The Shaded Youth Podcast: Recent Episodes

The Shaded Youth

Our vision behind "The Shaded Youth" was to create a platform for a wide array of Muslim voices to discuss matters relevant to their Deen and way of life in contemporary times. Ultimately we're all striving to better ourselves and hopefully be one of those shaded by Allah's throne on the Day of Judgement, i.e. "the shaded youth." InshaAllah this project can be a means for that!

We're also available on various streaming platforms, including YouTube, Spotify, and Google Podcast!

Assalamualaikum everyone!

On this episode, we have Wasiq Javed. He is a community organizer, spoken word artist, and political activist based in Texas. We discuss the ongoing case of Imam Jamil al-Amin (formerly known as H. Rap Brown), whose revolutionary story is one that is needed for the current discourse surrounding the rights of communities and individuals in this nation. He is a civil rights leader and humanitarian that was on track to lead his community until he was wrongfully imprisoned for a murder he did not commit in 2002. Wasiq is engaged in efforts to advocate for him and see that his story is heard. We also discuss the role of social activism for the American ummah and the context of its relevance today.

"Born and raised in Houston, Texas to Pakistani immigrants, Wasiq is passionate about increasing Muslim involvement in public service and civic engagement to add a growing voice to the American civic and political discourse. He has previously organized campaigns, protests, and education events across numerous social issues and founded a youth civic-engagement organization at his high school, Lakes for Lives, and Students for Imam Jamil, a national advocacy campaign to help free a wrongfully imprisoned civil rights leader."

Hope you guys enjoy and benefit from the conversation inshaAllah!

Salam everyone, on this week we’re bringing back one of our favorite guests, Adil!

We speak about his experience living with ADHD, Depression, and get into his two times being admitted into a psych ward. In the beginning, we also get into the importance of art, and especially comedy as a cultural medium.

We do get into some serious discussion about mental health, so for anyone listening that can relate to some of these experiences, please do try to seek professional help or at the very least, speak to someone you can trust. Talking about it is a huge first step and conversations can truly be lifesaving.

InshaAllah in the near future, we will bring on a professional to talk about these topics, so be on the look out!

As usual, hope you guys benefit inshaAllah

Salam guys! Apologies for the break the past few weeks, but we're back with another episode! This week, we have on Faizan Habibi from Masjid Parking Lot! In their words, "MPL is a group of friends trying to change the world one conversation at a time! It's a way for us to create our own narrative, humanize Muslims, and unapologetically be ourselves. Essentially, it is a podcast for humans by humans."

This was definitely one of the most natural episodes I've done so far, just because of what we were discussing and how amazing the chemistry was between two podcast hosts. We talked about working as a team, tiktok and audiences misconstruing your words, and a whole bunch of ways to successfully run a podcast.

Hope you all enjoy!

We're joined this week with Cyrus McGoldrick!  He's currently a PHD candidate at Ibn Khaldun University in Turkey and former Civil Rights Manager at the New York chapter of CAIR, the Council on American Islamic Relations. In today's climate, it can almost seem impossible to some to combine both due regard for the sacred and concern for the nation's affairs. Scholars and activists can be on opposite camps at times and extremes are definitely taken in certain matters. On this week's episode we discuss how to bridge spirituality and politics in today's time. We also delve into the topic of political prisoners, specifically the cases of Dr. Aafia Siddiqui and Imam Jamil al-Amin.

Hope you guys benefit and enjoy!

All of us have grown up knowing at least some of Allah's beautiful names, the most common likely being Ar-Rahman, A-Rahim, and a few others we may mention in popular Duas and Surahs. But the reality is that there's 99 of them, 99 ways to call out to your Beloved. The King, The Best of Givers, The Self-Sufficient, The Bestower of Faith, etc. Each name is a window into experiencing closeness to your Lord, and each attribute is an opportunity to fall that much more in love with Him. This week, we're joined by best-selling author, poet, and pharmacist Shaziya Barkat! Her book, "knowing You," is a collection of spiritual poems, each one tackling a name of Allah and making the reality of each more personal to the one who reads it. We talk about her book, but also her experience as a Muslim writer, how she got into poetry, and influences behind her body of work.

Mohamed Bahe is a community leader from New York. He's the founder and executive director of the nonprofit organization Muslims Giving Back, as well as the director of Muslim Community Center. He's had a huge hand to play in major community projects that have helped the ummah on a local level in his hometown and even on a global scale. Asiyah Women Center (which serves domestic abuse victims and women facing economic hardship), Mercy Bakery (feeds communities across the world, starting from Yemen), etc. Brother Bahe has a view on charity that's pushed him to do more and more to help out his brothers and sisters, and it's one that's not shared much anymore:  Charity is selfish.

As young Muslims, we all kind of know the age-old advice our scholars and elders would always tell us in lectures and weekly sermons: Get married young. But exactly how practical is it? Learning a new language can be pretty daunting, especially when you go at it from a more academic standpoint. Many of us may have lost that sense of wonder we once had for different cultures and now don't really have that yearning anymore to tap into a new language. Although everyone can agree that this is one of the most beautiful steps you can take for positive personal development, few of us take that leap. Especially for Muslims, learning Arabic opens up a whole new world of understanding the Qur'an, the word of Allah SWT.  Interview with Hanan and Al-Andalus Institute: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aJ7FQtxYy2I  If you want to check out Al-Andalus Institute, you can find them here: https://www.andalusinstitute.com/studentreferral "The Journey of a thousand miles begins with one step."

Insecurities; We all live with them. They come in the form of physical "imperfections," shortcomings in character, lack of material success, etc. They affect the self esteem and overall mental health of all of us. It's not always easy to stop overthinking or simply "get out of your head," but a sign of progress is doing just that. A part of the human experience is being able to grow stronger day by day, and that doesn't always have to be alone. Your mind is your most important tool so it's crucial that it gets treated right.

On this week's episode, we're joined by a friend of ours, Rashel aka Rxsh! We talk about all sorts of things, like his hobbies involving hair-cutting and Instagram commentary, and even go into mentorship / why it's important. This was a more relaxed, unstructured episode in comparison to some of the previous weeks. We had a great time catching up with him. #jokes #rants #friends  Join us every Friday at 6pm for more discussions like this!   **********

In life, the relationships you build, maintain, and choose to break are crucial factors that make up who you end up becoming. You're the person that ultimately chooses for yourself which paths to go forth on, but as the saying goes, "You're the average of the five people you spend the most with." Choosing who those people are is an important aspect of your life you may want to consistently reconsider. Loving another person and making them your companion is one of the most beautiful experiences of our existence. But, be sure to share yourself to only those that deserve you. You are you, but your friends add to the make up of you. And it's imperative you choose the right ones.

We're not trying to give any irresponsible solutions, nor do we claim to experts on how to resolve such an issue. God willing, we all benefit from this discussion and learn to treat others around us better than we would like to be treated. Join us every Friday at 6pm where we'll try to have fruitful conversations like this one!
