being a Managing Director for an Off-Broadway Theatre company named Out of the Box Theatrics? Why not. Start a podcast with a friend called "Obsessed with the Best", teach yourself guitar and do a one woman show, become a certified makeup artist? Of course! She believes there is no excuse not to try something new and follow your dreams. Even if those dreams change over time.

Spencer Richardson thought he wanted to be a movie director when he grew up. Then in high school he took a stagecraft class and realized set design was much more his style! Around that same time he took a trip to Disneyland and learned about Imagineers. Today he has achieved his goal and is an Imagineer Show designer working on the Spider-Man attraction for the Disney's California Adventure Avenger Campus! When not working for the mouse, you can find him at the Long Beach Playhouse designing anything they will give him.

Stephen Olear picked up the accordion at the age of 7 and was winning stage championships in high school! His parents agreed he could go to college for a music degree, if he agreed to do something else, so he got his graduate degree at law school. That is how he moved from NJ to CA and started working as an usher at the Music Center. Fast forward a few years, Steven is still working in law with the Small Business Administration, is in his 38th year and now the Usher Manager at the Music Center, as well as the Musical Director and Volunteer coordinator at the Long Beach Playhouse!

Cindy and Kate met at the University of Cincinnati College Conservatory of Music in 2006 where Kate received her BFM in theatre design and production with an emphasis in Sound Design. Even though in high school her teachers told her that she couldn't be on Broadway because they don't let women in the union, and CCM would be too hard for her. Little did they know that only months after graduating CCM, she would be on a national tour as the Audio 2 for "Spring Awakening" and is now on Broadway with "SiIX"!

By the age of 5, Antonia had decided she wanted to do theatre! Growing up in Wales, she had plenty of exposure to the arts and local theatres. Always being eager to learn more and her willingness to say yes quickly got her Equity card, a job in opera, the touring circuit and into the academic realm. She has worked all over England, Hong Kong, and Florida! Her dedication to Stage Management and education led her, with the help of her husband, to start the Bamboo Manager Project to provide an online opportunity for stage managers of all backgrounds.

Cindy and Stacy met Katurah when they all first worked at Opera Santa Barbara on Madame Butterfly in 2012. Keturah's early career was as a contemporary and classical dancer, working mostly with operas later. It is said that dancers have two deaths; once when their dance career is over, and once at the end of their life. After dancing in and falling in love with Philip Glass' Akhnaten, she decided she would move into directing and has become a huge champion of new American Operas.

As a teenager, Stuart went into "The City" to watch a random Broadway show that a friend had a 2 for 1 ticket to. They get there only to find the show has been canceled, so they go next door and watch the original production of..."Grease!" Stuart's life long love for musicals has began. In college he took over hosting a 3 hour Broadway show, probably because he was constantly calling in to request songs. It's now been... a few years... and he still has a radio show called Sounds of Broadway that plays Broadway, Off-Broadway, and the West End, he is the president of the Connecticut Critics Circle, a member of the Outer Critics Circle, and the American Theatre Critics Association.

In episode 86 we talked to Jacob and Suzanne Willett about how Silver Glass Productions integrated science and movement into performance pieces. This week we learn how they switched gears during the pandemic to capture the dramatic change in the sounds of NYC and presented the pieces through Zoom. Some scenes recorded, and other scenes done live.

What happens when a kid is obsessed with spies and hackers, and all she wants to do when she grows up is wear black, a headset, and a walkie talkie? She joins the back stage world of theatre! Megan Lovegren started in Elementary school and has never stopped. Meeting Stacy Hennon Stone, Sean Gray (ep. 84), Madison Mooney (ep. 30) and Jacquelin Wingett (ep. 15) at the Long Beach Playhouse while getting volunteer hours (and more!) in High School. She is now in Las Vegas running different lighting tracks for Zumanity by Cirque du Soleil! There is no telling where she will go from there! Like so many people, Cris Eli Blak didn't know theatre was a career outside of school. In college he majored in Liberal Studies to get the broadest education and to help understand the widest range of human experience. He started playwriting by copying his idols such as Walt Disney, Shakespeare, August Wilson and Stephen Adly Guirgis. But it did not feel right. That is when he learned that no one could tell your story like you, and the best way to do it, is to just do it.

Marina Dardani is a stage manager born and raised in Italy, the nation that is the holder of the history of opera. With that comes a huge responsibility to keep that history and its music and traditions alive. That does not mean the technical training has kept up with the field. For example, Marina had to get a degree in music, to become a stage manager.

Alessio Picco has worked in Italy (where he was born and raised), in Birmingham England, in Saudi Arabia and now in Dubai. He believes that being happy is the most important thing in life. If you are happy with your job an career, then you can deal with a lot more in life. We don't think Cindy and Stacy have laughed this much in a long time!

Is there a defining moment in your life that made you realize that you wanted to work in theatre forever? For John O'Neil Theatre, it was the moment a young girl fell in love with the Tin Man in Wizard of Oz and ran up to him after the show to give him the biggest hug. Life changing. Kyoko Dana is an English Teacher in the Montgomery County Public School system, but we think she mostly uses that as a ruse to convince students to join the theatre!! (Note, if you ask students to paint Star Wars themed back drops and have Lightsaber battles onstage, you may get more participants!). Having a few young assistant lighting designers is a plus as well.

Today the Managing Director of Long Wharf Theatre, Kit Ingui, joins us to discuss why interpersonal relationships are essential in theatre, learning that "the buck stops with her" (and Jacob Padron) and how they are using this time of uncertainty to not only strengthen their relationships with the regional theaters in CT, but to also build new relationships with all arts organizations. We are all in the same boat, so lets share the oars and lifejackets!

After 13 years working in professional theatre, Stacy Hennon Stone changed gears a little and joined a fellow University of Redlands friend, Alejandra Gomez, in the Entertainment Event Industry. Now she worked on multiple events at the same time, and has seen the sun set and rise, in the same event, on Hollywood Blvd. The Red Carpet is not that different from Theatre! Just more time outside.

Erin Maureen Koster parents met doing theatre in college, and though they did not pursue it as a career, Erin always knew that is what she wanted. In 2004 she earned her Masters Degree from Columbia Univeristy and in 2007 earned her Actors' Equity Association card, and never left NYC! She has done everything from off-Broadway, to corporate events to covering the SM on "The Play That Goes Wrong" on Broadway. But her passion really lies in in governance and working on the policies that help make other members of AEA life better.

Dyalekt was born and raised in a mixed race family in the Caribbean. He came to the States to attend college, but soon learned that the college system was not for him. They were not teaching the way he needed. That’s how he found himself in NYC. Learning about HipHop, Rap and street performers. He started writing songs, teaching in ways that would connect people, expressing what it was like to be mixed race, and giving insight on how words can have an impact on ones life.
Dyalekt has a whole show called "The Museum of Dead Words" showing at Art Apple NYC from September 21-27. For more information about Dyalekt and the event, visit http://dyalekt.com

Sean Gray started theatre like so many people, as an actor! At Orange Coast College he took classes in everything from directing to designing to producing. It was here he learned he liked to be more in control. After a few years he transferred to CSU Fullerton but found it to not be a good fit, then back to OCC, then finally to CSU Long Beach. Here is where he found what he wanted in education. After graduation he called up an old friend from OCC, Andrew Vonderschmitt, and said "I'm bored, got anything for me to do?" As it happened, Andrew was at the Long Beach Playhouse and they needed a prop master. Jump ahead 11 years, Sean is now the Producing Artistic Director!

Rebecca Bonebrake started acting in elementary school in San Fernando Valley, CA. She attended an arts high school before moving down to UC San Diego to get her undergrad in theatre. It was not until 1/2 way through undergrad, did she even find lighting design! But we are all happy she did, and fell in love with it. After college she took a few years off to work in the field, and got a job at Caltech in their theatre department. How many people can say that they have lit Stephen Hawking? After returning to UC San Diego to receive her master she found herself working as a lighting designer in an architectural firm. She has been a part of multiple amusement parks around the world! When not busy doing that, she is part of Chalk Repertory Theatre and 2 different Roller Derby teams.

Cindy Hennon Marino met John Rozzoni at Tri-Cities Opera in 2013 when they did #Carmen. At the time, John was transitioning out of a singing career and working part-time as program editor and social media manager. He did such an amazing job that the next season he became full-time as Director of Community Engagement. After Cindy left TCO, John became the Director of House Operations at Anderson Center for the Performing Arts. But starting on July 1, he comes full circle and will become the new Executive Director at TCO! Amazing where some vision and a music degree from IthacaCollege can take you!

Anna Robinson is a scenic and projection designer who grew up in New Zealand. After receiving her undergraduate at the Victoria University of Wellington she took two years to work in theatre and film. But she knew she needed more training to advance in her career. That's how she found herself at UC San Diego Theatre and Dance earning her MFA in Scenic Design. With her background in design and cinematography, she did her thesis in projection design. Within a few short years after graduation she has found herself working in LA at East West Players and Geffen Playhouse, to name a few, as well as across the country such as Mixed Blood Theatre Company in Minneapolis. There is no telling where her amazing talent will bring her next!

If you are a contemporary opera fan, or a fan of Star Trek or Super Mario Bros., you probably have heard of Josh Shaw's opera company, Pacific Opera Project. Josh started the company 9 years ago to produce adorable and high quality opera for the masses. Slowly it has grown to be well know for its modern mash ups that excite both opera lovers and newbies. Such as his recent "The Magic Flute" set in the Super Mario Bros and Zelda world, sung in English. Or the ever popular "Abduction From The Seraglio" set in the original Star Trek episodes.

But tax preparers do not need to see all of them. Instead they would prefer a spreadsheet with all your expenses already organized and calculated. Not sure what categories you should have? Look up the 1040 schedule C form. They are all listed there. Simple! Or at least a starting a point.

Stacy first worked with Christopher Murrillo (for longer than a day or two), this last December with the Troubadours "A Year With Out A Santana Clause". Come to find out, their paths have been crossing for years! Chris did props at the Long Beach Opera the first season Cindy and Stacy started there. He worked a number of shows at East West Players before Stacy got there. Chris' resume is full of theatre, opera, dance and TV productions all over the LA/San Diego area. Hear how he was in the right place at the right time to become the set dresser for "Desperate House Wives" and a model building for the Oscars!

In the mid to late 90's the city of Chicago was full of amazing talent, and everyone looking for work in the theatre. On a whim Meredith Anne Patt moved out to Los Angeles with a friend and found herself in the film industry. Within a few years she was quickly drawn back to theatre when word got out that had done Stage Management at school. The Sacred Fools Theater Company and Theatre of NOTE were her two home bases. From there Meredith found herself looking for steady work and became Patron Services or House Manager at Kirk Douglas Theatre, The Los Angeles Theatre Center, Center Theatre Group, Shakespeare LA and now East West Players. Along the way she got married and has an amazing son and adorable puppies. We also talk a little about acceptance in the theatre, Pronoun, and how everything is about growing and learning.

Ashley Flowers and Eric Hart are both amazing prop masters with some of the best stories. Who else so easily switches from fake food, different kinds of blood and safety with weapons on stage? All with a smile on their face? These two host their own podcast called "Silk Flowers and Papier Mache Hearts" where they go into more detail on a weekly bases. We did pick up some great tips. Always check for food allergies with the cast before providing food. Always stress the important of weapon handling and safety. And a big one, you can never communicate too much or give too much information to props people.
You can follow them both on Facebook and Instagram. And make sure to check out their web page and podcast at http://www.silkflowersandpapiermachehearts.com/

Christie Kelly met Cindy as a driver for the last 2 seasons at Opera Philadelphia where she managed to drive a 26' truck around the old city, with a recently broken foot! For the first year at least.
But don't let that fool you. Christie is a Broadway veteran (revival of Man of LaMancha); knows how to do scenic painting the old school way; learned to do wig design and maintenance on the spot and even spends time in craft services. We are pretty sure there is nothing she can not do. At one point she was called in to "straighten bow ties" on a Discovery Channel documentary on Abraham Lincoln. But when they learned she was a wiz at wigs, they gave her a cheap wig in a bag, and 45 minutes she gave them back a stunning Lincoln wig.

In part 2 of our discussion with the Madama Butterfly team at Opera Columbus we learn why director Crystal Manich has stopped using the word "traditional" and started thinking "traditional production approach" to differentiate the "tradition" of the staging vs the "tradition" of the music. And how she finds the heightened moments of the opera to help tell the psychological story of the characters and their relationship. This team has given us hope for the future of the classics.

Today we welcome Director Crystal Manich, Choreographer Susa Van Pelt Petry, Set and Costume Designer Court Watson and Lighting and Projection Designer Tlaloc Lopez-Watermann as we discuss why doing a show like Madame Butterfly is important in 2018 and how a company can "re-tell" a story that so many people think they know WITHOUT changing the music or the words.

Bridget Reilly Beauchamp always wanted to start a theatre company names Pulley And Buttonhole Theatre named from a poem she always loved: ""I want to be famous in the way a Pulley is famous, or a Buttonhole, not because it did anything spectacular, but because it never forgot what it could do." - From Famous by Naomi Shihab Nye. Bridget is the Artistic Director and often the director of their 3 play season. When not directing she feels her job is to act as a sound board and back stop for the Director; giving support while not hovering. It is also to be the goat for the thoroughbreds. Go ahead and listen to understand her amazing reference!

Shara Abvabi may focus on lighting, but she is no stranger to stage management. She talks about how being a stage manager helped her learn how to communicate with other stage managers and designers on the production team to make the show as smooth as possible. Because of these skills, and being in the right place at the right time, Shara has become the resident lighting designer and production manager at the beautiful Malibu Playhouse. When not there, you can see her work all over the Los Angeles area ranging from dance to straight plays to musicals! All holding their own challenges and all needing lights and projections to play a different part.

Today we interview Jakob Lehmann. Jakob was born and raised in Berlin, Germany, where he still resides, on occasion. He comes from a long line of musicians and picked up the violin at the age of 7. He has a fascination with romantic and classic music, not just the music, but how it was played, how the members were arranged, and what period instruments were used. He wants to bring back the source as much as possible. He sees it as "Building a bridge between our time and a time long gone".

This week we interview Technical Director Johnathan Bearclaw Hart. Cindy worked with Bearclaw on "Faust" at Portland Opera. Portland Opera is the first opera he has worked at, in any capacity and he tells us some of the differences and challenges he faces switching from Musical Theatre to Opera. A big one being that operas rent a lot more sets, that then need to fit into a space they were not originally designed for. But he loves puzzles! So it worked out great for him.
Enjoy the show!

This week we interview Joel B. New. He decided to try acting at the age of 10, and was immediately cast as Oliver in Oliver! Not bad for a first role. By age 12 he started piano lessons. He received a BM in Musical Theatre performance with a minor in piano from Oklahoma City University. Followed up by a Masters in Musical Theatre Writing from NYU. This is where he found his home and has stayed in NYC since then. Joel has written musicals, song cycles, did a theatre podcast for 5 years and produced concerts of his music. It was amazing to hear about his process of creating music and how he shares it with the performers. Loving to hear how a new performer interprets his music. He has a new concert this Saturday, October 6th at the new Green Room 42 in NYC. GO GET TICKETS!

This week we have Timothy Cheung an accomplished collaborative pianist from Toronto, Canada, through he does not spend too much time there. Tim received his Undergrad and Masters degrees from University of Western Ontario. From there he studied at the Canadian Opera Company, Merola Opera in San Francisco and Music Academy of the West. Though trained as a pianist, he is willing to get his hands dirty with the all aspects. At Teatro Nuovo he scheduled the coachings for 60 people, filled in for Cindy when she had to run to another venue, and helped keep everyone sane!

Today we had the pleasure of talking to David Adam Moore. Cindy worked with David at Portland Opera where David was the Video Designer for "Faust". Though the first time she met him, he was doing a slightly different role. He was rehearsing the part of The Count for the "Marriage of Figaro" at Palm Beach Opera. David grew up in South East Texas and is a 6th generation musician. His father was a back up singer and bass player for County singer Tracy Byrd and David still considers his father a superior musician. David has come a long way from performing in his church easter service. You can see him perform on the Metropolitan Opera stage or catch his amazing production and video design through his company, GLMMR with is partner Vita Tzykun.

Benny Perez had the privilege to come meet Sir Doggington and the Twins had a few minutes to talk to Benny between dog petties! Benny attended Citrus College Theatre Arts which has an impressive performing arts program that really helped him decide this was his dream. He spent 16 years traveling and performing on Princess Cruises. Not even a week after his final show on the cruise ship, he found himself cast as "Kevin" in the 2011 national tour of "In The Heights". One hour was just not enough time to scrape the surface with Benny! We hope to have a follow up podcast real soon.

This week we had the pleasure of talking to Sheiva Khalily just minutes after she checked into an air bnb in Canada. Like so many people before her, she attributes her success to those around her and being in the right place at the right time--or maybe it was the wrong place at the right time? Sometimes it is hard to tell in the moment. She started as a kid when her mom put her into theatre to build her self confidence. Soon she learned that her place was back stage when she found her community in the High School Theatre Department. From there she went to UCLA @uclatft and meet a great mentor and friend names Kaitlyn Pietras. After graduation she found herself working for Disney Creative Entertainment where she got to spend 4 months in Shanghai Disneyland Resort. Recently, Stacy saw her work as projection designer for @EWPlayers production of "As We Babble On". Hope you all enjoy the podcast as much as we did making it!

Today we interview Stage Manager Pam Campi Spee and Performer Mike Spee. Cindy and Pam met at the University of the Pacific where they both got their undergraduate degrees. Learn about both of their paths to the arts, how they met, and the challenges of raising a family while working in theatre. There may even be some funny stories about Cindy mixed in!
This week we had the pleasure of talking to Laura Sturm. An acting and movement couch currently residing on Chicago. Even though she originally got an accounting degree, she fell in love with theatre and the Meisner Technique. She feels that her job is to make actor feel safe and comfortable in their own body. One thing she has them repeat daily is "I HAVE NO APOLOGIES!" Something we believe will help all of us live a better life of not apologizing for being ourselves.
If you are in the Chicago area, look her up and stop in for a class. You can find her schedule on your web site www.laurasturm.com. And if you can't go in person, she recommends a few books:

This week we had the pleasure to interview Elise Sandell who worked as the Assistant Director with Cindy on Portland Opera's "Faust". Elise started at Barrington High School wanting to be an actor but soon found her love of back stage. She received her BFA from Webster University in Stage Management and soon after got a fellowship with Opera America. There has been no stopping her since then! UNTIL NOW! Her traveling life of an Opera Director is coming to an end as she has announced this is her #farewelltour. Don't worry, there is a still a chance to see her amazing work as she will be headed back to Portland Opera to do La Traviata then to Florida Grand Opera to do Motzart's "The Marriage of Figaro".

Today we have the amazing Vita Tzkun who Cindy met during Faust at Portland Opera. Vita was the set and costume designer for the stunning opera. She finds that often she is mistaken for the costume designer simply because of her gender. As well as finds herself in rooms with nothing but men on a regular basis. She does not let that slow her down at all! She and David Adam Moore started an NYC-based multimedia art collective called Glmmr. Its body of work includes design for opera, dance and theater, concert visuals, film, commercial design, and gallery installations.

Today we talk about the serious issue of harassment in the workplace. We cover many different kinds of harassment, ways to identify them, and ways to report harassment. Harassment is a very serious issue, and by speaking about it we hope to bring understanding around it as well as encourage people experiencing harassment to bring it to light. Harassment is not acceptable and everyone has a right to a safe working environment.
There are various tools at your disposal to understand and report harassment in the workplace. In the United States, one of the main places to go to is the EEOC - Equal Employment Opportunity Commission. This is a federal agency that has various documents about harassment that you can read to help you understand your rights under the law. Some states have individual laws and rules that expand upon the federal laws. Below we have provided a few examples, but please look for more about your state, or your country.

Today we have Sally Adams on the Podcast. We learn that from a early age she was already drawn to contemporary work. She sang in a choir with Allen Pote, a modern choral composer. Also, she previously taught kids at Holland Hall to continue using their imagination as they grow and develop. And has 3 very successful children whom are award winning playwrights.
Did you catch Cindy on episode 41 of SallyPal Podcast? If you haven't, head on over to sallypal.com to have a listen and check out her other episodes and blogs!
And did you notice the episode numbers of both of our podcasts? A happy coincidence!

On today's episode we have Kyrra Gelinas! Kyrra was running down the theatre aisles at age 6 to see what the sound designer was doing while her sister was on stage. Her love of the arts and curiosity for all things has not stopped growing. Though she chose to go to Embry Riddle Aeronautical University with a dream to join NASA or Space X, she still calls theatre her home and family. She says they are connected to her; The theatre takes you away for a few hours, and space travel will physically take you away.
